Bootcamp and Windows XP/7 Install Questions

I got an iMac a few months back and want to set up BootCamp for a Windows install.
I have a Windows XP Full install disk w/the product key.
I also have a Windows 7 Upgrade disk.
From what I have read, the newest version of Bootcamp will not install XP, which I could then upgrade to W7 (I assume this is correct).
Can I then install from the Windows 7 Upgrade disk and at some point indicate the XP Product Code?
Secondary question - assuming I get Windows installed and running properly, if I boot to the Mac OS, can it see/access the Windows partition?
Thanks,
Steve

If the Windows 7 Upgrade is a full install. What you would do is install, then reinstall over itself. And only then will it activate.
There are upgrades that are to go from Home Premium to Pro and that isn't a full install.
Windows 8 CP is free and works.
Windows 7 System Builder are $99 for Home Premium 64-bit

In preparation for installing bootcamp and windows 7, and in the absence of a DVD drive on my MacBook Air, before starting, can I partition my external drive (for use with my Mac) to have an ISO image file location for Windows downloads?

Can I run a windows software program that is on a CD on my macbook pro after I install bootcamp and windows xp home?

    genepaquin,
the last MacBook Pros that supported installing Windows XP in a Boot Camp partition are the Mid 2010 models. If your MacBook Pro is newer than that, and you don’t have a newer version of Windows to install into a Boot Camp partition on your MacBook Pro, then you might consider an alternative such as running Windows with the help of programs such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop rather than through Boot Camp.

  • 802.11n with Bootcamp and Windows xp

My 13 inch Macbook connects to my airport network at 802.11n 5GHz dual bandwidth using OSX but only 802.11g works when using bootcamp and windows. My 802.11n network shows-up on windows as an available network and I can type in my network password but it won't make the connection. Is 802.11n automatically active with bootcamp? I am able to connect at 802.11n speeds to my network using my work's Window laptop and a Linksys 802.11n usb card so I know it works.

  • I want to delete VM fusion and windows 7 then install windows 7 with bootcamp, how do I do this?  Help Please!!

I am running VM Fusion firm ware and windows, so I can check my military email form time to time and esign documents from time to time.  But it is way way too slow, Can anyone tell me how to delete the firm ware and windows and then use bootcamp to run windows? Please help!

    1. Are you backing up your entire drive? If yes, it will include you Mac and the VM, both, unless you specifically excluded.
    2. In a nutshell, leave your VM intact, if you have about 50-100GB free on the current hard disk.
    3. You can install Windows via Bootcamp on the existing disk, provided #2 is true.
    4. What type of a Mac do you have, the year/model would help fill in more specific details.
    5. The steps to install Windows via Bootcamp are
         a. Run Application -> Utilities -> Bootcamp Assistant.
         b. It has three check boxes, which will download Windows drivers which support Apple hardware, partition you disk, and install windows
using the install media. Depending on #4, it may require using a USB2 flash drive of 8/16 GB.
         c. Once you have Windows installed, you may need to install drivers that support Apple Hardware.
         e.  You can transfer files from your VM to your Bootcamp Windows installation. At this point you can delete the VMwar
              Windows, if you like.
         f. Please be aware that to run Windows under Bootcamp would require selecting Windows and rebooting the Mac overtime you want to switch between OSX
             and Windows.
This is the quickest set of steps that will have Windows running.

  • Question on using bootcamp and windows on 15" macbook pro retina (late 2013)

So i just bought a new macbook pro 15" retina (late 2013) and i want to play games on it like LOL, WOW, and SC2. i was wondering if i really need to play them on bootcamp using windows 7.

Open Boot Camp Assistant (in Utilities) print out the instructions, setup Windows on its own partition, insall and run Windows natively, not much difference than on any laptop.

  • Bootcamp and Windows 7

I created a Windows partition with FAT32 (unfortunately) and then tried to install Windows 7. Realising my mistake, I went back, deleted the partition and tried to create a new partition. However, I now don't get the question of which file system is required, and whatever size I ask for the partition, it sticks with FAT32.

Re-read the steps on installing Windows 7 and the Boot Camp Guide PDF
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
BOOTCAMP will always be FAT32, you just need to select the partition and format while in Windows 7 install.

  • Bootcamp and windows 7 home premium

I am planning on installing windows 7 home premium with bootcamp for my macbook pro retina display (mid2012) OSX 10.8.2
The question is which version will work?
I have looked on amazon and there is the normal version that was 199.99 and they droped to around 160 something
Then i see plenty of other version of windows 7 home premium that say "system builder DVD 1 pack" or OEM version and they are only $95-ish
I know that i dont want to buy the windows 7 upgrade i just want to install the OS on my mac..... The upgrade and that "system buidler" are both under $100 which makes me think that they are something else then the disks to install windows 7 home premium on my mac.
    Anyone know the differences?

I bought a Windows 7 home premium SP1 64-bit OEM software disk for $95.  I installed it onto my MacBook Pro using bootcamp and the install worked perfectly without any problems. During the install process you'll need to type in the product key that comes with the Win 7 disk. After the install was complete I clicked on "Activate Windows via internet" and after a second a message came back saying that Windows is now activated.
As others have mentioned, my install of Win 7 OEM is now married to this specific computer. I cannot install this OEM version onto another computer.  If you plan on replacing your mac in the near future buying the full retail version of Win 7 is a better bet since you can install the retail version onto a newer computer.
My MacBook Pro is brand new so I won't have a need to move the Win 7 to another computer. I hope this helps.

  • Help with Graphics on bootcamp and Windows 7...

So, i installed windows 7 home premium 64bit via bootcamp on my mac.  I'm playing RIFT, and honestly, on medium graphics I'm getting poor fps (14 at best) and over all the graphics seem lower quality than I feel they should.  My question is, is it possible I need to install new drivers for my video card? According to Windows 7 they are up to date, but i'm confused as to if this is truly correct as its bootcamp, and this is my first experience with it so I may be missing something.  Any help would be appreciated!

You can download the latest drivers at amd.com by going to Support & Drivers, MAC Graphics, Apple Boot Camp, iMac, Windows 7-64 bit.
You can also use the Mobility Radeon HD 5xxx drivers (iMac's use notebook GPU's) which are slightly newer, but I haven't noticed a difference in performance.

  • Bootcamp and windows 8(partition problem)

I am trying to install windows 8 and until now with no sucess. The instalation by the bootcamp runs smoothly, but when I boot from the USB, start the instalation process on windows and it asks me what partition I want to install the windows, I try to choose the Partition 4: BOOTCAMP and it doesn't work. It says it's a problem because the partition is EFI and for installing windows it can't be or something like that
And if I don't press the Alt button, when the bootcamp finishes the instalation and reboot the mac, it goes to a black screen where said that I don't have any boot devices connected and to connect one and press a key.

I believe you are supposed to format the partition labeled BOOTCAMP to NTFS from the installer. It is stated in the BootCamp suport guide.

  • Brightness with bootcamp and windows 8.1 on rMBP 13 2013

    Hi,
I've googled for this issue and i've found many potential solves of my problem:
    - Turning off adaptive brightness
    - disabling Light sensor in Device Manager
    - deleting SensorsAlsDriver.dll
Nothing works. I'm actually using Win 8.1 Pro N x64 with installed Media Feature Pack and with the newset updates. It is fresh-installed via bootcamp manager.
After sleeping and waking up my Mac brightness buttons magically start working!
    What do I suspect?
When i delete SensorsAlsDriver.dll and uninstall Proximity sensor in Device Manager, after reboot Windows re-installs the sensor, and re-apply the .dll file.
I dont have an idea how to prevent OS from doing it...and I think it is potential solution.
Could someone help me solving this problem?

I've been experiencing this same issue. I have the exact same laptop and running windows 8.1 pro through bootcamp. Everything runs great except the brightness doesn't seem to work properly. Also the keyboard's backlight is maxed out everytime i turn it on no matter what the lighting conditions. This isn't too big of a deal as i can turn it down once its on but still a minor inconvenience. My bigger issue is that the laptop's brightness is set to a certain level when i boot up in windows 8.1 and i can't change the level of it. I've tried disabling the adaptive brightness with no fix. I read somewhere that disabling the generic PnP monitor under device manager might fix it but im worried that it will disable my laptop's screen altogether and have to redo my bootcamp partition all over again. I have the latest bootcamp drivers for apple that were updated in early feb (2014) so I know that's not the issue and i have also tried reinstalling the bootcamp drivers but it just seems to do it again after a reboot. Dont' know any other fixes. I really want to get this working, other than that, bootcamp on windows 8.1 is perfect on my 13 retina pro.

  • Bootcamp and windows

    hey
i want to install windows xp on my mac and when i try partitioning the disk for a 10GB windows space, it tells me that it cant't partition because "some files can't be moved". it says i need to run disk utility and partition/format my HD as a single extended (journaled) drive. when i look at info of my internal HD it is a extended journaled drive so i don't know what the problem is. i have an internal drive of 120 GB and it is used for 85GB so enough space left for a windows partition of 10 GB and still there should be enough free space in the mac partition (each should have 5 GBfree space i read).
it says i need to format my HD but then all my data will be lost, i got a external HD so i can back up my internal mac HD on it but i don't know how to do this easily (is there a program that enables you to make image copy of your internal HD and then easily mirror it back once the reformat of the internal HD is ready? )
thx for all help or info
    cheers
    G

it worked now so i think it ll do , need to update my windows version to install the bootcamp drivers but it ll be ok thx m8

  • Bootcamp and WIndows 7 Pro 64 bit

    Hello,
I've restored my system and got Boot Camp to make a partition the size of 150 GB. I try to install Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I get the message that the BOOTCAMP partition cannot be installed because it's not an NTFS file system. Is there a way to format the BootCamp partition to use the NTFS file system instead of FAT32?

Look on pages 8 and 9 of this install guide (http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup10.6.pdf) . Disregard the blue screen you see on the top of page 9; that is for Windows XP
