Bootcamp assistant fails to launch

Bootcamp assistant fails to launch. Tells me I need to update my firmware. But I have already upgraded the firmware! Trying to run the SMC firmware updater again does not let me proceed because... the mac is already updated!
MacBook Pro 1.83 Ghz
Mac OS X 10.4.6
1GB RAM
80GB HD
All updates up until 6/8/06 installed, permissions checked.
Also, Parallels Desktop RC2 does not recognize the CD/DVD-ROM drive (error message says it cannot read data from it) and therefore cannot proceed with Windows XP SP2 Installation. The drive works flawlessly with all other apps.
A FileMaker Pro-based runtime accounting solution installs but unexpectedly quits the nanosecond after I double-click to open it.
Photos keep disappearing from the iPhoto libary. After successful importing, blank placeholders appear instead of the imported photos after relaunching iPhoto.
This MacBook Pro has been an unmitigated disaster thus far...

You are making the risky assumption the firmware was not properly installed. How can one not install the firmware correctly? I simply responded to the software update notice, downloaded the firmware, and installed it. The process was almost automatic. How can there possibly be any user error involved?
I believe I installed the firmware properly. If I try to install the firmware again, I get a message that the MacBook Pro is already updated with the correct firmware. In spite of this, Bootcamp keeps telling me I need to update the firmware, refusing to launch, hence the frustration.
This is not actually mine, but a friend's computer. I doubt AppleCare is valid for a computer purchased in Greece, but we'll try contacting the local distributor. It is a 900 number...

  • Bootcamp Assistant fails - manually installing support software not an option

Bootcamp Assistant fails when it gets to the downloading support software stage.
I've seen other messages here saying there's a workaround that means manually downloading and installiing the support software. This doesn't work for me as the option to NOT automatically download and install the software is greyed out in Bootcamp Assistant. Why is that? Can I change it? If not are there other workarounds?

Thank so much for your response. In reply I should say that erasing the Macintosh HD partition (using the disk utility application - Photo Below) and re-installing the OS X wasn't any help.
I also would like to clarify my understanding of your first paragraph,  if you suggested that the issue could be related to my superdrive? Also would like to ask for further instruction on creating a thumb drive .
In the end I would like to thank you for your advice on the required partition size for windows installation.

  • BootCamp Assistant won't detect my Windows 7 Installation Disc

I am installing Windows 7 on my 13' Macbook Pro early 2011 model - I am on OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion).
I'm using BootCamp Assistant to try into install Windows 7 (I have the authentic installation disc), but BootCamp assistant failed to detect my disc. I am installing it on my 13' Macbook Pro early 2011 model - I am on OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion). I used BootCamp Assistant to try into install Windows 7 (I have the authentic installation disc), but BootCamp assistant failed to detect my disc and the error "The installer disc could not be found." I could hear the installation disc in my optical drive spinning and stopping.
I have searched throught the forums and tried many things but none of them worked. I have been looking for the solution all day!
    Please help!
Note: I have installed the proper drivers for the version of Windows I am installing.

Well I have tried downloaded a Windows 7 ISO, and tried mounting it on a USB flash drive and booting it from the USB, but that didn't work either (I heard that my version of OS X doesn't support that anymore because I already have an optical drive.)
BTW - what do you mean exactly by running disk utility on the DVD drive?

  • Hi, I've been trying for days to download Windows support software via Bootcamp assistant, but it always failed with message 'Can't install Windows Support Software because it is not currently available from the Software update server.' Any advice welcome

    Hi,
I've been trying for days to download Windows support software via Bootcamp assistant but it always fails with message 'Can't install windows software because it is not currently available from the software update server.'
Anyone else had problems or success with this?
    Thanks in advance.

Your issue is completely different. You are running Snow Leopard. There is no download for Windows Support software for Snow Leopard, hence the error you see. Snow Leopard Windows Support software is on the Snow Leopard installation disk.
You need the Snow Leopard installation disk or a replacement for it.

  • Can I hide or remove the bootcamp assistant launch icon?

I clicked the bootcamp assistant icon and it opened a window that will not close.  How do I get rid of it?

I don't know if this is still an issue for you if so, then hopefully this will help. Place your mouse over the icon, press down and a menu should pop up that has the offer to "quit" select it and it is gone from your launchpad!

  • Bootcamp Assistant: Downloading Windows support software... STUCK.

I've been trying for 2 days to get Bootcamp Assistant to run on my iMac 5K, and every time I've tried I get to "Downloading Windows support software..."  and it just stalls.   I even left it over night in hopes maybe it would advance some how, but nothing at all, just stuck at maybe 10%,
Anybody else get past this?   I see tons of people having installed Bootcamp already, how the **** did you manage it when you can't get appropriate drivers or software?

Wireless or wired doesn't matter (have tried both).
I've got a 150mbit down connection, which I've routinely run speed tests and other things since setting up the machine.  So I'm going to assume the connection isn't the issue.
Here's a dump of everything from the Console.  Any of it make sense?

  • BootCamp Assistant removed all partitions

When I first installed Windows 7 using BootCamp Assistant it formated the disk as DOS FAT (32). I wanted to change that to NTFS. So I launched BootCamp Assistant, selected Remove Windows, and proceeded to remove the BootCamp partition. The dialog box stated that my disk would be restored to a single partition. That done I ran BootCamp Assistant again to try and re-install Windows. But it said my disk could not be used to boot. So I ran Disk Utility from a network recover session and discovered that BootCamp had left my disk with only a single DOS FAT(32) parition! My OS X was completely gone and now I can't do anything with my laptop. Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there some way I can reset the partition type without erasing the disk and recover OS X without having to do a complete restore?

You failed to read the Boot Camp documentation (specifically the part about using the Windows install disk to format the partition as NTFS), did you read the part about making a backup before you do this?
Reboot, hold the option key down when you hear the chime, hold it down until the boot manager loads, select the Mac drive to boot from, if there is no Mac drive and you have no backup then reinstall Lion from the recovery partition (cmd-r) if that is toasted it gets harder, post back.

  • The guide to bootcamp assistant states that bootcamp can only be installed on a drive with a single partition. New Macs with Lion preinstalled have two partitions - the second is a recovery partition.  How do I install Bootcamp?

Late in August 2011 I took delivery of a new 27" iMac with Lion preinstalled.  I need to run Windows as well. Following Apple's written suggestion, I printed off the then current 12 pages of the document "Bootcamp Installation & Setup Guide" which clearly stated that the hard drive you were going to install on had to have on it, before install, a maximum of one partition.  Using finder and disk utility I determined that there was only one partition.  Unbeknownst to me, there was (is) an additional hidden (from those two pieces of software) partition on the disk.  As of machines delivered new with Lion preinstalled, Apple has begun to include a "recovery partition".  In that partition there is a copy of the software necessary to reinstall Lion via a download from the Apple App Store.  Not knowing the partition was there, I cranked up  "Bootcamp Assistant" which nicely offered to repartition my hard drive creating a "Bootcamp Partition" in addition to the existing.  I told it how big to make each and hit the do it button, subsequently destroying my operating system.  Oh, it very nicely told me, after the damage was done, how many partitions were REALLY on the disk and that I could not install Bootcamp cause there were too many partitions.
Luckily the the Recovery Partition, which at that point I knew existed, was not harmed and after doing some research on another compter, I used it to once again download Lion from the App Store and reinstall. So, I have recovered but am still stuck with the problem:  how do I install Bootcamp in this new environment?

First you need to seriously back up your Mac.
A clone is an exact duplicate of your existing Mac HDD. Merely copying and pasting a drive will not make a bootable backup. In case of problems you can boot from an Ext HDD clone and use the utilities to repair, reformat, or clone the Ext HDD back to the internal Mac HDD.  While Time machine back ups are easy you can not boot from it. The best thing to have for any kind of problem is a bootable clone backup on an external drive. Some even have two external backup drives in case one fails. There are two good apps for cloning named SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner.
In dealing with the recovery partition a simple approach is to clone the Mac partition to an external disk then re-partition the Mac to a single partition (GUID partition table) . Then clone the external disk clone back to the Mac. You will now have only one Partition and Boot Camp assistant sould not object.
Some have recommended getting rid of the recovery partition while others have advised not to do this. If you have the Lion USB Thumb Drive you do not need a recovery partition so can discard it without concern. There is another way to get rid of the recovery partition if you decide to do it but first be sure to have a backup of your Mac ( I know I sound like a nagging mom but many dead computers have been saved by this simple precaution).
    Use Disk Utility.
    1) Make the Recovery visible in Disk Utility by using a program like Secrets:http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27025/secrets or MacPilot:http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php (15 day free trial).
    2) Highlite the Recovery partition and Control click it and select Mount the partition.
    3) With the Recovery partition highlited, erase the partition, you'll get an error message, ignore it.
    4) Now highlite the top identity of the hard drive and select the partition tab.
    5) Highlite the Recovery partition and press the minus sign.
    6) Click and hold on the bottom edge of the partition above and drag it to the bottom, if it doesn't go there automatically, the press apply.

  • Problems with Bootcamp Assistant: no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

    Hello Guys,
I got a problem setting up Windows 7 on my recently bought 13" MacBook Pro (2,3Ghz Core i5).
I used the bootcamp assistent to create a partition of 50GB on my Mac, everything is fine until now. I insert the Windows 7 disk and follow the instructions. But when I restart in spite of starting the installation of Windows 7, a black screen appears with a note saying "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". To exit this screen I then have to restart my Computer again, holding down the alt-key. In the following window I can just chose my Mac-Harddrive to boot from, the partition is not shown.
I used the software actualization tool to update to version 10.6.7 which is the most recent one i think.
The Windows 7 CD I use is actually a burned one. My University is a member of the msdn academic alliance and therefore offers me to download microsoft software for my work. I stress out that this is absolutly legal, I will only be allowed to use the software unitl I finished my studyings.
So as I said, I downloaded the Version of Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 (x64) on my computer and then burned on a DVD. I want to add, that the file I downloaded turned out to be an iso file. At first, I just burned this file on a DVD but since it turned out that i got the above mentioned message, I burned a second DVD with the actual files of the iso (with foldernames like autorun.inf, boot, bootmgr, bootmgr.efi, efi, setup.exe, sources support, and upgrade)
I dont know if these details are of any relevance, but i guess it may be useful since I believe that the burning thing could cause the problems.
I have already browsed the Forum for quite some time now, but I didnt find a case with the exact same problem that I have, so I decided to rather ask you for help now instead of killing my brain like I did before (and I dont really have a clue neither of Macbooks nor of Windows-Computers, its always try and error for me)
I hope somebody can come up with some helpful ideas or a solution.
If you need further details on my system or anything, please feel free to ask
    Thank you very much,
    David

Apple Disk Utility won't do a proper job and won't work (and it varies, some can start the install but fails later) Has to be burned at 2X Reduced Burn Speed
Also check the support articles for bootcamp

  • Boot Camp Assistant Won't Launch

I have not been able to get Boot Camp Assistant to launch. I double click on it but nothing happens. No error messages. Nothing.
Background: I just replaced the hard drive in my MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.4 GHz. Using the Restore Option of Disk Utility I copied a backup I had made of the full original Mac OS X partition from my old internal drive (I also had a Boot Camp Windows partition but that's another matter I think) to an external USB drive. Booting and operation from the new hard drive once restored seemed fine, but when I tried to launch Boot Camp Assistant to create a partition for Windows nothing happened. I restarted off my external USB backup drive and tried to launch Boot Camp Assistant from that drive, still nothing.
I then performed an Archive & Install of Tiger (I'd been running Leopard 10.5.8) and Boot Camp Assistant still wouldn't start. I'm currently updating Tiger to Leopard on my MacBook Pro but I'm not hopeful Boot Camp Assistant will launch after the update. Why would it? It didn't launch under Leopard after I restored it to the new hard drive. It wouldn't launch in Leopard when I started off my external drive. It wouldn't launch under Tiger after an Archive and Install. Obviously I've used Boot Camp Assistant before to create the Windows partition on my old drive so it would seem my firmware is current enough. I'm not getting any error messages to the contrary. I have no idea why Boot Camp Assistant will not launch.
I'm wondering if there may be something in one of the Previous Systems folders that is preventing Boot Camp Assistant from launching. The old hard drive was pretty messed up with hundreds of "Missing Folders" in the Rescued Items folder which I think was created by Disk Warrior.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
Also, I'm wondering if there is any way to go back and use a Previous System. You see, I'm going to have to reinstall a lot of software if I can't do that. I'd rather avoid that hassle. Thanks again.

In addendum to my original post: If I open the Boot Camp Assistant package contents and drill down to the BootCamp Executable file and double click that, Terminal opens with the following message:
Last login: Fri Jun  3 10:34:18 on console
    Macintosh:~ photoruss$ /Applications/Utilities/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant.app/Contents/MacOS/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant ; exit;

    logout
    [Process completed]
If I do the same thin on my MacPro I get a different message and Boot Camp Assistant starts:
Last login: Fri May 27 10:17:08 on console
    /Applications/Utilities/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant.app/Contents/MacOS/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant ; exit;

is it a reinstallation or a first one on a bare server ? if there were several attempts please be sure you cleaned evrything before launching the installation :
    - product directory
    - /etc/ora*
    - database
    - oraInventory
    - /tmp (I had a similar issue with remaining files in /tmp, even after rebooting)
If it doesn't work, check that you don't hit the NO-EXCUTE problem (see the OCS 10.1.2 release notes, look for "noexec")

  • INS-20802 Oracle Private Interconnect Configuration Assistant failed

Thought I would post what information I've gathered, after facing this error during install of RAC Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.1 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 64-bit, as Oracle Support is once again unable to help. Maybe this will save someone else some time and the aggravation of dealing with lousy Oracle Support.
The error occurs after root.sh has successfully completed on all nodes. Oracle Net Configuration Assistant runs successfully, then Oracle Private Interconnect Configuration Assistant launches and subsequently fails with the following.
[INS-20802] Oracle Private Interconnect Configuration Assistant failed.
    /u01/app/oraInventory/logs/installActions2010-12-13_01-26-10PM.log
INFO: Starting 'Oracle Private Interconnect Configuration Assistant'
INFO: Starting 'Oracle Private Interconnect Configuration Assistant'
INFO: PRIF-26: Error in update the profiles in the cluster
    INFO:
    WARNING:
INFO: Completed Plugin named: Oracle Private Interconnect Configuration Assistant
INFO: Oracle Private Interconnect Configuration Assistant failed.
INFO: Oracle Private Interconnect Configuration Assistant failed.
I was able to find another error that coincides with the PRIF-26 error: "CRS-2324:Error(s) occurred while trying to push GPnP profile. State may be inconsistent."
I was also able to duplicate the PRIF-26 error by trying to add a non-existent network interface via oifcfg:
    ./oifcfg setif -global jjj1/192.167.1.0:cluster_interconnect
PRIF-26: Error in update the profiles in the cluster
My best guess is the Oracle Private Interconnect Configuration Assistant makes a call to oifcfg. When oifcfg makes an update or adds a public/private interface, some XML files are also updated or maybe cross-referenced. These files are located here: <grid_home>/gpnp/<host>/profiles/peer
Any updates/changes/addtions to the private or public interfaces include changes for the Grid Plug-n-Play component, which uses the XML files. If the interface name is not contained in the XML files, my best guess is that triggers the "CRS-2324:Error(s) occurred while trying to push GPnP profile. State may be inconsistent.
I verified everything was configured correctly; the cluster verification utility reported everything was ok. I also ran the cluster verifcation utility against the GP-nP:
    ./cluvfy comp gpnp -verbose
I also reviewed the public and private interfaces via oifcfg and they are correct:
    [oracle@ryoradb1 bin]$ ./oifcfg getif -global
    eth0 10.10.2.0 global public
    eth1 192.167.1.0 global cluster_interconnect
    [oracle@ryoradb1 bin]$ ./oifcfg iflist -p
    eth0 10.10.2.0 PRIVATE
    eth1 192.167.1.0 UNKNOWN
My conclusion is the environment is configured correctly, in spite of the error generated by the Oracle Private Configuration Assistant.

I understand that you have installed 11.2.0.1 not 11.2.0.2 because multicating must be enabled if you have installed 11.2.0.2 and you may face these sort of problems because cluster nodes would not be able to communicate with each other.
Please check ocssd.log especially on the first node because this file will give more inforamtion as to why first node is not able to push GPnP file. As you have executed cluvfy to confirm the GPnP but to confirm whether GPnP profile is accurate to just narrow down the problem, I would suggest you to try to start cluster in exclusive mode so that you can sure that GPnP profile is good.
Shutdown CRS on all nodes, if there is any hung processes then kill them before executing the fllowing command to start cluster in exclusive mode.
    $GRID_HOME/bin/crsctl start crs -excl
If you are able to start cluster in exclusive then it is sure that GPnP is correct and then next step would be to verify the private network.
    See how you goes.
FYI, I was recently analyzing the same sort of problems where cluster was not able to access GPnP profile and finally I found issues on my private network. Customer had enabled IGMP snooping, which was avoiding multicast communication over the private network but it was 11.2.0.2, which is not the case here.

  • ITunes/QuickTime Player Failes to Launch

I am wondering if downloading the latest update was a good idea. When I attempt to launch iTunes I receive the following error:
"iTunes cannot run because it has detected an problem with your audio configuration."
Havins seen some other posts make reference to QuickTime Player settings (granted they were for an older version of iTunes) I thought I would open it up and take a look around. When I did this it failed to launch and produced the following error:
"Runtime error. This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
Everything worked quite well before the software download. Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

yep, a problem with your QuickTime generally causes the "audio configuration" iTunes error. (itunes uses QuickTime for audio and video playback.)
the following document may be of some assistance:
iTunes 7 for Windows: iTunes had detected an audio configuration problem

    Hi
I installed JDK 1.5 and tried installing again. It failed again at the same point.
I ran netca.bat file individually. It gave the below error in the command line. And I am pasting the log also here. It looks like something to do with my JDK.
Could you please tell me what can be the problem.
