Bootcamp assistant won't partition my HD for use with Bootcamp

A while ago I tried to install bootcamp but could never find the proper drivers for my computer. I decided to use parallels instead which worked ok for a while. Recently I believe I found the correct way to install the drivers but upon me booting up Windows XP it prompted me to verify my copy of windows. Problem was, no drivers were installed so I couldn't connect to the internet to verify it. I decided to delete the partition and re-install Windows XP with my SP3 disc. After I deleted the original partition I tried making a new one but my Mac gave me this message: "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again." I'm pretty sure I completely understand what it wants me to do, but I really hope I'm wrong. Is there anyway around this? I really, REALLY, don't want to reformat the hardrive, I can't make room for all the important files I have on my External Hardrive. So, is there any way around this? Thanks for any help you can give, It's greatly appreciated.

The issue you are dealing with is a major pain for anyone using BootCamp - it really shouldn't be happening. Data gets "sprayed" (like paint) across the entire hard drive, and when you want to section the space in two the software sometimes cannot because the last half of the hard drive got covered.
This can be avoided in 2 ways:
1.) when you first install OSX.
You can install the very minimal amount of OSX then STOP (before updates or anything else) and use BootCamp (in Applications / Utilities) to JUST partition your drive then STOP and continue with OSX updates, 2nd DVD, whatever.... Then whenever you are ready, finish installing your BootCamp stuff. The software is totally designed to do this without any tricks or special knowledge.
What you have done - essentially - is to occupy the smallest amount of hard drive space when starting your OSX install - and then partition - only to stop and finish the OSX install + update. This works very well, actually.
2.) If you already have done a full install and BootCamp cannot continue, you have to move the data to one side of the hard drive by one of two methods:
2a.) Clone your hard drive (to an external hard drive) using (free trial) Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper or Time Machine and then re-install it all. For some reason this process (while mildly risky - it may fail) lays all the data in a tidy "stack" and one side of the hard drive, allowing BootCamp to continue,
2b.) purchase iDefrag (no Free Trial available) and defragment your whole OSX install using their special Boot Disk in the PREBOOT environment. Defragging an Apple has to be done as a Boot Disk operation - otherwise it's useless.
iDefrag costs money and is more work than anything other method (I've done it) but at least you own it and can use it to speed up your install down the road (results for speed are mild but actually noticeable). The iDefrag procedure is NOTHING like Windows Defrag (which is free of cost and almost effortless) but the results are very similar.
Cheers - NAS
PS - actually I wonder if MAYBE a re-installation of the OS (archive & install NOT erase & install) would have a tidy enough result that the data would all be shoved to the correct end of the hard drive. Might work! Would be an experiment though...

  • Partitioning Hard Drive for Use with Mac (Time Machine) and Windows

I have a brand new Imac on which I am also running WIndows Vista through Boot Camp (sweet, by the way). I have a large external hard drive on which I set up Time Machine easily enough. I would like to partition the drive somehow so that I could use half the drive to separately back up files on the WIndows side, but I can't seem to do this. Any suggestions? Is this even possible with Time Machine?

You can use Disk Utility create two partitions. Choose FAT for the Windows partition and Mac Extended (Journaled) for the Mac. One limitation of FAT32 is that you can't write files bigger than 4GB. You can reformat this partition as NTFS within Vista which will allow bigger file sizes but you won't be able to write to this partition from within OS X without other utilities. Also you can't write to the OS X partition from Vista without other software.
Time Machine will not be able to back up the windows formatted drive partition.

  • Partitioning an External 320gb drive for use with Time Machine and...

I want to be able to use my Western Digital 320GB external drive for use with Time Machine and to use as extra storage space on both my Mac and when I boot into Windows Vista.
    Is this possible?
I was playing around in Disk Utility and would I partition the part I want to use for Time Machine with the Mac OS Journaled, and whatever I want as space for windows, use a MS - DOS format?
    Has anyone done this before?
    Cheers-

Unless you are using 64 bit version of MSWindows (64 bit XP/Vista), it won't be able to handle a disk with GUID partition table (GPT). Disks with Apple Partition Map (APM) or GUID partition table are the only ones that Time Machine will work with (not MBR disks). Note also that the MBR/APM/GPT are at the DISK level and not the partition level, so don't mix the format with partitioning scheme. Time Machine disks are meant to live in the Mac universe (for now, anyway) and sharing with the MSWindows 32-bit universe is not possible.

  • Partitioning an ext. HD for use with Time Machine HFS+/FAT32

Hi, I hope that this question is not already answered somewhere - I did a couple of searches but couldn't find the answers I need.
I'm setting up an external LaCie 500GB HD (USB 2.0) for a friend, in order to use it for Time Machine backups (one partition) and as a non-backuped "data dump" (music / films etc.).
My plan is the following: Partition the ext. HD into a 200 GB HFS+ Journaled partition for use with Time Machine, and a 300 GB FAT32 partition for data (FAT32 to ensure the interoperability with PCs).
I have a couple of questions (apart from if you think the proposed setup is good in general):
    1. The Time Machine partition would be used to back up a MacBook with a 120GB HD - in your opinion, is 200GB too much/enough/too less space?
    2. In general, does Time Machine work with partitions on ext. HDs as seen in the setup I propose? (or should I use a drive with only one partition?)
    3. are there any possible problems I might run into when partitioning a drive into two different file systems as HFS+ and FAT32?
    4. Is it OK to use the Leopard Disk Utility for this or should I use another application?
thanks a lot for your answers!

    Hi,
Could you please share the answers you found?
I'm going through a very similar situation...
    Thanks!

  • Unlocked old iPhone 3GS for use with pay as you go sim in the UK on vacation. O2 sim works while ph plugged in.  Unplugged, works short time and crashes.  Sometimes won't even re-boot.  Software on phone up to date as far as 3GS goes.

I brought an old IPhone 3GS to the UK on vacation for use with sim card.  I had the phone unlocked with approval and instructions from ATT.  Store in the UK recommended O2 pay as you go sim which works as long as the phone remains plugged into the wall.  Once unplugged, it will work for a short time and then always crashes.  Sometimes it will re-boot and crash again and sometimes it will not re-boot at all.  One store told me to sync with itunes which I did on my Mac Book.  I don't know if the sim is defective or if the software of the 3GS is just not compatible with the sim when on the battery.  I have updated the software on the phone as far as it will go.  Any suggestions?  Maybe the phone is too old to use with the latest pay as you go sim cards.  I am disappointed that this phone has not been reliable as a pay as you go and I have had to purchase a UK phone here in order to have a reliable phone.

There is nothing you can do. You bought an illegally unlocked phone off Ebay. A lot of sellers there will tell you it is unlocked but the first time you try to update the operating system it will put the lock back on to the carrier the phone was originally locked to. Sorry but unless the carrier it was locked to will unlock the phone I am afraid you have a very expensive paper weight now. You should have bought it from a reputable dealer instead of ebay.

  • Doesn't play songs, "itunes is not configured for use with mac-formatted"??

Hi, new ipod shuffle. Seems to charge fine, all indicator lights function as expected. Everything looks fine in itunes. But it doesn't play songs. I have the most recent versions of itunes and the ipod software. Re-set, updated, and restored, nothing works. Even restored using the restore utility. Re-started computer. Checked for volume control. Won't play songs. Tried different file types. Songs play fine from itunes library and from the device's library within itunes. Tried different headphones. Hooked it up to computer speakers. Turning volume all the way up on device and speakers, heard some very faint rhythmic static, so my guess is the jack socket (or whatever you call it) is just messed up, but it seems weird that it can transfer power and data to the device but doesn't work for sound...
The only other issues that have come up is that the drive disappears in explorer once it syncs with itunes. Other people who've noticed this seem to have completely different problems so I don't think it's related.
Also, I have MacDrive on my computer. And when it starts up with the ipod plugged in, MacDrive offers the message "Itunes is not configured for use with Mac-formatted ipods." It offers to automatically reconfigure itunes so it can read mac-formatted ipods. Since I've restored the device, I don't see why formatting should be an issue so I say "no."
Should I try letting macdrive do its format thing? Should I try formatting the ipod disk on the My Computer menu? Or should I just email apple and tell them the jack's busted?
    Thanks for any thoughts!

Well, I have had my iPod for about 3 years, it is a 4th generation non-video 40 GB. One day it just stopped working, and now it does not play any songs. when I turn it on it makes this odd whirring sounds that computers make when they try really hard to do something. I cannot charge it, and it is not recognized by iTunes. Also when I turn it on, I get the apple.com/ipod/support (or whatever it is) screen. Needless to say, my warranty is expired, and so I cannot do anything for it except get a new battery, or buy a new one. Is there any way to fix this problem, or anyone out there who is experiencing the same thing?
I'm having the exact same problem with my wife's iPod. However it will play about 3 seconds of a song and go onto the next song.
If there is anyone out there that can help please do!

  • Best hard drive for use with Time Machine

    Hi,
Has anyone determined what the best external hard drive is for use with Time Machine? Is there a particular one that works exceptionally well with Time Machine, or is it much of a muchness?
I'm looking for a Firewire 400 & Firewire 800 drive that STAYS ON all the time, and doesn't automatically spin down or spin up like the rubbish WD My Book drives do.

I can't tell you if it is the "best" hard drive for you to use with TM, but I'm quite happy with the 500 GB Buffalo Technology DriveStation Combo TurboUSB I bought recently. It is quiet, quite inexpensive for the capacity (I paid about $120 for one on sale at Fry's), & completely compatible with OS X & TM.
Best of all for me, it automatically powers down when my iMac sleeps. It also spins down after a time if the Mac's Energy Saver preference "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is checked; otherwise it remains spun up until the Mac is put to sleep or switched off.
It comes with "Turbo" USB & Memeo "AutoBackup" software, neither of which I installed. (The box didn't claim these extras came in a Mac version but both Mac & Windows versions were included on the CD.) Out-of-the-box, I reformatted the drive with the Apple Partition Map scheme & two partitions, a 160 GB one for cloning my internal drive & the rest for TM. The drive works perfectly for both uses & seems quite fast, as one would expect from a 7200 rpm SATA drive.

  • Problem-Starting InDesign Server for use with CORBA / Java and IOR file not generated

I'm trying to start Indesign Server cs3 for use with Corba, as per the document the server should generate the start-up message like this..
    InDesignServer -iorfile c:\ior.txt -pluginpath Server\Corba
[server] Writing IOR to ... and it should generate the IOR file
but I'm getting the usual start-up message and the IOR file is not generated, I hope IOR file is required for Java component interaction with IDS, kindly help me to solve this.
    Thanks in advance.

[From Susan Doan, who is having trouble posting to the forum today}:
It looks like the example command line in the "Intro to InDesign Server" pdf is using curly quotes instead of straight quotes. If you copy the command from the pdf and paste it in your command shell, it won't work because of the curly quotes.
You can run the command without the quotes as Rich has said, but, as will all command lines, if your path contains a space, you will need to put quotes (straight ones!) around the path.
    Thanks,
    Ole

  • USB portable ext. HD for use with MBP & FCE????

I've seen a 120 GB USB portable external Seagate HD for $117. Would this be usable as a scratch disk for use with my MBP 2.0 and final cut express HD 3.5. Are there problems with using USB externals? FW external hd's seem to be a good deal more expensive.
This may belong in the FCE forum but I thought someone here that uses an MBP might have specific experience with it.
    Thanks.
    Maurice

I use a Seagate 160GB 2.5" 5400 external as mirror/scratch partitions and it works OK however, if I'm capturing at high res I usually write to the internal drive (that's running at 7200) to avoid any frame loss ...

  • Can PowerPC applications be converted for use with Lion OSX? If so, how?

Can PowerPC applications be converted for use with Lion OSX? Ifso, how?

    Three workarounds:
    1.  If your Mac supports it, partition your internal hard drive or use an external drive and install Snow Leopard.  Then you can "dual-boot" into Snow Leopard when you want to run your PowerPC applications.
    2.  Upgrade and/or find alternative replacements for your PPC software that run without Rosetta.
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7 in Lion:

What is the maximum resolution available for use with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter?

    Hey guys,
I found out an answer by myself...
The missing link : the MacBook Pro needs to be powered... as in you need to plug the charger in...
In conclusion, you simply plug everything, turn on the MacBook Pro, close the lid, and there you go !

Most MP3 capable devices should play OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks.
If you intend to transfer OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to an Apple® device, note the following…
iTunes® v9.0.2 (or newer) is required.
The Apple device must be formatted for use with Microsoft® Windows®.
The iTunes setting 'Manually manage music…' must be enabled for the device before you can complete the transfer. Adjust this setting in iTunes as follows…
Connect the iPod® to your computer.
If it does not launch automatically, open iTunes v9.0.2 (or newer).
In iTunes, locate the device in the left vertical navigation panel (under heading 'DEVICES'), and click the device.
    The 'Summary' screen is displayed.
Place a checkmark next to 'Manually manage music…'.
    Click the 'Apply' button.
The iTunes 'Summary' screen refreshes, and the changes are saved.
    If desired, close iTunes.

I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories copied to it etc. I want to use it on my IMAC for backup. I see it on my my IMAC . I can open files etc.  But I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. I don't care if I lose current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

The apple ID was his personal account and can no longer gain access. Im sure I can get purchase recipts from the accounting department if needed. I tried to put the Ipad in restore mode and used itunes to "recover" the ipad but it still wont let me in because he registered the device with the "lost iphone" feature or whatever that is.
