Bootcamp cant use USB stick to download drivers.

My Macbook Pro cant seem to use the USB stick to download the drivers for Windows. I have install Windows on a new partition but cant use it since the machine does not talk with the software without the drivers.
Every time I try to download them, it tells me ''Unable to save the Windows support software on the selected disk. An error occurred while saving the Windows support software.'' (English translation from French).
Went twice to the Genius Bar, lost my time twice and I dont really know what to do.

Good Afternoon Juliendls,
The resources below will explain how to setup Boot Camp using a USB.  What version of Windows are you trying to install?  Is it possible that you have not formatted the USB media for Windows?
How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support

Frequently Asked Questions about installing Windows 7 with Boot Camp - Apple Support
https://support.apple.com/en-lb/HT202008
Where can I get the Windows Support Software (Windows drivers)?
Use Boot Camp Assistant to automatically download the software for your Mac and the versions of OS X and Windows you are using. Refer to System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems for more information.
How do I use the Support Software I downloaded from the web page?
The download file is a .zip file. Double click it to uncompress it.
Copy the Support Software to the root level of a USB flash or hard drive that is formatted with the FAT file system (see question below for steps on how to format).
Attach the hard drive to the USB port of your Mac after Windows 7 is installed.
Double-click the Boot Camp folder, then locate and double click the "setup.exe" file.
Installation of the drivers can take a few minutes. Don't interrupt the installation process. A completion dialog box will appear when everything is installed. Click Finish when the dialog appears.
When your system restarts your Windows 7 installation is done.
How do I format USB media to the FAT file system?
Use Disk Utility to format a disk for use with a Windows computer.
Important: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
Type a name for the disk. The name’s maximum length is 11 characters.
Click the Erase button, and then click Erase again.
Hope that helps ...
- Judy

I cant' use microsoft word after downloading Maverick. What do I do?

If it is Office for Mac 2004, you will need to update to Office for Mac 2008 (unsupported) or Office for Mac 2011 to be compatible with Mavericks. If you already have the latter installed, have you applied all Microsoft updates, and ran Disk Utility to verify/repair permissions on your boot drive?
Using Microsoft’s recommended removal process, you may have to reinstall Office for Mac 2011, and then reapply all outstanding updates. Then repeat the Disk Utility action as mentioned above.

Paste it into another location on the laptop, and then drag it from there into the open iTunes window. iTunes uses a database to determine what's in the library instead of looking at the content of the iTunes Music folder.

  • After BIOS Update cannot boot Satellite C640 using USB Stick

After upgrading my Toshiba Satellite C640-10E (PSC02E) bios to 2.00 WIN, I cannot boot the laptop using USB Stick, When I checked the BIOS using F2 I was stunned because the USB connected to laptop was labeled as FLOPPY drive. Is there any option to downgrade the BIOS?
    Thanks

From my experience the BIOS is able to boot from
    - USB FDD (floppy disk)
    - Primary HDD,
    - USB Memory stick
    - Network (LAN)
So I dont think that your USB memory is recognized as a USB FDD but the USB FDD appears as a separate boot device.
It would be interesting to know if another USB flash memory would act as your old USB flash stick.
PS: as Tonny suggested: you cannot downgrade because you dont have previous BIOS version only Toshiba service agents are able to downgrade the BIOS using traditional BIOS.

  • Bootcamp installation using USB drive

    Hi,
My CD/DVD drive does not work. Any Cd I put in gets ejected out after a few seconds.
I need to install Windows 7 on my machine.
I wanted to know if it is possible to create an iso image of the installation and proceed by loading it using a USB drive?
Does Bootcamp recognize USB drive to install from?
Or is there a better way to do this??
    Please help.
    Thanks

    Hi,
have a read at Apple BootCamp Setup Guide for MacBook Air http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Boot_Camp_Install-SetupLate2010.pdf
And the procedure is described here http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31012_7-20020513-10355804.html
For preparing the USB-Stick you have to have access to a Windows-PC.

  • Cannot install windows 8 using usb stick on G400s FreeDOS version

I'm having some difficulties to get windows 8 installed on this laptop. is there any secrets or tricks on BIOS that I'm not aware of?? I have installed windows 8 on many laptops using same pendrive without having trouble previously.
I have tried legacy mode and UEFI mode/boot without any luck

    hi wayne07,
Thanks for using Lenovo Community Forums!
    Inside BIOS
        Under Boot Tab
              Change Boot mode to Legacy
               USB Boot should be enabled
        Under Security
Secure Boot Has to Be disabled
In case the options above are grayed out in your BIOS, Got to Exit Tab and Change OS Optimized Default to Other OS
    and check the options again.
Once All are Set Make sure to save all changed by hitting F10 and enter for Yes
After Hitting enter It will Restart and You have to keep on tapping F12
this should pull up the Boot Menu letting you select where to boot. You should have now your USB Stick as an Option.
    Let me know your findings

  • Cant mount usb sticks with fat32 ISO-8859-1 2.6.31-ARCH

when trying to mount my usb sticks from xfce4 desktop(halmount).
Following error occurs (as told by dmesg).
FAT: IO charset ISO-8859-1 not found
First i suspected hal being the culprit but now im not so sure anymore.
    im using stock 2.6.31-ARCH.
when i checked the .config for the stock kernel CONFIG_NLS_ISO8859_1=y is enabled in the kernelconfig, and also everything below to support fat32.
    CONFIG_FAT_FS=m
    CONFIG_MSDOS_FS=m
    CONFIG_VFAT_FS=m
    CONFIG_FAT_DEFAULT_CODEPAGE=437
    CONFIG_FAT_DEFAULT_IOCHARSET="iso8859-1"
    CONFIG_NTFS_FS=m
but when i list the modules nls_iso8859-1.ko is missing.
    #~ls -a /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso*

    /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/kernel/fs/nls/nls_iso8859-9.ko
So i suspect the newest kernel broke mounting with hal.

Based on the information given in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82176, I changed in /etc/rc.conf from LOCALE=en_GB.iso88591 to LOCALE=en_GB.utf8, uncommented en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8  in /etc/locale.gen, issued # locale-gen and after a reboot, I was able to mount my usb sticks again.
However, now I get "FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!" in dmesg. Is this something, I need to worry about...?

  • Installation using usb-stick & grub4dos

I want to install arch using grub4dos without any partitions and iso-writing. Just put iso on usb-stick, make some magic with grub4dos and install arch.
So, Now I can boot arch iso, but my boot from this iso crush.
    Grub:
    map --heads=0 --sectors-per-track=0 /arch.iso (0xff)
    map --hook
    root (0xff)
    chainloader (0xff)
this code works fine, arch.iso booting fine, that it loads kernel, but can't find device "boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds" because it search for disk-by-label=ARCH-BLABLA, but my usb-stick has FLASH label
I have tried to boot using kernel and initrd commands in grub, without loading arch boot menu - nothing works.
I have tried to change label, in arch boot menu I pressed tab, then change archlabel to FLASH (my usb-stick label), but it still can't find device.
    Any ideas?

Since grub4dos is still used for this purpose, and since this topic turns up on google as a first hit for some very generic search terms, I'll add an easy solution.
Arch can easily be booted via it's installation ISO using the OP's method, with a small prior to the initramfs mounting it's filesystems.
    after using
    map --mem (hd?,?)/path/to/arch.iso (0xff)
    map --hook
    chainloader (0xff)
    boot
GRUB chainloads up the isolinux bootloader from the iso now mapped in memory.
Upon selecting your architecture, isolinux begins the system's transition from real mode to protected mode.
It loads the kernel and initrd correctly from memory back to memory, however once the kernel is bootstrapped, the iso in memory is lost.
The mount's fail because the iso isn't designed to boot via grub4dos memory mapping.
You are however dropped to a rescue shell.
You can now mount the filesystem of the usb that the iso is contained within, and copy it back to memory, and with either a loopback mount or a symlink, you're good to go.
    # make a new directory to mount the usb partition
    mkdir /usb
    # mount the usb partition (you can check with lsblk or blkid both included in the initramfs shell)
    mount /dev/sd?? /usb
    # copy the iso to the /dev directory
    # or similar location that is preferrably passed on to the root filesystem at chroot
    cp /usb/path/to/arch.iso /dev/arch.iso
    # cleanup after yourself as a best practice i suppose (also want to remove the flashdrive right?)
    umount /usb;rmdir /usb
    # either of these methods works for me.
    losetup -f /dev/arch.iso
    # or
ln -s /dev/arch.iso /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_?????? # being the date on the iso label
    # You could also just copy the iso into the /dev/disk/by-label directory with the label as the file name "ARCH_??????"
    # exit twice because you drop back into rescue shell the first time.
    exit # or [ctrl] + [d]
    exit # or [ctrl] + [d]
Arch should boot correctly and quickly!

  • Can u use USB stick Internet on a Mac

How do I use my Internet USB stick from my pc now that I have a Mac???

    Hi,
Information about the USB modem model and the type of service from your mobile Internet provider would help.
Generally speaking, begin by checking whether connection software for Mac is available. If not, depending upon the modem and the service plan, there may be other solutions. One can be to use a separate mobile broadband router (with support for the USB modem in question), and then establish a Wi-Fi connection between the computer and the router.

  • Bootcamp and VMWare Fusion, possible problem with Bootcamp, cant see USB.

    Hey,
Would really appreciate your help. So I have MBP mid 2010 with the latest version of OSX Mountain Lion and decided to install Windows 7 on it. I gave it to the professional IT guy, who installed Windows 7 through the latest version of VMWare Fusion. It is not bad overall, but at times incredible slow (which might be because of my slow processor).
So I decided to install Windows 7 through the BootCamp Assistant - USB way. And did the following steps:
1)Format USB, put Windows 7 .iso image on it
    2) Installed the latest Windows software through the Bootcamp (step2 tick). However, it said that the latest version would be installed only after Windows 7 is installed (in step3 tick). I clicked OK and moved to Step 3
    3) I started Installing Windows and had a few errors (which were solved by repairing the HDD after rebooting in recovery mode), but all went fine until almost the end. Before the bar almost moved to the end my macbook went to reboot and I though it was all done and ready. I clicked the alt at *ding* sound and no USB was detected.
I checked disk utility and the thing was portioned.
I was thinking that MBP doesn't recognize the second Windows installed, and VMWare Fusion needs to be deleted in order to run Bootcamp. I haven't deleted anything, wanted to ask for advice first.
Any one could think of what's wrong? Thank you.

You can only install Windows from a USB in one of these computers:
    - MacBook Pro with Retina display.
    - MacBook Air.
    - Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
    - iMac (Late 2012).
Your Mac doesn't support the Windows installation through a USB drive. However, you have installed Windows through a USB drive. What did you do?
You did an EFI installation (or a native installation). Apple doesn't support this option because of the huge number of problems it gives, and you have probably erased OS X (or you erased the Windows partition that Boot Camp created, both possibilities). The error you mentioned in 3) was probably that the Windows installer detected that you have a MBR disk instead of a GPT one, and you erased everything.
First of all, to make sure that you erased everything, hold the Option (Alt) key while your Mac is starting. If you see the OS X partition, start up from it, and make a complete backup of your files with Time Machine.
Then, what I recommend you is to erase the whole drive by starting in Internet Recovery (hold Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting), and use the Time Machine option to restore your files

The reason i flash is for compatibility issues
If an issue is noted, now that you have found the forum, before a flash, many times answers may point to something other than a UEFI/BIOS problem. Anyway, if you have the Intel ME driver, chipset driver, and USB Renesas 3.0 driver installed, there are no UEFI/BIOS settings other than enabling all the USB 'enable' options. In this situation, when a keyboard did work, and then didn't with a flash to a newer release UEFI/BIOS, MSI needs to be made aware of this so they can address it in an upcoming release. Again, if there are no compatibility issues experienced with an existing/older UEFI/BIOS version, there is no practical reason for flashing. It is not a driver.
    If and when a flash is required, please use the forum's USB flasher found here at this link;
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0
After a flash, it is also recommended to do a full battery removed CMOS clear and reset.

  • Can't see files on usb stick - folders are there but no files inside

    Hello
I plugged in my usb stick to download some pictures I have on there. The folders of the different albums are there and the info says the folders are of the right size (5gb for instance) but the files do not show so I can't copy them onto my Mac.
I tried it on a pc and it shows all the picture files and works fine.
I originally downloaded the pictures from my camera whilst abroad on a PC in a cafe and then transferred to the USB.
    Anyone got any clues?
    Thanks.....

  • Mac Mini 2005 edition without wireless, will USB stick work?

I am looking to setup my mini (2005 edition) so that it can connect to my wireless n/w. Is it possible to use a standard USB Wireless stick and take up one of the spare usb holes or will i need to get a specific USB wireless stick instead of say "Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter"?
    Many Thanks
    Kinsley

    Hi, (ready or a rant??)
I used to have a pre-Intel mini. I used USB sticks - I found them very unreliable. The Belkin had no instructions (for connecting to the mac) and I never managed to get it to work properly. The DLink worked but my mini crashed frequently and then we updated to 10.4 and there were untold issues and the final straw came when our network was upgraded to wireless g - as at the time the D-Link wireless g usb stick was not compatible with 10.4. So I would advise if you use a USB stick be aware that it will most certainly be unreliable at best!
Anyway, I went to "upgrade" my mini, earlier this year, (as apple say it's possible) I was told by the store staff that my mini was no-longer upgradable and most people did it when they brought their machines. (When I brought mine however, being one of the first, no upgrade kit was available in stores!!)
To cut a long boring story short... you are almost certainly unable to upgrade the very first mini's produced as they no-longer make the required "kit". However, if you have a later pre-Intel version you may well be in luck, just do it quick! (Many of the store staff don't have a clue which kit goes with which mini either!!! I don't know how many weeks I went backwards and forward - they ordered this kit, that kit oh boy....) Anyway I kicked up a huge fuss and was fortunate enough to get my old mini upgraded to an Intel with wireless installed!
    So good luck!!!
