Bootcamp corrupted Mac OS X partition - need recovery software.

While I was installing Windows, the display went to sleep. I pressed the space bar to wake it, forgetting it was on the partition select screen. So I opened the Mac OS X partition, corrupting it.
The disk won't mount anymore. My question is what is the best data recovery software out there? Is there any software that could completely restore it as a bootable drive?
I don't mind paying but a free trial would be essential to check that I can restore everything I need.
Thank you. I'm off to buy a time capsule now.

The Boot Camp PDF Guide and FAQ mention more than once, backup your files / system before you begin.
http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Restore in Disk Utility
TimeMacine
SuperDuper
Carbon Copy Cloner
Having two methods like TimeMachine plus bootable backup is best insurance and more useful.
Data Rescue II isn't designed for corrupt or failed partition maps.
You could install Mac OS to 30-300GB of an external bootable hard drive, and use that to try DRII, and use the other partition on it for recovery and TimeMachine later.
When Windows gets installed, may want to use WinClone in OS X to backup XP partition.
TimeCapsule isn't bootable, so as useful as it might be, I'd still invest in USB/FW.
http://www.macsales.com/firewire has full line.
Boot Camp didn't do anything, they call that operator error. There have been XP install CDs that don't ask or pause and have over-written the users Mac OS volume.

  • Bootcamp corrupted Mac HD

I installed Bootcamp again for the third time since I want my big collection of games to carry on, even on my mac. So the first 2 times went great (cough), both of them ended in my Machintosh HD being corrupted. So the third time, the installation went as always, smooth and all. My drivers worked fine and I very happy.
Now recently Windows started bugging me about some updates that needed to be done, so I installed them. Not knowing that that would exactly corrupt my Mac HD. So when I boot into recovery and start up DiskUtil, it tells me that it can't be repaired, I need to back everything up, and start over. Now, I don't want to go though this process again (for the third time) since what DiskUtil is telling me, is not true in my eyes. I can access every file on my Mac HD from my Windows partition (that still works fine) but when I try to boot into Mac, it eventually shut down after the well known grey progress bar.
So I did my fair share of Googling and found out that Windows likes to use the Mac HD as swap or something similar during updates. I think this is also the cause of my problem. Everybody says that Windows doesn't has write permission but I can easily get Files on my Mac HD from Windows. So, my question basicly is, how can I fix this stupid (bug) annoyance, so I can use my mac again without losing all my files. My timemachine backup is 2 weeks old and a lot of stuff happend in that time period.
Any info would be of great help. I can do everything (verbose and single user mode etc.), the only that doesn't work is actually booting into Mac OS X.
The errors I'm getting during DiskUtil repair are, threads and invalid directory count.
    A big thanks in advance!

I tried to use DiskWarrior but it wasn't booting on my iMac Late 2012 so I guess it's not yet updated for my machine. Any other suggestions of what I can do?

  • I lost all the recovery partition to recovery mac mini from beginning, what do I need to do? please help

I lost all my partitions to recovery my mac mini server, what do I need to do to put them back on? help Thanks

Did your Mac Mini come pre-installed with Mountain Lion? If so, use Internet Recovery (Command+Option+R) keys at restart. You should see a spinning globe. This will boot into Apple's server Recovery HD and let you reinstall ML. So, you will need an Internet connection. Your apps and data will not be touched as this will just install the OS on top of itself.
Backup your system first before doing the above.

    Hi nicoczyz,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The steps you have taken to troubleshoot the issue of not being able to create a Windows partition are good ones.  The resource below provides another possible scenario that may be the issue here.  It's not the exact error message as your screen shot and the article references Windows 8, but the troubleshooting steps are still relevant:
Boot Camp: Partition alert message when using Boot Camp Assistant - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203913
This symptom may occur if you have partitions on your startup drive in addition to the following:
    one OS X partition
    one Boot Camp partition
one OS X Recovery partition (normally not visible in Disk Utility)
If Boot Camp Assistant detects a Microsoft Reserved (MSR) or Windows Recovery partition on your hard drive, you may see this message.  The Boot Camp Assistant cannot continue until the extra partition is removed.
Microsoft Reserved and Windows Recovery partitions can be identified as unmounted partitions with the name "disk0s3" or "disk0s5" in Disk Utility. To remove these partitions, use OS X Disk Utility.
Important: Deleting the wrong partition can cause data loss. Be sure to back up both your OS X files and Windows files before attempting this procedure.
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    Click the Partition tab.
Look for an extra partition named “disk0s3" or “disk0s5”. Select this partition so it is highlighted.
Click the Remove Partition button ( - ).
Make sure the partition you selected is noted in the sheet that appears.
    Click Remove.
When Disk Utility finishes, close the Disk Utility window to quit the app. The Boot Camp Assistant can now be used to reinstall or update your existing Windows partition.
Set up a Windows partition on your Mac - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204009
Before you can install Windows your Mac, you need to create and then format a Windows partition.
Setting up a Windows partition is one of the steps for installing Windows on your Mac. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create the partition, then use the Windows installer to format it.Create the Windows partition
To create the Windows partition, open Boot Camp Assistant and follow the onscreen instructions. Boot Camp Assistant is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
Use only Boot Camp Assistant to create the partition. If you partition with another app and then use Boot Camp Assistant, the drive with the partition could be erased.
Boot Camp Assistant creates the partition only if the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and doesn't already have a partition created by Boot Camp Assistant. If Boot Camp Assistant sees other partitions, it may warn you that the startup disk cannot be partitioned.
If you need help determining the best size of the partition, refer to your Windows documentation. For Windows 8, the partition should be at least 30 GB.
If Boot Camp Assistant says that verification failed, repair the drive using Disk Utility. If that doesn't help, back up your drive and reinstall OS X.
The drive you're partitioning must be an internal drive. If you have more than one internal drive and the drive you're partitioning is not in the first drive bay, remove the drives in the lower-numbered bays, then reinstall them after installing Windows. A Fusion Drive is treated as one drive, and the Windows partition is created on the disk drive instead of the flash drive (SSD).
    Format the Windows partition
Use the Windows installer to format the Windows partition that Boot Camp Assistant created. When you're asked where to install Windows, select the partition named "BOOTCAMP":
Then click Format to begin formatting the partition using the NTFS file system. If you're installing Windows 7 or Windows 8.0, you won't see the Format option until you click "Drive options (advanced)":
If the installer says that it couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one, disconnect any Thunderbolt storage devices connected to your Mac. Reconnect them after installing Windows.
If you see “No Boot Disk Attached” when starting up your Mac, the Windows partition probably isn't formatted correctly. Remove the partition, then repeat the previous steps for creating and formatting the partition.
    Modify the Windows partition
Remove the partition, change its size, or change its name.
    Remove the partition
Use Boot Camp Assistant to safely remove Windows and the Windows partition from your Mac, restoring your startup drive to a single Mac partition. You may want to back up your information first, because removing the partition erases all of the data it contains.
    Open Boot Camp Assistant.
Select “Remove Windows 7 or later version," then click Continue.
    Do one of the following:
If your Mac has a single internal disk, click Restore.
If your Mac has multiple internal disks, select the Windows disk, select “Restore disk to a single OS X partition,” then click Continue.
Change the size of the partition
It's not possible to change the size of the partition after installing Windows, but you can remove the partition and create a new partition of the correct size. Don't try to resize your partition with Windows or a third-party app.Change the name of the partition
You can rename the Windows partition from within Windows. For instructions, refer to your Windows documentation.

I removed my Windows 7 in boot camp...then i restart the imac the mac HD is gone only recovery hd left...what do I need to do to recover the mac hd?

Hi I just got out of this situation after two weeks of forums and have tried any kind of different solutions.
If you have no response using start-up keys and you can't choose your start-up disk when pressing "Option" here is what to do.
The problem in this situation is common to users that install Boot Camp and at one stage the installation fail, may be a bug in BootCamp or just our mistakes, it doesn't really matter here is the solution.....
If you can start Windows, or Start the installation dvd of Windows do it, when In windows you will need to install BootCamp windows Driver, if you try to use the Apple downloaded file, it will not work.
You need to find the zip file in internet I found it with Google.
When you have the file run a "cmd" window with Administrator privileges.
Navigate in the folder that you have decompressed and open the folder Drivers/Apple/ you will see the file BootCamp.msi or BootCamp64.msi, of course choose the one that correspond to your Windows System .... type the file name and hit enter .... the drivers will install .... but what we really want to be install is that little icon on the system tray (right bottom).
After we will restart windows that little icon will give you the chance to restart the computer in OS X.
If something during the BootCamp and Windows installation had corrupted your OS X installation, you will have to reinstall, but at least you will be able to do it now. ;-) It took me two weeks and lot of researches, it's an hour job. Have fun.

  • Bootcamp problem with SL partition. need a solution.

Alright so, i bought windows 7 today and deleted my old XP partition on my MBP (early 2008) 17 inch laptop. I started up bootcamp after deleting my old partition (also though BootCamp), but after a few seconds of nothing happening, I got a popup saying "The Disk Partition cannot be partitioned because some files could not be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
I did some research and googled some things, but most are saying make a clone and fix it like that, but thats very complicated and I don't have the time to do all that now. I deleted some unneeded files and games and am about to retry it. In the case that this does not work, is there a way to do this without cloning my HDD, but still having my files intact? Shouldn't there be a way to do this by repairing disk permissions or something?
I did find this on Macworld - "But thanks to a tip elsewhere, I booted off my Snow Leopard install disk (hold the C key as you boot until the language selection screen appears.) From the Utilities menu on the install screen choose Disk Utility, then Repair Disk." I want to try this, but I never booted off my SL install cd and not sure if it will do anything to the files i have on my computer already. I backed up my files with Time Machine onto my external HD. I want to try that and see if it works. Any help? Thanks everyone!
EDIT: I am also thinking of trying this (which is probably what i found on macworld, just explained) http://pondini.org/TM/14.html

I did a disk verify, says that a file is corrupted and there is an extra file? or something like that. It says to repair from the disk. If i put it in and hold C while it boots up, nothing should be harmed, right? I backed up, but didnt clone (which is what is making me worried).

  • I don't know what i need. I'am a mac user but i need to run quick books premier. This is the only software i need in windows 7. Could i have some advise in  what is better for me, Bootcamp or parallels

I don't know what i need. I'am a mac user but i need to run quick books premier. This is the only software i need in windows . Could i have some advise in  what is better for me, Bootcamp or Parallels

The Intuit rep said they don't "support" QuickbooksPremier on a "virtual machine." Do you know what I risk by using it, anyway? thanks for the advice about Boot Camp vs Parallels, BTW!
I use QuickBooks Pro for Mac, so I haven't had need to try any of the Windows versions in a VM. But I can't think why it wouldn't work. From within the VM, QuickBooks Premier would believe it is operating on PC hardware within Windows.
I would guess they mean that the multiple user support wouldn't work from within the VM. But I would think that would also work. Windows can see the Internet from within the VM, which means it can see your network. So if Windows can see the network, then QB Premier should be able to, too.
I know you can get Parallels as a demo, and maybe you could get QB Premier as trial software. So if you already have a retail copy of Windows to load into a VM, it would only cost you time to test what's possible.

  • I'm looking to use Bootcamp on my iMac 24". If I download Windows 7 from the Windows website, can I properly install it to my Mac? Do I need the disks instead?

I'm looking to use Bootcamp on my iMac 24". If I download Windows 7 from the Windows website, can I properly install it to my Mac? Do I need the disks instead?
I'm hoping to download it from their website because I can pay $30 for the student discount instead of $119...

When burning the .iso file to a disc restrict the burn-speed to 2x
Otherwise the disc will most likely not work.
It's a common phenomenon on Macs.

  • HT4854 What size does the recovery partition need to be for Lion or Mt Lion?

What size does the recovery partition need to be for Lion or Mt Lion?

Maybe I'm approaching the problem the wrong way. My problem is that I installed a new HDD in my laptop after cloning it to a backup drive, and I wanted to install the OS after formatting the drive using Disk Utilities from my desktop machine. Since I had Lion installed from the App Store as a paid download, I thought I'd start with a freshly downloaded install of Lion, but I can't access the internet directly with my laptop since it has no OS or apps. So I'm downloading Lion to my desktop machine hoping to install it on my laptop as a Target HD. Is that possible? Does the App Store download allow choosing which drive to install on?

  • Deleted Mac Os X partition with bootcamp

    Hello all,
I recently tried to use bootcamp on my Macbook Pro, but in doing so i accidentaly deleted the Mac OS X partition part of my computer.
In other words, when i restart my computer and hold Alt (option) only "Windows" shows up.
When i put in the Mac installation disc i can't figure how to re-install the Mac portion of my computer
Does anyone have any experience with this problem?

Use what was said above, but after starting up and selecting your language be sure start Disk Utility; highlight your drive, select partition, and create or recreate one GUID partition. Having done so your drive will automatically be formatted Mac extended (journaled)--which is what you want. Quit Disk Utility, and return to your installation.

  • Bootcamp 10.6 refuses to install Windows 7 - NFTS partition needed

I did bootcamp procedure with Bootcamp assistant, the disc was partitioned, Windows disc inserted, but then it refused to do the installation, stating it is impossible to install Windows in the Bootcamp disc, since only NFTS dics  are possible for this. I thought Bootcamp assistant and procedures are aware of it ? Seems not ? Is there something I can do ?

Sounds like you did not read the guide with enough care on how to and what to do.
You have to format the FAT/MSDOS partition you created.
click on the button marked Advanced Option (I think) when you get to the target volume.
"to install Windows ON the BOOTCAMP Partition (not 'disc')
    PDF guide and support articles:
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
Also, ISO electronic images need to be burned at slowest reduced 2x speed for those that get theirs as download from .edu or MSDN.

  • 10.5.6 Update killed my mac, recovery software?

The title says it all. I'm looking for some HFS compatible recovery software. I've been using GetDataBack NTFS and FAT32 for years on PC systems.
I ran the 10.5.6 update on Wednesday night, and right before it was suppose to restart my macbook just turned off. Now it turns itself off everytime I try to boot into OS X. I have bootcamp setup so I've been using XP to get things done. I have Paragon's MacDrive installed on the XP partition and when I went to look at my Macintosh HD it said "This drive is either damaged or corrupted". I connected an external HFS drive to it and XP could read it just fine. Now, I'm pretty sure it's physically ok (since bootcamp works just fine) but I'm really worried about the data being corrupted. I have my first two weeks of notes from school, a partially built website, and some audio projects on the drive. I REALLY need to retrieve that data before I wipe it and reinstall leopard. I have access to a SATA to USB adapter, but I need to know what recovery software I should try.
    Any advice?

    Hi Blueh1ro,
I'm sorry your first experience of the Discussions was not a good one, usually we do much better here. I can only think that the lack of response was, is, due to the fact that you posted on a Friday night and by the time most Mac users get out on bail Saturday morning your question was too blurry or too far buried down the list already. Also, people responding here generally do so because they think they might actually know the answer. That could tell you something right there. Indeed, I don't know the answer, I just felt good manners warranted a reply of some sort.
And then there are two other things, your subject line and hardware. Subject lines like that come out after every software update. I know, I've posted ones like that myself before I was beat over the head a few times. At least you've been spared the beating. The real veterans, the ones whose advice you really need, get tired of replying to subjects like that because what they say is always the same, "Well, you backed up your system before you updated, right? Just use that to get back to where you were before". When they hear, over and over, that people don't have back ups, or, now, are not using Time Machine, their eyes glaze over and they go back to bed for the day.
And lastly, your hardware, though this should be the least of the reasons. You're using an intel MacBook. Many here are using regular desktop towers and many of those are still G4s and G5s. The latter of those people you lose right away when they begin reading of bootcamp and xp. And in addition there are special Discussion pages for MacBook users only: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/
Now you said you wanted recovery software, but what you really want is recovery software that fixes directories and such before recovering it or ideally you just want something that will fix the disks directory as it lies. Well, here's where I'm not on solid ground at all but I've pushed your topic up so others can have a look see again and comment. Diskwarrior is excellent, but I'm not sure it can fix an OS upgrade gone awry. And I'm not sure also that boot problems mean your data is corrupt. I would just try to get it off of there on another disk and see what's there. That's probably ignorant in my thinking though, hopefully others will chime in. Good luck.

  • 3D Vision via bootcamp on Mac mini (continued)

    Hi
Before I read this archived thread,
3D Vision via bootcamp on Mac mini
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2545736?start=0&tstart=0
I downloaded the latest NVIDIA driver 285.62 for my Mac mini server
    (2010,GeForce 320M graphic chip)
    for testing hdmi 1.4a frame-packing 3D output under windows7 x64 Boot Camp.
First time,I tried the NVIDIA driver with “recommended install” option,
then it output black screen, I can’t do anything,
so I entered the safe mode,
recover to the origin driver come with Boot Camp 4.01.
I find some suggestion from someone’s experience by Google,
second time, I tried the “Custom install-whole new install”
(or something like this, I did it under international version),
it passed the part where first time fail,
It seems OK then installation completed and reboot.
    After reboot,
I can’t enter the boot camp partition by pressing “option”during restart,
The list of choosing HDs or recovery HD option not shown at all,
    it just boot into OSX,
I can still see boot camp partition under “Finder”,
but boot camp is gone under Startup Disk control panel.
After repair procedure of Disk Utility,
the boot loader still not shown
& boot camp still gone under StartupDisk control panel.
The driver seems damaged the boot partition table.
I think I need to re-create the Boot Camp partition
    and re-install windows 7 again!
    Above is my foolish experience.
    The question is:
Is there anything I can try to recover my boot loader?
What’s the version of driver successfully support 1920x1080 24p 3D output?
Is the newest NVIDIA driver 285.62 available for mac mini
by modded.inf method mentioned from the archived discussion?
    Thank you~

After updating NVidia driver newer than 267.76,
I got black screen after Windows Logo shown during reboot.
    After countless annoying tests,
I installed the newest NVidia 285.79 driver without problem finally.
    My original prefered display configuration:
link the primary monitor with HDMI port
I already followed the GeForce Driver Installation Guide, step by step,
    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=169555
but there's still black screen after reboot.
THEN, I TRIED TO USE mini-DISPLAY PORT INSTEAD AND REBOOT AGAIN,
video signal was connected to my DELL 2707W(only DVI port)
by MiniDP to HDMI adapter/HDMI-DVI cable.
The display is NORMAL NOW !!
    Root Cause assumption:
Maybe the driver newer than 267.76 always regard miniDP as primary signal output port,
even if you set the HDMI port as primary.
I think this is a serious bug, but no solution after mote than 30 driver updating.
The following configuration worked on my Mac mini 2010 system:
    mini─miniDP to HDMI adapter─
    HDMI cable to HDMI splitter─┬HDMI-DVI cable─Dell 2707
                                                  └HDMI cable─ 3D projector
but I found that the configuration can't play 3D video...
So I changed the configuration to:
    Mac─miniDP to HDMI adapter─HDMI-DVI cable─Dell 2707
          └HDMI cable─ 3D projector
    For your reference.

  • Data Recovery Software for Mac.

I have 2 questions regarding data recovery from an external drive (WD My Book Essential).
    1. During a Bootcamp install, the backup taken using WD Smartware software has been replaced by a Windows folder and I cannot read the drive after reinstalling SL on my Mac Mini to retrieve my backup. If I erase the drive (as the software is asking me to do), can I then recover the lost backup files using data recovery software or will the file system on the external drive cause a problem. (Format is NTFS)
    2. Which data recovery software is best for for use on a Mac? Or do I recover using Windows software instead?
    Thanks.

If you want to recover data from a Windows partition, you probably need to use Windows recovery software. I'm not aware of any Mac data recovery software that can work with an NTFS partition, though there might be something out there I've missed. Do not erase the Bootcamp partition before attempting to use any recovery software if you can possibly avoid doing so (use Windows volume repair software if the volume won't mount); that will just make the recovery far more difficult.
    Good luck.
