Bootcamp expired? Erase a partition...

Hi all,
I want to erase a partition on my internal HD. I downloaded Bootcamp, but it won't open telling me it is expired. Is this true? Why?
Can I work around this; does anyone know a way for me to delete a windows partition from my mac side? I've been trying Disk Utility, but I can't get one single option (no buttons light-up) to be recognized. Disk Utility will not in any way recognize the partition, there appears nothing I can do with the app. What gives?
All replies are appreciated

Thanks for that Kappy.
Can you answer me this: now that the windows partition is erased, can the files in any way be accessed? Is it the case that the files still exist, but i've only erased the path to them (is that the right term?) ?
If the windows files do still actually exist can they in any way shape or form interfere with my OSX?
-If I understand correctly, windows and mac have different file formats (is that the right way to say it?) and are non-compatible.
Thanks you,
Vincenso

  • How can I erase NTFS partition on my Mac

When I tried to install Windows XP on my Macmini BootCamp created NTFS partition. You know it was a bad idea because XP killed MacOS
So I installed MacOS again and now I want to erase NTFS partition but Disk Utility can't do this
    Help!
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi Warder, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Disk Utility cannot unpartition a drive without erasing the entire drive. There are some utilities that can unpartition on the fly DriveGenius is one. (I'm not sure if it is Universal yet) Prosoft is a trusted software vendor but I would still do this "at your own risk".

  • Impossible to erase or partition internal HD - input/output error

When I tried to reinstall from the Install CD
the HD doesn't appear in the destinations volumes
The disk appear with Disk Utility, verification is ok
but impossible to erase or partition the disk
    (input/output error).
I tried to recreate a partition from another macBook as Target
but Disk Utility doesn't allow me such operation.
    Any idea?

Hi BDAqua, thank you for your answer
    I try to explain better:
I have two MacBook. I connected them with a firewire cable and I restarted the one which gives me problems holding T pressed. I then opened Disk Utility on the MacBook that's working properly and I performed a verification on the target disk (the one that gives me problem).
Verification (which resulted ok) was he only thing I could perform on the target disk.
I did run I Hardware test holding D, and even in the Verbose mode. Both says everything is fine.
In this very moment I'm running another Hardware Test and keeping an eye on it as you suggested.
I'm suspecting a massive hardware problem too since:
    - the partition of the disk appears grayed out in disk utility (like if is not mounted)
    - the installation dvd doesn't find a location to install the system
Could be the Hard Disk or could be anything? what do you think?

  • How can I reformat my hard drive if erase and partition don't work in disk utility and I get an error when I try to erase and install from the Leopard install disk?  I have had several kernel panics, but the volume shows up in startup disk.

I have had several kernel panics on my iBook G4; the panic message shows up just after the desktop appears. Although the startup volume shows up in Startup Disk, the installation disk reports an error when I attempt an erase and install. Disk utility is unable either to erase or partition the hard drive. The hard drive shows up in disk utility, but the startup volume doesn’t  HELP!!!

Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new?
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Erasing the disc and installing Mac OS X 10.5 will result in loss of the other applications (such as the iLife applications) which came pre-installed on the iBook.

  • Can I force the bootcamp wizard to skip looking for the bootcamp drivers?  I have already downloaded the latest drivers and loaded them on a FAT usb drive.  All I want is for bootcamp to create the partition and allow me to install windows 8 pro

    Hi Everyone,
Can I force the bootcamp wizard to skip looking for the bootcamp drivers?  I have already downloaded the latest drivers and loaded them on a FAT usb drive.  All I want is for bootcamp to create the partition and allow me to install windows 8 pro.
The bootcamp drivers have been downloaded from apple's website.  Filename:  BootCamp5.0.5033
    I have a iMac 27" late 2013 model.
NOTE:  I have downloaded the drivers manually from apples support site as the bootcamp wizard fails third of the way through the download.
    Appreciate any assistance.
    Regards,
    asdutoit

There is a missing point in this thread, and it is that the Boot Camp drivers for the Late 2013 iMac can only be downloaded from Boot Camp Assistant. The Boot Camp drivers available in the Apple site are not compatible with that iMac.
Delete the Boot Camp drivers from the USB drive, open Boot Camp Assistant and try to download the Boot Camp drivers again. If you get a message telling you that they could not be downloaded, I would try reinstalling OS X through OS X Recovery, by holding down Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up

  • Any need to defrag (by (reverse-)cloning) after erasing Windows partition?

I did this before creating the partition because I didn't have enough contiguous space to create it, then started doing it again after erasing the partition thinking it might be safest to assume the space might not get used as efficiently as the space that had been reserved for OS X.
Based on some very quick research, it seems like this was a silly assumption. But I haven't seen any article explicitly addressing whether any kind of hard drive maintenance/optimization might be useful after erasing a partition. Can anyone confirm that this is because it's just not something to be concerned about?
I've already nearly finished by clone/reverse-clone process, but I was thinking about doing it for my girlfriend's computer, too, since it's in the same situation. Looking to save some time.
    Thanks in advance.

Here is a link to an excellent user tip by ds store that will likely answer any question.

  • Strange error when Bootcamp attempts to create partition for Windows

I get a strange error when I tell Bootcamp to create a partition for Windows. I get to the Create a Partition stage. I select 20GB for Windows leaving 91GB (39GB free) for OS X. I then click Partition and it gives me the following error
*The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.*
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
My disk is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), I have closed all applications (besides Bootcamp Assistant) and I have even restarted and tried again to see if that might help. Nothing. I can't get it to partition. Any thoughts? Can I partition my disk manually through disk utility and then select it in Bootcamp?

    Hi,
this gets asked at least a thousand times by now.
Have a look at this thread for solution http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10540273&#10540273

  • How can I uninstall Bootcamp and Recover the partition for the Mac HD

How can I uninstall Bootcamp and recover the partition for the IMac HD?

Boot into OSX.  Go back into the Bootcamp utility in the Utilities folder and re-run it.  It will give you the option to remove the Windows partition and make the OSX partition fill the whole drive again.  OSX will NOT be lost in the process.  No re-installing necessary.  Only takes a few minutes or less to complete.

  • Bootcamp not using full partitioned amount.......

So my Bootcamp hard drive is partitioned for 25gb. However, it is only using 15gb. I am trying to install a game that is about 14gb but I don't have enough room for the other software I need. So, in short, Why won't it use those other 10 gb????!!! It's driving me nuts! They don't register as empty, but no matter how hard a search through all my files there's only a max of 14/15 gb of stuff on there. But I still keep getting these warnings saying that I have no hard drive space left.
Does anyone know what's going on?

It's up to you. I've never dealt with WinClone so I'm not sure how well it does or doesn't work. I do see it recommended on the boards often, though, and it's an application that works while you're in OS X. Worth looking at, at least!
When you repartition the drive, the Boot Camp Assistant may say it doesn't have enough space to create the partition, even though your hard drive certainly DOES have the space there. The issue is that the Assistant needs contiguous space (basically a large chunk all in one spot) and it can't find a spot big enough due to fragmentation on the drive. Applications like iDefrag could help, but, personally, I'd just reformat the drive and start over.

  • Locked Install Disk, Fails to Erase or Partition

For starters, I was having issues with the logic board/graphics of my 2007 Macbook Pro, (Model # A1226), currently running Mac OS X 10.8, (Mountain Lion). I managed to find a replacement logic board which I successfully installed. The laptop ran much smoother on OS X 10.7 (Lion) and that's what I've been trying to downgrade to, and that's where my problem continues.
I've got a downloaded install image on a usb stick, the file is "InstallESD.dmg". At some point, I was having issues with every option and did a recovery/restore of the hard drive from the usb stick. Surprisingly, at startup it brings me to the "Mac OS X Utilities" options which shows Lion being available as an install option, however after that point of selecting it, I get the message that the disk is locked. That is most likely because I restored the hard drive from the usb drive containing the bootable installer.
Whenever I try to partition or erase the drive, I get a "Fail to Erase" or "Partition Fail" message through Disk Utility. Even if I do a Cmd + R and try to reboot from the Recovery Disk for 10.8.5, (putting me back into Mountain Lion), I still get a "Locked Install Disk" message leaving me nowhere but stuck.
Ideally, I'd like to get back to Lion. I'm fine with erasing the hard drive, I have all my necessary files backed up, just not through Time Machine. I've also got what I thought was the bootable copy of Lion on the USB drive, but when I try to boot from there, the laptop is in a constant loading cycle with the apple logo replaced by one of those "no" symbols, (circles with the diagonal line), so I assume I didn't set it up correctly as a boot disk.

I think our problem is also hardware failure although without re-imaging a working surface pro 3 I can't be sure.
I tried what imfusio suggested in this thread.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d31384bc-4e96-4a5b-a400-637bd6006d81/failure-5456-unable-to-determine-destination-disk-partition-and-or-drive-surface-pro-3?forum=mdt
Unfortunately the deployment failed with the same ZTI Error - Unhandled error returned by ZTIDISKPART:
    Object required (424)
I then rebooted into WinPE and ran diskpart, I could see the two volumes (EFI and OSDisk). I then tried to format the OS disk volume using diskpart. I got a paramater is incorrect error and the disk was no longer visible with a 'list disk' command. So it's
like the format is putting the disk offline. I'm going to try restore one of these surfaces, apply all firmware updates then re-image. If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas.

I can't do that since I do nothing with Windows.
It sounds like it was hacked to run XP and then makes it not run OS X now.
Only thing I can suggest is to repartition the hard drive to a single HFS+, GUID partition and see if that allows you to install OS X.

  • BootCamp on a double partitioned drive

So the hard drive in my MBP is partitioned into two separate partitions. One for OS X and the other for all my data. I want to install XP for some games and so I would like to use bootcamp to do so. My question is, is the drive that bootcamp will partition limited to the one with OS X already on it? Or can I use it on my other partition that has all my data.
And second, should I want to revert back and delete the windows partition, will everything go back to the way it was? Or will I have to format and re-partition anything.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
the BootCamp Assistant (BCA) in OSX will only partition the harddrive when it is a single OSX volume with only one partition on it.
With your harddisk layout the BCA won't do anything.
Nonetheless, have a look here for ways to do what you have in mind http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071101065229169
When using the BootCamp Assistant for the partitioning, you can use it again later for completely removing the WIndows partition and assigning the diskspace back to OSX.
When using the other solutions you have to do that on your own with Disk Utility.

  • I cannot erase or partition new MB Air SSD drive

I have a two month old MB Air which was delievered with Snow Leopard and since upgraded to Lion at the AppStore.
Five days ago it turned itself off because of low battery power and it would not start up again even after 1 hour of charging the battery. I heard the system open but the screen was black. Finally, on the fourth restart, I just typed in my password into a black screen and it started and came back to life, but everything is completely messed up. No permissions repair because of an SUID error. No ability to erase the disk and reinstall the software (all grayed out). No ability to partition the solid state drive (all grayed out). Reinstalling LION on top of existing system does zero to improve the situation.
Does anyone know how I can get the SSD to erase or partition and do a clean install from the LION dmg I have (or go back online to download it again?)
To make things worse, I just opened the thumbnail drive with the system recovery software that came with the NEW MB Air and it isn't even recognized as a drive on this computer, or on a 3-day-old MB Pro I had to buy out of desperation while the MB Air is out of order, or on my 2-year-old MINI.  Now when your new computer dies, that's bad enough, but when the unwrapped and untouched Recovery thumbnail drive won't mount on ANY computer, that is insult to injury.
So far from Apple, bring it in for service. But I am in France for a month and I cannot deal with the French Apple store people in Paris because of language problems and this is "vacation time" in France which means come back in September.
Does anybody know how to FORCE this thing to erase or partition so I can try to correct the problems?  I am at a loss here.
    Thank you.
    Mike

    Hello Leigh
Thank you for the information. I was hoping to avoid installing Snow Leopard 10.5 which would then have to be updated with a 1gb update to 10.6 BEFORE it could be upgraded to LION.  I am in France in the country on holiday and using a low bandwith and high cost internet connection. C'est la vie. There was no way to get the Lion dmg file to give me any options whatsoever to use Utilities to access the Disk Utilities and erase the disk. Just never appeared. The full dmg in fact reverted to the internet to download files and the estimated time was four hours. Perhaps after that four hours I would have been given an option to erase and install "clean" but I didn't get that far.
The thumb drive with OS 10.5 never showed up in the finder or in Disk Utilities.
I am working through it now and I hope to be finished in two hours.
Moral of the Story:  Never let your computer shut down automatically because it is out of battery power. Disaster.
    Thank you.
    Mike

It won't affect other partitions unless a problem occurs. Back the computer up first.
