Bootcamp External Display Problem

I7 3.4GHz, 16gb Ram, AMD Radeon 6970M
I have come across a rather unique problem using bootcamp on my 27" 2011 iMac. I have had the computer for a while, and only recently downloaded windows 7 using bootcamp. i decided it would be cool to connect to my 1080p epson projector. However, when i set the resolution to 1080 on my mac, the projector screen got incredibly grainy and flashed on and off rapidly, making it entirely unusable. After some fiddling with with control panel, I discovered the problem was solved by changing the refresh rate to "30 Hertz Interlaced". All options above 30 had the same grainy problems. Well it was great to have a temporary fix, it is quite frustrating to have to use 30 Hrz, as i would much rather be using 60 (I can see the difference between the two). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What the screen is supposed to look like:

What it looks like when set to 60 Hertz(barely got a good picture because as i said it spasmodically flashes on and off):
http://prntscr.com/42mye4

what driver are you using?
with the amd chip I never ever ever ever had success using any other driver then the apple bootcamp driver
my imac is 21" 2011 6740 and I first installed windows 7 ultimate 64bit and later upgraded the install to win8 and then to win8.1
and when I stuck with the apple bootcamp driver I never had problems with my 24" dell connected by a tb->dvi converter
native res 1920*1080 75Hz

  • External Display Problem - SMC Reset Required After EVERY Restart

I have a mid-2010 macbook pro that I often use in Clamshell mode with an external display (an ASUS VS239H-P 23-Inch Full-HD LED IPS monitor). I connect to my monitor with an Amazon brand HDMi cable via a Monoprice Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter. I'm running OS X 10.8.4.
Here's the problem... whenever I go "mobile" and disconnect my macbook pro from the external display, my macbook seems to work fine at first, but if I ever need to restart my macbook, it thinks it is still in clamshell mode upon reboot.  The built in display stays dark, and if I close the lid, the power indicator lights up and stays lit up; if I open the lid, the light disappears. It doesn't even matter if the power cord is plugged in or not, the computer thinks it is in clamshell mode.  This occurs ANY time I restart my computer, whether I'm booting into bootcamp or OS X.  If I do an SMC reset, I can successfully restart my computer.  But if I ever need restart my computer again, and I haven't reconnected to my external display, the problem happens all over again.  The only other way to fix the problem is if I plug my external display back in, then unplug it, which seems to remind my macbook that the display has been disconected.  Unfortunatley I can't do this if I'm out for business and my display is not near me.
What gives? What can I tweak to fix this? I'd rather not have to wipe the HD and do a fresh install of the OS.

It might be the CMOS battery has failed. That battery supplies power to holds all the firmware data, the system management controller data. So on a restart it is losing all that stored data for the SMC. You need to take the system to apple and have it fixed.

  • 10.8.4 External Display Problem

Updated my rMBP to 10.8.4. The laptop rebooted, and the external display is not displaying correctly. How can I fix this?
The monitor has never had problems until immediatly after the update. The monitor attempts to display 1920x1080, but is offset. Part of it is off the screen, and is not horizantally long enough to fill the screen anyway. (Black bar on left side).
    Bootcamp Trial
    Booted into Windows 7 64bit
Monitor works fine, highest available resolution is 1280 x 1024.
Tried to set Mac resolution to 1280x 1024, works, but this is noticably less resolution than I had originally, before the update.
    Specs
    Retina Macbook Pro
    LG external monitor: FLATRON W2343T
    Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor
Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Same problem with:
    MacbookPro Mid 2009
    Asus VE247 External monitor
    Minidisplay port to VGA adaptor
    OS X 10.8.4
Only happens with VGA resolution 1920 x 1080, others resolutions or with HDMI adaptor works fine.
In windows 7 with Bootcamp works fine.
Downgrading to 10.8.3 with Time Machine resolve the problem.
    I tried with no results:
    - Change to the other internal GPU (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M to NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT)
    - Reset PRAM
    - recalibrate screen manually.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro sleep and external display problem

I recently upgraded to the new 2010 15 inch core i7 Macbook Pro. The problem i have is that it will not detect an external display (23inch Cinema) after waking from sleep. This happens after using the display to extend the desktop and also when using the Macbook in closed mode.
I've managed to get it to detect the display only after either restarting the Macbook completely or by going into energy saver and switching to dedicated graphics then going back to detect display.
It seems that when on integrated graphics it doesn't register that an external display is connected. If i leave a program open and running that causes the dedicated graphics to kick in then it works ok. If i close all programs, shut the macbook pros lid, computer sleeps and external display shuts off. If i click the mouse to wake with lid closed, apple logo lights, machine starts up few seconds later macbook returns to sleep. If i open the screen the machine wakes as normal but the external monitor doesn't.
Any help is much appreciated as its starting to frustrate me now...
    Many thanks
oh and im running OSX 10.6.3

I thought it was intermittent to begin with until i started looking into it. By leaving programs open, like aperture, before i put the machine to sleep it appears to wake the external monitor up without a problem. If i shut all programs or leave basic things open like safari and mail which don't require the dedicated graphics, then upon wake it wont register an external screen is connected.
Manually detecting displays in settings doesn't work.
Disconnecting and reconnecting mini display port doesn't work.
Turning off power to cinema display and powering back up doesn't work.
To get the display going again its either 1) turn off macbook pro and re-boot or 2) re-start the machine then the display is automatically recognised. Or 3) launch a programme that kicks in dedicated graphics then manually go in and detect displays again..... like magic the display then springs to life.
    No ideas anyone??

  • External display problems with snow leopard

I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my Macbook and it's created lots of problems with my LCD external display:
    - The display won't work at its native resolution (1680x1050) - it will flash up an image for 1/10 of second and then go black. I can only get it to work at a lower resolution, which looks AWFUL.
    - If I try to start up my Macbook with the lid closed and the display connected, the display won't work at all (it jams on the start up screen). It only works if I keep both of them running
I never had these problems when using Leopard. I've searched lots of forums and found that many people are having similar problems with external displays. Apple still haven't fixed the bug after repeated efforts from people to get if fixed.
Here are some threads (now closed) on this if you're looking for solutions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132912&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2136455&tstart=1

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10084332
    Common suggested fixes are:
    - Force OS X to use LCD font smoothing (does not work for me)
    - Clear the PRAM on start-up (does not work for me)
    - Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist (does not work)
    - Change energy management setting to high performance (only works on graphics cards in Macbook 15" and 17").
From reading these forums it appears that this is a well-know bug. Has anyone else got any suggestions to fix this? And why hasn't Apple fixed this yet after so many people bringing it to their attention? It's clearly a bug that wasn't in Leopard.

I'M FED UP WITH APPLE! They've always been a little shady, but the last half of 2010 took the cake!
First it was the iPhone 3g "upgrade" to IOS4 which was garbage and killed my ability to use the 3g until I figured out how to crack the software, wipe the thing clear then reinstall the original software. Next up was purchasing the iphone 4 as a Christmas gift for someone running tiger on their mac, only to find out that the iphone 4 doesn't work on tiger when they tried to sync their contacts - and then having to rush out and purchase snow leopard so that they could enjoy my gift. Then I install Snow Leopard (note - I purchased the family pack) onto my own leopard-running(10.5.+) powerbook only to have the external LCD display I've been using for years suddenly stop working.
Oh, okay, to be fair, it works IF I RESIGN MYSELF TO SET it to "mirror image" (which defeats the purpose of having multiple displays) and drop the resolution down to a pathetic, unsharp, nearly distored setting that is almost painful to look at knowing that this monitor was just A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO showing me crystal clear images.
Then I exhaust myself trying to find a fix only to discover that APPLE in their infinite brilliance (AKA - their torture of loyal customers) knows of the issue - worked it out - then created an update that created the issue all over again. I'm so done! No more macs. I'm going back to the evil land of PCs. At least there, you know you're getting crap, it doesn't sneak up on you after getting you to trust it time and time again.

  • Mac OS 10.4.3 Sleep, Powerbook G4, Airport, External Display Problems

I am running Mac OS 10.4.3 on my G4 Powerbook, system spec as follows
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,6
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f1
    Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXX
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
    Version: 1.0
When the Powerbook is woken from sleep mode the airport crashes when using an external display. I have no idea why this is, but it seems from other threads, that the external display and airport are closely tied together, and I have also read that there are others who are experiencing some problems with the Airport. When this happens, I have to hard boot the machine as I can't forcequit or shut down the system from the menubar (this crashes too)
I have the following installed for my airport
    2005-07-27 22:23:42 +1000: Installed "AirPort" (4.2
    2005-11-12 12:00:12 +1100: Installed "AirPort Update 2005-001" (1.0)

Wireless Card Firmware Version: 404.2 (3.90.34.0.p16)
I am using an Apple 23" Cinema HD Display with the Apple ADC-DVI converter(previous model)
Can anyone help me with this problem?
    Thanks

I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

  • External display problem after 10.8.3 upgrade

After applying 10.8.3 Combo Updater, the external display would not wake up after the computer resume from sleep.
Mac: MBP Retina 13" Late 2012
    Display: Acer S230HL
    Connection: DisplayPort - DVI cable
    Please fix it Apple!

I have used an Acer S230Hl on three Makbook Pros via the VGA wire and a thunderbolt adapter. No problems at all with 10.6, 10.7. Worked perfectly.
With 10.8 the display would not wake up from sleep, most of the time. I found an annoying work around that helped maybe 70-80% of the time: unplug the VGA+adapter monitor feed, and then go to system preferences>>displays>>Color>>open the S230HL profile and then simply plug the monitor back in. I also delayed the sleep feature for 2 hours to prevent the problem, but it happens most of the tiem when I close the lid or put the machine to sleep manually.
Now with Maverick (10.9), even this elaborate this trick does not work. Why the loss in compatability Apple? I've called applecare twice and the techs have not been able to help--and now are not responding or calling me back. Having to reboot my mac 3-4x a day is a major problem. Anyone have ideas for me?

  • MacBook Air - windows 7 / Bootcamp - External Display NOT WORKING

I run Windows 7 (Bootcamp) on a 9/2011 MacBook Air, how can I run an external display? Settings only give single display option there seems to be no way to either just display on an external display or to extend to an external display. Is this a bug?

You also may want to post in the Boot Camp forum, there may be some MBA users that can help you.

  • MacBook external display problem with Panasonic projector

MacBook (September 2006, Intel 945) with Boot Camp and XP Pro won't display externally from Boot Camp to a Panasonic PT-DW5000U projector using VGA (via the MiniDVI-to-VGA adapter/dongle). I tried 640x480x8-bit and 800x600x16-bit and 1024x768x16-bit. I tried unplugging and replugging the adapter. I tried shutting down and restarting into Win XP while all video cabling was connected. I tried pressing F7, Fn+F7, Shift+F7, FnShiftF7, as well as other key combinations involving F7. I tried checking the checkbox called "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor." I installed Apple Software Update 2.1. None of these troubleshooting attempts worked. It works fine in OS X to the same projector (using the same VGA dongle). And, while Win XP starts in Boot Camp, the projector displays the Windows XP startup screen (black background and blue progress indicator), but after about a minute that disappears, I get a login dialog on the laptop screen, and the projector then displays only a blank blue screen.
Other displays: It works fine with Boot Camp to a Samsung SyncMaster 940T monitor using DVI (via the MiniDVI-to-DVI adapter/dongle). It works fine with Boot Camp to a Panasonic LC50 monitor using VGA (via the MiniDVI-to-VGA adapter/dongle).
We also have Panasonic PT-D5500 projectors, but I haven't tried them yet.
    1. Is this a problem in the Intel drivers supplied with Boot Camp?
    2. Are there settings on the projector that need to be set to make it work?
    3. I'm also now missing the Intel system tray icon that looks like a slanted computer screen -- how do I get it back?
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Based on the substantial research I've done regarding this issue, here's what the problem could be (without me knowing more):
If your working with an integrated graphics card (Intel 945?), chances are that it doesn't support the "resolution" of the projector - which is information embedded in to your other devices. Furthermore, the "refresh rate" is another piece of information usually "embedded" in to the device your connecting to, and the projector may not have either piece of information accessible to your card, or, vice versa.
Additionally, the drivers required by XP to make it all happen while using your particular video card, may not be installed. Basically, it could be a driver issue as well.
I wish I had a solution for you, however, everything I've read seems to conclude that XP within boot camp has little or no support for external displays (especially when talking about larger resolutions).
Humorously, when I addressed the "Mac Genius" at the Apple Store regarding this question, he told me to go buy a PC - so I did. Already have a Mac Pro, needed a laptop...

  • Ibook - External Display problem

    Hi,
I have ibook G3 running on Mac OS 10.1.3
Its screen starts flickering and hence I connected new external monitor using VGA adopter.
It worked fine for a month. Now I am facing a strange problem... red colour is missing from external monitor.
ibook display though it is flickering, shows red colour
Monitor is new and I don’t think it is monitor problem.
    Any idea what's happening!!
    Regards,

Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting the external display?
    Yes. However, no change...
Have you tried restarting the computer?
    Yes. However, no change...
Have you tried calibrating the monitor?
    Yes. However, no change...
It could be that you need a new display adapter
    Let me try this...
    Thanks and Regards,

I've bought an IPS 24" AOC full HD LED display, and i've pluged it on with HDMI to my Mac... it's great, but sometimes when i use apps in full screen the upper sidebar won't dissapeare, it stay's but it does not work... it's just a grey stripe at the top of the screen... is only like that when i use my monitor with external mode... when i mirror my display it work's fine...
Does enyone else had such a problem?
    Thanx: Bolha

    Hey mz3t,
    Welcome to the forums !
Try to back up and complete a clean reload of the device software as shown here http://bbry.lv/cG8oer. Before you restore your data test to see if you are able to see the clock on the external display.

  • External Display Problem w/10.6.5

Hi, all. I'm having an odd external display issue that I can't figure out how to solve. I teach a class using my MBP, and as such have to plug it into the (VGA) projector in the classroom. Up until last week or so this worked perfectly. Now, when I plug the VGA adapter into the Mini DisplayPort, the screen flashes (as though it's detecting an external monitor), but it fails to detect the external monitor. However - and this is the odd part - if I reboot with the cable connected to the Mini DisplayPort, the external monitor is correctly detected at startup.
I tried logging out and connecting it with nobody logged in to the machine, and that didn't work; it's only on a fresh reboot that it will "see" the external display.
The only thing that I can think of that has changed is the 10.6.5 update. It seems fairly clear that my adapter still works fine, as it works correctly at startup... Anybody have any suggestions?

I've experienced the same problems. I have been using my MBP with the same LCD projectors and same mini DVI to VGA adapter for more than a year without experiencing any issues. After the 10.6.5 update, my screen flashes after connecting my MBP to the LCD projectors but the the resolution does not change and no input is detected by the projectors. Even after manually adjusting the resolution the projectors detect no input.
I have recently found one projector that works with my updated MBP. After connecting the Optoma TS350 DLP Projection Display to my MBP the resolution changes to 800 x 600 (stretched) as expected followed by the input being detected and displayed normally.
Like some of you, I am also a teacher working regularly with LCD projectors in the classroom. This recent issue has been quite frustrating. My school was considering creating a Mac computer lab but after witnessing the recent problems interfacing their current technology with updated Macs they have now opted for a Linux lab instead.
I hope Apple resolves this problem quickly. Their incentives for educators and students are somewhat worthless if we can't use Macs in our schools.

  • External Display Problem - Frequency out of range with lid closed

I have read this - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286 - it should work, but it does not.
I have a black macbook, an apple usb keyboard, a usb mouse and a19" gateway lcd display (max resolution 1440x900). Everything used to work great. Now for some reason no matter what resolution & mhz I set the external display and the macbook to it will not work with the lid closed, I can set bot to the lowest settings (640 x 480) and when I close the lid and wake the mac the message on the external display says "Frequency out of range." I will work fin in either mirror or extended mode with the lid open. Any suggestions? I've tried resetting the pram already and run the disk repair on the start up disk.

I never did figure it out - but the problem has been solved..
I did tried to trash a bunch of preference files - no joy.
I fixed it the old fashioned way - I installed a fresh system (don't waste your time with an archive and install - it just imported the corrupt files). Works fine now..

  • IMac as an external display, problem with trackpad/mouse pairing

    Hi,
I am trying to use the imac as an external display for a macbook air, which is well supported/advertised by apple.
I can toggle the display easily between the imac and the macookair, the problem I’m having is that I only have one wireless keyboard and one wireless trackpad. As I toggle the display, the paring/unpairing of both trackpad and mouse is a real hastle becuase I have to manually go into bluetooth preferences and adjust the settings for both devices.
Anyone using the imac as external display with an idea/suggestion how to make this process more friendly?
Thank in advance for any help.

I don't think you can.  Wish I had better news.  Target display mode for non-thunderbolt 27" Imacs worked OK.  I have done it myself on a late 2009 iMac.  The new iMacs can only go into target display mode when connected thunderbolt to thunderbolt.  So a new macbook or macbook air can do the trick but your dell can't.  What you can do is remote desktop or VNC to the dell.  Now your dell screen will show up but in a smaller window.
