Bootcamp fails to create windows 7 startup disk

Bootcamp version 5, running on Mountain Lion, keeps failing on creating the Windows 7 Startup disk. I'm using a 8gb USB drive and it formats it without any problems. The process will carry on until around 50% of copying installation files and then fails.
I've tried 2 different USB Flash drives and I've check the ISO image for Windows 7.
Can anyone help me with a solution? Or why this is happening.
Thanks

  • Create a startup disk on a thumb drive

Trying to create a startup disk on a thumb drive to diagnose my wife's hard drive which I think is failing (another problem I won't go into here). We are on the road and the only thumb drive I have is 4 gb. But when I try to create a startup disk for it using the Mac OS X operating CD, it says it's not big enough. But I'm guessing it wants to install all of OS X and I just want to install the essential files necessary for a startup disk which I'm assuming would easily fit on my thumb drive.
Is this doable? If so how? Or is there a way to do this using Disk Utility? I tried that, but couldn't figure out how. Also, we have an iPod that has plenty of space, but from what I can tell, I would have to erase it and we can't do that.
Bottom line: is there any way we can create a startup drive from an iPod that we don't want to erase or a 4gb thumb drive? thanks.

    Jolly Giant -
Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, neither seem to solve my issue assuming I'm looking at it right.
I ran across the first link previously and gave it a try. In step 9 it says to select the volume (the USB Drive) and continue the OS X installation. Unfortunately, when I select the USB thumb drive volume, it says it can't install because the volume (USB thumb drive) is not big enough. Mine is 4gb. That's my real issue. I need to install just the OS X files that are necessary to boot a Mac from a USB drive, but all the instructions I've run across apparently are designed to only install a full version of OS X and my 4 gb drive is too small for that.
Your second link, which is also a link from the first link, apparently explains how to do this installation on a smaller thumb drive like mine. But when I click on the link, it comes up as a dead link for me.

  • HT3986 can bootcamp be used with Windows install disk on an external drive (internal is broken) ?

can bootcamp be used with Windows install disk on an external drive (internal is broken) ?

With Boot Camp, you must install Windows onto in internal HDD (or SSD).  If you are referring that your internal Optical drive is broken, you might be able to install Windows from an external drive, but you might not.  I have heard varying levels of success with that.  I'm not sure what the official stance is, but I do know that if youe machine shipped with an internal optical drive, then you must use that to install Windows using Boot Camp and not swap it out for a "data doubler" and try to install from an external optical drive.

  • Bootcamp 5 + 3TB HD: The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume

    Hi all,
I installed a brand new 3TB Seagate Barracuda HD in my iMac late 2009 after read that apple provides a patch to use 3TB discs with bootcamp with 10.8.3.
I tried to install windows in my 3TB disc 4 o 5 times, reinstalling from scratch, formatting the disc from terminal, etc... I tried everything and I keep getting the same message: The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.
The disc has a single 3TB Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition, but bootcamp keep saying that is not... and doesn't allows me to install windows. I read a lot of discussions here and other communities but as I said, none solution worked for me.
Any of you could manage to fix this issue?? Is Apple aware of that problem?
    Any idea will be welcome!
    Ivan

    Hi,
Anybody in the forum have managed to use bootcamp with a 3Tb disc?? or get any answer from Apple...
    Regards,
    Ivan

  • BOOTCAMP fails to install Windows XP SP2

I ran the assistant, partitioned ok, but running the Windows XP disk that used to work with the public beta versions of bootcamp fails to install after rebooting: [in windows style] "disk error...press any key to restart" All I can do is shut down the mac and reboot in Mac OS.
    Anyone?

Not to sound stuffy - but you would do better posting this in the BootCamp forum.
It's not an unusual problem and others have posted ways to fix it.

  • Bootcamp not showing up on startup disk after upgrading to Yosemite. :(

So after i've upgrade my macbook to Yosemite, bootcamp window won't show up when i hold on to 'alt' key during the start up. The bootcamp window also doesn't shows up in the startup disk in system preferences. Tried removing windows 7 and re-install again but it still doesn't work. So Please help me fix this

    1. How was Windows 'removed'?
    2. Please post the output of the following commands using Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal. Enter your password when prompted.
         a. diskutil list
         b. diskutil cs list
         c. sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
         d. sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

  • Windows startup disk not showing up after the boot camp is done partitioning.

OK, Boot Camp finished making a partition for windows on my SSD (I gave it 30GB), and it restarded my computer. I pressed the alt key so i could chosse the windows drive so i could begin the installation, BUT the option to open the windows drive was not there! The only otions I had was to startup from Mac OSX, Recovery Disk and a USB Flash drive Named Windows(I tried it previously but it didnt work because it didnt detect my mouse or keyboard). I the booted up from mac so i could make sure that the partition was created and it was. When i went on startup disk preferences on System Preferences the computer couldent detect a Boot Camp drive only the main Macintosh HD. What am I supposed to do?
    I am using a Macbook Pro late 2013 13"
(excuse my English as it is not my first language)
EDIT: I do not have NTFS 3G or a similar program installed.

    a few things
what is your exact model mac? which windows are you trying to install?
i'm a fan of small windows partitions, but 30gb is too small unless you're absolutely sure that you will not use any major data consuming apps like music, video or gaming. also, you will HAVE to disable hibernation and the pagefile (google). the smallest we run is 35gb with 40gb being much better
does your mac have an internal optical drive? if so, you need to burn your windows iso onto a physical disc unless the newer 2013 macs let you usb install, which would be news to me
use only a usb2 flash drive

  • Windows Startup disk disappeared!

I installed Bootcamp successfully last year and have run it quite satisfactorily since then. I hadn't used it for a few months but when I tried to switch from OSX to Windows this week (rebooting holding the Option key) there was no start up disk for Windows. Going into System Preferences, only the OSX and 'from start-up disk' options were listed. So, there's not trace of Windows having been installed.
Although I'd rather not reinstall, I'm unable to because I get an error message about the partition when I launch Boot Camp Assistant.
I've used the Disk Utility to repair but that has made no difference.
    Any suggestions?

H Nerowolf and thanks so far,
    1. Never had the Windows disk icon on the desk top but it appeared always when I selected
"Start Up Disk" from System Preferences. It no longer appears here.
    2. The error message reads: +The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.+.
    3. No, no A/V programme running in Windows. The only application I installed on the Windows partition was a business accounting package called 'Cash Flow Manager'.
    4. Running the command in Terminal results in:
    +Son-of-Dome-Head-2:~ Al$ ls /volumes+
    +Macintosh HD Skype 1 baystongroup+
    +Skype Time Machine Backups iDisk+
    +Son-of-Dome-Head-2:~ Al$+
Doesn't look like a Windows partition to me....
My objective is (firstly) to recover a data file (which was only 80% backed up) and (secondly) to restore the Windows XP.
Grateful for any further assistance you can offer.
    Regards,
    A.

  • No Windows startup disk in Mac OS X

Today I installed Windows 7 pro 64 with Bootcamp on My macbookPro 13 and everything works, except. .
When in Windows I can open Bootcamp configuration, choose Mac OS disk as startup disk and then restart.
When in Mac OS there is no Windows disk in configuration, just Mac HD and Network startup.
Pressing the option key during startup presents 2 disk icons and I can happily choose between Mac and Win.
How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks
    Rik.

So does this mean there is no fix for this? I have the exact same problem, it is very annoying. I didn't (knowingly) install any third part NTFS driver.
    - If I uninstall that driver, will the problem go away?
    - It is annoying trying to set up Parallels Desktop, too, because it can't see the Win bootcamp partition either.
I don't see this topic as solved, or rather the solution hasn't solved the problem - it just makes you work around it.

  • No Windows startup disk - only Mac

HI, I installed Windows XP SP2 hassle free a day or two ago. the first time i tried to choose a startup disk during startup (holding down 'option' key) the windows disk was there.
the next time it was not.
from looking around i found the 'rEFIt' download and installed it, shut down rather than restart like they say but still no windows disk.
i am able to startup using system preferences and choosing it etc. but it would be a lot easier to do it during startup.
    thanks
    Andrew
oh and i did change the name of the windows partition to WINDOWS HD instead of unknown - if it has anything to do with that.

just started it up and tried holding down 'option' and it decided to work.

  • Bootcamp won't read windows installer disk

hey guys, I have a macbook pro, I just downloaded windows 7 from microsoft, I burned a dvd with the files and I partitioned my disk, but i can't install the windows because bootcamp won't read the disk. I get  the following message: the installer disk cannot be found. Insert your windows installer disk and wait a few minutes ti be recognized...
    What is wrong?

If it's an .iso, you need to open it in Disk Utility, then burn it from there. If you just put a bunch of files onto optical media, then it won't boot. You need to use something like Roxio Toast to burn a bootable disk from files. It knows what needs to be added and how the files should be arranged.
I've found that with Windows stuff, I'm better off using a Windows utilitiy that understands Windows booting. I use CDBurner XP. It works great and is free.

  • Error window: Startup disk

I'm getting an error message stating: Startup Disk is Almost Full, please delte files.
It's the first time I'm getting this. Any ideas?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi ods,
    Welcome to the forum.
It means exactly what it says - you hard disk is getting full. To get rid of the message you will need to remove files from the hd. If you have an external hd you can transfer the files there, alternatively you can burn them to CD-R media. Once transfered (backed up) you can then delete the files from the internal hd thus freeing up space.

  • How to Create Windows Boot Disk in VirtualBox VM Machine?

    Hi,
Everytime I start the VirtualBox VM machine, I'm ask to load the disk for the Windows 8.1 x64. Is it possible to load this bootable disk onto my virtual machine so that I don't have to attach the external drive, insert the disk and wait for the scan to complete before I can actually start the VM machine?
I would appreciate if someone can provide me with the steps, assume I don't have any clue on what I am doing, to load this bootable disk.
    Thanks in advance.
    Marlon

    It's so easy!
Reference: Oracle VM Virtual Box User Manual (Pg 61)
4.2 Installing and Maintaining Guest Additions
    4.2.1 Guest Additions for Windows
    4.2.1.1 Installation
In the “Devices” menu in the virtual machine’s menu bar, VirtualBox has a handy menu item named “Insert Guest Additions CD image”, which mounts the Guest Additions ISO file inside your virtual machine. A Windows guest should then automatically start the Guest Additions installer, which installs the Guest Additions into your Windows guest. Other guest operating systems (or if automatic start of software on CD is disabled) need manual start of the installer.

  • Create a startup disk

I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch purchased in 2010. Currently I am running Yosemite on it.  I want to sell it so I need to wipe and reformat the drive.  I have backed my data already.  I moved 3 times since the original purchase and I have no idea where the original disks are.  Do I have to reformat with the original OS (and I have no idea what it was) or is there some way that I can make a start-up disk with Yosemite and use that to reformat?
    Any help is appreciated.

You need to use the computer’s original disks or a retail disk newer than that Mac. Anything which you might make from the Yosemite system is tied to your Apple ID.

  • Can I create a Bootcamp partition without installing Windows immediately?

I have a clone of my bootcamp that contains Windows 7, but can't restore to the Clone without a Bootcamp partition.
    I am running Lion.
Is there anyway to create the bootcamp partition without the Windows Install Disk?...if so, I could just restore my Cloned Bootcamp onto the Bootcamp Parition.
    Thank you,
    AK

Wait...after I hit send, I realized you had cloned your boot camp parition with winclone.  My bad...well, you can always try putting the cloned partition on the exFAT partition, if possible.  I think what I had to do when I bought a new hard drive was to boot into the old had drive.  I then attached the new drive with a handy universal drive kit (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NVSPATA/).  I think I used iPartition to create an NTFS partition on my new drive. I then copied my cloned Windows partition onto the new drive.
