Bootcamp install instruction missing something

...or something is not right. i create the bootcamp partition. insert the xp pro sp2 disk, boot to that. it checks and loads "stuff". the first screen is accurate per the instructions. i select the proper partition, then i am never presented with the format screen options, to prevent the dreaded boot error after an {improper} installation...is my media fubar? what's going on?
i have also not had any luck trying to experiment with win7.
instructions are remiss without addendums in regards to common errors

Rodrigo,
There is a tool available known as the VISA Driver Wizard that allows your USB device to use VISA commands to communicate with LabVIEW. The wizard can be located at Start >> All Programs >> National Instruments >> VISA >> Driver Wizard. Here you will able to select the type of Hardware Bus (USB). If your device is unable to accept the VISA commands that the wizard helps build then another alternative is to use USB RAW to communicate with the device. USB RAW is a very low level communication protocol. See the attached links to gain more knowledgeif this is a route you could consider.

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

2011 MacBook Pro, 64 bit i7 quad core, upgraded to Lion OSx, Bootcamp installed with Windows 7, wanting to install Windows 8 (don't ask), tried downloading/installing bootcamp 5.0.5033 (both on the mac/windows partitions (actually using a parallel to run Windows)), error message something similar to bootcamp doesn't support this Windows
So the question is am I doing something wrong? Should I just try and install windows 8 through my windows 7 partition and see if I can use the bootcamp 5.05033. Or do I solely have to use the bootcamp to install Windows 8? I'm not too familiar with bootcamp and how it runs.

if you're using parallels and full bootcamp then you're making it 100% more troublesome for youself then it needs to be
bootcamp is running windows directly on the hardware this give full memory and cpu and 3d video game power
running windows in parallels is running a virtual machine where one can't run powerful games and the like but one can have it in a window and change fast between osx and windows
parallels as the only virutal machine (as far as I know) support not have the operating system as a file on the osx harddisk but can access a bootcamp parition as virtual machine but without the benefits bootcamps provides
it's a service parallels provide for those who want both to play games in normal bootcamp and sometimes use windows in a virutal machine
just install it like a normal virtual machine and you need not worry about bootcamp drivers and the likes
plus it would mean that the windows part would be a part of the timemachine bacup of osx
which it is not when it's in bootcamp

Is your Time Capsule being used for your TimeMachine back up? Or is it simply being used as an external hard drive?

  • Snow leopard install DVD mystery: Am I missing something?

Okay, I have a brand new iMac, three days in my ownership. After installing software via DVDs and downloads, resolving a few issues, etc, I'm getting an error message - a minor item doesn't load. I run Disk Utility, which points me to a repair that has to be conducted by booting off the Install 1 dsik. No big deal. So I boot off my 10.6.2 Install 1 disk which came with the computer, and all it gives me is a Hardware Test. No option to boot off the DVD. I run the Hardware test anyway, and it still gives me no option to Boot off the DVD. I repeat this with Install Disk 2 and get the Hardware Test again. Same deal.
If I start normally off the hard drive with Install Disk 1 in the superdrive, I get the correct install display, but that's not booting off the disk itself.
Am I missing something, doing some wrong, or do I have a bad Install Disk?

    Hi K.T
The problem on the Install Disk 1 is that it doesn't give me access to anything but the Hardware Test. It doesn't let me get as far as DU or the OS Install screens. It just gives me the choice to run the Hardware Test, or to Shutdown or Restart.
Of all the Macs I have owned, this is the first Install Disk that doesn't give me a choice between accessing the HD or (re)Installing the O, or running DU.

  • Missing something obvious

I am using nigpib version 6 with RedHat Linux 6.2. I am having problems talking to my instruments. Two devices a Keithley Multimeter 2001 and an IO TECH dac488hr refuse to communicate. Their remote lights go on but I get an EBUS error when doing ibwrt to either. Two other devices an SRS850 lockin amplifier, and an ESI model 73 precision transformer respond to commands well enough but I get an EAB0 error returned. I recognize the problems have to do with timeout. I have changed ibtmo to various settings but continue to get errors. I have tried to be careful setting the EOS and EOI attributes for each device but clearly I am missing something. Any suggestions?
In the past I used the LLP gpib driver and don't recall gett
ing these kinds of problems. I was going to port over my old code to talk with the instruments but I see that there is some rather sigificant differences in the way you do business. For one under LLP Clausi set up a /dev/gpib0/master device through which commands were passed. In addition he had a /etc/gpib.conf file and loaded his module via insmod in rc.d. You, on the other hand, set up /dev/gpib, /dev/gpib0, /dev/gpib1/, /dev/gpib2, /dev/gpib3, /dev/gpibdebug and /dev/dev0 /dev/dev1 etc (where dev# is a device configured with ibconf). What are the relationships between your strategies? What must I do to port my old software to my newer linux OS and use your drivers rather than those from LLP?
I could really use some insights. Any comments (sans flaming ;-) would be welcome.

I tried this but with no success. I called the help line and spoke with Ben P. and Armando V. they walked me through the ibic and ibconf tools, again, with no success.
I spoke with the vendors of the instruments which are giving the EBUS error. They walked me through the setups (especially wrt to EOS and EOI). They were confused as to why the instruments failed to respond.
With my last call to NI (SR#345883) the engineers suggested that I respond to this email and ask for further support. They requested/suggested I supply the following 3 pieces of information:
    1) revision of boards and part nos.
    2 ATGPIB-TNT boards vintage 1993
    assy 181830-01 REV. D
    1 ATGPIB-TNT PNP vintage 1995
    assy 182885E-01
The implication was that NI might be able to provide an upgrade to the firmware if that was at fault.
    2) Capture of errors in ibic
basically following your webpage for ibic works upto communicating with devices. Sample output follows:
    : ibfind gpib0
    id = 0
    gpib0: ibpad 0
    [0100] ( cmpl )
    previous value: 0
    gpib0: ibfind keithley
    id = 1002
    keithley: ibwrt "*IDN?\xA"
    [8100] ( err cmpl )
    <>
    error: EBUS
    count: 0
    keithley: ibrd 100
    [8100] ( err cmpl )
    error: EBUS
    count: 0
    <>
    keithley: ibfind ratio
    id = 1003
    ratio: ibwrt "Ratio 0.1234567\xA"
    [c100] ( err timo cmpl )
    error: EAB0
    count: 16
    <
the ratio, as verified by the display >>
    ratio: ibrd 100
[e100] (err timo end cmpl )
    error: EAB0
    count: 17
    52 61 74 69 6f 20 30 2e Ratio 0.
    31 32 33 34 35 36 37 30 12345670
    0a .
using the SRS850 Lockin Amplifier has an added advantage. It will show the input and output queues on the screen. When I command this instrument I can watch as it receives its instructions. The commands are going through correctly (NOTE: this device also gives an EAB0 error).
I have tried different cables, different machines, different DMA settings, different interrupts, different instruments, different ibtmo values, different cards, single devices on short cables, but keep getting errors.
I have used the ibic webpage (setting ibsre 1, etc) and these work fine but the devices still complain.
    3) Give the version of Linux I am using...
We are running Redhat 6.2, kernel version 2.2. We have older versions of the Linux OS which are running the LLP gpib driver for the SAME devices and it works fine. I would rather not go back to older versions if possible, besides since NI has done the Linux gpib driver, it appears that LLP has dropped support. In particular, I cannot get their drivers to compile in Redhat 6.2 and get no response from my emails. I would be willing to move to newer versions of Linux if that would solve the problem.
    I have confirmed the following:
The ibtsta program says the driver is installed correctly (run without the gpib cable attached.)
Interrupts, dma, iports are unique and without contention.
The gpib card responds to commands (eg using ibic.)
Some devices respond in a fashion, others fail. But all seem to receive signals from the computer.
The instruments and cables attached to the system are sound.
The gpib card, cables, and devices respond correctly from a dual boot machine running WinNT and Linux (i.e. no movement of cables, devices, or cards). On the WinNT side the recently downloaded NI drivers work and I can communicate (with the Keithley 2001) flawlessly.
I am must now ask whether the driver is at fault. I understand the drivers are beta, but these appear to be the only workable drivers out there. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

  • I feel like I really missed something somewhere...

So I was watching Family Guy last night using Xine (I like menus), and I noticed that the quality was really bad, so I cranked up the deinterlacing, and once my CPU topped 100%, the quality was "acceptable".
But then I was cooking, so the menus annoyed me (it doesn't have a play all button), so I used mplayer with this command: "for i in `seq 2 9`; do mplayer dvd://${i} -dvd-device /dev/hdc -vo xv; done", and the picture quality was perfect (note the lack of any deinterlace filters).
So I wondered why Xine was giving me such crap quality, and I noticed that "Video Device" was set to "Auto" (which I always thought meant it picked xv over all of the others), but I changed it to "xv", and now I get the same quality as mplayer without any deinterlacing.
Now, I swear a few years ago when I was fiddling with that kinda thing, I had to use deinterlacers with "xv" to get the same quality as I get now (using just xv alone).  So, does xv now use my graphics cards onboard MPEG-2 decoding, or does xv have it's own deinterlacer, or does something else happen?  I really feel like I missed something somewhere...

  • Am I missing something with upgrades?

I got your recent newsletter with the "speedometer", which showed I was using an older/slower version of Firefox -- plus there was that annoying black pop-up. I went ahead and upgraded as per instructions. Everything seemed to work fine. But when I went back to check, the "speedometer" showed I was still using the older/slower Firefox and the pop-up popped up again. So I upgraded a second time. Again everything went smoothly. But when I went back to the "speedometer" it showed I was still using the same older/slower Firefox. Am I missing something?

    Hey --
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly on this. Turns out I had downloaded but not installed. Clicked on download, wizard appeared, installation a breeze after that.
And, of course, the new Firefox is nice and fast. (I also double-checked speedometer and it's really in.)
Thanks again, all the best in 2012, more to come as things develop --

  • Bootcamp Install Nightmare

I attempted to install Win 7 through bootcamp on a 2012 macbook air. Everything went fine until the machine rebooted, first with a blinking curser and then a black screen. Nothing happened for about 1/2 hr. I aborted the install, and the machine wouldn't boot anymore, displaying a very Windows looking "can't find boot partition" message. I could boot by pressing option at startup, but I had a backup so I am rebuilding the OSX install to get the machine back to where it was when I started the boot camp install. Any advice before my next try? Did I miss something? Should I have waited longer before pulling the plug?

I'm curious, when you booted with the option key, what partitions were available?
That is to say, normally with a Windows-using computer you'd expect either 3 or 2 drives depending on how your computer came:
Option 1: A Mac OS X partition, a Windows partition, and a Recovery partition
Option 2: The first two without a Recovery partition because it relies on Network Recovery.
The description you gave of cursor + black screen sounds to me like install was unsuccessful but it still defaulted to booting to the Windows side, which would lead you to exactly nothing, as described. However, a description of what came up after option-booting would clear some things up.
I believe you're doing this correctly, however. Close the partition meant for Windows, restoring to one single partition. Ideally, once you've made the partition again and installed (I'm assuming from a Windows .iso) it should succeed if all the steps are followed.
Alternatively, if it fails again despite essentially restarting the whole process, then your installer might be messed up, in which case you'll want a new one. If you're getting it from the Microsoft site then a redownload of the .iso should be a simple matter, and at that point I wouldn't expect any further problem. If you want to be abundantly cautious, getting a new installer for this second try should ensure a problem-free install.

  • FRUSTRATED:Simple Tasks - Am I missing something or does iTunes fall short?

So last night I became VERY frustrated because I attempted the SIMPLE TASK OF COPYING MP3 files to a flash card and ran into SEVERAL snags...
I wanted to copy just my MP3 files (not AAC) and ran into the following snags:
    1) I COULD NOT FIND ANY WAY to burn songs or play list to ANYTHING other than CDs and I had way more data to transfer than would fit on a CD. Isn't there ANY WAY to copy songs to a flash drive?
    2) I couldn't find a way to select Full Album from the album list. I just wanted to view "Album View" as to choose from artists and pick an ENTIRE album skip a few pick a few more ENTIRE ALBUMS, skip a few, etc. I could not find a way to select an ENTIRE album from the Album List without selecting EACH song INDIVIDUALLY. It IS the ALBUM LIST chy can't you select an entire ALBUM? Am I missing something?
    3) Then when I tediously selected about 40 albums (song by tedious song) it wouldn't copy them over. Apparently it was too much data to handle. So I had to reselect albums in groups of 10 (song by tedious song). Is it true iTunes can't handle more than a few MB of data at a time?
    4) After this tedious FLASH card backup I synced my iPod and low and behold I couldn't sort by GROUP which is how I classified all my music since A) every time I set a custom GENRE and tags, it would default back to the often WRONG GENREs that Apple had assigned after "GETTING TRACK INFO or ALBUM ARTWORK." Isn't there any way to sort by GROUPS on the iPod? Is there any way to assign CUSTOM GENRES and not have them go back to the default and often wrong default settings that iTunes assigned?
i think those were ALL SIMPLE TASKS that iTunes SHOULD have been able to accomplish quite easily. But apparently not! If I am missing something, please enlighten me.
    Bonus questions...
Why does iTunes break up some albums into a few songs at a time and not others? I can't get them back together unless I select COMPILATION, which it might not necessarily qualify as?
Half of my CDs I copied over to iTunes sound great on the computer but tinny and play through the right speaker only. What settings should I use, because the default ones don't sound good.
Why does iTunes keep CONSTANTLY interrupting/stalling my computing when it is just copying CDs. I thought the whole point of selecting COPY CD and EJECT in the preferences was to eliminate this. [I'm running on a brand new MacBook Pro with MAXIMUM memory available]
The icing on the cake is that I couldn't finay ANY MANUALS for iTunes on the APPLE.COM site and only incredibly rudimentary video tutorials that cover little. I also have the official Apple book on iTunes whih doesn't cover ANY of these topics
Finally , are there any good alternatives to iTunes as a database and e-jukebox?
THANKS to ANYONE who took the time to read this FRUSTRATING VERBOSE NOTE.

    1) I COULD NOT FIND ANY WAY to burn songs or play list to ANYTHING other than CDs and I had way more data to transfer than would fit on a CD. Isn't there ANY WAY to copy songs to a flash drive?
Just find the tracks in iTunes, mount the flash drive, and drag the tracks from the iTunes window to the flash drive. Or find them in the iTunes Music folder and drag them to the flash drive.
Turn on the Browser view; View menu -> Show Browser. The you can just click on an artist and then click on the album.
Why does iTunes break up some albums into a few songs at a time and not others? I can't get them back together unless I select COMPILATION, which it might not necessarily qualify as?
Make sure that the album titles are exactly the same. Even an extra space will make it a separate album to iTunes.
The icing on the cake is that I couldn't finay ANY MANUALS for iTunes on the APPLE.COM site and only incredibly rudimentary video tutorials that cover little. I also have the official Apple book on iTunes whih doesn't cover ANY of these topics.
Tried the iTunes Help? You might also find these helpful:

There are also a number of third-party books on iTunes if you want it all on one place precompiled.

    Hi Sonia,
While transferring Adobe from laptop to PC the licensing files got corrupt and the right way to use Adobe Applications is to install first as transferring from a different machine can give you problems.
You can try steps from this article if that helps otherwise you have to reinstall and manually delete some files , everything is mentioned.
