BootCamp on a double partitioned drive

So the hard drive in my MBP is partitioned into two separate partitions. One for OS X and the other for all my data. I want to install XP for some games and so I would like to use bootcamp to do so. My question is, is the drive that bootcamp will partition limited to the one with OS X already on it? Or can I use it on my other partition that has all my data.
And second, should I want to revert back and delete the windows partition, will everything go back to the way it was? Or will I have to format and re-partition anything.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
the BootCamp Assistant (BCA) in OSX will only partition the harddrive when it is a single OSX volume with only one partition on it.
With your harddisk layout the BCA won't do anything.
Nonetheless, have a look here for ways to do what you have in mind http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071101065229169
When using the BootCamp Assistant for the partitioning, you can use it again later for completely removing the WIndows partition and assigning the diskspace back to OSX.
When using the other solutions you have to do that on your own with Disk Utility.

  • BOOTCAMP on a multiple-partition drive

    Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to use BOOTCAMP with already partioned harddrive. I have to partitions(both Mac OS Extended-Journaled) one with Mac OS installed, another for keeping some data. Bootcamp Assistant returns error since it works only with single partition. Is it possible to install Win7 64-bit without creating single partition first?
Thanks in advance for any help.

No. Boot Camp will only work on a single volume drive with OS X installed. You might look at rEFIt as an alternative bootloader that will allow what you want to do. Simply install Windows on a partition, then install rEFIt - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • Can I force the bootcamp wizard to skip looking for the bootcamp drivers?  I have already downloaded the latest drivers and loaded them on a FAT usb drive.  All I want is for bootcamp to create the partition and allow me to install windows 8 pro

    Hi Everyone,
Can I force the bootcamp wizard to skip looking for the bootcamp drivers?  I have already downloaded the latest drivers and loaded them on a FAT usb drive.  All I want is for bootcamp to create the partition and allow me to install windows 8 pro.
The bootcamp drivers have been downloaded from apple's website.  Filename:  BootCamp5.0.5033
    I have a iMac 27" late 2013 model.
NOTE:  I have downloaded the drivers manually from apples support site as the bootcamp wizard fails third of the way through the download.
    Appreciate any assistance.
    Regards,

There is a missing point in this thread, and it is that the Boot Camp drivers for the Late 2013 iMac can only be downloaded from Boot Camp Assistant. The Boot Camp drivers available in the Apple site are not compatible with that iMac.
Delete the Boot Camp drivers from the USB drive, open Boot Camp Assistant and try to download the Boot Camp drivers again. If you get a message telling you that they could not be downloaded, I would try reinstalling OS X through OS X Recovery, by holding down Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

  • Mac Bootcamp cause lossage in hard drive space

I was trying to install windows on my mac using bootcamp, but because the process took way too long, i deceided to stop the process. My hard drive is approximately 700-800 GB and the space I actually use is about 200-250 GB but it is saying i use up to 400 GB or hard drive. I used to Disk Inventry X to try to find where this extra 200GB are coming from and it says about 200GB is from "other files and folder". I am suspecting that the windows partition was created and hidden, because I can not find it in disk Utility either... If it helps i am using boot camp version 10.0.5 i think and was installing windows 7. I also have a 2012-2013 Macbook 13'. PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Hi AsianCraft,
You should be able to recover that disk space by deleting the Windows partition from within the Boot Camp Assistant. This should restore your disk to a single partition drive. There is more information about removing Boot Camp on Page 10 of the manual:
Boot Camp - Installation & Setup Guide (Mountain Lion)
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf
    Remove Windows from your Mac
How you remove Windows from your Mac depends on whether you installed Windows on a second partition or on a single-volume disk.
If you installed Windows on a second disk partition: Using Boot Camp Assistant as described below, remove Windows by deleting the Windows partition and restoring the disk to a single-partition OS X volume.
If your Mac has multiple disks and you installed Windows on a disk that has only one partition:
Start up in OS X and use Disk Utility, located in the Other folder in Launchpad, to reformat it as an OS X volume.
1 Start up your Mac in OS X.
2 Quit all open apps and log out any other users on your Mac.
    3 Open Boot Camp Assistant.
4 Select “Remove Windows 7,” then click Continue.
5 Do one of the following:
    • If your Mac has a single internal disk, click Restore.
    • If your Mac has multiple internal disks, select the Windows disk, select “Restore to a single
Mac OS partition,” then click Continue.
    Cheers,

  • Changing a partition drive size

I am using an iMac running OS X 10.8.5 with a 3TB memory disk drive.
When initially settin gup the system with the help of the Apple support team, a partition drive was established for use by iPhoto (iPhoto Disk Image.dmg) to store all the photos downloaded and accessed by the different users of the machine in one library. The size of the drive was set at 205GB and this has now been reached, such that no more photos can be downloaded.
Is it possible to extend (double) the size of the partition drive, if so how? Or, do I have to take a backup of this iPhoto library, remove (delete?) the partition drive and import the Library; if so, how do I ensure that all other users will pointing to the same/new Library location for iPhoto?

You will need to copy the data on the drive back to the large top partition.
    Remove the bottom 205GB partition.
Drag the top back to the bottom.'
    Apply
Select to add a partition. Set size I would error the large size. I suspect you have loads of space to spare. You might want to give it 1T.
    Apply
Copy the data back to new partition.
Hold down option key when launching iPhoto and select the library on the new partition.
Option 2) Create a third partition in the top portion of the drive. It's possible you have enough room on the 3T drive to add a large third partition.
Move the data to the new partition.'
Use the original partition for other file backups.
When you upgrade to Yosemite, I doubt you'll want to use iCloud drive backup for Photos. It will cost you a fortune for a library that large. Select to save locally.

  • How can I uninstall Bootcamp and Recover the partition for the Mac HD

How can I uninstall Bootcamp and recover the partition for the IMac HD?

Boot into OSX.  Go back into the Bootcamp utility in the Utilities folder and re-run it.  It will give you the option to remove the Windows partition and make the OSX partition fill the whole drive again.  OSX will NOT be lost in the process.  No re-installing necessary.  Only takes a few minutes or less to complete.

  • Win 8.1: Reset vs Install on partitioned drive (XP- upgrade 8- upgrade 8.1) now need clean install

    This is a little complicated.
    I have a Thinkpad T-60 (4GB) and a T-61p (8GB)
Both machines have SATA drives partitioned in 3 (System, Images, Data)
Originally, both had XP (the T-61p was RAM upgraded to 8 GB before upgrade (remember the $50 early-bird special?)
I upgraded the T60 without problem (as I recall).
I had to get the 64-bit physical upgrade as you could only download the version you already had (32-bit; remember that disaster?) for the T-61p.
Figuring I had 4 GB on the T-60, I used 64 bit as well, ending up with only 3 GB active.  I take it this was a waste and should have just used the  32-bit, right?
I clean installed (as I recall) 8.1 using a generic 8 key (right?) and then an 8.1 key (right?, or is that an 8 key that will still activate 8.1?)
So here it is 3 years later +/- and both 8.1 installs are pretty trashed so...
    I downloaded both the 8.1 32-bit and 64-bit .iso's
    I have my serial #'s
I tried a Reset on my Server last night (whole disk, no partitions) - it worked, and gave me an option to wipe all disks, or just the C: system disk (which I did, others intact). It is fine, all settings gone, no trash.
Now the question is what will happen with my partitioned drives. I want a clean install on the C: partition, and D: and E: left alone.
Will Reset trash all the partitions and load the entire disk? (NOT what I want) .. or ..
Should I use the Install option? (which I assume will go through the partition manager) and allow me to clean install on C: only.
Lastly, if I have read correctly, there is no point in putting 64-bit on the T-60 (4 GB) as all you end up is 3 GB active anyway, so I should go back to 32-bit and avoid the 64-bit headaches?
    Thanks!!!

After upgrading to Mavericks my Mac Pro does not open my double CD drives when I hit eject in the menu bar it locks up (please Help)?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

    *Bootcamp on External Hard Drive?*

By Microsofts Design no Windows can be installed and booted from external HDs. BootCamp just follows this.
However, according to this http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/ it can be done.
    Parallels

Parallels is an OS X application which don't need a restart of your Mac to run Windows.
Therefor you can run OS X and Parallels Windows side-by-side.
Main drawback is, that Windows runs not native (on the real hardware) but in a virtualized environment.
While this is more than acceptable for 'standard' Office programs, any program that needs direct hardware access (especially games and 3D-programs) either do not run at all or run at noticeable slower speed.
Also you have to realize that the amount of RAM in your Mac is divided between OS X and Parallels Windows.
    *What Options are there...*

BootCamp is no option then, since it needs a reboot everytime you want to switch between OS X and Windows.
Parallels (and VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox, BTW) run alongside OSX.
    Thanks
    You're welcome. Hope it helps.

  • Strange error when Bootcamp attempts to create partition for Windows

I get a strange error when I tell Bootcamp to create a partition for Windows. I get to the Create a Partition stage. I select 20GB for Windows leaving 91GB (39GB free) for OS X. I then click Partition and it gives me the following error
*The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.*
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
My disk is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), I have closed all applications (besides Bootcamp Assistant) and I have even restarted and tried again to see if that might help. Nothing. I can't get it to partition. Any thoughts? Can I partition my disk manually through disk utility and then select it in Bootcamp?

  • Attempting to use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to a mounted partitioned drive?

Had a power surge and my Mac Pro did not fare well. Was able to boot from one of the drives in read only mode, so I did a Time Capsule backup of everything on the drive. Reinstalled Mountain Lion. Booted the computer up and am trying to use Migration Assistant to take the Time Capsule backup and restore it to the 1TB drive. When I use Migration Assistant, it says that there is not enough space on the drive to do the restore. I looked in Disk Utility and saw that the start up disk is another one of the 1TB drives with about 600GB used, therefore not enough space to do the restore. I want to restore to the original drive, but it says it is a "Mounted Partitioned Drive". Can I use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to this mounted partitioned drive?
Thanks in advance for any help - greatly appreciated.

I am not sure, never had to go there, I have multiple bootable clones of the system online and off, and a couple 1500VA/900W UPS units powering everything.

  • SONY DUAL/DOUBLE LAYER DRIVES

Does anyone know which of Sony's new DVD burners work with the mac? I see that one model works with mac but only the dvd+r discs, ands it's an older model. I've heard some people say that even though the product information doesn't say 'Mac compatible' it still will work with the Mac. Is this true? I would just have to use Toast 6 or Tiger's built in burning software?? Does anyone know if the software will work with Dual/Double layer drives? I cannot find much info on this topic. I know it's still so new.

  • Mirror RAID on partitioned drive

Can you Mirror a partitioned drive (boot plus data)? thanks

thats no problem reformatting just wondered if I had a boot partition and a data partition how does a mirror work - automatically on both partitions or do you create two mirrors one for each partition<</div>
I know on my "hardware" mirrored RAID, it all automatic. Any information or partitioning written to the "primary" drive is instantly "mirrored" to the "secondary" drive. Mirrored RAID drives are configured to be "exactly" identical, that's why you need matching drive capacities as well as manufacturer.
As for "software" RAIDs, I'm sure they are setup the same way, except the computer takes over the process of making sure the information is the same on both drives. On my HW RAID, I don't even need it connected to a computer to do a HD restore.

Yes, the partition has to be bootable to be used as a startup partition. You would need to install OSX on the partition.
