Bootcamp on the MacPro

Hi everyone, I am a recent (one year)convert to Mac and have a question about Bootcamp. According to my local Apple store when Leopard is released on Friday
all versions of Bootcamp including version 1.4 that I have will stop working and
I won't be able to access my XP hd.I have Os X on one hd. and XP Pro on another and
switch back and forth all the time. I want to keep Tiger and then maybe put Leopard
on a 3rd drive when I'm ready and not be forced to. Are they really going to do this? Has anyone heard different? Any ideas would be appreciated

Use ear plugs next time.
Boot Camp Assistant won't launch come 1-1-2008.
Windows will still work.
Leopard may have new patches and drivers.
Good plan, and what any/everyone should do (treat Leo with kid gloves for a test ride).
Such a stealth 'disabling' of Windows and BootCamp would be difficult w/o a remote server connecting etc.
BootCamp would have to know via Apple Time Services and Apple Software Update running in Windows that Leopard shipped. And how many days, weeks etc before you are "allowed" to install etc? FUD.
Also, I would be very "careful" with Leopard and Windows updating Windows if Windows etc is running fine. Let others try first. Backup your Windows system (True Image or whatever you use or try WinClone). When running Windows, when you pop in the Leopard DVD there is an auto-run setup program to install and update the Apple drivers. If you don't put the DVD in while in WinPro, it continues to work as is.
The Mac Pro is proving to be an excellent Vista based system for me. I have Business and Home Premium (both x64) on mine currently, and running fine (64-bit Vista isn't even officially supported even with 10.5.0... maybe Apple is waiting for SP1, or maybe they plan to NOT support Vista 64, not sure why or what is up with that, it has taken a year for some support and drivers to get out mature working, often multiple updates (keeps getting better)).

  • Graphics cards available in the MacPro

I was just curious if anyone knows if Apple will provide any other option for the video cards in the MacPro (i.e. ATI Radeon cards)?
Most of the Autodesk products (3DSMax and Revit) require an ATI FireGL Pro card ...yes I run evil Win7 via Bootcamp (works great if you have to be in the evil Win environment!).
I am just considering buying the MacPro (vs. an ugly PC box of some kind) and was wondering if anyone has substituted the Radeon cards for another?
I've been using my MBPro17 for 2 years now (Bootcamp, Win7, Revit, etc) and it has worked like a champ (something I cannot say for the PC laptops in the office), so this has led to the desire to get another Mac instead of a PC to work in the Windows environment.
    Thanks

    A. Wrong forum. This is iMac, not Mac Pro ;-)
    B. You always have the liberty of upgrading/adding another card in MacPros. It's as easy as a beige box.
Apple usually keeps it's BTO offerings to a minimum.

  • How do I install bootcamp on the new drive that I installed with the dvd drive adapter

Hello, I have a macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch, I have just earned some money, enough to buy a SSD, and I happily went to the store and bought a samsung evo 840 120gb SSD. My plan was to clean install windows 8.1 on the SSD, I already had bootcamp on the 500GB HDD with windows 8 that came with the mac, so I backed up the important files from the windows partition. I deleted the partition, and restored it to the mac's partition (which I was going to partition again after the windows installation is complete for the storage for my windows partition) I made a installation usb with the iso I have made with bootcamp assistant, and waited. After that was done I restarted my computer holding the option key, then I booted into the EFI boot partition, and went through the process, entered the serial key, and agreed the thing, and then  when I did the format it said it couldn't do it, so I took it out put it in an external hard-drive case, then I plugged it into my windows 8 laptop, then I opened command prompt, then I typed "diskpart", then after the administrator thing popped up, I clicked yes, then in the diskpart prompt, I typed in "list disk", and my SSD was disk 1, so I did "select disk 1" then I typed "clean" Then I went into the drive manager, then a thing popped up saying which one would I choose between MBR or GPT so I selected GPT, then made a new NTFS partition on the SSD, then took it out, then I popped it back in then went through the installation, until the actual installing part where after copying files is done, this pops up "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x8007045D" So I downloaded a torrent because I had thought that this was corrupted, and downloaded a torrent from a website, and downloaded the iso, and I tried and the same error, again and again of taking out the drive from my computer to format it and putting it back in again (since there was some files made on the SSD) so I had decided that I would download a windows 8 torrent, then I did then it couldn't even start, so I want to install windows 8.1 on my macbook pro, on a separate drive in the the DVD cage (not external, internal), would there be any way to do it, please help!

Even though thunderbolt is not hot puggable in Bootcamp, is the use of mini displayport to vga/dvi still hot pluggable under Bootcamp?

This is Apple support on the subject

Can I plug and unplug devices into a Thunderbolt peripheral that is already recognized?
Yes. That is the best way to add and remove devices from the Thunderbolt chain while Windows 7 is running.
    Have you tried?

After running bootcamp, DVD drive is detected by Windows 8. But after installing drivers, no longer can detect. Device Manager shows that DVD drive is unplugged! Drivers in Bootcamp “removed” the DVD drive. I think there is an issue because I reinstalled Windows 8. If I don't install driver, then I have reduced functionality (no Apple keyboard, no sound etc), but once I install driver, I lose my DVD drive.

Hi, guys, I have had the exact same problem since the summer of 2010. Here's what I was able to find out.
Deleting upper/lower filters, running all those Fix Ya programs and other Microsoft crap is useless. This problem is most certainly has nothing to do with registry of any software on your computer. I took my HP 9620us to a couple of repair places and, they tried a lot of things and it appears that the root of this problem is a faulty motherboard connection. Of course, it costs about 400 bucks to fix it so I'm not sure I want to pay this kind of money.
Anyway, if somebody was able to fix it PLEASE post here to let us know. Again I am 99 per cent sure it's some piece of hardware in the motherboard.

    Hi there,
The simplest way is to drag it across wirelessly using the 'Airdrop' application once both computers are near one another. 'Airdrop' can be found near the top, on the left hand side menu, within 'Finder'.

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

  • The "fn" function key is not enabled to work in Bootcamp as the "insert" key

  • How can transfer Mac Outlook Contact files to the MacPro Address book?

I tried the suggested three step process, ie, (1) Export Contacts from Outlook in txt formant, and (2) Open the txt file Excel and Save As in csv format, (3) Import the csv file into the MacPro Address book. However the Export from Outlook Contacts in txt results in a messed up file with data in random columns.  The Import into the Address book resulted in 21,000 plus entries (my Outlook Contacts had about 3000 plus).  Any solutions?

Mac Outlook exports files in a .olm format. What you need is an .olm to the Apple format converter - here's such a tool - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/olm-converter-pro/id522796199?mt=12 = expensive but it gets pretty decent reviews.

  • DVD-RAM drive from G4 AGP in the MacPro?

Just bought a new MacPro. I would like to move my DVD-RAM drive from my trusty old Sawtooth to the MacPro. I have a lot of old Type I cartridges with archived data on them that I would like to keep using, but on the new machine, since my husband is wanting me to give him the G4. The DVD_RAM Type1 cartridges are like "monster" ZIP disks and really convenient and dependable for backups.
An Apple Tech Support rep said it would "probably" work on the MacPro, but that I should post the question on the Forums as well, to see what others had to say. Any takers?
Also, if there is a new drive I could purchase that would accommodate the Type I cartridges and technology, I'd be interested in that information. I did research on these kinds of drives for my G4 some months ago, but found it hard to determine if there was a new "Superdrive" style drive with this capability.

I had to look up PATA and found info at http://www.directron.com/patasata.html to be very informative.
I know that my hard drives use a connector that looks like the parallel connectors in these photos. I'm not sure about the optical drives, because I've never had a reason to take them out or change them until now. I'll have to look inside and see.
They do talk in this article about the bulk of PATA connectors being more significant than the new serial ATA connectors. Considering the comments shared by "the hatter" that could be a problem. I'll check this out in the next couple of days and see is any hindrances regarding space come to light.
I'd still like to know if there is a new optical drive out there somewhere that could provide a DVD-RAM (Type I cartridge and newer formats) option for the MacPro. I hope someone can share some knowledge about that.
Thanks for your comments Ned and hatter.

How much of a hurry are you in, and are you considering upgrading to Lion?
File Vault on Snow Leopard only encrypts home folders you select, and doesn't work well with Time Machine.
But Lion will have "full disk encryption" of local or external disks.  See File Vault 2 here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html

  • Bootcamp error, 'the startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.'

I am trying to set up bootcamp for gaming purposes.
I attempted this several months ago and was able to proceed to the point of accessing the Windows disk utility but noticed that I was running out of memory on the partition. I believe I deleted the partition through mac OS, thinking I would simply re-run Bootcamp. Honestly, I have forgotten the details but now am unable to get past an error message on Bootcamp saying, "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition."
Also, when I look at my disk utility settings I see I have two Macintosh HD with exactly the same numbers, i.e. 1.94 TB free of 2.09 TB.
Any assistance with this would be appreciated.
    Thank you.
