Bootcamp on Thunderbolt SSD freezes randomly

Hi.
I have an iMac late 2012 (27" with GTX680MX - i5)
I installed windows bootcamp on the internal Fusion-drive at first - it worked fine, but the performance was too slow.
So I invested in an external thunderbolt SSD.
After installing Windows 8 on this (leaving a 20 gb partition on the fusion-drive), windows starts up fine.
But after a few updates and installs, it starts to freeze randomly for 30-60 seconds.
I have done two complete re-installs ... same issue.
I updated SSD firmware... same issue.
I have tried to set windows to high performance and PCI-E to not use power safe.... no luck.
Anyone know how to fix this or why it happens?

Thanks for your reply.
I thought that since tunderbolt is based on PCI-E it would behave the same way as an internal drive.
The installation is very straight forward via bootcamp, and it runs fine, except for these random issues... which might then be due to windows generally not liking external hookups.
(Yes, I do need a PC as I work with marketing in the gaming industry... and I just needed something that could hang on the wall and still be capable of running games. No current PC manufacture does this well)
PS! I am posting this from the win boot.

  • Bootcamp on Thunderbolt SSD drive fails

iMac 27 2011 with latest Lion installed
I switched a while ago to ssd using thunderbolt because the intern hd was waayy to slow. For this i'm using 256gb samsung SSD via Thunderbolt cable (Seagate goflex). So far it works fantastic for my purposes. I also have a bootcamp partition (on the 1TB disk) installed to play games. Because the performance of it ***** bigtime (again the 1TB hd) i thought installing bootcamp on the SSD drive instead of the 1TB disk.
Thus i removed bootcamp from HD, unmounted the HD drive so bootcamp cant find it. After this i keep getting that the SSD disk isnt journaled (it is). Made some searches via google but coulndt find the right answer.
So my question.. Is it possible to install Windows (via bootcamp) on the same SSD disk which is connected via Thunderbolt and being used as my main OS.
    Thanks!
ps. in the screenshot the SSD drive has 2 partitions, i made this by connecting the ssd thunderbolt to my macbook pro and using disk utility

    no one?

  • Bootcamp on Thunderbolt SSD

I have a Windows 8 bootcamp partition on my internal SSD on my 15" retina MBP. To give OS X more space, I cloned the bootcamp partition on to an external SSD through thunderbolt. On my Mac Mini, I can actually boot in to Windows 8 on this external drive through thunderbolt and it works wonderfully. However, on my macbook, I select the external SSD to boot to and it just comes up with a black page with a blinking cursor at the very top left.
I'm not sure what I did wrong? I can boot to the external windows partition just fine on my mac mini through thunderbolt, so I am not sure what I have done wrong. Could it be that I have kept the internal Windows partition in the internal drive on the MBP, so that when I select a partition to boot to I see two Windows partitions?

Windows can not boot from an external drive. This is a Microsoft restriction. Windows creates and requires a system registry which your external drive does not have. I don't know how it is booting from an external drive on your Mac Mini. But this question has been asked both here and in many Windows forums many times. Maybe Windows 8 is different when it comes to installation and booting from an external drive.
You should check some of the Windows forums to see what they are saying about booting Windows from an external drive. It does not matter whether the external drive is on a Mac or on a Windows PC, the Microsoft/Windows restriction is the same.

  • 17" Macbook Pro late 2011 freezing randomly

Lately my 17" Macbook Pro (October 2011) has been freezing randomly. At first I thought the cause was high-usage applications, but apparently not. It's been freezing when I read something on reddit, when I'm on Facebook, when I open Photo Booth, or (the latest freeze) when I'm typing something in Text Edit.
When it froze and refused to boot back up (it got stuck on a grey screen, and I also got a vertical lined blue screen), I took it in. The repair guys figured it was the logic board, so they replaced it and the battery too.
Now tonight I just got it back, and it froze AGAIN. I was able to boot it back up (I had to do a hard boot), and it went to the login screen fine. However, when it got to the login screen, the fans started working overtime like crazy. My computer was vibrating, I could feel it in my fingers as I typed in my login info. Once everything was loaded, the fans slowed down pretty quick, and it's as quiet as a lamb right now.
Could this be a heat issue? Or maybe something to do with the hard drive? The vents were clear when booting, I didn't think to check the air though.
It's got two months of warranty left, would they take it in? I can't forcefully make it freeze (it happens randomly), so I can't really show them any proof.

You've the issue as discussed in this -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0 thread.
It's a problem with the way the GPU was soldered onto 15" and 17" machines. It's not everyone who suffers the same problem, but your symptoms match the same problem to a "t."
Read over some of the article and you'll see that you're not alone. Apple's 'fix' for the problem is to sell you a new logic board, but they can continue to fail one after the other. The only true 'fix' (and we'll just have to wait and see just how long these fixes work) is to have the GPU reballed onto the logic board.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Macbook Pro (mid 2007) freezes randomly

    Hi all,
Last week my Macbook pro (2007) started to freeze randomly. 2-3 years ago I added an SSD (64 gb crucial M4) and replaced the dvd drive for an 500 gb HDD. The configuration worked perfectly until last week. My macbook sometimes works for a couple hours and sometimes it freezes just after 30 minutes from startup. Sometimes during an freeze I can use the programs that were open. For example when reading an PDF I can scroll 1-2 pages down/up. When I scroll more than 1-2 pages Preview freezes as well.
I have done the following things to exclude some frequent problems.
Set my fan speed to 6000 rpm to exclude an heat problem. The system freezes also with 'normal' temperatures.
Checked my SDD & HDD on file consistency and repaired the disks with disk utility (booted from Mac Os X install cd). Disk utility reports that the disks are okay. I also checked with Techtool pro on bad blocks and smart status. All seems to be all right.
Checked my RAM with tech tool
    Reset NVRAM
Checked console for error messages. There are no messages at all between a couple of minutes before a freeze and a forced turn off/on.
I haven't installed new software recently.
Last time when my macbook froze, I had an terminal window open. In this window I could execute some commands, only the most basic. Top, sudo, shutdown etc. didn't work. I could navigate to all folders on both SDD & HDD. But I couldn't see any files, only folders. That is strange right?
I think the next step is to change the hard drives for an other (new) one, to exclude hard drive problems. But before I open my Macbook I was wondering if anyone has other ideas to solve this problem.
    Thanks for any help.

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "I/O error" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application. Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.

  • Installing Windows 7 on an External Thunderbolt SSD

    I have an iMac 21,5" late 2012.
I want to install Windows 7 Professional Bootcamp on an External Thunderbolt SSD (Basic NTFS partition).
I tried the normal Bootcamp installation Guide but it wouldnt let me install on the external SSD drive.
I also tried using this guide http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7-to-usb-external-hard-drive-m ust-read/
But didnt work, probably because it's not for Mac users + not Thunderbolt.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thank you for reply!
    Best Regards
    Jonas

yeah thats what I tried with this guide, as I already have windows installed on the iMac but on the internal fusion drive (that doesnt work properly in Windows).
Thats why I want external SSDs booting windows when I edit videos (all my softwares are windows based).
Im gonna try a couple of more things, as I always say "there's gotta be a way!* hehe.
Ill be sure to post here IF I find a solution.

  • HP Elite 7100 freezes randomly

Mostly brand new (about 3 months old) HP Elite 7100 mT (i5 750, 4GB RAM, ATI 5450) freezes randomly.
Tried reinstalling OS with clean Windows and fresh drivers of HP website and/or INTEL/AMD accordingly, still happens.
When it freezes, the windows log doesn't write anything, only that the subsequent boot was unplanned (meaning it's not kernel level, but hardware level).
I used diagnostic software to stress-test the computer but temperatures remain within normal parameters and stress-testing it does not make it freeze - it is apparently completely random (about once a day or two).
Anything I should try or do before I start the agonizing process of trying to explain the local HP support what's wrong so that they can take the computer to the lab and try to reproduce it to no avail?

T-G, EVGA is a good manufacturer.  However, the card is 9" in length.  This may present some space problems.  As for temp problems, I suggest seeing if nVidia makes software to allow you to control the fan speed.  My XFX card is ATI.  ATI has software (Catalyst Control Center) to allow me to adjust the fan speed and overclock the card if I desire.

I am a proud user of Firefox. I started experiencing the freezing problem since i updated to Firefox 18 and now I am facing the same problem with Firefox 19. Firefox does not respond to any of my clicks and then I have to close it using Task Manager. This is happening frequently and randomly. It does not freeze on a particular site or anything else. It just freezes randomly. Please do reply if anyone has a solution to this problem.

  • Fresh Install of Windows 8.1 on HP Pavilion a4313w freezes randomly

I've done four fresh installs of Windows 8.1 on the HP Pavilion a4313 Desktop PC in our home and it always freezes randomly. Even in safe mode, it freezes. I've done hardware tests with BurnIn Test 8.0 and everything including the hardware memory is fine. Antivirus is installed and it's completely updated with Windows Updates. Once I installed the 32-bit version of Windows 8.1 and it still froze. I performed a fresh install, because it would hang sometimes with Windows 7.
Anyways, I am more then ready and willing to post more information or test results upon request. Anyone have suggestions?

    Hello @buddhapunk36,
I understand that your computer running Windows 8.1 keeps freezing and you have run the hardware tests and it comes back okay. I would suggest that you try installing the original Windows 7 that came with your computer and see if the freezing continues. If it does continue the the issue appears to be a physical issue. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html.
If the issue does not continue then your system may not be compatible with Windows 8.1.

  • I'm booting from a new LaCie Thunderbolt SSD and it won't wake from sleep.

As my boot drive I have a new 1TB LaCie Thunderbolt SSD Disk. It's connected to a 27" 2.7 GHz Intel i5 iMac (mid 2011). I'm running OS X 10.8.2. Nothing else is connected on Thunderbolt.
Everything runs fine and very fast, with the one exception of not waking from sleep.
When I try to wake it up, the screen illuminates and the desktop is not completely frozen: I can drag windows around, but I can't open applications or do anything with the Finder. I get a spinning beachball if I move the cursor over the menu bar at the top. The only option is to restart.
I've contacted LaCie and they say their devices are "storage devices" and not "system drives". Yet I've been running my system from a 1TB LaCie D2 for at least a couple of years. I pointed out to LaCie support that nowhere on the box does it say their devices are for storage only.
    Any suggestions?

@Kappy - not the most useful of replies mate to be honest. After all, there is a strong possibility that this has everything to do with the way OS X and the thunderbolt interface handle wake from sleep states.
    @kbrine:
I am having exactly the same problem but with slightly different hardware:
    iMac 27 (mid-2011) with Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Booting from a Crucial M4 SSD in an OWC SATA enclosure connected to a Lacie eSata thunderbolt hub (which is connected to the iMac).
In normal use the drive is super fast and works really well.
But my problem is exactly as you describe, put the machine into sleep, and on wake everything appears to come back ok however you can't open apps from the dock and the spinning beachball appears. You can't do anything else and you have to reboot.
Now the interesting thing is that if I put the machine to sleep and then wake it up again within 1 minute everything works perfectly. After a longer period of time - and I'm presuming when the energy saving profile moves to a deeper sleep state (I don't know for sure so speculation from me here) - I get the problem we are having and I have to reboot.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Updated my SSD to the latest firmware.
No firmware updates available for the OWC enclosure nor the Lacie eSata hub (at least, not that I could find)
Turned off bluetooth (others on this forum had a problem with BT interfering with Thunderbolt displays coming back on after sleep)
Turned off 'Automatic Brightness Adjust' (again, based on Thunderbolt Display problems that others have reported)
I've tried out AutoEJECT and Jettison apps that unmount all external drives and re-mount them when waking from sleep. They've made absolutely no difference. Save yourself a few $$ and don't bother buying them from the App Store.
I've tried unplugging and re-inserting the Thunderbolt cable connecting my eSata hub to the iMac. No effect.
And that's as far as I've got. There are only two things left for me to try:: disable 'Power Nap' which - apparently - can also cause problems with Thunderbolt devices during sleep. But I'm not confident with that being the solution. Turn the power off to the Crucial M4 when the problem occurs and then re-power it in the hope that it causes some sort of refresh of the connection to happen. Again, not sure that's a good solution either as I don't want to be powering down my SSD every time I bring the iMac out of sleep!!!
So I too am open to ideas and opinions on what might be causing these wake-from-sleep problems arising when Mac OS is booted from an external thunderbolt drive.

  • I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it.  I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home

I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it.  I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home, a MacBook Air for when I'm on the road, all with TB.  Can a single external TB drive boot all three hardware configurations successfully?  I've been told that differences in hardware configurations between the systems make this impossible.  Is this correct?

Piece or peace of cake really though.
A quick install on new hard drive or SSD or 10K and less than an hour to move everything over properly.
YOU looked for a quick fix and found none and all the brick walls.
It is not  days of work to do a clean install and migrate.
There are few if any apps that need to be freshly installed either though there are updates needed for them to be compliant, any driver or plugin also and that is done ahead of time with research.
And your backup or clone of your system is taken care of - you leave the old system boot drive 'as is' untouched.
Also, better strategy to move most all your home folder (except for its own ~/Library) to ANOTHER disk drive and not on t he system drive at all.
As for applications on its own drive or 3rd party, beeen there done that, even SSD or 15K SCSI - no benefit in performance or organization.

  • X freezes randomly, screen turning black or flickering

    Hey everyone,
I'm having this annoying issue where X freezes randomly, I can't tell exactly when it happens. But when it happens, the following occurs:
    - Screen is frozen, sometimes turns black, sometimes turns black and reappears, but still frozen.
    - Cursor and sound (e.g. music) still works
    - When switching to a new tty (CTRL-ALT-F6), I can log in and restart gdm using
    sudo systemctl restart gdm
    - When I'm in the other tty and trying to switch back to the graphical view, I get stuck completely, not even switching consoles works now.Reset is the only option from there
    - Blindly restarting gnome-shell doesn't work
I somehow have the feeling, it happens more often when I physically move my laptop, but thats just a gut feeling. It also happens often when my screen is locked and I try to log back in.
I found this bug report, but its quite old and that doesn't help me: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14594
Any help would be very appreciated, its really annoying to lose my work so often.

  • System freezes randomly in Mac OS X Leopard

I have a problem with my system which freezing randomly. When it freezes, I can still move the mouse pointer around, but I can’t move or open any object on the screen.
It doesn’t seem to be connected to a particular program since it might occur in various programs. I checked the hardware and also catalogue structures, authentication and so forth with disc warrior. Another odd thing is that I can’t seem to beable to boot from the installation DVD. I’ve looked in the various logs (for example the crash logs), but there doesn’t seem to be any notation of the freezes on any of the logs. Another thing is that I sometime have trouble starting the computer, pushing the on-button doesn’t result in anything. Is there anything else I might try before reinstalling the system?

  • Re: Tecra S10 and S11 freeze randomly

We have several Tecra S10's and S11's. They freeze randomly during the day. Some even twice within half an hour, others spread it out through the day.
The Tecra's are all Windows 7. Some have 64 bit, others a 32 bit installation. After the Windows 7 installation we removed additional software we don't need, like McAfee, Toshiba goodies (Assist, Tempro, etc), Ebay, etc. After that we activatie Office 2007 and we Microsoft-update the the laptops. So far so good.
However, after a week or two just simply working in Word causes the Tecra to freeze. Even ctrl+alt+del is not working. The Tecra has to be forced to shut off by holding the power button down.
Does anybody recognize these 'frozen moments'. It's very anoying.

Thats the reason why I asked if notebooks are connected to some company LAN.
I saw somewhere on this forum that similar issues were noticed in the same situation. Notebook was somehow blocked when was part of domain.
Probably some data exchange between notebook and server was responsible for this blocking and freezing issue.
I really don't know what to say. If you have several notebooks with the same problem I recommend you to contact nearest authorized Toshiba service provider and ask for help. You know they have contact with Toshiba people and if there is something serious they can help you with this.
I really don't believe some long discussion here will help you much.
If your local administrator cannot find out what the problem can be than you need professional help.
    Do you agree with me?
