Bootcamp partition larger than asked for. System won't boot.

I have tried to load windows via bootcamp and gave a partition of 65gb. When XP windows installer came up it said it was installing on a partition of 130gb. So I canceled the installation to be safe and it restarted my system. Now I only get a grey screen. I've tried to boot from Mac OS cd but only got a folder with a question mark. I expect I've lost everything on the HD. I can live with that but I can't my system booted again with a OSX CD. I have tried all key boot combos but no luck starting with CD. Any clues???

Nope, no luck. I removed the HD from the system and reformatted it and zeroed out the boot partitions. Got it booting again with the OS CD. It sees the HD and I'm able to reload the operating system. I think I'll stick to Mac only OS on this system in the mean while. Thanks for your input!

I'll respectuflly disagree with Paul_31's advice about ordering replacement disks. We know that whatever your model is, it's capable of running Mavericks. But there are some models of Macintosh that shipped with OS X 10.5.x that can be upgraded to Mavericks, and if you order exact replacement disks for that model from Apple, you will wind up with the 10.5 operating system, which can't be upgraded to Mavericks by itself, since the computer needs to be at 10.6 to upgrade to Mavericks. You can purchase OS X 10.6 installation disks from Apple for $19.99, but that, too, may be useless, because your model may be too new to support 10.6.

CSound1 is on the right track, because he's probably trying to get you to a screen that can display information about your Mac - such as the serial number, and perhaps the amount of installed memory.

Once we know more about your model, then we can advise you how to proceed. Here's another question. Is it your intention to completely erase the internal hard drive of the computer (which will also erase all of the installed programs on the computer)?

Btrfs: System won't boot anymore after unclean shutdown

Hi,
I have a problem with my ArchLinux (kernel 3.19.2-1-ARCH).
I have my root partition as BTRFS and no /boot partition.
After an unclean shutdown the system won't boot anymore.
GRUB loads the kernel and the kernel starts but it hangs saying: Mounted /dev/sda3 on real root.
Then, I have to start a Live CD and do:
btrfsck /dev/sda3
After that the system boots correctly.
I've tried adding fsck to the HOOKS in the mkinitcpio.conf file and in fact it tries to fsck the filesystem (but with BTRFS, fsck.btrfs doesn't work...)
What can I do?

I'm also having this problem. I tried booting up the netinstall image to debug it, but I can't mount my btrfs volume from there either: mount just hangs. After a while, the kernel goes:

From this post I guessed that I might just need to wait so that I could defrag the volume once it was mounted, but it's been hanging for over 15min now (the message above continues to come up periodically).
Like the OP in the thread I linked to above, my btrfs volume is inside an LVM volume (which is on dm-crypt). Don't know whether that's relevant.

[SOLVED] Switch to systemd - Now system won't boot

I saw that todays update upgrade included the installation of systemd. I looked the wiki and did the necessary changes (I already had made the /etc/hostname etc. files). So I added the
init=/bin/systemd
line to grub and now my system won't boot. I get an error saying something about syslog service not enabled and then a black screen. I can boot my machine fine without the "init=/bin/systemd" line but I want to run a pure systemd system since Arch is moving to it anyway. In the wiki it mentions to install systemd-sysvcompat but it conflicts with initscripts it says. What am I doing wrong or missing?

Is LVM handled automatically by systemd? The reason I ask is because I have the USELVM= set to YES in rc.conf.
I made the permanent transition to systemd and did not start alsa at all - sound works fine - so I never bothered with the alsa-store/alsa-restore service files at all - it just works! Also dbus gets handled by default in systemd so you don't need any starting of dbus service at all... it just works.

System won't boot-no chime.

Despite repeated attempts and resetting the CUDA button, the system won't boot when start button is pressed. In the first few seconds it seems to make normal sounds; but no chime and settles into simply fan noise. This is true even if using C (with an Install CD). or Shift key. Is there anything else I can try? (I know it's actually a G3 B&W Motherboard; but I had nowhwere else to post it)

I do not remember exactly what was happening when it stopped. It may have been executing something , hung up, and wouldn't respond to the Command-Opt-Esc or I do remember one incident when it was booting up and stopped when it was partly thru "searching for local discs.
I checked the ref. article and tried to measure the voltages on the power connector. I was never quite sure what pin was what, since the colors did not jive with those in the article. At any rate 2 were approx. + 5 V (one was 4.85), the rest were essentially zero (I believe 1 or 2 were about 300 mv). I did notice that when the power connector is reconnected and start up is attempted, 3 little green lights come on on the motherboard. One goes off after a while.
I have tried the old Sonnet upgrade and have tried reseating all the RAM modules. All to no avail.
The Hard drive and all other parts seemed to be working fine prior to the failure.

Help please. I have a kt6 delta running an athlon 2700+ xp chip, 512 mb ddr 400.
When I set the fsb at the correct speed for the chip (166) the system won't boot hard drive led lights up constant. dvd drive and cd-r drive each run but the system won't boot. system seems to run fine at default and 133 mhz but the chip is incorrectly identified in windows (xp pro sp1) Any Ideas whats wrong?

Hi - I have the same board with the same processor, I have not problems rebooting after changing the bus speed. But I have had problems rebooting after adding in any card PCI or AGP. the system seems to have trouble clearing the Cmos, I would try clearing the CMOS with the JBAT. it doesn’t always seem to work but I have had some luck, though I have also pulled out the battery a couple of time too..

Clean install OS.10.6.8 update it completly. May be you ignored some firmware update.
I have two incedents.
My thunderbolt port stopped working after upgrading to ML 10.8. I booted from external 10.6 , 10.7 still didnt work. Then i clean installed 10.6.8 and ran software update it updated the thunderbolt firmware and all is well now. This firmware update for some reason didnt show up in ML 10.8.
Secondly , when i upgraded my Brother's Macbook from 10.5 to 10.6.3 it would install but stuck with crossed out circle. Then i downgraded checked for update found an efi update , then the 10.6.3 worked fine.

After the latest update that changed how intel ucode is updated, my system won't boot.
I think I missed a line when I edited "/etc/grub.d/10_linux" and ran grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
I can't run grub-mkconfig from another machine, as it uses the live kernel info.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I'll have to reinstall

What is the Arch iso version?
That would probably be mid-2012 at the very latest I think as that's when I remember completely moving over to systemd...

Are you on wifi or cellular? Cellular has download size limits that may be part of the issue.
You can also look on the app's support page and see what they recommend.

Magic TrackPad wont connect in bootcamp 4. Windows asks for a pairing pin

I am running bootcamp 4 and using a 32 bit version of Windows 7. Every time I try to connect the Magic Trackpad it loads the the drivers but when I go to use the pad it says a bluetooth device is trying to connect and asks for a pairing pin. Is there an updated driver for BootCamp 4?. Magic Trackpad connected and worked flawlessly (as usual) in Mac OS X Maverick.

UPDATE: I installed Vista on Bootcamp and tried the Magic TrackPad driver. It has the same problem. I can get the device to work as advertised on the initial install and reboots in the same OS. But when you switch from Windows to Mac OS X (or vice-versa) the device will not work: in Windows is listed as paired and connected, but does not work. In Mac OS X, it will not connect automatically and does not work. If you manually try to connect the Bluetooth icon briefly shows connected and then disconnects.
I sent a bug report to Apple as a "developer" and they state that it is a known issue. I guess we simply wait for them to get around fixing the drivers at some point in the distant future. Clearly they ignore these forums altogether. The experience has left me disappointed with Apple and their slow and inadequate response to problems. I would rather they devote some resources to getting their existing products to work instead of wasting resources to add iPhone-style displays to Mac OS X. If I wanted buggy drivers and no support I should have just stayed with Windows.

Hello Reid613, You are correct. HP does not ship system disk with their computer systems. HP suggest you make a set of HP Recovery Restore Disk when you get your system, in case you ever needed to restore the software or the hard drive fails and would need to be replaced.
When you receive a message of this type, the system cannot locate either the hard drive, or the operating system on the hard drive.
If the hard drive has not become faulty, the operating system may have become corrupted. Sometimes a corrupted operating system can be repaired but you would need a Vista Disk to be able to accomplish this, which as you suggested, you do not have.
It may be that your only option would be to perform a HP Recovery Restore, which would wipe the hard drive clean and restore all the software that came with your system. You would loose all the data you have added to the system since you got it, unless you have backups for your data.
To perform a HP Recovery Restore, boot the system and immediately start tapping the F-11 key and see if you can access the HP Restoore Recovery Utility.
If so, just follow the onscreen instructions and the system would be put back as it was when shipped from HP.
This assumes the hard drive has not failed.

LCD/Santa Rosa systems won't boot from external drives or DVDs

A critical issue with supporting the LED MacBook Pro systems is that to boot from (or install OS to) any external FW Hard Drives MUST be partitioned with the GUID Partition Table option, not the older Apple Partition Map.
This also seems to impact utilities like Disc Warrior and Tech Tool Pro -- the lastest versions of these will not boot either of the two LED MacBook Pro 15" models that I've tested. (This is confirmed on the utilities websites.)
In short, to boot from an external drive it apparently must be formatted with the GUID option (I have no un-partitioned external drives to test). And to boot from a utility CD/DVD -- I haven't found any discs other than the included Apple Software Restore DVD's that will boot these systems.

something else for booting that Alsoft and Micromat
are working on right now. But for those of us who
make our living supporting macs, working with these
machines may require reformatting of external drives
(you can't reformat just one partition) and not allow
use of our standard CD/DVD bootable utility discs.
You know, you might get a bit more help if your tone was a bit more pleasant. I hope it works out for you.
One might argue that those who "make their living supporting macs" might have done better to keep themselves abreast of what was happening in "Theoryland" some time earlier - say 15 months ago when people first realised that intel macs used the GUID partition system. Then they wouldn't be too surprised. I'm not, neither are the others here who are wading in to HELP.

Portege M400: Why am I not asked for a password at boot?

Hi,
I have a Portege M400 and I used the Toshiba Security Assist software to set up a BIOS boot password as well as an HDD protection password. This software, as well as the actual BIOS (Esc+F1 at boot) both show that the password I set is registered/recognized.
However, I am not actually asked for either of those passwords when I boot the computer!!!
I have a dual-boot system with the original WinXP for Tablet PC on one of the partitions, and an Ubuntu Feisty on another. My boot loader is GRUB but I don't understand why that should affect the behaviour of the BIOS that should happen before it calls the boot loader...
Can someone help me with this? It would be really important for me to protect my BIOS and the hard drive.

1. Check your security settings with the Toshiba password utilty. Are these configured correctly?
2. Did you set the user or the supervisor password? If you only set the supervisor password you are not asked for the password.
3. Try to set the HDD and User pw in the initial bios setup (press ESC when prowering on).
