Bootcamp partition resize problems
Hi everyone,
In first words i need to admit im a total noob at this terminal tricks, but thuought past 3 days im trying to make that up as i have caused some major malufunction in disk tables :< I have recently needed some extra space on my bootcamp partition, i did this by shrinking Macintosh HD main partition by couple of GB, than i booted Windows and used some user friendly application to extend bootcamp partiton. It worked till the reboot. Next time when i wanted to boot windows the screen was black. I used the advices found here:
nothing changed.
So i used advices in this site:
and matched partitons start LBA and size so that GPT would match MBR, now when i try to boot windows it tries to boot but a message saying "missing operating system" appears. I tried to understand this whole MBR, GPT and GRUB magic but 3 days is just not enough.
1) This is what Partition inspector prints:
*** Report for internal hard disk ***
Current GPT partition table:
# Start LBA End LBA Type

2) This is what sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0 prints
MacBook-Pro-Czika:~ Czika$ sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0
Password:
fdisk: could not open MBR file /usr/standalone/i386/boot0: No such file or directory

3) This is what sudo gdisk print shows:
Command (? for help): print
Disk /dev/disk0: 976773168 sectors, 465.8 GiB
Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): 09A12291-5410-41FA-B651-D0C0F041C8A8
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 976773134
Partitions will be aligned on 8-sector boundaries
Total free space is 58595717 sectors (27.9 GiB)

4 888399872 976773119 42.1 GiB 0700 BOOTCAMP
Now that is odd for me and i suspect it could have a big role in this malufanction is a fact, that my BOOTCAMP is no longer 42.1GB as i added to this value some between 16-18 GB. Also start sector and end sector of BOOTCAMP were changed as i used site mntioned above to calculate the (as i think) proper value (used - http://jonsview.com/fixing-mbr-tables-on-imac-or-mbp-triple-boot-setups)
Im stuck in this strange situation, im really determined to fix that as i regard formating as a last resort.
Any help welcomed
You can not resize partitions on a drive containing a Boot Camp partition, except by using Camp Tune. If you modified the partitions without using Camp Tune you will have to erase and reformat your drive to a single OSX partition. Then you will need to run Boot Camp Assistant and reinstall Windows.

Installing Windows from virtualisation onto bootcamp partition - formatting problem!
Hello!
I hope I can describe this well enough.
I'm in the situation of trying to install Windows 7 from a .iso I've made as my superdrive is totally dead. I'm running 10.7.4.
Currently what I've done is basically the first chunk of steps from this post:
Installing Windows 7 on MacBook Pro without SuperDrive | CommitBlog
I get hung up on the windows installer right away though. When I'm installing windows into my raw disk (bootcamp.vmdk) I get this:
"Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80070057"
I've tried reformatting the partition I made with boot camp assistant to NTFS preemptively with Paragon NTFS in hopes that the installer would skip the formatting step, but no dice.
Any thoughts on how to move forward here? Is there a permissions change that I somehow haven't made? I can't seem to find any documentation or posts on anyone in exactly this situation.
This is a really pressing problem actually, so quick responses are especially appreciated!
All the best and thanks in advance
-IjnadI've actually resolved this!
Well, not that I fixed it. But I was able to hack into Boot camp assistant and convinve it to let me make a bootable Windows 7 Usb key and install from that!

Hey
So I used bootcamp from when it was in beta on OS X Tiger - I now want to resize the partitions to give windows a bit more drive space, but since the bootcamp beta has expired i'm at a loss for how to do this. Does anyone know? Not sure if its possible. I don't think its possible to resize it even if boot camp assistant was operational. I always had to reinstall windows if I wanted the space to larger/smaller.

Bootcamp Partition Restore Problems
I ran the Bootcamp Installation and loaded Windows XP sp2. Needless to say I had issues and opted to just remove what I had done so I opened Bootcamp again and ran the 'Restore Disk to Single Volume' program.
Here's the problem. It's been running overnight and I only have a 250GB HDD. The original partition for Windows was only 20GB so I figured it wouldn't take long to fix what I had done. I don't want to force quit, but I'm thinking something just isn't right.
Any suggestions?Looks like just shutting Bootcamp down and doing it again did the trick.

After that I follow this solution
Rebuild using start/end offsets from Testdisk DeepSearch using GPT Fdisk (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/)
Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0

Structure: Ok. Use Up/Down Arrow keys to select partition.
Use Left/Right Arrow keys to CHANGE partition characteristics:

Keys A: add partition, L: load backup, T: change type, P: list files,
Enter: to continue
NTFS found using backup sector, blocksize=4096, 49 GB / 46 GiB
And I have to P :list all MS Data

I currently have a Bootcamp partition (30 Gb or so) running XP pro. I want to switch to Win 7, which I understand requires a clean install since there is no upgrade path from XP directly to Win7. While doing so I want to increase the size of my BC partition. (I'm offloading iTunes and iPhoto to external drives and freeing up 60+ Gb so I can make a bigger partition)
Do I just run Bootcamp Assistant and do the deed as if I were starting from scratch, but specify a larger partition?
The full scenario is that I have an HP laptop running Win7, and XP pro in Bootcamp. I want to swap them. Any advice on the process? Activate/Deactivate/Reactivate dance. I realize this is a Windows question, but someone may have done this before.
Thanks for any help.contrary to kappy, you can buy and use CampTune to resize.
you can't use a HP install on Mac.
you need a retail Win7 to activate on a different motherboard.
Start from scratch. Anything else is likely to have problems. -
Bootcamp Windows 7 partition boot problems
I created a 100gb partion on my Macbook Pro and installed Windows 7. Have been using it successfully for several months. When I went to shut down the other night, Windows wanted to install updates, so I left it and went to bed. Next time I tried to start up in Windows, using option key, startup sequence began with "Starting up Windows" and the icon. After about a minute, the screen went black. Nothing happening, even though I could hear the machine was still running.
Restarted it in safe mode, was able to restore to previously working setup, tried to diagnose the problem with Windows install disk unsuccessfully (unable to operate in safe mode--32 bit). Thought maybe the problem was Windows updates wouldn't install if default startup disk was OSX, so changed startup disk to Bootcamp partition and restarted it. Same black screen after a minute.
Starting in safe mode again, tried to restore previous working settings. Now even that wouldn't work. Still able to see contents of Mac HD, so not worried that it's disappeared. Tried to restart using option key to get OSX, with no luck. It appeared that the Boot Manager had defaulted to the Windows side and wouldn't work with the option key.
Started up with the OSX install disk, using the C key, and was able to boot in OSX. Allowed software update to run, thinking maybe bootcamp driver was the issue. Tried to restart in Windows with option key again, but no luck.
Obviously, I can reinstall Windows 7, but wondering if there's another solution. ??Just an additional note: Apple Bootcamp Support states that, for 64-bit Windows 7, 20 GB of hard drive space is required. I provided 60 GB. What happened to the other 35+ GB of space on that partition...?

BOOTCAMP partition not showing up on Mac OSX after resize
Hello, I have a iMac 27" late 2013 with OSX 10.9.5 and recently I resized my bootcamp partition and reformatted the OSX partition for a clean install. After the formatting, I cannot see or access the Bootcamp partition anymore. I really don't want to have Windows anymore, but I messed up thinking I would be able to recover my files. I tried following these answers but none of them worked for me. Now I can try to boot into Windows, but it gets into a disk error.
- I tried this solution without any success: http://nerdr.com/bootcamp-partition-lost-repairing-mac-partitions/
- I tried LonerT's solution on this post but it was hard to apply to my case: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6574886
diskutil list /dev/disk0
/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
4: Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP 249.0 GB disk0s4
Could anyone give me some hints? I tried following other solutions but I don't really grasp how partitioning works on the OS X.
Thanks anyhowsudo fdisk /dev/disk0

Apparently the Bootcamp partition isn't starting where it should be, since I resized it.

So I was trying to resize my bootcamp partition with Paragon and it was taking forever so I decided to use iPartition the Paragon started doing something and it was almost done when my macbook began to shut down. It was shutting down becuase I though the paragon wouldnt work. Anyway it shut down and I wasnt able to boot to the iPartition CD, so I decided to just screw it and just stick with Mac osx. Then while in the iPartition app once I booted up back into OSX it said I had 217 gigs of free space and my hardrive/mac os partition can only use like 270 gigs. But I desparetely need these 215 gigs back becuase I do things that require alot of memory. Does anybody have any idea how I can rejoin this free space with my mac partition. I already tried it in disk utility and it kept failing with a couldnt unmount disk error everytime I tried to resize back to its full size! PLEASE HELP! Heres a pic of what iPartiton shows me.
You need an external disk that is formated as HFS+ with a GUID partition map.
You can use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to create the clone.
Once ypu have the clone you can boot from my holding down the option key ater power on.
Once booted from the clone open Disk Utility.
Select the internal drive.
Click partition.
Select single partition.
Once drive has bee formated, restore the clone nack with the application used to make the original clone.
Boot from internal drive.

Problems with Bootcamp partition solved using program: iPartition
I Had real BOOTCAMP partition problems:
1. I couldn’t see the partition in the startup list
2. I got an error message “missing operating system”
3. All this was a result of adding an extra Mac partition for Mavericks
4. I fixed it all with a program called iPartition from “Coriolis Systems” in the United Kingdom!!!!!!!!!!!!!Well, you're not alone. Many other users are having the same problem, and it appears that Apple is ignoring the problem. I bought my iMac 27" in June 2010 and installed Bootcamp 3.1 running Windows 7. About every other reboot the gray screen will freeze during bootup and I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes I get the Disk Read Failure. It is very, very frustrating. The only reason I bought the iMac 27" is that I like the look of it and the big screen; I have no desire to switch to a Mac, as I have too much money invested in Windows development software. I've installed multiple dual-boot systems in other non-Mac systems and never had any problems. I hope Apple stops ignoring the problem and comes out with a fix real soon.

How to resize my bootcamp partition without deleting itit
How can i resize my bootcamp partition to make it larger without deleting it or having to reload windows?
Yesterday expanded my bootcamp partition from 50 up to 100 Gb using Mini Tool Partition Wizard Home Edition, a Freeware Windows Program after seeing this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeKeawqxUa0
Note that I have OSX Mavericks, Steps are:
1) backup all your files (optional but strongly reccomended).
2) Using OSX Disk Utility resize MacintoshHD partition leaving unallocated space as much as you need to add to bootcamp partition.
3) Set Bootcamp as Boot Disk and restart the mac.
4) in Bootcamp with Windows running launch Mini Tool Partition and select the bootcamp partition.
5) Choose "expand" option in order to expand the partition using all the unallocated space.
6) The program prompt to you to restart the mac for apply the task, cause is not possible while the partition is mounted and windows running.
7) Restart the mac and then automatically Mini Tool Partition will do the job in a "graphic msdos like" form.
I was lucky and worked for me, I have a Late 2009 Mac Mini with MAVERICKS and a samsung 250Gb SSD Evo.
Hope this can help the community but decline any responsibility, do it at your own risk, you can use programs like winclone or camptune if you feel more comfortable with a pay app. -
"Resizeing" A Bootcamp partition
Hi - a pretty complex question
I know that you can't just resize a bootcamp partition, but I'm wondering if this proposed solution would work so that I could save myself some time:
-Make a disk image of the bootcamp partition and store it on the Macintosh HD using the Disk utility from the Snow Leopard installation disk.
-Get rid of the Bootcamp partition (which currently is a 32GB fat32 partition)
-Repair disk permissions (for good measure)
-Use the Bootcamp utility to create a larger (50GB Maybe) NTFS Partition.
-Use Disk utility from the snow leopard installation disk to dump the disk image of the old partition into the new partition.
Would that Work????
IF so, anything I should Know?
Thanks!Sorry, I just remembered to post the follow up:
I successfully was able to use winclone (http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone) - Thank you very much "Sausage King of Chicago"
Their is one minor caveat. In order to successfully resize the partition, the windows drive MUST be formatted for NTFS (not fat32. Type:
"CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS"
in the windows Command prompt program. (of course, substitute your local disk's drive letter for "C" - mine was "F"
Command prompt will say that it can not reformat the drive, because it would have to dismount the local disk, so it will schedule a boot time re-format. Windows will have to restart twice (for me anyways) in order to reformat, so make sure you hold down option as the computer is restarting.
Once this is done, check to make sure that Windows XP is still working properly, then boot back into OSX.
Once in OSX, use winclone to Image your Bootcamp partition. Save it as a file to the desktop.
When done, remove your Bootcamp partition from the computer (making sure that the image file is still safe!!!) using Boot Camp Assistant.
Now repair your Macintosh HD using disk utility (repair disk). My disk needed so much repair that it told me to start up with my Leopard installer disk, and repair the disk from its disk utility.
Now you are ready to use Boot Camp Assistant to set up a new LARGER bootcamp partition. When you are done, don't go ahead and install windows, instead, dbl click on the image file you made, and when winclone opens, restore it into your new, bigger bootcamp partition. It should work.
Same Windows computer- much more free space!
Thanks for your advice -
Resizing Bootcamp Partition with Camptune
Please advise if you have any feedback -- positive or otherwise -- regarding the use of Paragon's Camptune X to resize bootcamp partitions. There are surprisingly few reviews about the product, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
I recommend it as #1 choice and has been around for years.
One person said it took hours.
Google turns up people with trouble but they also created trouble and had it to begin with.
Backup first.
Make sure your hard drive is ready and has healthy partitions to begin with.
That you have more than adequate space for both operating systems.
that means more than just 30GB for Windows as well as free space for Mac - 20% free after to operate afterwards for each.
The Paragon forums are not that much help that I have seen - rather quiet but I use their other products daily.
If you must, feel free and safe - but make sure to have backups!
And in the last months there is $20 WinClone 3 that I don't know about but has expanded its features and supported. -
Is it possible to resize a OSX partition without affecting a Bootcamp partition?
I have a new SSD drive but its only 120GB. I want to clone the entire drivevbut I cannot do this since my original SSD was 128GB. My OSX partition is 60GB and my Bootcamp partition takes up the rest. I know you cannot resize the Bootcamp partition but could I resize the OSX partition down to 50GB without affecting Bootcamp from booting up? Resizing the OSX partition, I should be able to clone my old drive to the new drive.
It doesn't matter how big a physical drive is. With a Mac partition, it also doesn't matter what the size of the source and target partitions are. The only thing that matters is if the amount of live data you're cloning will fit on the target drive.
Your current partition is 60GB. I would imagine it's not filled to the last byte of space. So as an example, let's say there's 40GB of data on it.
The target drive only needs to be a bit larger than that. Though preferably with a fair amount of free space so if you boot to it, the OS isn't running on a drive with virtually no operating room. So the target partition should be about 50GB.
Unlike Windows, Mac partitions do not dynamically change size to match the source. -
Problem with partition after deleting a bootcamp partition
Hi everyone !
First, excuse my english, I'm from France.
This morning, I've deleted the bootcamp partition I had created weeks ago. But when I've tried to extend the principal partition on the empty space left by bootcamp, the Disk Utilitaire says : "Partition failed : impossible to modify the partition map because the verification of the files system failed."
I tried to extend the partition with the hided partition that we use when we can't boot on the main partition (I don't know how to say its name in english).
If someone have a solution, it would be cool !Back everything up (preferably twice, 3 times for the really paranoid). I would use Carbon Copy Cloner and/or SuperDuper to make bootable clones to external disks.
Test the clone(s) by booting from them.
Repartition the boot disk the way you want it.
Restore your cloned system from the external disk.
