Bootcamp Partition Wont Mount, Boot and Is not Readable
thank you in advance to anyone who can be of support.
I have been running parallels desktop 6.0 on my macbook pro with no issues. I was using bootcamp as my virtual machine. I was also using bootcamp independently with absolutely no problems.
After upgrading to Lion, Parallels no longer worked and I used bootcamp exclusively. Finally i got fed up with having software that I paid for not work and tried to re-configure parallels to work. I erased all virtual machines and tried creating a new one from bootcamp. Parallels changed the name of my bootcamp partition to "disk0s4." Setup did not complete and now i have no parallels. Further, my bootcamp no longer works. I cannot even access the partition. It is greyed out on disk manager. I ran the recovery tool and tried repairing the partition and got the error: "disk utility cannot repair the disk.....reformat."
If anyone can tell me how to get this partition working again, it would be a miracle. However, at this point, my sole concern is somehow retrieving ONE folder that was saved on my desktop in windows that has some very very important documents that were not backed up last night. If someone can help me access those files through the mac side, I would be very appreciative.
I am running Parallels 6.0.12094. I have Mac OS X 10.7 on a MacBook Pro. Bootcamp was running 32-bit Windows 7.
I have posted this in the parallels forum as well. I figured someone on this forum would be more likely to adivse me as to whether I can somehow access files stored on the greyed out partition. thanks.
I have attached a screen shot of what disk utility states. Note it says the drive is formatted FAT (ms-dos?)
Will it run? Yes. You are making some assumptions. There is a thread over on Lion forum and cloning OS back and forth is fine.
The recovery partition is optional .
OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery
OS X Lion: "Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk (volume name)" appears during installation
Partition Lion + Windows
Look at coocooforcocoapuffs
Also, Paragon makes bootable clone drives for Windows (you just can't boot from it on a Mac without it being the internal drive). But that clone requires the entire drive, not just a partition. And not sure what you had in mind. Windows Easy Transfer is for data, not apps, not for Windows OS. But be that as it may.
Clone X 4 can do sector of an entire hard drive and all partitions. Or clone an HFS volume.

Hey all,
Today I resized my OSX partition with the intention of leaving it blank for my new SSD to use as over provisioning space. This resulted in me having 5 partitions on the drive for a short while (which may have caused the issue?). Hereafter, the Windows 8 partition was stopped showing up when pressing option on startup. I opened my bootcamp partition in VMWare Fusion and could was told the drive was unbootable. I used the Windows 8 cd in through VMWare Fusion to run the Auto Repair from the installation CD (probably MBR records and BCD records etc). Then VMWare was able to fully boot my Windows 8 installation without any problem. However, I am still not able to actually boot into my Windows 8 installation as it doesn't show up at startup, and when chosen as target start disk within OSX the computer just hangs on startup before it reboots.
I am considering the possibility of some mis-sync between the GPT tables OSX is using and the MBR records used by Windows 8... I have run a few commands and gotten the following response:

I am have hit a wall in regards to this issue. Why can I boot from my bootcamp partition using VMWare, but not directly from it like when I restart my computer?Okay solution found found a solution finally... i followed the steps outlined in this article: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4144252?start=0&tstart=0 . After i did this my windows bootcamp partition showed up again, but my osx and osx recovery disks became unbootable. Luckily I have an extra enternal harddrive with osx installed on, so ran disk utility and repaired the affected disk where osx had become unavailable. Then rebooted and all disks now shows up and work perfectly again.

my ipod nano 5th gen. wont turn on and is not being recognized on my mac or itunes
What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting? After leaving the Nano to sit and charge for at least 30 minutes, try resetting it by pressing and holding both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear. You'll want to make sure the Hold Switch is not in the On position as well.

'/boot/grub' is not readable by GRUB on boot
I'm installing Arch 64 bits from the August disc, and when I get to the part for configuring GRUB using 'grub-install /dev/sda', it just returns with the message "Path '/boot/grub' is not readable by GRUB on boot. Installation is impossible. Aborting."
Partition layout
sda1 Primary NTFS 24GB
sda5 Logical swap 8GB
sda6 Logical ext4 16GB
free space about 450GB
I've also tried having a separate boot partition, making the boot primary, making my root partition primary etc, but they all produce the same resultYngveM wrote:I had the same error, however when i just waited with the grub installation until after the "arch-chroot /mnt" command it worked like a charm
This seems to describe what some users (including me) are having: The order in which to mount & do stuff:
First: Mount your root partiotion to mnt.
Second: Create all other directories for partiotion (usr, var, boot, home, whatever...)
Third: Mount other partiotions
The problem: Users often create the directories before mounting anything (which cannot work, of course). When using pacstrap it will then create usr, var, etc. and assume they should be on root. My test if I did it right was: After running genfstab check that your fstab is filled with all expected entries. If that worked, your problem should not occur anymore.
Regards,
javex
Edit: Another indication might be that arch-chroot dies with something that says it can't chroot because it can't find /bin/bash or similar shells.

[solved] grub install fails /boot/grub is not readable
virtualbox install
single partition install (well, I have two partitions, #2 is / and #1 is the BIOS partition as defined in the install docs)
when I get to the stage of installing grub, I use :
grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda
which fails with
Path '/boot/grub' is not readable by GRUB on boot. Installation is impossible. Aborting"
it is ext4
fstab looks correct. It shows one entry for
/dev/sda1 / ext4
I am not using UUID although when I did the result was the same.
when run with debug, the problem is
/usr/bin/grub-probe -t fs /boot/grub
results in path no readable.
when I run the grub-probe inside the chroot, I get error: unknown filesystem
haven't had this before. This is the first time I've tried a GPT install.
It is virtualbox 4.2.18

/boot/grub is not readable by GRUB?
During mid installation of grub after completing everything else on the beginners tutorial, the error when trying to install grub using the "grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda" it appears with the error "Path '/boot/grub' is not readable by GRUB on boot. Installation is impossible. Aborting." May be a noobish question or problem, but how can i make the grub installation possible?
It doens't matter where you put that little partition.
Maybe you should try syslinux instead. It is stupid simple... I love it. Grub2 is great if you need to have your boot partition on LVM2 or some other crazy crap. But honestly, I think that 90% of the features are pretty much useless for a user like myself. Though I use LVM2 on Luks on Raid-0, but I keep a separate /boot partition anyway which doubles as my EFI System Partition.
Edit: During the month or so that I used Grub2, I actually upgraded computers during that time. So I had the EF02 partition at the end of my old computer's drive and the beginning of the new one, and both worked no problem.

Bootcamp partition won't boot with two OSX installations
Hey,
I have a MacBook Pro running OSX Mavericks (10.9.5) and had installed Windows 8.1 through Bootcamp and everything worked like a charm. I then added a new partition to install the developer preview of OSX Yosemite. Everything worked, I could boot to OSX 10.9.5, OSX 10.10, both recovery partitions and Windows.
Lately, my Mac had some issues that made me booting to 10.9.5 recovery and using disk utility to repair the Mavericks and Yosemite partitions (both were good, interestingly I could not repair the disk permissions, though) and I even clicked on "Repair", as the whole disk was selected and Disk Utility repaired something (I forgot what it was, but I think it changed the MBR).
Now the Windows partition is gone, when I option-Boot and when I try to reboot from OSX to the Windows partition using the "startup disk" option of System Settings, it says
No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key
I want to be able to boot Windows again (and my OSX partitions) and would love to be able to do so, even when I choose to delete the Yosemite partition once it's out of beta so that I can update Mavericks. I tried using this guide:
Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition
My problem is that it says that the Windows partition should be number 5 on /dev/disk0. In my case, the described partition is number 6.
Can I simply replace the number and it should still work or will it break something that the Windows partition is not at the place it normally is?
Thanks in advanceWell, I just tried it and it didn't work. I still don't see the Bootcamp partition when I option-boot and when I try starting Windows via Startup Disk settings, the screen just turns black after a while and then a white blinking horizontal cursor appears (not even the "No bootable device" error any longer).
Any help would be appreciated. -
Active Directory Replication Servers (wont replicate SYSVOL and NETLOGON Not showing)
I have my first DC Server (DC1). DC1.DOMAIN.lOCAL, I decided to add another Domain Controller. Made it a secondary DNS Server and also GC. Everything seems to replicate, but its missing NETLOGON and SYSVOL Wont replicate.
Windows 2008 R2Errr 5706
The Netlogon service could not create server share C:\Windows\SYSVOL\sysvol\INFGRP.LOCAL\SCRIPTS. The following error occurred:
The system cannot find the file specified.
Event 7009
A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the File Replication service to connect.
Event 1058
The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \\INFGRP.LOCAL\SysVol\INFGRP.LOCAL\Policies\{55DE4000-0D51-44CD-92A1-30F286B2BC86}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until
this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:
a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.
All Critical
This domain controller has migrated to using the DFS Replication service to replicate the SYSVOL share. Use of the File Replication Service for replication of non-SYSVOL content sets has been deprecated and therefore, the service has been stopped. The DFS
Replication service is recommended for replication of folders, the SYSVOL share on domain controllers and DFS link targets.
