Bootcamp Question! From a Converted PC guy

When I go to bootcamp to put windows xp on it, it tells me I MUST print out the directions because i'll need them. I dont have a printer currently. Do I REALLY need to print it out? Or can I just go ahead and click continue? From what I have heard, its really a simple process to put windows on your mac.
Any advice would be great, not really wanting to go out and buy a printer just to print the instructions. Thanks in advance guys/gals.
One more thing, it gives me the option to partition the drive and asks me how much GB I want to allocate to windows. Whats a good number for Windows XP?

Apple writes that on a lot of instructions. You never have to do what you do not want to do. It is just that experience says that when folks just try to remember the steps of a process in their head they often forget something important. It is important to install the Boot Camp partition correctly and then to follow the correct steps to install Windoze on that partition. If you do not do it correctly it can lead to severe problems and really mess up your HDD.

  • A Bunch of Rookie Questions from an old DOS guy

Equipment, brand new iMAC 24" with wireless keyboard & mouse, wired LAN.
I started in the computer world with punch cards and the Microsoft world with DOS 2.0. I now have my first MAC so forgive the dumb questions. I bought a big reference book, I've been through it and the help screens but no luck so far.
There doesn't seem to be any uninstall for software. Am I correct in assuming that uninstalling is simply a matter of dragging the software folder to the trash?
How come the Home and End keys don't seem to work in Mail text on my wireless keyboard?
Why doesn't Searchlight display a "didn't find anything" message?
    Thanks, Peter
    iMAC   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I'll simply add the following regarding software uninstall:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.

  • HT201272 I have recently picked up an Apple TV. When I go to the movies tab, there are less movies available there than there are in my i-Tunes account. I've done some looking around at questions from others, but haven't found an answer that works for me.

I have recently picked up an Apple TV. When I go to the movies tab, there less movies available there than what is available in my i-Tunes library. I have 38 movies showing in my library but only 23 are showing in the Movies tab on the Apple TV. After researching this a little, there are only 23 movies showing under Purchased in the Quicklinks of my i-Tunes account. The majority of my collection are digital copy downloads that came from DVD purchases. Some of the missing movies were added in the past couple of months, the rest are a year-or-so old. I have done some looking around at questions from others, but I have not found an answer that will fix my situation. How do I update my library to get ALL of my movies to reflect that they were "Purchased"(as it says they were in their Properties)?

The pros and cons of to CC or not to CC have been done to death
Its a fact the CC model will work for some, especially newbies and small businesses.
The risks associated with the CC model have been well documented.
For long term users of CS perpetuals its generally a large hike up in cost compared to the upgrade system.
Then there are the....... Adobe can rot it hell...... group who will never subscribe
To each their own, you do the math to suit your cashflow whatever that is and then make an informed decision
To those on the CC model, I'd like to offer some practical advice.........do not allow automatic updates.........make regular backups............develop an exit strategy of alternatives for when you can no longer afford the subscription costs............never ever assume that the Adobe update is bug free
    Enjoy your cloud

Thank you for that post, and the advice. I just happen to be one of those who it does work for. I've been around long enough to know that CC isn't going to work for everyone(the large publishing/radio/web company I work for isn't upgrading to CC because of the costs involved). But it does for me as I potentially venture out into the full-time freelancing world and away from the more structured big office environment. I can't make decisions based on what is best for anyone else, or what will hurt or help Adobe. Just what affects me, and that's all.

  • Question from a Newbie wireless user

Please excuse the naivete of this question. I'm completely ignorant on everything pertaining to wireless internet. My old Powerbook 400mHz G4 Titanium has never had wireless of any kind until this week when I bought a PCMCIA wireless adapter. Never used wireless, don't know anything about it.
I started following the instructions on the PCM adapter this morning to get it all set up. I plan to toggle back and forth between wired internet at home and the wireless adapter when I'm out on the road.
I was surprised when I saw the window where I enter my settings that there were no less than ten different internet services flying around the room in my house! I guess I have a lot of wireless neighbors and I could easily access their bandwidth.
I imagine the same would go when I'm in town sitting in the library. They welcome you to use their internet access, but it's in a busy end of town and I'm sure I'll see numerous services available there too.
So I'm clueless on this topic. Again, I've never used wireless internet before - but I've read about these guys who've been arrested in front of coffee houses for stealing bandwidth at WiFi hotspots when they weren't paying customers.
What's the deal with sitting in your living room and using your neighbor's internet access? I know it's not ethical and we should all get our own, but what are legalities? And say I hopped on to someone's internet access +quite accidentally+...how does one get caught if you do it quietly? And have people actually gotten into trouble beyond these two guys that made national news?
I guess my main question is exactly how careful do I need to be to set the correct access service when there are ten immediately available in a public place? Can I just click on whatever signal is strongest and log on without fear of being caught?
I hope somebody knowledgeable can set me straight on this.
    Thanks.
    -JOHN

  • Opening Images from another converter in ACR

I save the output from a RAW converter like DXO as a dng. It opens in ACR. What would I expect to see?

Yes, I understand the difference, and I know DXO outputs a Linear DNG. I've known that for some time now.
I also know that DXO "actually" applies the lens correction to the image. What do you think I have been concerned about over in the Lens correction Forum and here as well?
I've known that for some time now and have made extensive tests on their output. I started well over a year ago, when lens corrections were only a gleam in Adobe's eye. This has been the thrust of my concerns; that no auto correction be applied in any part of the application w/o notification and the ability to say no. ACR is good in that aspect. In any event, the question posed here is about color correction, not lens. The DXO support person has covered these concerns quite well. He is an engineer, not a sales person. No, he is a physicist, with a PhD. who has explained their typical correction tests as each lens/body combination is characterized.
The question here is based in trying to understand the entire process. Is the demosaicing done as part of their lens correction process? The answer appears to be: No.
Is demosaicing done as part of the color correction? I would expect the answer to be yes, which posed the question, which I will state again:
What would you expect to see if you open a color corrected RAW file saved as a DNG which ACR opens? I see three possibilities:
    1) The file in ACR looks like the file which DXO saved as a DNG  as shown in their viewer. ACR and DXO Look the same
2)The file looks like the nef file, that is, the  DXO correction is stripped. ACR and DXO look different
    3) The file looks weird! DXO looks ok, ACR ???
What would you expect to see? Forget lens corrections.
FYI, Jeff, I am a long time engineer, starting my professional life in 1958 at Argonne National Labs working on Linac instrumentation.. I became a full time Photo Pro in 1974, and in 1998, returned to engineering as a contractor and consultant. My major career work was with Tektronix, which included test and evaluation of lenses for oscilloscope cameras. If I don't understand, I ask. Which brings me to a question from your post: What do you mean by "colors backed in"? I can make a SWAG, but I would rather not.

  • Unable to access the internet on windows xp using bootcamp. I installed the bootcamp drivers ( from snow leopard) but it still doesn't work. I have parallels 6 also installed and IT works fine. I am missing a rtl network adapter-thanksr

    Hi
I have a new 21 inch imac oct 2011 version. I installed bootcamp and windows xp on my machine and i also installed parallels 6.
Paralleles works great and i can open any program with it. But bootcamp also works EXCEPT it refuses to give me access to the internet. I installed the bootcamp drivers from my snow leopard disk, it did not make a difference. All the drivers installed but still no internet. I then installed the bootcamp drivers from the gray mac osx disk (#1) but it stopped installing with an error number ( 2753) and it said that the package was damaged.
I have tried everything; i opened each disk and trieed installing the files separately. Nothing.
What i see missing in my devices screen in XP is the network adapter.
I have a router (dlink-dr615) and it is connected by ethernet to my imac. I wonder if THIS might have anything to do with the problem. Any guidance would be much appreciated.
    Thank you

I'd recommend reposting in the Boot Camp forum, that is where the Boot Camp and Windows gurus hang out.
    Good luck.

  • Why can't I post a question from my new system?

    Hello All:
I was just trying to post a question from my new mbp but it wouldn't allow me to do anything.  It continually gave me a message highlighted in 'red' that i was;t allowed to modify or post anything.  I've been asking questions for quite a while and have never seen this.  I also happen to have my older bmp, also logged onto the 'Apple Discussions' site, open beside me.  Can anyone explain this to me please?  BTW, my new system obviously has Yosemite on it while my older bmp has Lion.  Thanks in advance, to all those who respond.
    Regards,

ChitlinsCC, I'm adding your reloaders to my article on how to make using ASC easier.
Here is my ASC work flow...
    1) I login.
    2) Block the automatic 30 minute logout.
Unless you do something every thirty minutes you get logged out.  The forum software waits to tell you this as long as it can to keep you in suspense  ;-) . Filling out a reply is the exception to the thirty minute window.
            Start an auto reloader.
    Safari = SafariTabReloader
Firefox = ReloadEvery: "Reload web pages automatically"
Others = Reloaders | Cerberus - Support Center
You need to pick a page that will reload over time without stalling out. It's ASC.  I've found my profile display the best to use. I get my Profile page after some  logins.  It's ASC.  Change rccharles to your apple id.
    https://discussions.apple.com/people/rccharles?view=discussions
    Reply technique
Open a new browser window.  Pick some discussion.  Open a reply window.  As long as this reply window is open, you will stay logged in.  The 30 minute times is reset as needed by the ASC software.
    3) I open another window to do my normal ASC browsing.
    4) I have a FireFox bookmark to goto the discussions that I have participated in. I've modified it to add on the content stuff.
turingtest2 recommends. Change rccharles to your apple id:
    https://discussions.apple.com/people/rccharles/content?filterID=participated~obj ecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D
    5) Use turingtest2's generated links with the /content suffix as browser bookmark to the ASC discussions:
Site map of Communities and Categories
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2463
    6) Adjust the ASC web page layout.
    For FireFox
I run with Hiroto's modification to user content.  This is the only way these forums are readable for me.  How to adjust the format and layout of ASC Web Pages:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7501
    For Safari
"ASCPowerTools is a Safari Extension designed to give more control"
    http://www.etresoft.com/ascpowertools
    7) Read and answer my old posts.  I kind of memorize the time I last posted. ( It's way bad that apple eliminated the last poster to a thread. )
    8) I use tabbed browsering.  From a list of discussions, hold down the command key then click on the link. You get two tabs this way. The original window will keep where you have been.

  • HT4818 I have installed bootcamp that worked properly.  Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another OS X 10.8.2 and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. How can I boot Windows again and keep both

I have installed bootcamp by the bootcamp assistant and worked properly.
Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another Mountain Lion System and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. However, Bootcamp still remained in the Startup Disk in the System Preferences. When I tried to boot Bootcamp using the Startup Disk it did not boot and received a message that there is no bootable device. I have not lost any data and can read Bootcamp partition from both OS X systems. Please advise how can I boot Windows / Bootcamp again? Thank you.

Recommendation 1: Use a VM for this. It's essentially a giant C.F. to do this with native booting, and is potentially fragile.
But if you're going to ignore that and do this anyway, realizing that it can break anytime in particular with OS upgrades, and that it's very difficult to impossible to resize the three volumes once you've installed the systems:
    1. create three partitions, setting each to be the size for OS X copy 1, copy 2, and Windows respectively. The Windows partition needs to be set to MS-DOS format (actually FAT32) which later in the Windows installer you'll reformat as NTFS. Do not use Boot Camp Assistant to resize/partition the disk, it simply won't work for this use case.
    2. install OS X copy 1
    3. install OS X copy 3
    4. Use gdisk (available at sourceforge) which is a command line only application, to create a new hybrid MBR adding only the last partition (Windows) to the hybrid MBR and setting it to be bootable. As a concequence you will not be able to see/share either OS X volume from within Windows. The Windows NTFS volume will be visible from within OS X.
    5. Install Windows to the only partition its installer should see (confirm size), you'll need to format it NTFS first, and I suggest using the fast format option if available.

Hi Sara.  Tanks for responding.  If I cannot figure this out (I  was up

Here are two files you can check on/help me with.  When I try again,  it

    Thanks alot
    Waitting for Harm recommend

I concur with Harm's recommendation. The Quadro 1800 is obsolete: It is based on the equally-obsolete GeForce 9600 GT but with only a 192-bit memory bus instead of a 256-bit memory bus. As such, the only memory configuration that was available on the Quadro 1800 was 768MB. Unfortunately, Premiere Pro CS5 requires a minimum of 765MB of free, unused graphics memory just to even enable GPU accelerated mode at all even with the hack. But since Windows itself eats up some of that 768MB, you'd be left with less than 750MB of free, unused graphics RAM with that Quadro 1800. As a result, Premiere Pro CS5 will be stuck in software-only mode even with the hack if you have the Quadro 1800 as the primary card.
