Bootcamp, rEFIt and virtual

I have a MacBook with OS X Lion,
I installed Windows 7 via Boot Camp, added Linux (Backtrack) using rEFIt.
I now access OS X, Windows and BackTrack via rEFIt's boot menu. When I choose Backtrack or Windows I am routed to GRUB boot loader, Windows 7 being one of GRUB's options. If I choose Windows, it boots Windows properly.
problem is I don't manage to configure windows in virtualbox or vmware fusion 4
I tried the solution in http://communities.vmware.com/message/969654#969654, but get stuck while trying to restore windows MBR. The windows install disk says: "this version of recovery tools is not compatible with your install..."

Hi again Alex,
This is just my opinion. rEFIt is open source and one of the main benefits of using Mac OS X is that it opens up access to the vast quantity of open source software and utilities. For this reason, I think that it will not void your warranty. If the situation is such that you need to return your MBP for repairs are you able to revert to the original EFI?
Of course, this isn't a categoric answer and on these user-to-user forums you will not receive a definitive answer with regards to unusual warranty type questions.
Call Apple or pop down to your local Apple Store and ask. Additionally, the "Apple One (1) Year Limited Warranty" details can be viewed in the following link:

  • How to Install Physical and Virtual Host

I am getting licensing issues after I installed Essentials 2012R2 on a physical machine and then used the same license to virtualize it.  It's saying my physical machine needs to hold all the FSMO roles in which my virtual machine is hosting those roles.
I read that Microsoft allows you to use the Essentials license for the physical and virtual server.  Is that correct?
Is there a specific service I need to remove on the physical machine in order for these errors to stop?  I still have the Windows Server Essentials Experience service installed. Is that what needs to be removed?
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Hi Doug,

  • BadRequest: Virtual machines with secondary network interfaces and virtual machines with no secondary network

I'm trying to create an "ExtraLarge" VM with multiple NICs.  The New-AzureVM returns the following error:
BadRequest: Virtual machines with secondary network interfaces and virtual machines with no secondary network
interfaces are not supported in the same deployment, also a virtual machine having no secondary network interfaces
cannot be updated to have secondary network interfaces and vice-versa.
But I have no other VMs.  Or at least I did and then deleted them and all their disks.  The service has no deployments (either staging or production).
Why is New-AzureVM complaining about a mismatch of VMs with and without secondary network interfaces when no other VMs exist?
I have tried many things to fix this, including the deletion of ALL of my resources.  I have deleted and created the service many times, both with an affinity group and without.  I have a screen print of the -debug output if your interested.
    Thanks for the outstanding help.

  • Is there any way how i can download and run Window based games, with out installing Windows-thus Bootcamp? and if so, is it free?

is there any way how i can download and run Window based games, with out installing Windows-thus Bootcamp? and if so, is it free?

No, you must install Windows to run Windows software. You do not need to use Boot Camp (yes, it's free because it comes with OS X.)
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

Storage account is free, Azure charge for storage, if you never store any thing associated to the storage account, that's free.
    So does Vitual network

  • What is the difference between "Invisible" (11g) and "virtual" index?

    Hi
What is the difference between the "Invisible" index and "virtual" index?
    Thanks
    Balaji

Indexes can be visible or invisible. An invisible index is maintained by DML operations and cannot be used by the optimizer. Actually takes space, but is not to be used as part of a potential access path.
AFAIK, a virtual index is created by the tools used in SQL statement access path tuning to provide an alternative for the optimizer to test. It does not take any real space as it is a pure in memory definition.

  • Created second partition in bootcamp Windows and converted whole disk from basic to dynamic

Hi everyone. I don't post here often however I hope the following helps someone else down the road.
I currently user ML and have bootcamp installed. I needed more space on my ML partition so decided to free up space from bootcamp. Going about this completely the wrong way I booted into my bootcamp partition, ran the computer management app and shrank my boot camp partition by 8 GB. This created free unused space which I decided to format over to NTFS with a view to booting back into ML, deleting and adding to my ML partition (how wrong was I).
Prior to completing the format of the newly created free space in bootcamp I was presented with the usual 'yes' / 'no' warning dialogue saying something along the lines of 'formatting this disk from basic to dynamic will prevent any installed operating systems from booting'. I made three monumental blunders at this stage: a) not reading the dialoge box b) completely disregarding the severity of the warning in the diaglogue box c) (you guessed it) pressing 'yes'.
The moment I pressed yes it was the start of a four hour feeling of grief as I thought of the last 6 years of my life wiped from below my nose with no time machine backup.
Upon rebooting bootcamp to get into ML the reality of the situation hit home as no OSX boot, no apple logo, no boot sound, my mac is trying to boot into windows without the option key being held in or warning to present me with a BSOD.
One thought in my mind: "oh Sh*t!!!"
3.5 hours passes and much reading online, learning of linux commands, downloading of linux distros, finding out how to install software and successfully setup a bootable linux usb and I'm typing this up on my mac while I time machine my data away to a freshly formatted external drive. Many lessons learned.
This is what I did amongst the vacating of my bowels and absorption of much nicotine.
There are two pointers to this guide. I was lucky enough to have another computer at hand to conduct the research and create a bootable usb. It a windows 7 toshiba z930. So you're going to need at a minimum: another computer (windows for the guide), a usb stick 2~4GB should be ok.
    1) download a linux iso, I downloaded ubuntu, you can download what ever you like, but you're going to need linux (the rest of my mini guide will use ubuntu 13.10 during examples) http://www.ubuntu.com/start-download?distro=desktop&bits=64&release=latest
    2) download Universal USB Stick Installer 1.9.5.1 (from now on as UUSI) http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Ins taller-1.9.5.1.exe
    3) plug in your usb drive. make sure there is nothing on it that you need to keep as it will be formatted and lost. also plug your mac into a router connected to the internet. this will help prevent any issues with wireless drivers when booting into ubuntu later on.
    4) once the downloads are complete, run UUSI, get past the prompts until you get to the 'setup your selections page'
    5) (A) select 'ubuntu' from step 1. (B) browse to your freshly downloaded ubuntu iso in step 2. (C) tick show all drives. (D) select the drive letter of your usb in step 3. tick we will format *drive letter here*. (E) depending on the size of your usb set some persistent storage - I had an 8gb usb to hand so I set 1GB, less will probably do. (F) double check your settings and click create then let the program do it's thing, it can take some time depending on the speed of your usb drive, mine took 10 mins.
    6) safely remove the usb and plug it into your mac, turn the mac on and hold the option key, once the usb drive is found hit enter and select ‘try ubuntu without installing’
    7) wait for the ubuntu os to load and click the settings icon from the left tool bar
    8) under settings click user accounts
    9) click the + symbol in the bottom left hand corner
    10) select administrator from the account type box and type a name for your account then click add
    11) select the account and change the password, then confirm it and click change
    12) go back to the desktop and select the power off symbol in the top right hand corner and select your name from the list, this will log you out of your current session and ask you to log in under your newly created login
    13) once logged in click the settings icon again from the left hand menu and under settings go to software and updates
    14) in software & updates under the ubuntu software tab tick ‘community maintained free and open source software (universe)’ and ‘software restricted by copyright or legal issues (maintained)’ then click close and close the settings window. Also check at the bottom of this window under ‘installable from cd-rom/dvd’ for two entries ‘cdrom with ubuntu 13.10 ‘saucy salamander’ - uncheck on of these entries if both are the same. Not sure if this was just me or a common problem. I found that trying to do the apt-get update would run into errors at the end if one of the entries wasn't deselected.
    15) hold ctrl + alt + T to bring up the terminal
    16) in the terminal window type sudo passwd root then enter a password for the account
    17) in the same terminal window type sudo -i and enter the password given from step 16 if requested
    18) in the same terminal window type apt-get update and wait for the update to finish without errors
    19) in the same terminal windows type apt-get install testdisk and wait for the installation to finish without errors
    20) in the same terminal window type testdisk
    21) select create log and then the drive you want to work on e.g. your main apple OS hard disk then select proceed
    22) select your file system type - for my ML installation I had to select ‘EFI GPT’ I don’t know if this will be the same throughout all macs / macbooks
    23) select analyse, the step should take less than a few seconds and testdisk may report back errors with the partitions or it may proceed to the ‘current partition structure’ screen. If errors are displayed proceed past them until the next screen.
    24) at the ‘current partition screen’ select quick search, you will have an opportunity to backup your drive here. I won’t go through this step (never learn) as I did not complete it myself
    25) after the searching has completed all the partitions on the disk should be shown. Find your OSX partition using the size reference at the bottom by pressing the up and down keys. Once you have found the partition that relates to the OSX partition that is failing to start hit the right key to make it a primary partition a ‘P’ should show to the left of the partition data. I had to make sure my EFI System and Mac HFS (155GB) partitions were marked as primary.
    26) hit the enter key to continue to the next screen and use the right arrow key to select ‘write’
    27) the program will warn you it will write the partition table so hit ‘Y’ and a confirmation should be displayed that this has been successful.
    28) reboot the computer and remove the USB stick (i removed it at the white loading screen after the reboot, not sure if it makes any difference)
    29) allow the computer longer to boot, mine took about 35 seconds to show the apple symbol whereas it normally took between 3~7 seconds before I destroyed it.
    30) get into OSX and backup everything to time machine or whatever you use then it probably a good idea to kill off your bootcamp install and refresh your mac from the fresh backup.
Hope this helps someone. I couldn’t find anything conclusive on the net when I ran into problems (all my own fault really for not reading the dialogues correctly) however I used bits from multiple forums and found out parts myself especially the linux parts as I don't know the os at all . Certainly won’t be making this mistake again anytime soon.
Well I’ve had an awful night and have work in two hours but at least the last 6 years of my (now backed up) life is intact and in my hands. I’d rather lose a night of sleep than lose all my data.
Sorry if some of the stuff above is wrong as I don't do this thing on osx / linux at all really. At least it might point you in the right direction.

  • Difference between logical and virtual terms

    Hello,
This is not purely oracle question; but in documentation so many times we find 2 terms:
    A. Logical
    B.Virtual.
So what is the principle difference between logical and virtual? As I know physical is that which I can see and touch; while logical/virtual is that is imaginary. We say tablespace is logical not virtual; while Java Virtual Machine; not Java Logical Machine. So I want to know; what is the principle difference; why two words for an imaginary thing. Before posting question; I searched in google as “Difference between virtual and logical” but I couldn’t found the answer.
    Please quote your comments.
    Thanks & Kind Regards
    Girish Sharma

    Girish,
I wont say that I am correcting you as this is like that half glass full/empty thing.May be what I see is half empty , you would see the same as half full.
Well now coming to the explanation.I am saying honestly , I got more confused after reading your definitions. What do you mean by saing that tablespace is not virtual.I see it as purely virtual. We don't say it as virtual tablespace or logical tablespace but it is actualy logical/virtual, having no existance but just the definition right?
How can you say that the size of virtual is larger than logcial? The size of tablespace is actualy the sum total of size of datafiles. So it actualy becomes very larger right?Much larger than JVM which is of few megs only.
The point 3 totally knocked me out.I have no idea what you said.
Ok I tell you this.Just remember the definition that Hans gave already. If you ask me than its the best definition that we can have. Just remember this and if some one asks you more further than give them your point 3 definition and tell them understand this ;-).Please don'tmind I am just kidding. Its just semantics.Don't get lost into it.You will find many people using both the terms interchangibly. So its ok.I shall stick with Hans's defintion, simple and concise. There are lot more other topics to dig upon in oracle.I can mail you lots of them.Spend time on those.Don't think that I am demotivating you.I understand you asked only because you have a doubt. But we got a good resolution of it and beyond that, its not of much use to dig it atleast not in the technial terms.
    Cheers
    Aman....
    PS:Are you on oraclecommunity.net?

  • X-refs and index markers in absolute paths don't work

A problem has arisen that did not exist before:
If I have added files to a book using an absolute path, all X-refs and index markers in those files then don't work. The index *generates* without trouble, but if I then try to Alt-click an item in the index that refers back to a file with an absolute path I get the error "Cannot find the file named X. Make sure the file exists." This also means, of course, that the corresponding hyperlinks in a generated PDF file also don't work.
X-refs and index markers in files added using *relative* paths work okay.
    What is wrong?
    (I use FM9 / Windows 7.)

    Hi Michael,
    Yes, I use 9.0p255.
No, the files don't have to be on different volumes. They can even be in the same folder (not that they are, but they *could* be; they are in fact in separate folders, but on the same volume). What matters is how I select the file in the File dialog box when I add the file to the book. To get an absolute link, I first click the Network button, select the top volume, and then navigate down to the file. The absolute path is displayed in the book window as \\<volume>\folder\file.fm" while a relative path is indicated by "..\..\file.fm".
If I add a file using an absolute path it doesn't work; if I add the exact same file using a relative path, it works.
How do I check the hypertext content in the index?
    Regards,
    - Knut

  • Bootcamp trouble and iMac will not read DVD-R with Windows

    Hi,
I have a late 2011(or maybe early 2012) imac that came with OS X Lion but it's been upgraded to Mountain Lion.. I'd like to bootcamp it and install Windows 8.
I've been trying this for a long time now and then i discovered my imac was not bootable with a usb drive.. Bootcamp restarts and then there is a black which says 'bootable disk not found. insert and press any button' (something like that)... So... i dicided to try with a burned windows 8 dvd-r but when i burn an image to it in disk utility, it says 'medium write error' and the disk pops out... I already have all the windows drivers downloaded.... This is supposed to be a problem with the operating system... As you guys can see, i am having a lot of problems..
    Any solutions?
    Thanks in advance!

I tried using Finder to open files but as they are greyed out this would not work.
That sounds very strange - like it's a disk format issue.
What is the disk format of the Sony DVD+R you are using? (Do a 'Get Info' when the disc is mounted on your Desktop.)

FYI, this is a poorly worded set of possible answers:
    8. How much experience do you have using the following technologies?
I’ve never heard of that technology
I’ve investigated that technology but never used it professionally
I’ve spent some time working with that technology
I am comfortable using that technology
I have used that technology on a daily basis for less than 1 year
I have used that technology on a daily basis for more than 1 year
For a number of these technologies, I've heard of them but have not been inclined to investigate, which seems like it would be useful info to Adobe.

  • Regarding logical and virtual

    Hello,
can any one tell me the differences between logical and virtual.

The meaning depends upon the context in which the terms are used.

  • I shall wait until Kaspersky URL addon and virtual keyboard are available before upgrading. Why not let us see what addons/ extensions are available for each upgrade without having to download each and uninstall again?

I have 3.6. It works fine for me. Kaspersky link filter and virtual keyboard are on the toolbar.
I have upgraded twice now, but each time these and other extensions are not available for the version. So I uninstall and go back to 3.6.
As you are having this spate of upgrades, it would be so much better if we could know what extensions are and are not available before we upgrade.
Why not build the upgrades so that extensions work?

Same problem here too. Curious to see what could be causing this. It has been happening for me for the last two years (South Park). Not too big a deal but it would be great for the auto download to work properly.

  • High Resident and Virtual memory for DBWR

    Hello All
on 64 bit RHEL5 with physical memory of 98gb.
I see in OEM db console for 11gR2 database that dbwr processes is consuming 21gb of Resident and Virtual memory.
There are 3 dbwr processes (all using 21g) running and i see swapping happens even there is not much load on database .
Is it normal for dbwr to allocate such high memory ?
    other memory config
    sga_max_size big integer 60G
    sga_target big integer 39808M
    pga_aggregate_target big integer 10G

    That is an excellent document.
The one thing you have to remember when looking at memory usage of Oracle processes, is they all attach to the same set of shared memory so your values will look high. For example if you assume your sid is XE and run the following command you can get something like this.

Notice how my virtual size is all close to 875Mb for each process more than available with ram and swap space. That is because they all attach to my SGA thus the OS reports the SGA in it's memory listing.
