Bootcamp temperature when gaming

hello all,
ever since i made the switch to mac three years ago ive been worrying about my machine, i know its ridiculous and macs dont break fast but i think ive encountered a problem to actually worry about
i like to play team fortress 2 in bootcamp and speedfan shows me cpu's reach 74 degrees, in osx i rarely get higher than mid 60.
ive tried the input remapper sollution a few google searches reccomended me, but ive been encountering problems with that
so im just wondering if my fear of melting my machine is realistic (yeh i know the mac will shut off when overheating due to security but such temps for long gaming sessions cant be good for the machine)
i run a 3.06 dual core geforce gt8800 machine
opinions are appreciated

In general the CPU running at 74C is not unusual during game play. Though if the CPU is running at that temp then most likely your other internals are getting hot as well. Try installing iStat Pro on your Mac side and check all of your temps: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27037
Also there is a program called SMCFanControl that you can use to bring up the fan speeds. It gets installed in your Mac OS however once you set the fan speeds they should stay that way even when you reboot into Windows. You can even create multiple presets. Lets say one speed setting for regular use then another Gaming setting for when you are going to play games.

  • Is anyone else experiencing higher temperatures when gaming after the SMC update?

I turn off the turbo boost and usually get around 60-63 degrees when playing games such as FC3 and Skyrim but after the update I'm getting around 70-75. I use Lubbos fan control to ramp up the fans to 6000 RPM but still sits at around 70 degrees. Anyone else having the increase temperature issue?

I'm using the stock Swype application that is already on the phone (not from the play store) and it works great with none of those problems.  Not sure if the original poster is using the stock version of Swype that does get updated with these updates, or downloaded another version from the Play Store as Ann154 mentioned.  There is really no reason to download it from the Play Store when it is already on the phone, so I assume they are using the stock version.  Again, I've had zero issues with Swype or anything else with this update.

    Hi rhaughan,
I see that you have concerns about your operating temperature of your computer while using resource-heavy applications such as gaming applications. I have an article that will address some of the concerns you have mentioned:
Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201640
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You should also see this article for even further information about your fans:

  • MSI 970A-G46 with a AMD FX8350 shutting down when gaming of Indexing win 7

    Hallo
I set up a new pc with these components
    MSI  970A-G46
    AMD FX8350
    MSI Radeon HD7750 OC
    Corsair PC12800
    WD 1TB
    PSU 600W
    All stock
    Bios update: done
    Driver update: done
Temperature is bios about 55 Celcius
Now when gaming or doing a speed index of windows 7 the pc shuts of and when it shuts of the front case led is blinking.
The CPU and MOBO gets verry hot.
I have read that MSI claims that the 970A-G46 is not suited for the FX8350 becouse it has 4. +1 phases.
Please help me with this headache

PSU: Recom Power Engine 600 Plus 600W
See here MSI claim (Got it from a forum)
Quote from: from an unknown user post on unknown forum
    Dear MSI,
Thank you for your detailed response to my concerns... I can see clearly now. I only have a couple questions.
Regarding your courtesy "step-up" option: If I choose to RMA my board and pay the difference for an upgrade, will I be required to send in my motherboard first, before you send me my replacement? Manufacturer RMA procedures are time-consuming, and typically span several days, or often weeks before the replacement product arrives. If I have to send in my motherboard first and wait for a replacement, I will essentially be without a desktop computer for that period of time.
This is a serious issue for me. I use my computer on a daily-basis for important tasks. Being stuck without a computer for several days is unfair and unreasonable, given that I'm not the one at fault here. I'm being inconvenienced because of MSI's blunder with this motherboard. This is your mistake, not mine. I hope you re-consider this a little more carefully.
I feel similarly about paying for shipping. Sending out the board on my own dime may not seem like a big problem, but the principle is the same: I'm being penalized for something that is no fault of my own.
Let me remind you that you are propagating false advertising when you say this motherboard "supports" FX-8350 Vishera CPUs. To say that it really "supports" the FX-8350 is being generous; I'm using this CPU/motherboard combo right now, and I can see for myself that the 970A-G46 quickly falls to it's knees when the CPU reaches full load. No other properly-designed motherboard does this. Real-world tasks such as video encoding will use 100% of my processor, thus causing it to throttle. Adobe Media Encoder is not a "heavy burn-in tool"; it is, in fact, a "standard usage scenario" as you put it.
It's the equivalent of selling a car that boasts an 8-cylinder engine, but can only use 2 cylinders driving down the freeway because it wasn't actually designed for that much power. Very dishonest.
At this point you have openly admitted that the motherboard is flawed. I will hold you to that. Your engineers have tested it for themselves, and have observed the CPU's power going over spec, thus not working properly with this motherboard. You can blame the problem on AMD, but it doesn't change the fact that you're selling this motherboard to unknowing consumers, neglecting to warn them about the board's limitations.
Your courtesy upgrade option is a step in the right direction. But unless you can provide me with a more agreeable form of compensation that doesn't make me pay for shipping and leave me without a PC, I plan on escalating this issue.

27" Thunderbolt Display connected to MacBook Air (2011) changes colour temperature when in full screen mode. Switching any setting in System Preferences/Displays changes it back to the correct colour. I have also seen this on a 24" LED Display (Display Port) connected to a Mac Book Pro (2011).

I describe my problem here. I think it's similar, can you see if the console gives you the same error?

  • FX 5700 TD-128, screen goes into standby when gaming

Hey all, recently upgraded to this card and have been having a major issue with it.  While palying games, the monitor will go to standby and to get anything back on the screen I have to reboot.  This can be either 5 minutes or 2 hours into the game.  Not just one specific game either.
    Here are my specs:
    -Windows XP Professional
    -Epox 8RDA3I, Nvidia chipset
    -XP2800+
    -512MB Crucial PC3200
    -40GB Hitachi 7200
    -450W MGE power supply
The cpu stays steady at 50C and the case never gets above 40C when gaming.  Playing Unreal Tournament 2004, I even reduced the res to 600x800 and set the refresh at 60hz.  Using the latest geforce drivers from nvidia.  I suspect the card itself may be overheating even though the fan seems to be working.
I have a day left before I can get a refund from Newegg.  Wondering if I should exchange it or go for a different model.  Thanks for the help

If you are using the MSI drivers try using the latest  nVidia Drivers
You may even have to revert back a few revisions such as the 5X.XX, as the latest drivers are aimed toward the latest VGA cards on the market and sometimes that causes problems for previous gen cards.
If the games you are playing do not require the absolute latest drivers then it is safe to go back and find the best drivers for your setup and configuration.
In that case you can access all the revisions here http://ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/
Overclocking without properly testing for stability can cause problems especially if the AGP bus is being overclocked.

  • IMac 27, i5/i7 - Fan speed / temperatures during gaming?

    Hi all!
This is my first post in this forum. I have searched a lot in the internet, but I have not found any reliable information on this topic.
I currently have a MBP (see signature) and I am really happy with it. However, each time I am playing a game (just casually), the fans accelerate to 6200 rpm within a few minutes which is really annoying (= very loud, high frequency noise). Typical games are Sims3 as well as the Steam games TF2, Portal, and Torchlight. Furthermore, I am playing games like Black&White2, Bioshock or Chess using Parallels 5/Win XP.
I am now looking for an additional desktop computer - and I am loving the idea of buying an iMac i5. However, I would really hate to hear this loud fan noise again... (the alternative would be a Dell XPS 7100, but I really love OS X after 20+ years using Windows).
Thus, I am looking for reliable data (fans rpm, cpu/gpu temperature) during gaming (under steam os x, parallels, and boot camp). Also any experience on long-term reliability of iMacs used for gaming is appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance!
P.S.: Hope my english is not too bad, since I am not a native speaker...

It's a simple match - the more power your computer uses, the hotter it gets, and the faster and louder the fans. The graphics card and CPU are the most power-hungry parts, and are used at a high percentage during gaming.
That said, my current iMac is the i5 (27", 4850) and it doesn't spin up the fans at all playing Torchlight at full native resolution. It does start whirring a little playing Bioshock/Portal/HL2, but not so loudly - the fan speeds go from 1100 (normal, nearly silent) to 1450 or so.
Temperatures I've not followed - but they don't actually matter, just the noise that is made to keep them under control.
In Boot Camp, much the same - although I don't have a fan-speed monitor for Windows, again HL2 would just slightly speed up the fans.
But! I would suggest waiting a short while, it's 10 months since the iMac range was last refreshed so it could be just about time for them to be updated.
ps Your english is perfect, I would never have guessed you were not a native speaker.

  • System crash when gaming (Update: Temperature Problem?)

    Hello there
I have a problem: when starting games (Minecraft, Relics of Annorath, Portal, World of Goo tested) my Laptop crashes. The screen gets black and the only possibility to turn it back on is to remove the battery, wait 10 seconds and then reboot. I don't see any error messages, not in the journal and not in the Xorg.0.log. I have a HP 8470w with a Intel i7-3610QM Quad Core and a AMD FirePro M2000 grapics card. I am running kernel 3.10.10-ARCH with fglrx. Is anyone aware of this problem or can help me even just pointing out where to look for the problem? If you need more info, please tell me.

temp6, temp7, temp8 are strange.... but because it's impossible reach these temps (+127 and +0) I think those sensors are not used or bad report data
if you think it's a overheating problem, you must log temps (sensord+rrdtool)
so you'll get the latest temps before the PC crashes

  • Heat a problem when gaming?

So, I was trying out Left 4 Dead 2 last night in Win7 (Bootcamp). For some reason I felt bad to put my new iMac through such stress and to hear the fans start kicking in. I'm hoping It doesn't hurt it by getting too hot. Is there a good temperature sensor for Win7 that I can download to keep track of it? This computer does stay amazingly cool (right around 32 Celsius) when doing some web surfing in OSX.
Am I just being too paranoid about this? I did notice that the fan noise did decrease after playing for about half an hour. It seems like it did a good job of cooling it, but I'm afraid to push it too far after hearing about all the screen flickering problems right now on these discussion boards. Thankfully, mine hasn't done that yet and I've had this thing for almost a week now. The game recommended a 1080 screen resolution, but I even knocked it down to 720 just to be on the safer side.
Has anyone else done any gaming on the new 27" iMacs? What's a good temperature sensor I could use in Win7?
    Thanks!

I would say, fans kicking in is a good thing! They're doing what they are built for: keeping your system cool. I'd be more worried if I was playing a game and my fans wouldn't kick in
As long as your system doesn't overheat (it'll shut down if it does) the fans will do their job keeping the temperatures well within acceptable range. I don't really know much about the maximum safe temperature, but I trust the operating system and their drivers to keep the system in a safe situation.
You could try one of the programs mentioned above and see how fast the fans are spinning. If the temperature is kept stable without having the fans going on fullspeed, I'd say your system is capable of taking care of things itself As a precaution you could make the fans spin faster to keep it cooler, but I trust my computer to keep itself safe so usually I just leave it as it is.

  • BootCamp Advice on gaming uses and which Windows OS to use.

I am about to purchase a new MacBook Pro 13.3 inch with 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 320M GeForce NVIDEA card, 256MB.
I am going to use it as a hub in university but also I am going to use it as a gaming device. I am using the Mac OSX to run the intensive RTS games (e.g Total War games) but I would also like to know if I can use BootCamp to run windows games on the Mac too, so I can play a wider library (E.g. FPS games also found on the consoles, RPGs and so on).
If this is the case, which windows OS should I use? XP, Vista, or Windows 7, to get the best gaming experience from my specs. Note that price is not a deal-breaker but it is a disadvantage, so if for example XP was only marginally worse than Windows 7, I would probably take it and avoid unneeded cost.
Just as a note, I am unlikely to use Bootcamp for anything else very intensive, just if I have any other compatibility issues with programs I need to run.

    shaun Macdonald wrote:
Supposing I am not going to buy new games but merely build up a library of current ones, is Window 7 64bit worth the price?
As in does it run the games significantly better for any reason? And does anybody know which is preferable when tackling the problem of bootcamp overheating Macbook Pros when playing games?
Sounds like you are rationalizing why you should stay with an older OS. I use Windows 7 64bit every day running in BootCamp for work. It runs quick, is extremely stable (leaps and bounds better than XP or Vista), it is more secure, is easier to network, I never experience instability, and I never have overheating issues. I don't know what running games "significantly better" means. The games will run as they were designed to run.
The advantages of Windows 7 over XP or Vista are well documented. But if you want to stay with an older OS that is your choice. I opted to go with the better OS.

  • Lock ups when gaming

I was playing World of Warcraft (no apologies) and I had my first lockup since OS 10.x came out. I thought it odd but figured I was due. I hard booted my machine and launched the game again. Less than two minutes later it did it again.
I fought with this for most of the night, even trying windowed mode so I could at least force quit the program, but it so locked up the machine I couldn't even do that. Assuming it was a WoW problem I went to their support page and tried all of their software based recommendations, including trashing the program and reinstalling, to no avail.
I left it alone for the night and tackled it again today, all day. I am apparently not the only one having this problem according to the WoW Mac support forums and as is typical everyone assumes it is something wrong with the game. I was inclined to agree since I could do anything else I wanted to do as far as work and Activity Monitor and AHT revealed nothing wrong. At a loss I did more research and have tried the following:
    •Disabling Spotlight with Spotless (Shareware)
•Installing SMC Fan Control (Freeware) and cranking fan speeds up to 1400rpm
    •Putting sound through Built-in Output
    •Removing all unnecessary peripherals
    •Disabled all known startup programs
•Ran only WoW with no other apps running
•Ran every non game app I have installed at the same time (at least 25 including CS3 Design Suite) without locking up
•Ran 30 video files at one time without locking up
Desperate I used Bootcamp and switched over to Windows XP, which I loathe, and went through the 2 hour installation process only to have it lock up while I was waiting in queue to log in to the game (about 2 minutes of the program being open).
I hard booted the machine into Windows again and loaded up Call of Duty 4 and it locked up on me too. So now I'm scared I actually have some sort of hardware problem and while I haven't had any problems with non game apps I'm afraid this could start messing with my work.
Console gives me nothing conclusive though I don't know what I'm looking for. Any help out there?

I find it hard to believe it is an overheating issue when it locks up on login queues. Thanks for the info about Windows but I'm not trying to hard to make things run on that side. XP was just a test.
I have run permission repair using Disk Utility and the Apple Hardware Test, neither finding anything to cause these sort of problems. I'm not trying to spend $100 on something (Disk Warrior) that may or may not fix the problem.
Are there any other tests I can do to narrow things down?

  • Window pop-ups when gaming

I bought a Y50 gaming laptop recently and am having an issue I can't seem to stop. When I am in a game (Team Fortress 2) often the last app I used just pops up and I have to ALT tab back into the game. First it was the Lenovo assistant so I uninstalled it, now it is the news, it seems to be the last web-based app I used.
I can't for the life of me figure out what keys I am pressing to activate it because when it happens I am typically pressing the left mouse button and direction keys (W,A,S,D). Since I used WIn7 prior to this I am guessing WIn 8 has some wonderful function/shortcuts I am aware of that is causing this to happen.
Any insight would be appreciated as this is quite annoying.

Maybe you are just pressing certain key combinations or shortcuts randomly. Check in the synaptics software to disable the touchpad when an external mouse is plugged in.
That is the only thing I can think of right now.

  • PSU causing lock ups when gaming? K9A2 Platinum

I am having black screen and occasionally grey screen lock ups when Im playing games. It can happen within 10 minutes or up to an hour. I have to press the power button to restart and dont get any windows errors or blue screen. I have no issues when watching videos or just tooling around. My PSU is a OCZ600MXSP and Im thinking its not up to spec. I have everything running stock. Is it likely my PSU doesnt cut it or is the black/grey screen freeze thing an cpu/gpu overheating issue?

All of my drivers are up to date (I do use driver sweeper as well). It happens pretty much in all games, from BFBC2 and TF2 to some crappy kid game my son plays online (Wizard 101?). Im not sure what the temps are under load but at idle they are good (cant recall what exactly they were but were in the proper temp range). My monitor has just finally died as Im typing this on my laptop (bad caps on power board  ) so Ill test the temps while gaming when I can hook it up to my big LCD.
Could the lock up with no blue screen/error report indicate a component overheating?
