Bootcamp/Win 7 install on MBA

Are there third parties, like Geek Squad, that will set up Bootcamp/Win 7?

you really a) read the tutorials, and b) think that is too difficult to do or understand and c) need even that to be dumbed down further?
apple error messages if you get one are useless and misleading is all and the software download can be too darn slow
the problem is you will be confronted with having to learn how to change your own tires eventually.
faq, how to, manuals, tech articles: www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
Parallels 7 makes setting up Windows 8 a breeze and downloads the RP for you. But then upgrading from 7 to 8 is also done through a setup wizard
Paragon CampTuneX $20 is the only one I know of. WinClone 3.x $20 is also worth learning how to use.

  • Bootcamp - Win 7 Install goes to black screen

    Hi folks, I'm running a 15" MBP Mid 2009.
    2.8 Core 2 Duo
    8 GB RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 9400M 256 Mb
    OSX 10.8.5
Just this weekend I purchased Mountain Lion and decided to start completely fresh. Used the AppStore download to create a USB boot disk. Removed all existing partitions (Read: used disk utility to erase and format as MacOS Extended (journaled)). Installed the fresh copy of OSX to this new partition. Once in the OS I configured my settings, installed iLife and Office and updated all software. All is well with OSX, now it's time for Windows 7.
I run bootcamp assistant. I resize the partitions such that Windows gets 250GB and MacOS gets 500GB. It prepares a usb stick with support files on it then makes sure it's not bootable. I insert my Windows 7 Ultimate disk and get ready to reboot.
Once I reboot I can hear the disk churning and working but the screen is completely black. Tried closing and opening the lid and nothing. Eventually my only choice is to hold the power button for 5 seconds. I use the option key to boot back into OSX fine and everything is as expected there.
For reference the disk i am using is the same exact disk I had used previously to install Windows to this very machine. I have also tested it on other PC's to verify it is bootable so that may rule out a lot of the common suggestions. I also re-burned the same iso at a slower speed and I'm getting the same results with both disks.
What I've found on the web and/or tried:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173 - Seems to be related to the iMac of the same year. I'm hesitant to install iMac drivers on a MBP. However I have a feeling that the issue might be related.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2600 - Resetting PRAM and SMC did not resolve the issue. Still unable to boot to the Windows 7 Boot disk
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4536 - This described a different problem as I do not have the blinking cursor, however I did try removing the USB drive that OSX prepares but no luck there either.
http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/12275/black-screen-when-installing-boot -camp - References the first 2 KBs I found but the interesting suggestion here was to try a second monitor. The best I had available was a mini display port to VGA and using a VGA-to-DVI cable to talk to my monitor (which has no VGA port). No luck there. tried plugging/unplugging the adapter a few times.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1229631 - On this thread, Post #18 suggests that the new EFI does not allow booting off CD and apparently the USB stick needs to be bootable to make changes to the EFI to allow it to boot from CD. I'm not sure about the validity of this claim but I did download the BootCamp 4.0.4033 for the MBP mid 2009 to try to make a bootable USB - This is on my list of 'to try' items
I knew I was hitting a point where pretty soon I won't be able to self-prescribe the solution so I came to the community for answers.

I have a case open with Apple Support. It is currently in escalation. I will update this thread once I have more information from them.
In the meantime I have tried:
Created a slipstreamed Windows 7 install image with the apple drivers available for my MBP in the bootcamp support files and made both a DVD and a USB install. Both drives are verified bootable, neither resolved the blackscreen issue. Either the graphics driver is not the issue or the drivers I slipstreamed into the install did not work.
Any other thoughts or troubleshooting ideas are greatly appreciated at this time while I wait until Friday for escalation to get back to me.

  • Macbook Pro: OSX and BootCamp Win 7 won't boot

Hi, I'm having a series of related issues.  I've got a macbook pro 5.2 (17", about 2 years old) with snow leopard installed, bootcamped with win 7.
Background: I was logged into Windows playing a game.  System hard locked so I powered down. When I power back on, I get this message:
    File: \Boot\Bcd
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
So, I power down to boot into OSX to see what's up.  This time, I get to the grey load screen and it just sits there and OSX doesn't load. I waited several minutes and nothing happened.  It wasn't locked (the progress wheel was spinning the whole time).  So, I power down, reboot trying safe mode.  It starts booting with the progress bar, but again it never loads.
So, I'm not at this point: I'm able to boot into the OSX installer from the DVD.  In the disk utility, at first my mac partition shows and my bootcamp partition does not, though when I run a verification, the bootcamp partition does eventually show up.  I tried running repair on it, but I get the error that the Mac parition cannot be unmounted (I'm booted from the DVD when this happens).  I haven't run verify on the mac volume only as it estimates 10 hours (trying it now), but I did run verify on the drive and it passed.  I just can't run a repair.
On the Windows side, when I boot from the install disc, it boots into the installer but it can't see an operating system installed when I try to use the repair feature there.  Suggests I get drivers for the hard drive, but I have no idea what drivers I need for that.
I have no other mac to run in target disk mode from.  I have an OSX installation on a firewire drive that I can boot into, but I can't get that to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  I have recent important files on both drives that I would really like to retrieve that aren't backed up.  Most topics I see regarding these issues seem to be regarding external storage disks, or for people already looking to do a fresh install.  I won't say that reformatting and reinstalling aren't an option, but if someone knows a way to get those files off first, I'd appreciate that.

*Take an iMac and Windows 7 Blue screen fun*
the final part of the Win 7 install and Mr Blue screen due to the Nividia driver supplied on Win 7 DVD kills iMac GT7300
    1. Install... and Blue screen!
2.Re-boot but from the Win 7 install disk – seems to work if you hold alt on boot up and select the disk to boot from!
3.When you get into the Windows installer, click past the language selection. Then click "Repair your computer".
4.Windows will scan for installations and prompt you with a list. Select your "C" drive and click Next.
5.You should be presented with a windows titled *System Recovery Options*.
At the bottom of this list you should see +Command Prompt+.
    Select the command prompt.
6.When the console opens, you can delete the offending driver using the following command:
    DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\NVLDDMKM.SYS
7.Close the command prompt window and click the Restart button.
This time, boot from your hard disk.
You will complete the install with no Blue screen.
Having done this go to the Nivida web site and download the GT 7 series drivers for Windows 7.
    Install, re-boot and ...
+*... install Bootcamp drivers and right off your back to Blue Screen...*+
Repeat 1-7 and install newly downloaded drivers and off you go

Almost all AutoDesk apps, except perhaps Sketchbook or Sketchbook Pro have a healthy CPU, GPU and RAM requirement. Especially the GPU. I don't know why their apps have use such a huge load on the GPU, but they do.

  • How do I get bootcamp back after installing windows 8?

    Hi,
I have to admit, I messed up .. big time  :-(
I had a nice working setup with OS X and Windows 7 and bootcamp.
Then I got a disc with windows 8. I installed it, and forgot to use my head!!
It was NOT a windows 8 update dics, so it installed windows 8, disgarding my windows 7 installation.
On top of that I had to delete most of the windows.old folder to get room for new instalaltions of the tools I need in windows 8.
But then I found out that bootcamp was not installed because there was no speaker sound on netflix and eventhough it could recognise that I had inserted a head set ..there was no sound. I couldn't use the FN key no more, bluetooth was dead and I couldn't switch back to my OS X because there was no bootcamp application to help me change back and I can't see the OS X partiion in windows 8.
On top of that, I can't find my !"¤!#"!!" OS X installation discs. Been looking for 2 days now and I'm getting desperate.
Is there anyone out there who can help me getting my bootcamp back on my windows 8 making me able to switch back to OS X and to get drivers installed for all my nice macbook pro devices in Windows 8 ??

The option key is not the command key. Hold Option, Command won't do what you want.
Press it when you hear the chime (not before) release it when you see the Boot Manager.

Not to sound stuffy - but you would do better posting this in the BootCamp forum.
It's not an unusual problem and others have posted ways to fix it.

  • MacOS, Bootcamp, Win-Antivirus and (...User symlinks?)

Hi, I'd appreciate some command line help on this issue:
    My setup:
    750GB HDD with MacOS, apps, and Admin account, and Bootcamp partition;
    2 1TB HDDs RAIDed 0 for 2 User accounts;
Bootcamp: Win XP SP3, McAfee Security, MacDrive (enabling access to MacOS partition from within Win, though not to the User RAID).
    The story:
When I let run McAfee from within Bootcamp scanning for viruses, I discovered too late that McAfee was also scanning my MacOS start-up partition due to its accessability via MacDrive. I immediately stopped McAfee's scan and started up in MacOS. So far so good. However, when I entered my User Account (situated at the RAID0) I discovered that something had happened to my settings.
First, the desktop picture and the mouse settings were set to the default and only a few of the usual User folders were there.
Second: Opening the RAID, the User accounts were still there, but inaccessable from within my (altered) account. Obviously, McAfee had done something ugly to the MacOS, perhaps altering the symlinks to the User Accounts (?) or something else. In the advanced options of the User accounts, the path was listed correctly as before.
Hence, from within the advanced options for the two (external) User accounts, I browsed for the User folders and set them again. This re-definition of the path surprisingly showed up with a number after the path:
    /RAID/Userfolder-1
instead of: /RAID/Userfolder as before disaster struck.
OK, I have again access to the Accounts, but I am wondering if there is an easy way to re-establish the situation as before.
Maybe you also have a hunch on what McAfee might have changed in the UNIX-system or the MacOS? Why would there be this number after the UserFolderName?
By the way, DiskUtility did not flag up any disk problems or permission issues immediately after the "disaster".
    Thanks!

... I should add that after I had re-defined the path to the user accounts, the permissions had a problem. So I ran some command lines to correct the User permissions within each account.

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 install with no Superdrive - Working Method

After lots of experimenting to get Windows 7 installed on my 2011 MBP with no Superdrive, I've finally found a solution.
Normally reserved for Macbook Airs, it's possible to enable the "Create Windows 7 Install Disk" option in Boot Camp Assistant 4 by following this method:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message/17365855#17365855
This will allow usb creation to work, but without proper firmware version on your machine, you will reboot to a black screen that says "No bootable device found" when trying to use bootcamp assistant.
All of the workarounds that worked in 10.6 seem to be broken in 10.7. I tried:
-4 different USB media, as some reported certain USB media will work.
-mounting a VMware image of a windows 7 install, but VMDKMounter and MacFuse are broken in 10.7
-using winclone to restore a previous bootcamp image from my old MBP, which only got me to BSOD
-using my windows image to format a partition, which returns invalid argument errors in disk utility
I didn't try rEFIt, as I read lots of reports of its incompatibilities with Lion, and disk corruption.
The solution that finally worked was to create a 5gb FAT partition on my internal hard drive, and copy all of the files from the Bootcamp USB windows install.
Upon reboot, since it was still attempting the windows install, it found the partition, booted and worked flawlessly. This might also work by simply copying the files from your Windows 7 image, but I think there may be a little trickery done in Boot Camp Assistant to make sure the EFI recognizes it properly.
I've only tried this on my system, but after 2 days of messing around to get this working, I wanted to post my results as I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation.

Ok thanks for pointing out that i need to use NTFS instead of FAT.. And the order of partitions..
    I----------OSX----------I I------Windows----I I---Install---I
My only issue now.. ( atleast i think it is my only issue )
Im a noob at this, so please dont get mad.
But as i understand, you are using the information in this link
    http://discussions.apple.com/message/17365855#17365855
to bypass (Or Un-grey) the "create a usb" option.
Now my only issue is that there is no "create a usb" option, i have
"download the latest windows support software from apple"
    And
    "install Windows 7"
I stuck... ive tried remote disk, rEFIt, installing from usb, installing from dvd.
Dont know where else to go.
Once again, thanks for your help.

  • Bootcamp only saying "install windows 7" , also not working with install disks

i want to install windows 8.1
as u can see bootcamp only says "install windows 7"
i think that i can't do a usb drive install without deleting everything off the only usb stick i have, right?
so i have an install disc instead, like u used to be able to do
should it be working with a disc?
i have a copy of windows 7 as well, so i even tried to install 7 off a disc and this is the message i get when i have either the 8.1 or 7 disc in the drive and i click "continue"
i also figured it would give me the option of how space to allocate before it asked for the install disk

For Macs with built-in Optical drive, you need the Windows installer on a DVD. What year/model is the Mac? (The option to create USB Installer is missing which is also a clue).
The Windows DVD is identified as 'legitimate'. From Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions - Apple Support
Which versions of Windows work with Boot Camp 5.1?
Boot Camp 5.1 supports 64-bit, non-Enterprise versions of Windows 7, Windows 8.0, and Windows 8.1. This version of Boot Camp doesn't support Windows XP, Windows Vista, or any 32-bit version of Windows. Depending on your Mac, you may be able to use an earlier version of Boot Camp to work with other versions of Windows. For details, see the Boot Camp system requirements for Microsoft Windows.

  • Never used Bootcamp- need to install 3ds Max program?

Latest version of 10.5. I have never used bootcamp/fusion/ any windows side of the mac ever. I am now being told I need to install 3ds max on my Mac. Company not supporting the PC side anymore- plus my PC is beat and could not run 3ds max.
Someone educate me about the process? I have not touched a PC in over 10-12 years.
Any tutorials out there explaining how to run bootcamp, how to install the Windows OS?

You need anti-virus software in the Windows system for sure. However, if you're asking whether the Mac system needs anti-virus software, the answer is that it doesn't need it any more than it normally would. The presence of a Windows system does not increase the threat of Mac malware in the slightest.
For more information about the need for Mac malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.

  • Wipe or Win repair install.

    Hello all,
I hame having some problems installing some programs, want to get all this bloat ware off my machine, etc......was told to do a win repair install and someone also said to do a wipe.....not sure what the diff is. Will any of these fix missing or damaged files in my sys32 folder.  I do not mind installing all of my programs again, but I rather not have to install drivers, etc.    As usual, not type of disk was sold with my g570, so I guess I would have to get win 7 from somewhere....do I use my key on the bottom of laptop to somewhere download a new copy?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Is there a step by step somewhere that I could follow.

  • Win 7 install

If I buy a new Satellite laptop with Win 8 installed will I be successful in wiping the drive and installing Win 7 in it's place?

    Hi,
I did that.  Actually, I have my C855 multi-booting, with Win8 (from a Win8 DVD installation), Win7, and Fedora.  I have the C855 BIOS set for legacy mode (not UEFI) and use a tool called Boot It NG (BING) to setup the partitions and for the multi-booting.
Make sure that you use Disk Creator first, to burn the recovery DVDs, though, before trying.
    Jim
P.S.  You could probably use BCD/BCD Edit to do the multi-booting also, I think.
