Bootcamp Win7 - won't boot from Windows partition or even from the Win7 install DVD
Late 2011 Mac Mini / Lion / Win 7 64-bit Home Premium.
Incumbent Windows partition has happily run for heavy gaming (World of Warcraft) for some eight months. Now it stops on boot-up before the Windows logo is displayed, with a very dark blue blank screen. Attempts to boot from the Windows Install DVD yield the same result, portending that there is more than a corrupt MBR at work here. I have reset PRAM and SMC, just for good measure. There have been no recent changes to hardware / peripherals.
Rebuilding the Windows partition with Bootcamp stops at same Dark Blue Screen of Death. Will start Windows sometimes from first switch-on / dead cold Mini, but then not again in the same day. OS X Lion mode runs perfectly, booting up as usual with no quirks or delays.
Hardware? Seems unlikely, except for that suspicion of starting from the dead-cold start.
Do not use a USB3 flash drive. Only USB2 flash drives are supported by Windows installers. Depending on whether your Mac came with a built-in Optical drive or not, you may also need a physical DVD.

Why won't my Intel iMac boot up, either from the internal hard drive or the DVD drive? If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.

If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.

My friend started a installation of Windows Vista, but pulled out after deleting all partitions...
So now i power it on, get a blank screen (seems a bit gray because of backlighting, should show the apple logo right?)...
Then after like 15-20sec it will throw out a:
BOOTMGR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
I have a OEM Windows Vista DVD in the drive, and i know... Windows 7 is better... but i'm not that fond of stealing software from Microsoft and i have 10 licenses for Vista...

Does anyone here have a magic soloution for me, and no i will not install MacOS on it !!!Deleting Boot Camp partitions the conventional way will not work . You must use the Boot Camp Assistant to remove a Boot Camp partition. Here is a link to the guide.

The way to restart is to hold down the option/alt key during startup* and then selecting the Mac OS. If you have a valid Boot Camp install of Windows it would show up during this type of start up.
* hold down immediately after pressing the power button and until the OS choice screen appears.
To summarize.
1 Use the above method to boot into Mac OS.
2 Download the instructions and read them.
3 Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition.
4 Pick your friends more carefully. -
MacBookPro updated to 10.5.6 won't boot from 10.6.3 DVD it came with
I have a clone image 10.6.3 on an external hard drive also, and when I try to select it as the start up drive for a machine that often freezes on start it says it won't bless that drive as a startup disk, and it won't boot from the original install dvd. it's only 3 months old - does it go to hardware repair?
Since your machine is so new, I'd definitely make an appointment at the genius bar and have them take a look at it. It's one thing if it won't boot from an external clone, since there could be a problem with the external drive or how it's set up, but if it freezes and won't boot to the install disc, there's something wrong.
The Apple Store can run a hardware test from their store feed and it just takes a few minutes. That might be a good place to start. Take your install DVD along when you go--possibly it is what has a problem.

My mac won't boot from the hard drive
Hi Everyone
Yesterday, I tried to dual boot my mac using the Bootcamp Assistant. The hard drive partitioned fine & then started the Windows setup. About half way through it found a corrupt file & cancelled the install. It went back to OSX absolutely fine & was working perfectly. I deleted the partition that had been created & then noticed that the amount of free space on my hard drive was missing the 20GB that I had partitioned off for Windows. I used OnyX to try & find the missing 20GB; it finished & then I tried to open Safari & received an error message. I tried again & received the same message so tried to restart the mac & ever since it hasn't wanted to boot using the hard drive.
It will boot from the CD & I can use the Disc Utility to see the hard drive (which makes me think that the mac is seeing it) & can verify & repair both the disc itself & the Disc Permissions but if I click Startup Disc I only get 2 options: The DVD itself & Network Drive. I also can't re-install OSX onto the Hard Drive as it comes up with an exclamation mark & wont let me go any further in the process.
I'm hoping that someone will have an answer other than erasing my hard drive & starting again (which isn't that big a problem as I backed up all the important bits before starting any of this!)Why did you wipe the drive?

If you were those problem may be related to a failing hard drive and that is why the TM backup could be restored.
In you topic header you say the system won't boot from the SL DVD, But it di for you to wipe the drive. Then it should again boot from the SL DVD.
Insert the DVD and reboot, hold down the Option key and select the Optical drive, SL DVD, as the Boot source. -
I wiped my hard drive, but now my mac won't boot from the OS disk.
First it may help to read my previous discussion trying to amend the problem I had there. You can read it here. After that I did some more research and after backing up, I inserted my snow leopard install disk and wiped my entire hard drive using disk utility. Then, using Time Machine, I tried to restore my hard drive from a backup, and it told me that it can't restore from the backup and it gave me this error message (I'm sorry it's so long, I just didn't know which parts you may need and it gave me that entire thing. Also, this website wouldn't just let me attach the document):

Were you having problems?
If you were those problem may be related to a failing hard drive and that is why the TM backup could be restored.
In you topic header you say the system won't boot from the SL DVD, But it di for you to wipe the drive. Then it should again boot from the SL DVD.
Insert the DVD and reboot, hold down the Option key and select the Optical drive, SL DVD, as the Boot source. -
IMac won't boot from OS X install disc!
I'm needing to do some internal hard drive repairs but the system won't boot from the install disc! I've restarted it tons of times while holding down "C" and it just bypasses it and boots right into OS X. It restarts as normal with the chime (I am holding down "C") then the Apple logo comes up, then the spinning circle thing, but it just goes right into OS X. Help!
Let's be sure you are doing it properly.
First, you must use the OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. Carefully check both surfaces for scratches, dirt, fingerprints and if so clean it carefully with a very soft cleaning cloth that won't scratch the disc.
Second, insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when the spinning gear appears below the dark gray Apple logo. -
Portege R100 won't boot from the HDD - missing operating system

I have a Portege R100 that won't boot from the HD, I get the message "missing operating system".
I don't have a compatible CD or floppy driver, I just have a 1.8 inch case for the hd, it works, i also have norton ghost 2003 installed in another computer (a toshiba satellite A45).
I tried to recover the disk using norton and the ghost image in the recovery cds but it keep asking for a password.
I would like to know if there is a way to use the recovery cds with norton and the usb driver and avoid the password screen (or where can I get the password?).

I'm not trying to boot from a USB stick, I'm using ghost 2003, this way when I reboot the USB device is recognized as a second hard drive.
I have the option to use the cds to recover from the ghost enviroment but I would need the gho password.
What I would like to know is if there is a command line to force the cd to ghost the second driver instead of the first.
I'm not a great fan of norton ghost but I don't have another option, all cd drivers that I have are incompatible with Portege R100.

MacBook Pro won't boot from HD or Install CD
I have a 15" MacBook Pro running Lion. It won't boot from the HD or Install CD.
1. When I try to boot it from the HD, it makes the boot sound and displays the Apple logo. The small "working" wheel spins for about 20 seconds, and then gets stuck mid-spin.
2. When I try to boot from the Install CD, I eventually get a gray screen with a large power button image and the text "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button."
I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC per another post, but nothing changed. I have also tried to boot it from an Ubuntu 11.10 CD, which also got stuck.
Any idea what the problem could be and next steps I should take?My Mac started freezing (colored pinwheel) every time I tried using any application (i.e. Safari, iPhoto). After restarting for the 2nd time, it would no longer boot - makes start up sound but gets stuck on gray screen w/ apple icon. I tried resetting PRAM also - did nothing. I decided to reinstall OS; problem now is my HD is nowhere to be found! I am a tech dummy so this is way beyond my comprehension...I'm not seeing my HD from the Disk Utility either???
Side question...I backed up my files (mostly pics JPEG and videos) on DVD (had to compress to save). Why can't I open files on PC? -

I have been trying to install Windows 7 on my macbook pro (mid 2009, MBP53). I have successfully created a bootcamp partition using the assistant. When the computer tries to boot from the windows 7 install dvd, the screen is just black. The dvd spins for a bit, then stops and the computer is just black (no blinking cursor).
Any advice would be very appreciated.

You can use any DVDs that are hardware specific. Only the full non-hardware soecific DVDs work on the Mac.

It won't go to taget disk mode -- I took the drive out and used disk utility to re-partition and format - now I get the folder with a question mark and it still won't boot from optical or usb or go to target disk mode -- I haven't tried installing lion on the disk while it is out and then putting it back in the machine --
according to the serial number, it is still under apple care but since I don't know the person that used to own it I can't get it transferred to me -- or will apple do that since I bought it in an auction?Ok so I've done what you said and this is what it's come back ....

Then the last process says "about to call: reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT).

LCD/Santa Rosa systems won't boot from external drives or DVDs
A critical issue with supporting the LED MacBook Pro systems is that to boot from (or install OS to) any external FW Hard Drives MUST be partitioned with the GUID Partition Table option, not the older Apple Partition Map.
This also seems to impact utilities like Disc Warrior and Tech Tool Pro -- the lastest versions of these will not boot either of the two LED MacBook Pro 15" models that I've tested. (This is confirmed on the utilities websites.)
In short, to boot from an external drive it apparently must be formatted with the GUID option (I have no un-partitioned external drives to test). And to boot from a utility CD/DVD -- I haven't found any discs other than the included Apple Software Restore DVD's that will boot these systems.

Back to the topic -- the LCD MacBookPro models
require the GUID partitioning, and seem to require
something else for booting that Alsoft and Micromat
are working on right now. But for those of us who
make our living supporting macs, working with these
machines may require reformatting of external drives
(you can't reformat just one partition) and not allow
use of our standard CD/DVD bootable utility discs.
You know, you might get a bit more help if your tone was a bit more pleasant. I hope it works out for you.
One might argue that those who "make their living supporting macs" might have done better to keep themselves abreast of what was happening in "Theoryland" some time earlier - say 15 months ago when people first realised that intel macs used the GUID partition system. Then they wouldn't be too surprised. I'm not, neither are the others here who are wading in to HELP.

Why can't I boot from the OS X DVD on my Intel iMac?
I'm trying to boot from the Mac OS X Tiger CPU Drop in DVD that came from the Apple Refurb Store with my Intel iMac.
I have tried holding down the C key on start up and it doesn't work. It boots like normal to the hard drive
I have tried using the Start up Manager, but all it can see to boot from is my installed OS X system on the hard drive and my Windows Boot Camp partition.
The CPU Drop in DVD is all that shipped with my machine. Can one even boot with it?
My problem is Photoshop Elements refuses to start up, giving me EXCBADACCESS and KERNINVALIDADDRESS alerts. It crashes every time about half way through starting up. Trashing it's preference folder doesn't fix the problem. In fact, my Preference folder keeps filling up with folders labeled with jibberish names.
I found a discussion thread that I should boot from the original disk that came with the machine and use Disk Utilities, but I can't even boot from the DVD drive.
What step am I missing?

It's only possible to boot an Intel-based iMac from a grey-labeled DVD, so if you received a black-labeled DVD, someone made a mistake packaging your refurb. The correct DVDs should have been in the smaller box with the User Guide and other small, square documents, along with the mouse and remote. If you find the grey-labeled DVDs in there, just keep the drop-in DVD, they won't need it back since they make them:)
If you don't find them in there, call Apple, or log into your account on the Store page and find your order's link for customer follow-up/issues.

My Macbook has a Kernel Panic when trying to boot from Mac OS Install DVD
It might also be relevant that my Accounts Preference Panel crashes System Preferences when I try to open it. Disk Utility sees no problems with my drive, and booting into single user mode and doing a disk check has no results.
I am running a 2010 Macbook
2GB Ram
2.4 Duel Core Processor
Mac OS 10.6.8
Windows Installed Via Bootcamp, but problems occured before Windows was installed as well.
Anything Else that I need to add?Try reinstalling Snow Leopard. If you continue getting a kernel panic booting from the DVD, then either you have a bad installer disc or you have a hardware failure.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/. -
MacBook won't startup from HD or Install DVD
Girlfriend bought a new (used) unibody MacBook tonight off Craigslist and it won't turn on - Buyer beware... Anyway, here's what happens and what I've tried, either on my own or on the phone with AppleCare.
The seller reinstalled Leopard to it's default settings. First time we turned it on it went straight to a black screen with text that said "No bootable disk available. Please insert install disk." or something like that. (Later, on other restarts, we saw the similar folder with question mark.) Turning off the MB and restarting holding down "option" gave us the choice of choosing startup disk. Choosing Macintosh HD takes us to the desktop and all seems fine.
However, we wanted to reinstall Leopard to create a new profile, etc. Inserting the disk and clicking "Install" prompts a restart. Upon restarting, the MB does not go to the normal install screen, where you first choose your language, but continues to restart and restart. It sounds the normal dong, and goes to a bluish grey screen, but it never makes it to the grey screen with the grey before restarting.
With AppleCare on the phone we tried a lot of things, like restarting holding down "c," selecting the startup disk in Sys. Prefs. then restarting, resetting the PRAM twice, etc. My first AC rep. sent me to a second and we tried a lot of the same things to no avail.
After hanging up with AC, I closed the MB lid and noticed that instead of going to sleep, the "snore" light remained solid and every ten seconds or so the MB tried to wake itself, almost like the continuously restarting it was doing. I let it do this for a few minutes and the MB starting getting quite hot.
Then I tried a couple things. First I replaced the HD with one from another MacBook with the same results. Then I removed and reinstalled the memory DIMMS, thinking maybe something corrupted was in memory (or startup memory?).
So, is there a place where Macs store startup info besides in memory or on the hard drive? It seems like the MB is getting confused or lost trying to find the startup disk.

Message was edited by: Jason Paul1I don't know MacBooks really. Try running Apple Hardware Test by booting from the installer disc with the D key held down.
The Leopard disc either needs to be a retail version (black) or the one that came with the computer originally (gray) and will only work in the model with which it is supplied. Though unlikely, you might wish to double check that it really is the disc for that computer - it has been known before for people to get them mixed up if they own more than one computer.
As I suggested before, post this in the MB hardware forum since they are the ones with MB experience. -
My husband(less technologically inclined than I am), decided to delete programs from our iMac, he turned it off and now it has a grey screen and won't get past it. It won't start in safe mode and when I If I insert the Application Install DVD, to repair the disk, will I loose all my pictures and music?
With a corrupt disk, the install procedure is most likely going to fail.
How old it the disk?
You might be able to reformat it to fix the problem. Of course that means you lose all of your data.
The other alternative is to get a new disk drive and put that in your Mac and install OS X
Then put the old disk drive in an enclosure and see what can be recovered from it.
