Bootcamp with partitioned disk
Hi
I have 3 partitions on my Macbook Pro.
When I try to run BootCamp assistant i get the message:
"tha startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition"
So I guess I can only use bootcamp in a disk that has not been partitioned ?
If so, is there a way I can restore them to a single partition ? I guess that is the only solution ?
From the 'Enlarging a volume' help:
+If you have multiple volumes on a disk and one is running out of space, you may be able to enlarge it without losing any of its data.+
+To enlarge a volume, you must delete the volume that comes after it on the disk, and then move the volume’s end point into the freed space. You can’t enlarge the last volume on a disk. You can see the order of the volumes in Disk Utility by selecting the disk, clicking Partition, and looking at the Volume Scheme list.+
+All data on the deleted volume will be erased. Be sure to back up your disk’s data before you begin.+

I can’t install Windows 8.1 because the Bootcamp Assistant-partitioned disk is GBT and not MBR, and attempting to format the bootcamp disk does nothing. I have read up on this issue, and the only solution seems to be to make a backup of my computer and reformat all disks via 8.1 setup terminal. I REALLY do not want to do that, is there any way to fix this? I’m on OS X Yosemite, if that pertains to the thread.
Interesting. It wouldn’t install because I had FileVault enabled. Huh. Disabling it saved the day.

Problem with partition disk in 2010 MacBook Air
Hello!
I have a 2010 MacBook Air 11-inch and I can't do a partition disk with bootcamp. I have Windows 7 ISO and I have a bootable usb with this. Then, when I try to do partition with bootcamp , it said that I need a remote optical drive. I don't understand, because with my 2009 iMac I can do the partition with bootable usb since bootcamp. This problem is caused by bootcamp program is not well updated or simply, I can't do the partition without remote optical drive?
Thanks for help!Exactly the same happened to me. Yesterday morning I opened the lid of my MBP8,1 (late 2011) on a meeting with a client and It just did not wake up :-/ After forced reboot it would never boot stuck on the same place.
Now what is happening any HDD will be recognized and booted aswell 10/10 attempts but SSD will not boot eventhough I reinstalled it all. The SSD WILL boot in other MBP and is visible on other systems.
The SSD WILL BOOT via USB.
I do not believe the disk is the problem.
My MB was replaced just few months ago. My SATA cable was replaced some time before the MB.

Bootcamp Windows partition disk space
I was in the process of installing Windows for the first time on my iMac. I chose the partition disk size and clicked install. It started to partition the disk succesfully, I didn't see a cancel option so I force quit Bootcamp because I changed my mind and wanted to wait to install Windows. My iMac seems to be ok except that my hard drive has space taken up on it since I quit Bootcamp and stopped the partition. What do I need to delete so I can free up that space? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
Ok, so if you don't see it BCA, open disk utility and see if you see the partition there. If so, try to erase it as a Mac journaled partition and see if DU will let you merge partitions into one - I've only had 50/50 luck here.
If this doesn't work, all I know is to clean install OSX from either USB or internet recovery (command + R). Once there, use the DU option to erase your entire HD to a Mac journaled partition. Good luck. -
Trying to create backup of BOOTCAMP with New Disk Image
Hi.
I am trying to automate backing up my BOOTCAMP partition. I thought automator might do it. I have it done but I have 2 problems.
1) It prompts me for my password before it starts. Other folders don't ask me, how can I stop automator asking me when it is making disk image from BOOTCAMP?
2) I get an error message Error code 28. See below. I have run this twice and get the same error message, same place each time. What is the problem.
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.
!http://www.silverstoneschoolsparking.co.uk/grandprix/bootcamp%20automator%20err or.jpg!Thanks JGG.
However, I see that development of Winclone has stopped which is a little concern.
Also I do not see how to automate it. Is that possible?
Can Winclone be added to Automator somehow, or back to the original question why is New Disk Image not happy creating an image of Bootcamp? I also tried selecting all the files/folders within Bootcamp instead of bootcamp itself, but that also fell over with same error message but at a different file.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner for backing up Macintosh HD on a schedule, but I really want something which can back up Bootcamp on a schedule, or by using automator. How can this be achieved? Thanks

Problem with partitioning - disk permanently falls back to old p-table
Hey Guys!
I'm quite desperate and can't find answers for the following problem - maybe some of you already had a similiar problem.
I want to reuse a SSD that I used on a different machine as primary system drive. It's partition-table:
# fdisk -l /dev/sda
Disk /dev/sda: 119.2 GiB, 128035676160 bytes, 250069680 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x0004f0e5
Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sda1 * 2048 499711 497664 243M 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 501758 250068991 249567234 119G 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 501760 250068991 249567232 119G 8e Linux LVM
There is a LVM volume group with two volumes (root and swap) on sda5. No matter how I try to destroy the LVM setup and the partitioning, it is always "reseted" to this setup.
I tried: lvremove, vgremove, pvremove, fdisk, cfdisk, gdisk, cgdisk, dd from /dev/null, testdisk - with and without reboots, from arch-linux booted from usb and from an ubuntu-live-cd. No matter what, the partitioning does not change.
Why I want to reformat it? I want to use the drive as cache for zfs-on-linux.
It feels like the drive is somehow write-protected.
Has anyone suggestions what to try next? Thanks @ROOKIE
Sadly didn't work either - see below. Underneath I added results of smart-tests - maybe I miss something.

As stated above. I get this when I try to resize my HD. Was having issues with BootCamp so I removed it and got this.
This disk doesn’t contain an EFI system partition. If you want to start up your computer with this disk or include it in a RAID set, back up your data and partition this disk.the same problem...
any help? -
I have a 1 TB Macbook Pro running Mavericks.
My disk is a single-volume...
Here is the information on my disk:
And I'm trying to use boot camp assist to partition my disk, like this:
But when I do, I get this error message:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
It already is a single Mac OS Extended journaled volume. Right? Here is an image from Disk Utility:
Any ideas?Hey there!
It sounds like you are unable to install BootCamp due to an error that your some files cannot be moved, and to format your disk as a single volume, but you have confirmed that it already is. I would verify and repair your disk permissions with the following article next, if you have already restarted your computer and tried again:
Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions
http://support.apple.com/kb/ph5821
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X.Software updates sometimes change a file’s permissions to improve security, so updating your software can solve some permissions problems.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk you want to check. You can verify or repair permissions only on a disk with Mac OS X v10.7 Lion installed.
Click First Aid.
Do one of the following:
Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
Disk Utility repairs the permissions for files installed by the Mac OS X Installer, Software Update, or an Apple software installer. It doesn’t repair permissions for your documents, your home folder, or third-party applications.
If that does not resolve the issue, I would next verify and repair the disk with this:
Disk Utility 12.x: Repair a disk
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

Need help with Boot camp assistant!!! (partitioning disk)
when i click partition disk in boot camp asistan after 5 minuts this message appears:
*+Verification failed. This disk could not be partitioned.+*
+Use Disk Utility to repair this disk.+
anyone know how to fix this??
i really want bootcamp!Yes. Your directory is damaged and needs to be repaired. Boot up to your original gray iMac install Disk but instead of going through the install process, after you select the language go up to the top under the Utilities Menu and open Disk Utility. Select your hard drive on the left hand side and under the First Aid tab click Repair Disk.

Bootcamp stuck on partitioning disk
I've made enought room on my hard drive, and when i try bootcamp, it always gets stuck here
Is it because i partitioned wrong?raghav malhotra wrote:

Yes,
1. clone your OSX partition to an external drive
2. erase the internal drive
3. restore the backup -
When i remove bootcamp. It stuck in Partitioning disk...
I want to remove bootcamp from my mac. When i click restore and it say Status:Partitioning disk and look like it stuck. I wait for it about one night but it still stuck. How can I do?
Can you go to Disk Utility, click on your Macintosh HD, then click on the Partition tab? Select your Boot Camp partition, click the minus button, and then once that is removed drag your Macintosh partition down to where it takes the whole drive.

Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
OS X
Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine

There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays. -
Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged
I was experiencing a problem with my Windows XP installation on Bootcamp. The Windows side kept restarting, and I could not find the reason, so I formatted with the Windows XP disc and tried to re-install it, but it didn't work. I forget the exact error as to why. So I went back to the Mac side and re-formatted the partition sing Bootcamp, and now when I try to re-install the Windows XP on the Bootcamp partition, I get the error:
Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged
What can I do? I don't understand, because this disk has worked before and I am on the mac side right now, so the actual disk does not appear to be damaged. What can I do?Do a full format as it will check for errors and mark bad clusters if it finds any (full format = quick + chkdsk /x ), but only create one OS partition e.g like 30GB or something , this will be plenty enough for the os ,instead of the whole drive . Will save you time .
Wait with partitioning the rest of the drive as an extra partition until the OS is installed using diskmanagement .
Also make sure sata-dma is enabled in bios .
