Booted off Broadband connection with new WRT54g Wireless Router

I recently moved to a new place with Comcast Broadband.  My boyfriend and I both want to access the Internet so we got a Linksys Wireless Router to connect our computers to the broadband connection.  It's not going very well, however, because almost daily we are booted off the Internet.  I called Comcast and they said the Modem is working fine, which just leaves the Router.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing this?
Thanks,
Patricia

How did Comcast determined that your modem is working fine? When you are connected directly to modem , do you have the same problem? because if you do, then it would have the same problem with the router, no matter what you do with the router. Try isolating problem by checking if the connection would drop when you are connected directly to modem.
If through isolation process you found out that modem is stable, there might be a problem with router itself or that the router isn't properly configured, is your computer wired or wireless? how about your boyfriend's?

  • Can anyone help me with my wrt54gs wireless router?

We have the wrt54gs V7 wireless router hooked up to an older HP desktop computer (running on WindowsXP) and have had a work laptop hooked up to the wireless router for 2 years w/o any problems.  We just bought a new laptop running on Windows 7 and although we can see our wireless as an option, have keyed in the Secure Key #, we still cannot connect.  I tried running the Linksys set up cd that came w/ the router to set up the wireless connection on the new laptop and it says the disk is not able to run on the operating system.  I went thru the process to add a new wireless computer from the desktop/using a USB drive to load the wireless app but when I plug in the USB to the new laptop it stops the set up and says the wireless radio is off on the laptop even though the wireless is on.   I am at a loss on how to connect!!    1) how do I get the new laptop to connect to our current wireless router if the set up disk and the USB drive methods do not work?  2) if we eventually get rid of the desktop computer what do I need to do to ensure our wireless connection stays on?
I am ready to throw the new laptop out the window so any help is MUCH appreciated!!

You don't need the setup disk for anything.  Connect with a wired computer to 192.168.1.1username blank, password 'admin' (or wahtever you changed it too).  Now look up your security and enter it into your new laptop.

  • Dial up connection sharing via WRT54G wireless router

Can someone help me out?  Here's my issue
I have an XP based desktop computer that connects to the internet via a dial up 56K modem.  I would like to share the connection with my new XP vista laptop using the wireless adapter on the laptop.  I have a Linsys WRT54G wireless router.  The desktop pc with the connection I want to share is connected to the router via ehternet cable.  How do I go about configuring the laptop wireless & the router to allow for this.   I assigned a static ip 192.168.1.253 to my desktop from the router (192.168.1.100).  When I enable ICS it changes the ethernet to 192.168.0.1.

Your connection download speed should be about the same 8-9Mbits, whether you are wired directly to your modem, or wired through your router .
You said you reset the router to factory defaults and that it was working better.  Did the download connection speed through the router go to 8-9Mbits/sec ?  If it is still 5-6 Mbits, then this suggests that something in your modem-router system is not setup quite right.  If you still have this slow speed problem, then please post the following info:
    1)  Your ISP (internet service provider)
    2)  Your modem model number and version.
    3)  Open your router's setup pages, and go to the Setup tab.  List all your settings in the "Basic Setup - Internet Setup"  section.
    4)  List the operating system (Windows XP, Win 98SE, etc.) on the wired computer that you are using for the test.
After you list this info, hopefully someone in this community will be able to guide you to optimizing your settings, given your ISP and equipment.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless Networking with LINKSYS WRT54GS wireless router

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless printer conneted via WiFi to my LYNKSYS WRT54GS wireless router.  I do not have a USB cable or ethernet cable plugged to the printer.  I am able to use the 'scan to email button' and the 'scan to network folder' button on the front of the printer and I can pint from the PC to the printer with no problems.
I installed the HP printer software from the CD, choosing network/wireless connection, without having to install any USB cables from the PC to the printer in the process.  many posts in the forum mention having to connect USB cables in the wireless installation process.
Can I install the software in the same fashion on the other two laptops? Or, do I need to do something differently?

The USB cable is used on those printers which do not have display or front panel wireless setup is not possible. We configure the wireless settings during install and save those settings in printer's memory by transferring through USB cable. Therefore the USB is plugged in during wireless installation temporarily. In your case I don't think plugging in USB cable is necessary as the printer is already on network and had IP address. Connect the laptops on wireless network and proceed with regular install, the printer should be detected automatically.

  • Does the Xbox 360 wireless adapter even work with the WRT54G wireless router?!!? If so, how???

I just bought a WRT54G wireless router (Ver 8.0; firmware updated to latest).  I have successfully connected my wireless laptop using WEP security, but I'm at wits end trying to get the Xbox 360 wireless adapter to work.  (It worked just fine with my Netgear router until that router recently died.)
When I do the "Test Media Connection" routine (you XBox 360 users know what I'm referring to), the Xbox immediately recognizes the Network Adapter and indicates that it is connected to the Wireless Network, but it inevitably fails the next step in the process:  IP Address.  I have the set-up for the IP address to be assigned automatically by the router (which is set for  DHCP Server enabled).
I have gone around the mountain innumerable times myself and then with well-meaning friends who say try this, try that, try this, try that.  I've had to re-establish my laptop set-up so many times I wanna scream!
Are the Xbox 360 wireless adapter and the WRT54G even compatible?  If so, what am I missing here?  I'm not too technical and obviously in over my head, but this ought not be that hard.
Please, please do NOT respond unless you KNOW the answer!  I don't mean to be curt, but I'm over / past "suggestions to try."
Thank you VERY much for your time and consideration if you can help me.

I don't think that the X-BOX adapter is not compatible to wireless rotuer .... there are few settings you can try on the router ... Access router setup page ... Please click on the tab "Application and gaming" and click on sub tab "Port range forwarding" 1) On the first line in Application box type in "Xbox", in start box type in 88, in end box type in 88, in protocol keep it both, in ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and give a check mark on enable box. 2) On the second line in Application box type in "Xbox", in start box type in 3074, in end box type in 3074, in protocol keep it both, in ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and give a check mark on enable box. 3) Now save the settings 4) Once you return to the setup page, click on the tab "Administration" and disable the UPNP and save the settings. 5) Now assign the given ip address on your xbox ip address :- 192.168.1.20 subnet mask :- 255.255.255.0 default gateway :- 192.168.1.1 Please assign the dns address on the xbox primary dns :- 4.2.2.2 secondary dns :- 192.168.1.1 6) Please try to test your xbox live. Hope it works ...

  • New WRT54G wireless router. Who's the genius that can help me?

I just purchased a WRT54G wireless router. The main reason is my son wanted to be able to use his Sony PSP online. I also have two desktop computers that will be wired thru this router. My question's are. If he is using his PSP online and the desktops are wired, can the desktops be "hacked" if they are on/off? If the router is turned off then the wireless is not working? If I access the router and disable the SSID Broadcast then the wireless portion of the network is off? What are the safest security settings to protect my network?
    Thanks.

    Dead Mans Zone....  I guess.
Using the DMZ is a very simple and risky way to forward ports. The DMZ takes an ip address of a computer on your network, and forwards all ports to that computer. This is really nice if you are having problems forwarding ports for some program. It can be a life saver if your router will not allow you to properly forward ports. It also has a huge downfall. The computer that is in the DMZ is now wide open to internet traffic. Meaning that it will catch virii, and it will be at risk of being hacked. If you put a computer into the DMZ then please install a software firewall to help protect it
Orange/White. The Cisco logo is the Router’s SecureEasySetup button. It lights up and will stay orange when the Router is powered on. The color orange indicates that the Router is not using the SecureEasySetup feature, while the color white indicates that the Router is using the SecureEasySetup feature. When the Router enters SecureEasySetup mode, the Cisco logo will turn white and start flashing. After the Router has generated the SSID and WPA-PSK (also called WPA-Personal) key, the Cisco logo will stop flashing and stay white.

  • Problem with a new WRT54G wireless router

Hello. I recently purchased the WRT54G router to use in my home. Previously I had a desktop that was wired directly into the internet through a Comcast cable modem connection. I got a laptop and wanted to get it online as well, so I got the wireless router. Since installing and hooking up the router my internet on the desktop hangs. I do a bit of gaming, and it seems to come in almost regular intervals where I'll lose connection for one to three seconds at a time. I have the router hooked up such that my desktop is still hardwired, but coming out of the router. I tried to connect my desktop to the router wirelessly to see if this would remedy the problem, but it did notThis is quite frustrating and I've been unable to find anything that may be the cause of this. It also seems to happen on my laptop while browsing. I'll click a link and the browser will hang, unable to go anywhere, then I'll click again and it will go right through. If anyone else has had this problem or knows some way to fix it I'd love to hear about it. Thanks much Message Edited by Pezmage on 02-06-2008 04:49 PM

Try updating firmware. Reduce MTU to 1350, and disable block internet requests in security tab.

  • Having issues with my WRT54GS Wireless Router.

So, I've had this wireless router running for a couple years now and I've consistently had problems with it. One of the main problems that keeps occurring is that I lose connection often. About every 2 hours or so, all devices that are running off of the wireless connection lose connection randomly. All I do is unplug the router for about 10 seconds and plug it back in and everything is fine. Another 2 hours will pass by and then the connection is lost yet again. This cycle repeats itself all day everyday and I have no clue why. Also, while I'm on this desktop computer which is an XP and is wired to the router, I get constant notices that a new device has been detected. While I only have 2 computers connected to the router, it says I have over 15 unnamed computers on the wireless connection. I don't why this is and I really want to fix it. Is there a way that I can entirely reset my router and start the setup all over? What should I do with these problems?

    Is your network secured..?
Make sure that your network is secured and have good security key.Open the router setup page and try the follwing settings.
    - Change the MTU to 1350
    - Change the SSID to some unique name
    - Change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz
    - Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,RTS Threshold to 2304.
    - Set WPA2 Security.

  • Very Slow internet connection with WRT150-N Wireless Router

I have a WRT150-N wireless router hooked up downstairs to the modem and I am upstairs right now with internet that is very slow, it shows it is 18 megabytes/second and the connection says poor (i have a wireless G card in this computer).  I have another computer that is about 10 feet away from the router with a wireless N card and it says that the connection is 160 megabytes/second, but again it is running very very slow.  The third computer is back upstairs by this one and it has a Wireless N USB adapter and is running about 170 megabytes per second.  They are all about the same speed in opening websites but again are very slow to do so.  Any ideas on what is going on or how I can get it faster?

First of all, the speeds you are quoting all sound like Mbps (megabits per second) connection speeds, not data throughput speeds.  You really need to measure your actual download speed to tell what is actually going on with your system.
Use speedtest.net and test your system.  Turn off all other computers except the test computer.  Test under the following conditions:
    1)  connect one computer, by wire, directly to your modem
    2)  connect the same computer, by wire, directly to your router
    3)  connect the same computer wireless to your router
    4)  connect your other computers, wirelessly to the router, one at a time
Also, state the speed that you are paying your ISP for.
Report your download and upload speeds for all of the above tests.
Note that the speed that you are paying for should be about the same as your results from test 1 and 2 above.
After you have done these tests, it will be much easier to tell where the problem is.

  • Having a connection issue with the WRT54GS Wireless Router

We just recently got Broadband internet. We had issues with it at first, because the Ethernet cable included wasn't working properly, and instead, the guy got us connected via USB cable. Now, I just bought this Router yesterday, and made the mistake of unplugging the USB and plugging in the extra cable. I did everything as instructed in the Easylink Advisor program. My connection was messed up, and I could not connect at all. After calling Tech support, they reset our modem and everything (cable modem and internet-wise) is as good as new. I went out and bought a new Ethernet cable, so now I have 2 perfectly new cables, and left the USB cable plugged in, so I don't throw it off as I did yesterday. I still can't get the Port 1 light to come on. the WLAN light is on, as well as the Internet light, but no Port lights will turn on. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance! -Chris-

Are you getting online via ethernet with the modem now? Make sure your local area network is enabled. Go to control panel then network connections.

  • Persistent problems with Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router

I'm currently running Vista with a Linksys WRT54GS router. As earlier discussed in this forum I am still having intermittent problems with the ATV taking down my network. Anyone else experienced this and come up with a sure fire fix?
When it's working I like the set up but I have to say, it is not nearly stable enough to be an everyday solution for getting my music and photos to my living room.
    Thanks.

Hi, I am having the same problem -- my 2WIRE modem from AT&T recently blew up. So, I purchased the WRT54GS. As soon as I reconnected the AppleTV to the new router via a wireless connection, all of my machines (Mac and PC) lost their internet connections. I'm seriously considering going out and getting another 2WIRE.

Thanks for your response Dean!  There is no 'screen' on our printer so I'm a bit perplexed how to do what you have suggested.  On top of the printer, left hand side there are button's for:
    Power
    Cancel
    Scan {USB only}
    Copy Settings x 2 buttons
    Black
    Colour
    Wireless
Basically all we need to know is how to reconnect the Wireless to the new router.  The HP Software is working fine with the Ethernet connected MAC & we have no problems printing directly from that.  Once the printer is connected to the new router the other devices will be able to see it & connect.
    Thanks!

  • Tried to update WRT54G wireless router, upgrade failed, router broken.

I tried to upgrade my new WRT54G wireless router with the new firmware. I got an error message that said "Upgrade are failed". I used the correct version of the firmware for my router (I have a Ver 8). I tried to factory reset, but the router is still broken. Any suggestions on what I could do? I have no firewalls, and it's for sure not a computer related problem. I have tried on three seperate computers. The upgrade failed, it won't let me access the setup page. I have tried to go onto the Internet since, and it lets me, but 80 percent of all Internet sites don't work. This is what shows up in the router firmware page when I go thru the IP. ýýý†††···ÇÇǶ¶¶¼¼¼öööiiiSSS¿¿¿ÂÂÂßßßààà´´´¯¯¯***^^^uuuAAAllØhhÐééé²²²äää–––ÃÃÃBBBâââmmm¾¾¾DDDWWW˜˜˜“““ìììÎÎÎ LLLaaajjÓyyy ¸¸¸ÝÝÝøøøÉÉÉãããÞÞÞ:::×××ÓÓÓkkk’’’nnn™™™³³³©©©ççç œœœxxx~~~ÁÁÁffÍ```ggÍ CCCiiБ‘‘ ŠŠŠ@@@žžž YYYµµµÐÐЪªª¥¥¥??9èèè___ÆÆƉ‰‰ÜÜÜšššÒÒÒ¨¨¨¡¡¡vvváááØØØÙÙÙƒƒƒTTT$$$ÍÍÍŒŒŒÚÚÚÔÔÔ••• ËËËÅÅÅëë뺺º‚‚‚°°°|||}}}jjÕVVV„„„\\\]]]rrrbbÅ??;ŸŸŸ[[¶»»»[[[%%IGGG???eeË£££íí퇇‡fffooÝOO __¾kkÕGGŽ``Á88oddÇKK•CC†hhÏîîî±±±>>|SS¦77mÛÛÛæææpppÖÖÖ®®®ÈÈÈHH êêê??)ÌÌÌÊÊÊÄÄÄ????:llÙZZ²ŽŽŽWW®99q;;vAA‚ÿÿÿffÌ Message The rest of the pages in the setup menu ether show up blank, or give the same message as above.
