Booting from a different partition of an external hard drive

Any chance anyone could offer some advice for my asthmatic iBook G4?
The internal hard drive has given up the ghost.
I have re-installed Mac OS X 10.3.3 on a NEW external portable drive which I have partitioned. I have copied the contents of the farked internal HD - Mac OS X 10.3.9 to partition 2 of the external drive. Partition 1 currently has the re-installed recovery version OS X 10.3.3 on it and is now the selected drive and volume to boot from. However I now want to change the boot volume from partition 1 to partition 2 which includes all the OS updates to 10.3.9 plus all my user preferences, etc.
I have tried everything but to no avail. Renaming the partitions by reversing the numbering has no difference. The Start Menu just recognises the same parition even though it is renamed as other partition and vice versa. The Start Up file in System Preferences won't recognise partition 2, only partition 1 and the farked internal HD. I have tried restarting the iBook while pressing the Option key with and without the recovery disc #1 in the CD drive. No difference.
I am thinking now that the Start Up menu is able to only recognise 2 drives - the internal and an external one which is connected by Firewire 400 port of which there is only one. Or only distinct drives. It can't recognise separate partitioned drives which would be pretty pi$$ poor. There are two other USB ports but I guess these are for other peripherals.
So how can I get my iBook G4 to boot from Partition 2 of the NEW external drive?
Just to re-iterate my iBook boots fine from the NEW portable hard drive partition 1, but this partition only has the OS X system as per the recovery disc.
My Mac is starting to really test my patience.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can I download music and pictures from 2 different MacBooks onto one external hard drive?

I have looked around for the community, but have not found an answer here.  Both my wife and I have 2 seperate MacBooks, but we wanted to put all of my pictures and music and all of her music and pictures onto one external hard drive.  I read on another board that we can, but only if we purchase a Mini.  Is it possible to do that without having to purchase a Mini?  Or is purchasing a Mini the only way to be able to do that?  Thanks in advance for any replies!

There is no reason that you cannot use a common external HDD for your communal data.  Naturally you would have to disconnect it from one MBP and then connect it to the other when you wish to access the data or perform a download.
Any compatible external HDD will do, but make certain that you format it in Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Ciao.

  • Can i make (for example) 3 partitions on my external Hard Drive, and make different formatations for each, so i can share files of one of them in a pc and mac?

    Hello ...
My name is Rui, i'm from Portugal ... (so please be patiente with my english, it can get a bit confusing)
so... first of all ... i have to say ... i'm still a pc user ... i don't have a Mac ... yet ... they are sold out right now in the shops near me ... i am waitting for them to arrive so i can pick up mine ... (i wish in a couple of days i will be entering the Mac world ....) ... i'll be picking the "entery" iMac model, the 21,5'', i5 with 500gb hard disk ... well .. i know it's the cheapest one (i hope it is a good machine tho) ... but it's my entering Mac world too (my only apple products till know were the ipod ...) ... one of my concerns are being the 500gb hard drive ... that for my pc experience is a little bit short ... that makes me a little scared (but paying 300e for the next model to have a 1tb disk, it's not a good option for me right now) ...
    so..
I've been reading a lot about iMac's ans OS X so i can get familiar with this all new world ...
and i couldn't get any answer for some of my doubts... so i decided to ask you Mac Users ..
My idea is to have an external HD to store files (and not to fill the 500gb of the iMac) ... and i am wondering if it would be possible to make this ...
    - make three partitions on the external Hard Drive and
    - the first be formatted in Mac OS extended (journaled) mode
    - the second on fat 32 - so i can store and share files with a mac or pc
    - third be reserved for  Time Machine
i wonder would that be possible... or would make sort of incompabilities ... would it work all well ?
    hummm ...
I hope someone can help me with this ...
... if it is a silly question ... sorry ... but please remember, i've never had a Mac computer (i'm waiting for my 1st iMac to be available on store) ... so a lot of things are "flying" in my head right now ...
... and of course .. sorry for my english ... i hope you all understood me ...
thanks (obrigado) a lot for your patience...

    Hi! Dwagner, once again ...
I've just got my Mac last friday ... i'm still getting amazed with this new world to me ... eehe .. quite different ... but
... "i can do it, i can do it" eheeh
i'm in that period that a new question appears at almost every mouse click ... lol
so ... can you help me (once again) ..
you said you had your hard drive with this settings...
"You can partition for OSX (extended Journal) - read/write by only OSX or read only by Windows via BootCamp
You can partition for Windows (NTFS) - readable by only Windows
OR - you can format with ex-FAT and this is read/write capable for both operating systems."
how did you formated the partition in NTFS ? ... on the mac? using the "disk utility" ? or did you use another program to do so ...?
i hope i'm not "bugging" you ... this might be a silly question for most of people ... but right now ... it's a major question for me ... ehehe
    once again Obrigado (Thank You)

I just bought a mac mini over the weekend. I saved items from my old G4 to an external hard drive. I go to plug in the external hard drive and the new computer is not recognizing it. Help.
Here is the information I have. The external hard drive is a 120GB Acomdata. It has both USB and Firewire. When I go to plug in to the mac mini through USB, it is not being recognized. When I switch to Firewire on the old computer I can see it, however when I go to USB it is not being recognized (even on the old computer).
I'm at a loss as to what to do. Any advice would be helpful.

Have you ever tried the FW 400 to 800 adapter?
I have used them on multiple occasions and they work just fine.
Try this (maybe you already have):
    -Boot Mini with drive disconnected.
-Do not connect drive but turn it on
-wait a few seconds for drive to spin up
-plug cable into the Mini then into drive.
This is an old drive and may have some timing
    issues.
I had an Acomdata drive a long time ago.  It
worked fine with FW but USB was flakey.

  • If I were to drag and drop files from an OSX 9 onto an external hard drive (1 TB), assuming there is still plenty of space left, will I be able to use this same external hard drive to back up my iMac (Mountain Lion)?

If I were to drag and drop files from an OSX 9 onto an external hard drive (1 TB), assuming there is still plenty of space left, will I be able to use this same external hard drive to back up my iMac (Mountain Lion)?  And would it ask me if I want to initialize (thus erasing it) or eject the hard drive like the OSX 9 did?

I was trying to follow this thread because I was curious about the OS 9 installation - until I realized you have another thread going about the very same subject, albeit with a different subject line.
FWIW: it is best not to double post - things get far too confusing after a while.

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

  • Partitions on an external hard drive?

Just wondering if anyone recamends using "Partitions" on an external hard drive?
I have a Apple Power Book G4 w/Mac OS 10.2.8., 768MB of ram, 40GB internal HD and in the middle of installing my new Seagate 300GB firewire external HD. I'm going to be using Digidesign Pro Tools for audio recording/editing, iPhoto, iTunes and iMovie.
The directions for the external HD says I have to format the drive first because I'm using a Mac. I'm just wondering if anyone thinks I should divide it up into partitions and if so, what size for each one? I've heard it's easier to organize/find files by partitioning the drive since it's so big? Is there any pros/cons to partitioning?
The external hard drive also came w/"BounceBack Express" backup software for one button back up. Should I install this software or does my Powerbook already come w/backup software?
    please help
any thoughts would be very appreciated, thank in advance!!

I've experimented with partitioning before and never really seen a perceptible performance benefit. That being said, I have partitioned my 150GB drive because I use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up my Powerbook. By creating a separate partition the same size as my Powerbook drive, I don't have to worry about Carbon Copy Cloner erasing files I put on the drive that are not on the Powerbook's drive.
I only use the second partition to store files that I do not want on the Powerbook drive and the first partition is a mirror copy of my Powerbook. Since you now have plenty of drive space, you might want to consider using a piece of it as a back-up and having one extra partition the exact size of your Powerbooks drive makes sense for this purpose.
Carbon Copy Cloner is a free download too.

  • I am not able to transfer pictures from my Iphoto file to my external hard drive.  When I drag and drop to the external hard drive, I get the universal circle with a line through it.????

For some reason, my computer will not let me drop my pictures from the Iphoto location to my external hard drive.

The drive is formatted for Windows. To write to it from a Mac, you will either have to reformat it or install third-party software to enable writing to an NTFS volume (not recommended.)

WD My Passport 2TB Drive, had to buy a program to make the POS read files. Copies that would take seconds from a Windows based machine never complete. I have to close the transfer or shut off the machine half the time. Literally, my 1997 Compaq was FAR MORE reliable and user friendly.

I have copied things to the hard drive in the past, but it has always been incredibly slow, and now just seems to freeze and fail

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

Strangely enough we can not see you so it really helps if you share with use exactly what you have, exactly what you did and details about the problem
what version of iPhoto and of the OS? What exact steps did you do? where are you seeing these "thousands of cascading photos" now and using what software and what exactly did you want to accomplish
The correct way to move your iphoto library to an external drive is to verify the drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journal) and then drag the iphotl library intact as a single entity to is
The correct way to move some or all of your photos is to select them in iphoto and export 9file menu ==> export  --  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921 ) to the external drive

Thank you for your reply. I'll answer one at a time:
During these times when the computer seems to turn on but doesn't load Windows, do you get any type of image or error on the screen? Nothing appears on the screen at the time of boot. I don't even see the 'HP' logo or BIOS prompt.
Have you tried switching the power cable or testing the power cable in a different wall outlet (especially if it is plugged into a power strip, try it directly plugged into the wall). Yes I've plugged it into multiple outlets with and without surge protection with multiple power cables. The power supply doesn't seem to be the issue as it engages all fans etc.
If you've tried a known good power adapter in a known good outlet, it may be an issue with the power supply or a loose connection inside the computer (RAM, power, video card). I've re-seated all components, cables etc to no avail. I'm reasonably experienced in IT support and have never experienced an intermittent problem such as this.
The PC has been plugged in since I made my original post on 02/23/13. Each day I've powered it up to see if it would boot and had been unsuccessful. This evening, I walked by and hit the power button and instantly the drive 'disk' lights lit up, keyboard and mouse lit up, and it booted successfully (after 10 days of no luck). Now I'm afraid to shut it down b/c I never know when it will boot again. There are no system errors and it's running without any issues - until I shut it down again. The IT support guru's at my place of employment feel like it may be an issue with the motherboard since I don't see a bios prompt when this issue occurs. The unfortunate part is that I bought this re-furbished and the HP 90 warranty has expired...
Any further advice or troubleshooting assistance would be greatly appreciated!!
