Booting from another mac using late 2009 13" macbook?

can this be done? apple made it INCREDIBLY hard to do anything regarding file sharing or alternative booting on this macbook by not having a firewire port and not having target disk mode. i honestly dont know what they were thinking, however, is there a way to boot from another mac (that does have firewire and target disk mode) on the new one?

Target Disk Mode only works via Firewire. About the only option you have is to remove the hard drive from the other Mac and put it into a USB enclosure, then use it for booting. Do keep in mind that this could cause issues as that other hard drive won't necessarily have the correct drivers.
If you wanted to use a different part of the computer, such as the optical drive, you probably need to get an external drive.

  • I'm trying to clone a internal hard drive from another mac using a usb connection.

I'm trying to clone a internal hard drive from another mac using a usb connection to an external drive so that I don't lose the file before reinstalling the software but I keep on getting a message:
    "Restore Failure
Source volume is read-write and cannot be unmounted, so it can't be block copied."
Any advice on how to make a copy of this internal drive?
    Thanks!
....also the internal hard drive i am trying to copying run on a mac os x 10.5 and i'm reinstalling the software because the computer is not starting and only shows a grey folder with a question marks inside.

I've had my Maxtor external OneTouch 250GB for about 18 months now and it hasn't skipped a beat. I have hear of people having their Maxtor drive just up and die but you will probably find that goes for all manufacturers.
By the way, Maxtor is, amongst others, an OEM supplier to Apple.

Incorrect link to "OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mountain Lion and earlier". Should be http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6025

I think the OP is saying OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mountain Lion and earlier (which should be a link to HT4889) just links back to OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks (HT5872).
It does indeed do that, & HT4889 seems to be MIA.

  • How do I remove a disk from my mac mini (late 2009)?

I am trying to regain my mac mini (late 2009) which came with OS X Snow Leopard.  WHY?   Because, after spending quite a few bucks, I have tried and failed to find a suitable substitute for APPLEWORKS.  (I still have the disk)
I erased the Mac Mini's memory, so it is blank READY FOR me to install Snow Leopard. I still have 10.6.3 install disks.
    HA HA.   That's a laugh.
    1) After I put it in the MM,& started it up using my 10.6.3 install disk. The install app told me I couldn't install this system on this computer.  WHY WHY?
    2) Now I have a 10.6.3 disk stuck in the MM and I don't know how to get it out.
    Anybody PLEASE PLEASE !!
(Normally I use a MM (mid 2011) but I want this other MM available to me.)

Dear Allan,  Very interesting solutions to a stuck disk.  I'm going to keep it for future.
I finally did get my disk out - because I started up using my Mtn.Lion BU (it's a Firewire) which I connected to my old MM late 2009.  There she was & I ejected it.
And I did finally get my MM  2009 working again with Snow Leopard - with the great help from ds store.
So now I have my Appleworks back too.   YAH!

  • How do I install Mac OS from another computer using firewire?

My iMac has a bad CD drive but I was told that there is a way to install Leopard from another computer using a firewire connection between the two. I put the install CD in the other computer and rebooted it using "T" (and I see the floating firewire symbol as expected). But I don't see the install disk on the iMac. What's up?

    you can try another way:
connect a firewire drive to the good Mac. Partition the drive and make the second partition as small as you can but at least 8 gigs. Mount he Leopard DVD to desktop. Launch Disk Utility and select that external drive and the restore tab. Drag the source , ie the MacOSX DVD to source window and that second small partition to the destination window. Select restore and enter your password. Wait 30 mins, restore is done. Quit all programs. Unmount that external drive. Connect to the "bad" Mac and restart it from that external drive to install Leopard OSX. You can if you want load most of your software on the first partition of the external and install your software unless of course you did a Time Machine to make it far simpler.

  • HT3986 Mac mini later 2009-- can i install windows 7 -64 bit on it?

    hi there,
can i install dual system on mac mini later 2009?
    windows 7 32bit or 64 bit?
    thanks

Although I have the "Early" 2009 mini, I believe they're close enough.
I have a dual system installed. Mac OS X Mountain Lion and Windows 7 64 bit. I have 8GB of RAM.
You should be aware though that Apple does not officially support the 64 bit version of Windows 7 on this machine, although it seems to be working for the most part using Boot Camp 4.0 drivers.
My only complaint is about the nForce Ethernet Driver. There seems to be some problem with it. Whenever the nVidia Control Panel for video is launched, there is an error reported:
The ethernet itself appears to be working fine using some driver dated back to 2010. While I can go to nVidia's website and locate an updated driver for the GeForce 9400 GPU, I cannot seem to find one for the nForce Ethernet. Honestly, I am not even interested in the Network Control panel, but I get another error when I try to uninstall it.
Would be nice is this could be fixed. Windows 7 32 bit didn't have this issue but I want to run the 64 bit version so I can see all of my RAM.

  • USB install from another mac?

Hi, quick one if I may, I am looking to reinstall snow leopard on a new hard drive so my question is can I copy the necessary files from a friends Mac mini onto USB and boot from there? Obviously I'm not going to do this if it's illegal or whatever, thanks in advance

If you own a retail DVD installer for Snow Leopard 10.6, but do not have an optical drive in your computer, or the internal one has failed, it is possible to use another computer's optical drive to install OS X into a Mac.
    {A copy from another Mac would not be correct or legal, also it likely won't work directly as the Installer puts correct parts into the machine it was installed into, such as hardware drivers, etc. And the disc is a license for one Mac to run it at a time.}
Under this circumstance, there are a few methods of using another Mac to perform this task; one is Target Disk Mode, if both Macs have FireWire &/or Thunderbolt ports and correct cables. Another is to use a utility in the Mac by the name of 'remote install Mac OS X' in the Utilities folder. There may be other similar means, depending on the version of computer and OS X your system(s) are running.
If only parts of the system are damaged or missing, you could use Pacifist utility from charlessoft company to extract the parts you need from a system disc, and it will install them from the desktop of the computer that needs them. The utility is a download and has a demo mode that should work adequately for this task.
You should own the retail DVD 10.6 Snow Leopard, if you have a computer that runs it. The disc (as needed) is proof of the License to use the software. With later computers, the Apple ID and the mac/app store has a record of your activity in regard to permissions of use and end user license.
Sorry to not be of much help.
I have antiques & most DVD media for each system.
And a few clones on external hard disk drives.
PS: Not sure about the copy to USB recovery idea; later Lion 10.7 and Mt Lion
had this, I'd seen info about it online. A cloned system, if your computer had one
could be used to extract or copy parts from. Some don't like drag/drop install.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I migrated a user from another mac and cant get any updates to install!

    Hi
I migrated a user from another mac and cant get any updates to install, for example it says iPhoto is intalled but its not, i never copied it from the older imac, and i cant download it to this one now
    any help appreciated

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • My new iMac hung up during Transferring from another Mac. How do I restart it?

My new iMac with fusion drive hung up during transfer from another Mac.  How do I restart it?

I'm afraid you'll have to power down both, then...
    For the 2 macs...
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Mac Mini Late 2009 - Lost monitor mirror after Mountain Lion Update

I have a mac mini late 2009, mirror to dual monitors was working fine prior to Mountain Lion update. After update I have lost that function. The icon top right is gone. Basic functions like that should never disappear. Please fix on upcoming os builds.
    System preferences Mirror options checked.
I have been running dual monitor on this mac since purchase. Monitor 1 is 24" display, Montor 2 is a 32" 720dpi tv only used for watching videos. This set up has been running well.
The dual monitor function works fine but I never use it that way. I am interested in "mirror" option when watching a video from various applications.
Again this was working fine until ML update.
Any one else experience this issue?

Oh. You are so in jail.
Plug the mini straight into the wall power supply.
You do have 4 - 8GB memory installed, right?
Disconnect everything but power and the display port to regular monitor connection. Make sure that external monitor is switched to the type of connection: DVI, HDMI, VGA. Wrong setting and your mini could be booted up sneering at you from behind a dark screen.
    Boot mini.
    Any change?

  • I have mac air late 2009 model identifier 2,1 running os 10.6. i want to know can i upgrede it 10.8?

i have mac air late 2009 model identifier 2,1 running os 10.6. i want to know can i upgrede it 10.8?

    Upgrading is rather simple.
First you need to enure you have enough free hard disk space. The quickest way to do this is to click on Spotlight (the magnifying glass at the top right corner of your screen) then search for and open an app called Disk Utility. Once Disk utility opens you need to highlight the second item on the left which is called MacintoshHD by default. Then look on the lower right for available disc space is gigabytes. You need a minimum of 8gb available.
Got enough space? Great. Next click on the Apple menu on the top right corner and select "About this Mac" and make sure you are running 10.6.8. If not click software update and install it.
Once you verify you are on 10.6.8 then click on the Apple menu at the top right and select the third item on the list called the App Store. Mountain Lion is on the lower right of the first page that loads. After that you click on the $19.99 then enter you account to continue. I assume you already have an itunes store account so use that for payment. As soon as the charge goes through it starts to download. Its about 4gb so it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours depending on your internet connection speed.
If its going to take a long time you may want to go to the Apple Menu at the top right and select system preferances then Energy Saver on the second line. Then move the slider on the first line all the way to the right so the Mac will not go to sleep during the download. Also be sure to plug in the power cord. Once you upgrade this setting will be retained so when you are done you will need to go back and change this setting, its the same in the newer version.
When its done downloading it will ask you to install. Its pretty simple, you need to enter your Administrator password and agree to the liscense and click next a few times. Be sure to select Macintosh HD and not Recovery HD to install to. I wouldn't imaging the installation taking more than 15 minutes after it is done downloading.
Also if you chose not to install when its done downloading you can do it later. All you have to do is search spotlight for "Install OSX Mountain Lion". The app is in the Applications folder. Also be sure to make a backup before upgrading. It should go through OK but there is always a chance it will not.
    Good luck!

  • Mac Mini (late 2009) won't connect to wireless internet

The strangest thing happened to me just recently, a conflicting IP address appeared on my Mac Mini (late 2009) a few days ago. This IP was from one of my other computers. After this other computer had been shut down ever since, I keep on getting theses window messages saying "There is a conflicting IP tommiller". I decided to restart my Mac mini only a few hours ago. I returned and the message stopped appearing, but now I can't connect to my wireless Internet. An exclamation mark appears over the airport icon in the menu bar. I took forth all the steps to restart my wireless router, but nothing worked. The wireless works fine on all my devices except the Mac mini. What really freaked me out is that I have a portable Verzion MIFI, and my Mac Mini can't even connect to that. I'm very knowledgeable with Macs, but I've never had this happen to me before. My worst nightmare would be that the wireless card is shot. If anyone has the answer to end my stressful night, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Tom Miller

Log onto your router and see what IP address are being used.
Then try setting a fixed IP address well away from any of those, using Network settings in system preferences. See if that solves the problem.

  • How can i share folders at Mac mini late 2009 with Apple Tv 3?

I'm using Mac mini 2009 and I can't share any folder with Apple tv 3...anyone managed to get a way to do so, so far?

I have a WLAN at home conneting Mac mini (late 2009), PS3 slim and xbox 360 in the living room and I would love to share whats on the Mac mini with AT3 in the guest room upstairs, physically it wont be possible to control both screens at the same times. The files I have are on external HD connected via firewire + USB to Mac mini and they are a mix of avi, mp4, mpeg etc. I'm talking about 3 TB of movies and series (its still legal here in Dubai to download ;-)). starting to convert such amount of files its not an option. AirParrot is a good option when I have media stored on my MacBook pro and would like to play it no AT3 but I used Beamer it works great for such function.
    any ideas folks ?

  • How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network?

How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network? Thanks

You can do it manually, but it is much simpler if you use a tool such as Back To My Mac, LogMeIn, or something like that. Those programs enable you to connect to your computer through your router without you having to adjust the router settings manually.

  • Airport Extreme not working after downloading 10.8.3 on Mac Mini Late 2009

I downloaded latest upgrade OS X 10.8.3.  This is onto a Mac Mini (late 2009).  The Mini is hooked up to Cable Ethernet.  I use the Mini's Airport Extreme to use as a Hub for other Apple devices to get onto the internet.  I was enabling this through internet sharing through the sharing tab on system preferences.  it has worked for years.  I have restarted and tried several times.  I do not know what to do .  The names of the computers have not changed.  I am a user not a whiz bang programmer type, it is very frustrating.

    Hi, might try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Try setting up Internet Sharing in the new location.
