Booting from disk or live CD no longer works from this mobo
I think I'm screwed, but I'll post here in case someone has seen this exact problem.
I turn this computer on and off every day. Yesterday I did not upgrade any packages. But when I tried this morning, I saw the Lilo screen and then:
Loading arch
BIOS data check successful
Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok
early console in decompress_kernel
Decompressing Linux... Parsing ELF... Performing reolcations... done.
Booting the kernel.
The initramfs hooks would not run no matter how long I waited. I then inserted a different hard drive where the bootloader installed was Grub, but it also could not load Arch. Resetting the BIOS did not fix this.
I have tried inserting the two Arch Live CDs that I have (one official and one CTKArch). Neither of them can boot even though they have booted many times on this computer previously. The CTK one shows
NMI watchdog disabled for cpu0: unable to create perf event: -95
ERROR: Unable to locate IOAPIC for GSI 13
ERROR: Unable to locate IOAPIC for GSI 8
ERROR: Unable to locate IOAPIC for GSI 1
ERROR: Unable to locate IOAPIC for GSI 12
ERROR: Unable to locate IOAPIC for GSI 6
The only thing that can boot is a Windows 7 PE disc I burned. If I transfer my hard drive to another computer, everything is fine.
Do you think there's an actual transistor that broke on my old laptop? One that is crucial for booting Linux but not Windows? Does anyone have a clue what I might have to solder? The *very old* system is a Thinkpad a22m. The one dangerous thing I did yesterday was apply several patches to my video driver. However, they all seemed to work and it was a DDX, not a DRM.
I would try running memtest, just in case.
If you can boot windows then check the device manager and the error log in the administration console for any hint of hardware with problems. At the same time check the cpu temperature and see if it might be getting too hot.
Check if the bios backup battery is ok, replacing it with a new battery would be ideal. From personal experience I'd say a bad battery can cause weird problems.
There was a similar problem reported before but no solution posted [1], maybe you can try to contact the OP and see if you can find out what was the solution.

SATA DVD RW should I be able to boot from this?
I am having problems installing WinXP. I have a SATA DVD Rom, should I be able to boot from the WinXP CD to load Windows from this or do I need to use an IDE Rom?
Phil...
I'll get there in the endOh, sorry that I didn't write a full name. It's MSI K8T Neo-FSR.
I'm not sure if it's too old, because the drive works with no problems in Windows and even during booting up I can see a text from RAID agent (or something like this, I'm not sure if it's a proper name) that my device is installed. The only thing, which doesn't work is fact that I can't choose it in Boot Sequence :(
Does anyone have some ideas?
I received an answer from MSI Online Customer Service. They suggested me to flash my bios with a version 2.34. Well, it seems to me a little bit suspicious as it is only available via ftp (on a website I haven't found this version). What's more, I am just afraid of destroying my motherboard. Flashing bios is always quite dangerous task. As I believe, you would recommend me doing this with The MSI HQ Forum Flasher? -
In using Mail and moving between my Yahoo emails i keep getting cut off telling me that my present password no longer works. But i have been getting my work done and suddelnly my password no loner is acceptalbe even upon re-entering it many times. This is more than annoying since i transfer files between various Yahoo accounts for my filing purposes. Help me stop this abuse. Please.
Ah yes school boy error there out of frustration and discontent..
My issue is with music/apps/films etc not downloading from iTunes / App Store.
They initially fail and message is displayed stating unable to download / purchase at this time, yet if I retry it says I've already purchased (?) or alternatively I go to the purchased section and there they are waiting with the cloud symbol..
However some items get frozen in the download window and cannot be retried or deleted. Message appears stating to tap to retry, but even if you stole every bath and sink in the uk you'd still not have enough taps.
I post here as the iTunes guys are useless in there 'help' and have only advised posting here or phoning apple, at my expense, to explain a problem that could be rectified by forwarding my original email to a techie. However the tech team apparently don't have an email address as they're from ye olde Middle Ages..!
Anyways I digress.
So I tried sync to pc, but instead of showing the file as ready to listen/use/view, the iCloud symbol shows and I'm back to square one as the item is unable to download..
At frustration station waiting for a train from pain...
All my software is up to date, and had all worked fine prior to the last big iOS update that resulted in all the changes in display and dismay.
Answers in a postcard :-)

Live Update no longer working on iPod Classic
I have "Live Update" selected on many smart playlists on my iPod Classic. The playlists no longer Live Update, I need to re-sync in order to update the playlist.
This started happening around iTunes v11.1. My iPod has the most recent firmware, which hasn't been updated in years.Dear Chris:
Yes, turning off Protected Mode indeed solves the problem!
Specifically, we today (June 9, 2012) installed the new Adobe Flash v. 11.3.300.257 on several Windows 7 PC's, all running Firefox v. 14 (Beta), and none of the Firefox installations would confirm that the installation was performed successfully. For example, the Adobe Flast test/about site, https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about, would not work. And, likewise, YouTube videos and other Flash-encoded videos did not work either.
So, we tried your suggestion to disable the new Protected Mode, and it worked. That is, every single machine on which Flash did not work in Firefox now functions perfectly. So this conclusively demonstrates that there indeed is some kind of bug in the implementation of Protected Mode.
Can you please let me and the other Adobe users know when this is fixed. Thanks.
Also, could you likewise let us know the risks of turning of Protected Mode (although we really don't have any choice, as Flash will not work on Firefox with PM turned on).
Thank you. Much appreciated.
Kind regards,

"Mac OS X cannot boot from this volume"
Got a new 120 GB IDE hard drive for my girlfriend's eMac, but the installer is insisting that the operating system can't be installed onto it. Like, this stop sign on the icon of the HD with an exclamation point in it. I really don't want to crack the thing open again just to try it, but maybe the jumper block is in the wrong place? Any help is GREATLY appreciated as I am nearing lividness. Thank you!
Only other thing that comes to mind is - what eMac does GF have? Perhaps the earlier models can't handle 120GB? (Stretching here)
Looks like you may be delving back inside the shell... Has GF got long skinny fingers? I know I needed my fiancée's for that power button cable!

I'm using Windows 7, 64-bit version. The problem did not show up until a few weeks ago. I've also tried all the things that Firefox suggested to do, but no change.

Firefox is not longer working since this morning's update - problem ?
Using Windows 7 pro with Kaspersky anti-virus. All I had this morning when opening firefox was a blurred outside screen with no data in the middle box area. Nothing works but the min/max/close in the upper right corner. Clicking on the firefox icon there is message "under construction". I've uninstalled and downloaded severakl time but get the same non-working screen. How can I be sure the old defective firefox is gone and that I'm downloading a new copy ?
hello, other users with this problem all had an embedded intel hd graphics card with an old driver present. in case this also applies to you, here would be a link to update the driver, which in turn should also address the black firefox problem.
* Intel HD 2000/3000: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764 (for win7 64bit)
* Intel HD 4000: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24329 (for win7 64bit)

in case this doesn't solve the issue or does not apply to your system, start firefox into safemode '''by pressing the shift key while the application is launching''' & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

Mac Mini Will not boot from external drive or install disk
Hi,
I just bought a new 2.0 ghz mac mini 1 gb ram. 120gb hdd.
I have a separate external HDD attached and wanted to boot from this. It works with my MBP and IMAC.
When i plug it into the Mac Mini and start up with Option key. It recognizes it.
I then click on it. It automatically reboots.... then grey screen comes on. It goes black after about 10 seconds. then boots into original operating system.
I also tried to use the MAC install Disk, thinking it might be a corruption in the shipped software. It does the same thing.
I have MAC Install DVD on an external drive too. Same issue.
I partitioned the HDD and installed a copy of the Mac install disk onto that with disk utility... Same thing grey screen, then black then back to original operating system.
Not sure what is going on?
thanks
ChrisHi,
Thanks.
It is running 10.5.8.
I am trying to boot up an external drive with 10.5.8 on it. It works on my Macbook Pro which is running 10.5.8, runs on my IMAC running SL. But doesnt work on the mac mini?
It had been running SL, however there are a number of programs I have like Windows Live Sync which are not yet compatable with SL so i downgraded to 10.5.6 which came with the Mac Mini then loaded all updates.
It seems to just go into an auto reboot as soon as i click on it.
i thought it might be the firmware? Is it possible to downgrade them and then re-install?
I have reset the PRAM.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks -
Booting from external Hard Disk
I just got a portable usb 2.0 160gb hard disk, and I want to boot from it on a different computer. I used SuperDuper! to clone my hard drive, but Leopard won't recognize it as a bootable disk. Is there a way to boot from this disk?
Same problem here.
Booted up using an external USB drive running Mac OS X 10.4.9 (or is it .11 now?), and it worked great the first time, but after that it will no longer see it. Wish I hadn't made two partitions now, but I'll just delete the OS installation and use that partition for other unique items. -
Not supported hardware to boot from disk
Hi everybody
I have a problem by installing windows vista ultimate on my mac pro. All four disk bays contain the same harddrive (Samsung HD501LJ). Bay 1+2 are configured in a RAID0 array,. Bay3 is a native disk for windows and bay4 is used for the new timemachine feature under Mac OS X Leopard.
I have partitioned the drive with "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)" and set up a second parition with boot camp assistent for windows vista (MS-DOS; 32GB).
In the windows installation wizard, the partition was recognized as "Drive 3, Parition 2 - BOOTCAMP). To boot from this disk, windows vista needs NTFS formatting, so I have run the "Format" Wizard, which was successful.
After this step, the setup returns the following error:
"This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers's BIOS menu."
"Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation."
Anybody an idea, what's going wrong here? Thanks for you reply.
I have also tried to install windows vista on a single partition/harddrive. Bootcamp fromats the drive with FAT32, the vista installer do the rest and format the drive with NTFS. The result is the same. Diskspace is now 450gb (hole disk)
Could it be, that the raid0 array for my os x 10.5 make troubles? The drive on which I want to install windows, is not in this raid0 array!
Or do I have to install 64bit-os-version for my mac pro? (xeon 64bit cpus) -
G5 wont boot from installation disk?
Any suggestions for a G5 that wont boot from the installation CD? Regular starts fail at the grey screen with the apple logo. I've re-set PRAM and SMU, and replaced the battery. G5 passed the Disk Utility tests and the hardware test run over firewire from a PowerBook. I've tried booting from the CD while holding down the various keys. Runs fine in terminal mode so I've saved all my files. Not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi choriocapillaris, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Can we assume it booted from this Install Disc before, or could this be an Install Disc from another Mac?
If it is the right Disc, put it in the PB, boot the PB into Target mode...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Boot the G5 with the Option key held down & see if the Install Disc in the PB eventually shows up as a boot choice for the G5. -
Problems in booting from Firewire disk
I had an iMac 400 G3 until recently, just got a mini Core Duo 1.66.
My Firewire 120 GB disk was always the main disk, but now I cannot install the Tiger disk that came with the Mac mini on it (it says my Mac cannot boot from this volume), even though it recognizes the disk just fine when I boot from the Mini's HD.
Maybe it's the system in it, since it has the 10.4.8. with PPC updates? Should I erase the system from my disk and try to install OS X on it?
Thanks a lot.The simplest way to do this is to connect your external drive to the mini and copy all your data from it to the mini's internal drive. Don't copy applications or MacOS, just the documents and files, video, music etc. Then use Disk Utilities (in Applications/utilities) to reformat the external.
Download and install a copy of CarbonCopyCloner (from www.versiontracker.com) and use it to copy the internal drive to the external.
Then open System Preferences/Startup Disk and set the external as the startup volume. Reboot and the system should then boot to the external which has a fully compatible copy of MacOS, complete with your documents, files, music etc.
The startup Disk preference pane can then be used to switch back to the internal if you should need to do so.
