Booting from external, need to stop bad internal drive from trying to mount

I have an Intel iMac with a bad internal drive. It won't mount, but makes several clicks every few seconds trying to access the drive. Eventually I will take it in for repair, but I don't want to be without it for several days and it is working fine with the external drive.
It's not a huge problem, but the clicking gets annoying. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can disable the drive or prevent the computer from trying to access it? I don't want to physically disable it unless it is a simple procedure. I'm hoping there is a software solution via OS X or Terminal commands.
I should say that I found some instructions to prevent a drive from mounting, but it requires the drive's UUID which I can't get unless it mounts. Also, I don't know if this will stop the clicking. Anyway, here are the instructions. Perhaps there is a way to do something similar without knowing the UUID or by knowing the UUID of the working drives? I appreciate any help.
1. Open Disk Utility
2. Select the bad drive, then click the Info button
3. Copy the Universal Unique Identifier (UUID) code
4. Open a Terminal window and type: sudo pico /etc/fstab
5. Enter your password
6. Enter the line below (using your own UUID):
UUID=CDB15826-88A3-36AC-8009-3E71355F0B18 none hfs rw,noauto
(taken from http://www.macseven.com/files/20070719how_to_prevent_a_drive_volume_frommounting.html)

I don't know if it can be done using software solution (I think not). It's possible to remove the drive physically but it is rather tricky. see this thread for instructions

  • How to move iTunes lib from external HD (used to be internal HD)?

I hit an internal HD failure and didn't have iTunes or iPhoto backed up. Not fun, but no one to blame but me.
I've had Apple replace the HD (320GB for Intel iMac), but I'm back at square one. I put the old HD in an external USB enclosure and can see the file system. Glimmer of hope!! For starters, I've copied as much as possible to a NAS box, but I get errors with some files.
    Here's the question(s).
What's the best way to migrate the iTunes content from the external HD to the new internal drive?
Here some details that may help:
    - I can see the "Music" folder on the old HD (4.5G, 2000 items)
    - I can also see "Library/iTunes" (450 MB, 19 items)
    - all music/content was setup for 1 user account
    - content is:
    imported CD's
about a hundred or so songs purchased from iTunes store
misc podcasts (no need to recover)
    playlists, etc.
I would think the best thing would be to:
    1) fireup iTunes somehow to open the music on the external HD
    2) save/export all the music
    3) close iTunes, then re-open iTunes on the internal HD (currently with empty iTunes lib)
    4) import the library from step #2
    5) verify everything is ok
    6) reformat external drive & recycle it
Even if it is possible, the steps above may fail if I hit a drive error. In that case, I'm guessing some sort of file based restoration may be needed.
Any clues on what to do and in what order are appreciated.
No need for extensive details on the instructions (but it is certainly appreciated). Once I know what to do (and in what order), I can search the support site for detailed instructions on the individual tasks.
I'll probably use better protection once I've got this back together. Time machine is a leading candidate.
    Thank for any clues.
    -Dave

  • Internal drives from my older Macpro keeping my new 8 core from booting

I am upgrading from an older dual core Macpro to a new 8 core and found that if I install any of the internal drives from my older Macpro in the new 8 core the computer won't boot. The drives just have data on them no applications of operating software. The older boot drive won't let the 8 core boot either if its installed.
Anyone know if this is to be expected and if so why? I will have to copy 3 - 1 TB drives if they can't be directly used in the new computer.
    Thanks

I've seen a severe corrupt directory cause Macs to refuse to boot from any drive, even from CD/DVDs making it hard to repair and requiring a USB/FW case to repair/format or recovery files.
During startup the system has to scan for valid boot drives even though startup disk tells it where to try to boot from.
Also yours by default boots in 64-bit mode.
Once you have the files you need copied over, why not just reformat and clone your current system.

  • [solved] Thinkpad x61 w/ /boot on external USB can't see internal hdd

    Hi all,
EDIT: Fixed it. I had to boot the install media and re-run mkinitcpio -p linux. Not sure if I forgot to do that the first time or if something changed...
I have my /boot partition on an external USB key. I installed grub on that key. My main disk is supposed to be encrypted, and is internal in my Thinkpad x61. When I boot with this setup, grub can't find the system disk. I get dumped to a recovery console, and lsblk just shows the USB key.
If I plug the internal drive in via a USB-SATA converter, everything works as it is supposed to.
It seems like when the thinkpad boots from the USB key it isn't turning on the internal drive or making it available to linux. Has anyone seen something like this?
When I boot the arch installation media from USB I can see the internal drive right away. Is there a way to figure out what the installation boot is doing that I'm not on my regular system?
    Thanks in advance,
    Lefty

  • Need to stop Email Notification only from Compensation workbench

    Hi All,
I Need to stop Email Notification only from Compensation workbench, if is there any possiblility kindly guide me guys as I am stuck up due to this.
    Regards,

    Hi,
I can see two CWB workflows - bencwbfy.wft and benssenrtfyi.wft. These are available under $BEN_TOP. You can open these workflows through the Oracle Workflow Builder and note down their workflow names. Thereafter, you can download the definitions of these workflows (most current workflows from the database) from the database through the concurrent program - Workflow Definitions Loader - which should result in the wft files on the destination you've provided running the concurrent program.
Copy those files from the server, and edit them locally using Workflow Definitions Loader to remove or redirect workflow notifications appropriately. Please be aware that this amounts to a customization so you should evaluate the impacts of doing this on your installation. Also, for CWB to support custom workflow, my understanding is that you need to be at Family Pack J or above (you may wish to validate this through Support, though).
    Regards,

  • How to keep an internal drive from being mounted on startup?

Other than opening the box and disconnecting them physically, how do I keep an internal drive from being mounted at startup? I have two problems:
    1) despite having an SSD drive marked as the startup drive, I think one of my other drives is being considered first - startup takes a long time and it shows the gray circle with a line through it, before acquiescing into booting (rapidly and nicely) from the SSD drive. How do I make it ignore the other drives and go right for this?
    2) when the system boots up, if I don't immediately dismount the internal drives (which I don't need most of the time), Time Machine and Spotlight begin going over them.
other than physically removing them, anything I can do in some OS X boot script to keep those drives from being mounted?

Ok, I followed your directions (including de-seleccting and re-selecting the SSD as boot disk from System Preferences). Console: there was nothing under System Diagnostic Reports, but here's what the All Messages logs said after the Boot_Time that demonstrated my issue (3 min wait, then gray circle with a line through it, then finally rapid boot off the SSD). Is there anything here that shows what the heck it's doing before it actually boots off the SSD?

I need to pull a hard drive from a power mac g4 what enclosure will work?

    Hello,
You need one that can handle IDE/PATA drives, they're getting hard to find, but it looks like these might work...

Transferred backed-up data from external hard disk to new hard drive on my MacBook Pro which seemed to be successful. I now find that some (or maybe all) old emails have been resent. Can anyone tell me what has happened?

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Need more storage - larger internal drive, or external drive?

Good day...here's a little background before I head into my question.
I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro with a 320 GB hard drive.  I have an 2 GB WD External Hard drive...I've partitioned 500 GB that I use for my Time Machine backups and use the remaining 1.5 TB to store additional files, mainly music and video files.  I rarely keep it plugged in to my MBP....I'll plug it in to do the odd Time Machine backup every couple of weeks, but that's about it.  I like taking the MBP to the living room to use and the idea of having to plug and unplug an external hard drive several times a day is something I've decided not to do.  Additionally, I access most of my photos/music/video through my Apple TV to play them on my TV/receiver.  I also have no need to use the cloud as I don't require access to my media files when I'm out of the house.
My internal hard drive has been filling up over the last year and as it has, I've been dumping video files to my external hard drive.  If I need them again, I'll simply transfer the odd one back to my MBP and add it back to the Itunes library.  However, even with the odd purging, my internal drive is now filling up, mainly due to photos and videos of the little kids.  The time has come, I need to do something.
I know that I have the option to store my Itunes library on an external drive (and this would quickly fix my storage issue as about half the 320 GB of space is my Itunes library), but I've been hesitate to do so.  I do have an Airport Extreme Base Station downstairs and a PC Desktop as well.  In reviewing these forums, I understand that I can transfer my Itunes library to my external hard drive, connect it right to the AEBS and access my Itunes files on my MBP from there.  However, as I buy new music/videos from Itunes or add other media files to my Itunes on my MBP, would they automatically transfer to the Itunes library on my External, or would I have to add them each time?  Is it still pretty seamless to transition to having my itunes library on an external hard drive without a lengthy list of things that you have to "put up with"?
In an effort to resist too much change, I've been thinking about simply replacing my 320 GB internal drive with a 1 TB internal drive so that I can keep things pretty much as they are...keep the Itunes library on my MBP and continue using the 2 TB external for backups and some additional storage space.
So, with that, I'm curious to hear any feedback on how to approach this...am I complicating things, are there any suggestions on how I could be organizing things way better?  And finally, is your advice to increase the internal hard drive, or should I quit overthinking this and just move the ituens library to an external hard drive?
    Thanks!
    Lee

    large external HD
A computer should never be considered a data storage device, only a data creation/ sending/ manipulation device.
All mega-storage should be a "grab and dash" item to store in a fire vault etc.  Easily unhooked from a main computer capable of lightning strike, failure,  easy erasure, etc.
And never ever rely on one backup ever. Recipe for disaster.
There are currently only 3 HD manufacturers, WD, Seagate, and Hitachi/Toshiba (recently acquired by WD).
No such thing as a "windows" Hard Drive either, .....only a Win formatted HD.  A HD is a HD ... whatever it says or is formatted in when you buy it,... you can format it for Mac OSX extended journaled.
All personal conjecture aside, Hitachi/Toshiba are the best 2.5" HD, same used by Apple inside the Macbook Pro
..... also those running literally 1000s of HD in server farms agree on this.
That being said, WD are not recommended as an internal HD for a Mac.
Most reliable 3.5" class HD are Seagate
The LaCie drives carried in the Apple stores contain 3.5" Seagate HD
Most reliable 2.5" class HD are HItachi/Toshiba (same as used by Apple in the macbook Pro).
MUCH empirical data (and my own as well) says that Western Digital are the worst
WD has some compatibility issues with Mac.
Best bang for the buck in external 2.5" HD, is the Toshiba Canvio Basics     HDTB120XK3CA   2 Terabytes 2.5" External Hard Drive
I have 4 of these tiny 2TB drives, ....theyre highly rated, and phenomenal
    Currently theyre $120
    http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Basics-Portable-HDTB120XK3CA/dp/B00ARJD56K
People running server farms and see 1000s of HD, and failures will all tell you the same, in 3.5" class, get a Seagate, and DONT get a WD.
7 out of 10 HD failures have NOTHING to do with the HD.......if a HD fails (and they all fail) , its usually first 3 months or less
7 out of those 10 failures AFTER 3 months is NOT a bad HD, but a cheap/junk SATA connector and circuitry which connects the external HD to your computer.
Seagate large BACKUP HD 3.5" had gotten, for a while a bad reputation, but it had nothing to do with the HD, rather the cheap SATA connector interface that it was plugged into in the external casing.

  • I cannot boot my 2012 Macbook Air 13" from external USB 2.0/3.0 drive.

I just purchased a new 2012 MacBook Air 13" with 8GB ram and 256Gb SSD. I have clones of my 2011 MBA drive made with Superduper on both a USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 external drives. The USB 2.0 drive enclosure contains the OWC Aura 256GB 6G SSD that used to be the internal drive for my 2011 MBA.
I cannot boot my new 2012 MBA from either external drive. When I try to do so, the MBA displays shows a gray circle with a line through it.
I can boot my MacBook Pro 2010 and 2007 Mac Pro just fine with either USB external drive. So, it must be something up with compatibility with the new 2012 MBA. All of my Macs are running 10.7.4 with all of the latest upgrades available as of 6/24/12.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
    Bud James

I have a drive I had been using in a 2007 MacBook that I would like to "upgrade" to a compatible version of 10.7.4 (build 11E2705), but I am having trouble finding a way to get the version of the OS on the drive without affecting the data on the drive.
I had hoped that booting from the Recovery partion on the SSD would allow me to "Reinstall 10.7" to get a compatible version, but the drive still can not boot the 2012 MacBook Air.
I may try cloning next, moving directories I want to keep to the root level of the target drive, but I wish there was an easier way to "refresh" the install of the OS to a newer version for new hardware.
I also need to find a way to "refresh" the USB drive I have for installing 10.7, to make sure it has the ability to boot new hardware, since the original 10.7.4 USB install clone does not boot the newest laptops.

  • Cloning an internal drive from an external bootable copy

    Hope this makes sense...
I work in an edit facility using Avid that's only recommended to use with 10.5.5 and some of our machines run 10.5.8. My thought was to create a bootable external disk image from one of our "good" edit computers and then wipe the hard drive of a 10.5.8 machine, replacing it with the 10.5.5 image. Is this possible or will it muck up the towers I'm replacing with the external disk image?

As long as these other computers do not require a later version of OS X, then it's quite possible. The two basic steps are:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions of the HDD you are going to clone.
    2. Clone the drive to the external drive.
    3. Boot each target computer from the external drive; Restore the clone from external to internal.
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. Select the language. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select the internal HDD from the sidebar and click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. Click on the Repair Permissions button.
    a. Select the External volume from the sidebar.
    b. Click on the Restore tab in Disk Utility's main window.
    c. Check the box labeled "Erase destination."
    d. Select the External volume from the sidebar and drag it to the "Destination" entry field.
    e. Select the Internal volume from the sidebar and drag it to the "Source" entry field.
    f. Click on the Restore button.
Use the external clone to boot one of the target computers. Repeat the above steps but reverse the "Source" and "Destination" fields. "Source" becomes the External volume and "Destination" becomes the target computer.

  • Forwarding mail from external OSX 10.3 to internal OS 10.4 postfix server?

I have set up an internal postfix server and an external postfix server.
The internal server is up and running sending messages to all the internal users.
And the internal users are able to send email to the Internet.
And those message are being relayed through the external server.
Also I have opened the smtp port in the gateway between the two machines.
And the MX record points to the external server.
But I'm having a problem receiving mail. It seems that the external server is receiving mail but not relaying it to the internal server.
I still have "mydestination" set to mydomain.com on the external server.
I'm not certain if this is the main reason why the mail hangs or if this value needs to remain in place after I start using the external server as a relay. But then again I also have to tell the external server where to relay all incoming mail.
I was wondering if the following would make sense:
    Remove the mydestination parameter
    set up a "relay_domains = mydomain.com"
    set up a "transport_maps =hash:/etc/postfix/transport"
    and then add "mydomain.com relay:[gw.mydomain.com]"
    to the transport file?
Is this the correct method or should I take a different approach?
    TIA
    Hans

This episode has tought me that information found on
the internet is not always correct.
Quite often the problem is not always incorrect information, but also the fact that postfix can be configured in many different ways. Considering however the way OS X is "pre-configured", solutions which are fine for a "plain-vanilla" postfix install will not necessarily work without modification on OS X.
    The sad thing is
I had looked at the postfix homepage but overlooked
the information you pointed me to.
Happens to me all the time
I do have a question though...
When naming my two servers, can I use any names that
comply to hostname.mydomain.com or do I need to use
    mail.mydomain.com for the external server?
You are free to use any FQDN you wish as long as the MX record reflects it.
mail.domain.tld is often used because it is easy for users to remember when configuring smtp/pop/imap. It is however only a convention/habit like www. is for websites.
    Have fun,
    Alex

  • Prevent internal drive from mounting at startup

How do I easily prevent an internal hard drive from mounting at startup?
The machine has two internal drives and I want the upper drive to not mount unless needed. Both are bootable but lower is chosen as the startup drive.
    Thanks for any help.
    G5 dual 2.5 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Take it out and put it in a removable FW + SATA case.
There is little need or reason to have it not mount. If it is backup or emergency drive, external would be preferable... and put internal drive bay to some other use.

  • I want to recover data from an old 10.5.8 internal drive using 10.8

After five years of service my old 2007-era MacBook fell victim to a liquid spill which shorted the motherboard. I had put off a system upgrade for a while and was still working with 10.5.8. I purchased a new MacBook Air yesterday and immediately upgraded it to the latest OS (10.8)
I carefully removed the hard drive from the old 2007 MacBook. Most of the files on it were backed up to the cloud, but a very important few (the latest) didn't make it. If possible, I'd like to retrieve these files.
So I purchased a SATA-to-USB cable and CAREFULLY grounded myself while connecting the old internal boot drive (which boots 10.5.8) to the MacBook Air (which boots 10.8.)
The drive shows up in Disk Utility as follows (it's confusingly named "ssd"):
However, disk utility will not permit me to verify or repair the file.
2012-08-01 14:59:39 -0400: Verify and Repair volume “ssd”
    2012-08-01 14:59:39 -0400: Starting repair tool:
2012-08-01 15:03:49 -0400: Repairing volume failed: Unrecognized file system.
So I go into the terminal to check the permissions. Using "ls -al" I get this:
So the drive is there, but is not mounted, and has neither read nor write access for any user, and Disk Utility is not recognizing the file system. Is this a backwards-compatibility problem?
NOTE: I could try booting from the old internal disk directly. However, this drive doesn't show up as an option in the "Startup Disk" folder, and I'm reluctantly to boot an Air on 10.5.8.

That may work, if the file permissions will allow it.  And it will work for "simple" applications, but not "complex" ones, that came with their own installers. See Transferring  Applications.   Complex apps must be transferred via Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant, or reinstalled from the original discs or downloads.

  • Moving Internal Drives from a G4 to a G5?

I have a G4that I use for audio editing, but it's dying on me, and I want to upgrade to a G5. But from what I've read, the G5 can only use SATA internal drives. My G4 has two large internal drives, one 250GB for my system files, and general document files, and one 400GB for my audio files. I believe they're both internal SCSI drives connected to a 133 PCI card that I installed (without it, the machine could not read "large" drives). If I buy a used G5, will I be able to use those drives in the G5? Or will I need all new drives to put in it?

Oh boy, I love SCSI, but unless that card works in the G5 you're out of luck, but that beeing said I think, (hope), they might be IDE/ATA drives, then you could put them in Firewire cases to use them, but IDE/ATA Firewire cases are drying up fast, here's one...
