Booting From MAC OS CD?  (It won't)

Okay, so someone I knew was gonna throw out an iMac. I hate seeing computers go to waste, so I just took it. They didn't have any CDs or anything with it.
I turn it on, and obviously can't login. I dunno the password and neither do they. I found that I'd need an MAC OS startup disk. So I downloaded one, ad, from near as I can tell, your suppose to hold down "C" during the startup to load from the CD.
Except it doesn't. It just loads the "MAC OS 9.1" screen and brings me to the same login page. I've used multiple disks 9.0, 9.2.1 (I can't fins a OS 9.1 per se). ****, I even through a Windows disk for kicks and giggles.
Any ideas?
(Note: I hear the CD spinning and they are warm when I eject them, so I don't think it's a hardware issue)

While the iMac G3 series can boot OS X, the computer did require
a Firmware Update to be installed prior to booting in OS X. And in
order to install the Firmware Update (a download from Support)
the computer needs to have a running OS 9.1 or 9.2 system in it.
Once a suitable OS 9.1 or later 9 is definitely running the computer,
you can look in the System Profiler to see what the bootROM or
Firmware version is; along with a few other details about the iMac.
It may have already been updated to the proper Firmware version.
Some of the early iMac G3s shipped with OS 8.6; so their original
software packet would be very machine specific and not be able
to support dual-booting to an OS X system and would not be able
to be used to upgrade the essential Firmware Update needed for X.
The computer has information printed on the case, in back or on
the bottom; probably near the ports. This should specify what the
original as-shipped configuration was: processor, RAM, etc. And
you could get a free database download from http://mactracker.ca
to further investigate those specifications to more closely guess
at what model & build-date you have. There are different versions.
In order to run OS X (even boot the X disc in the older Mac) the
Firmware Update should be applied first while it is running OS 9.1
or the proper OS9 version if later - it shipped with. To not install the
later Firmware update, if needed, may cause damage to the iMac.
See this page for the noted applicable early firmware update(s.)
"Mac OS X - Available Firmware Updates"
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1395
Either firmware 2.1 - or 4.1.9. The oldest iMac takes the lower number
and the higher number applies to later iMac G3 a slot-load optical
drive. First iMac G3s with CRT display had a tray-load optical drive.
So, without looking for a serial number or configuration data on the
case, you can tell if the computer has a slot drive or tray drive. An
early indentifier to start with. And MacTracker is very helpful to have.
{The iMac G3 with FireWire ports could also be started in Target Disk
Mode and checked over somewhat by another Macintosh, via a dual
end 6-connection FireWire cable; or startup attempted by an external
enclosed hard disk drive with OS 9.2, (app folder & OS intact.) Been
long enough ago, I don't recall now if the external enclosure needs to
be a FireWire enclosure for the hard disk drive, but that would work.
The older USB was a bit slow in data transfer speeds, so FW is likely.}
Good luck & happy computing!

No. Your best option by far is to find updates or replacements for that long-obsolete software. In the long run, you'll have no other choice. As a last resort, you could do this:
Installing Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) into Parallels
The instructions are slightly out of date. That's not a recommendation and I haven't tried it myself.

  • Unable to Boot from Mac OS Tiger Server 10.4.0 Install CD

    Hi,
I just picked up a Powermac G3 and am trying to install Tiger Server 10.4.0 from the install CD. The G3 won't boot from the CD (holding the c key at startup) and when I try to install from Open Firmware (using boot cd), I get the following message:
MAC PARTS: Load (noninterposed) not supported load-size0=adler32=1.
I'm assuming the above is bad news!
Other than booting, the CD appears to work fine. Also, the firmware is all up to date. The current version of OS on the G3 is 9.2.2 but unfortunately, I do not have any install disks for this (hence why I want to try and upgrade and install my legitimate server OS on it).
Other than that, all I can say is that it is a 300Mhz G3 Blue and White with what appears to be a 10gb hard drive. Other info from System Profiler is:
    Ram: 256mb
    Machine ID: 406
    Mac OS Rom 9.2.1
I assume that Tiger would be a little bit choosy about some of the older hardware, but nevertheless would be grateful for any assistance as to whether this can be installed on this Powermac.
    Thanks for your assistance.

Did some research and it appears that puting Tiger server on a B&W is a lot more difficult than puting Tiger (workstation?) on a B&W. (i.e. You're not the only one with this problem.) The offered solutions have been to take your hard drive out and install server on it from another machine - which you can't do with the machines you have... unless you swap the drive out of your iMac.... but that's up to you. I wouldn't risk it.
The other option is to spring for a DVD drive that will work in your B&W and boot from the DVD and install that way. You can pick them up for about $50. (I know that's about what your B&W is worth, but that's life...) If you go this route, make sure you get a DVD that Apple has written the drivers for (Pioneer, NEC, etc. ) and built into the OS installer. My personal drive is an NEC ND-3540A. Picked it up at NewEgg.com. That's what I had to do to get Tiger on mine.

  • Cannot access boot from Mac OSX install Disc-frozen cursor

Twice a month I do some housekeeping and clean up my Mac--run scripts, verify preferences, repair permissions, etc. Quarterly I boot from the installation disc to renew any start up info that may have become corrupted.
My IMACG5 won't allow me to do this now. I put the disc in, and shut down the machine. I start it up again while holding down the C key but when it is finished booting from the disc my mouse cursor is frozen on the screen and I cannot acess anything. I have a battery operated mouse and I always check to make sure there is sufficient battery life.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is up and how I resolve this issue? At this point I won't be able to wipe my hard drive and re-boot everything fresh from my installaion discs because the cursor is frozen.

I put the disc in, and shut down the machine.I start it up again while holding down the C key but when it is finished booting from the disc my mouse cursor is frozen on the screen and I cannot acess anything.
I hope you mean Restart and not Shut Down.
Insert CD, under Apple drop down menu -> restart after/ at the chime hold the c key dowm till the gear/ wheel stops spinning .

  • My Macbook has a Kernel Panic when trying to boot from Mac OS Install DVD

It might also be relevant that my Accounts Preference Panel crashes System Preferences when I try to open it. Disk Utility sees no problems with my drive, and booting into single user mode and doing a disk check has no results.
    I am running a 2010 Macbook
    2GB Ram
    2.4 Duel Core Processor
    Mac OS 10.6.8
Windows Installed Via Bootcamp, but problems occured before Windows was installed as well.
Anything Else that I need to add?

Try reinstalling Snow Leopard. If you continue getting a kernel panic booting from the DVD, then either you have a bad installer disc or you have a hardware failure.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Can not boot from Mac OS X Install Disc 1, G5, Snow Leopard

    I have version 10.6.8 installed. Compter is a 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon. 6GB memory
I want to run Disk Utility and startup from the install CD that came with the computer (the grey one, disc 1, or even the retail disc Mac OS X Snow leopard, the whit one) but I CAN NOT DO IT. So frustrating.
I restart, hold down the "C" key, before the chime, after the chime, every which way, and my Mac always acts as if I am simply restarting, goes right to the login screen everytime. I tried holding down OPTION on restart to choose which to startup from, but only saw the hard drive as an option. I open System Preferences, Startup Disk and the install CD does not even show up as a choice to start from, yet the install CD shows up in the finder.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

    OK.
According to  the knowledge base that model should have shipped with Tiger, 10.4.7.
Going to need some thought here, though. I was going to suggest a possible problem with the optical drive, but you say the DVD mounts on the desktop as a normal DVD would?
Nevertheless, do you have access to another Mac or an external HD with a bootable OS X on it (later than the Tiger version your Mac Pro shipped with)?
If so, try booting from the external, or from the other Mac using Firewire Target Disk mode, and using DU from one of those sources to repair the MP's internal HD, then try the disc(s) again.

  • IMac running on Mac OS 10.5.8 & Windows XP wont boot from Mac OS

I have an iMac running Mac OS 10.5.8 and Windows XP (ServicePack 3) on Boot Camp 2.2. This configuration has worked for me perfectly for the past 2 years up until recently. From nowhere, the system is now refusing to boot to Mac OS but boots into Windows XP without any problem.
    I have tried to repair the Boot Camp 2.2 in Windows XP via the repair/update option from the Boot Camp installation but its giving a fail message;
The installer has encountered an unexpected error installingthis package. The error code is 2727.
    I have also tried to verify and repair the Macintosh HD partition using the Disk Utility but its giving me the following error message;
    On verify disk
    Invalid Sibling link
    Volume check failed
ERROR: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I could repartition and start all over again but there are some files and emails I need to retrieve from the Mac partition before I delete and repartition.
Is there any shareware software that I can install on theWindows XP partition and be able to access/retrieve my files in the Mac partition?

you can't repair Mac OS X from Windows.
What you need to do and realize is that Disk Utility is not good enogh or reliable enough and you need 3rd party disk repair utility.
Or just restore Mac HFS from backups.
You may want to install Mac OS on another external hard drive
Recover the files there - probably best to have two partitions.
you should have already created multiple backup sets: clone type and TimeMachine
Disk Warrior is $90 or there is TechTool Pro 6 for almost same
Cloning is easy enough either from Mac OS X DVD Disk Utility Restore or from another hard drive.

  • Unable to boot from Mac OS X Server 10.5.4 disk

    Hi all,
I've just purchased a Mac Mini and Mac OS Server X 10.5.4 (upgraded to 10.5.6), and since I'm new at it, I wanted to reinstall my server to a fresh install.
So I inserted my CD, double-clicked on the Install icon, entered my password, and clicked Restart.
On restart, the system gives me a gray screen for about 10 seconds (no apple displayed) and reboots. It does this endlessly, over and over...
My CD seems in perfect condition and I was able to use it for my initial installation. So I doubt it's my CD.
Am I missing something, or should this work? Am I looking at a defective DVD reader or a defective Mac OS disk?
    Thanks!

Actually, I have no idea how you would do that. There is no 10.5.6 Server retail installer. 10.5.4 is the current retail version, but there is a 10.5.6 Server Combo Updater. My guess is you would need to install the version you have on an older Mac that will boot from 10.5.4, then upgrade it to 10.5.6 by downloading the combo updater. Then practically I would partition the Mini's hard drive, then clone the 10.5.6 updated server system to the second volume on the Mini's drive.

  • I can't boot from the Install/restore CDs & won't recognize an external HD

I purchased a used Powerbook G4 with tiger 10.4.11 installed. I have two problems Which I think may be software based.
First I want to Install OS 9.2 to use some programs I had on my old Mac. However when holding down the C key the computer still boots off the HD. The disk I am using is marked Power Mac G4 Mac OS version 10.2, however the read me file said it should work for the powerbook.
Second I purchased a USB external HD for use as a back up and to store graphic and music files. The computer will not recognize it. every other USB device I have used has worked (printer, mouse, keyboards and flash drives).
Is this some sort of security feature? If so how do I reset it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Donis, and a warm welcome to the forums!
However when holding down the C key the computer still boots off the HD.
Is Firmware password protection in Mac OS X setup...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMDOption+pr, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.
The disk I am using is marked Power Mac G4 Mac OS version 10.2, however the read me file said it should work for the powerbook.
Some PBs, which exact one do you have?
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac.
Then click on More Info>Hardware and report this upto *but not including the Serial#*...

Hi everyone after messing my computer up I am now trying an archive and install !!!
Trying to boot up from Mac OS X Install Disc (labelled For Mac Computers) by pressing down the 'C' key whilst booting up. Everytime I do this the computer just restarts it self over and over again
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong or if something is wrong with the disc
    Thanks everyone

    Hi jackVDP;
It sounds like you aer using the generic Leopard DVD. Could it have an older version of Leopard that your Mac had originally? If so the Mac will not boot .
Why are you not using the DVD that came with your Mac?

Maybe you killed your boot drive.
Normally you should of course be able to boot from SL DVD and instead of INSTALL go to menu bar and UTILITIES and select DISK UTILITY.
ZAP the PRAM will result in the "?" because the boot volume setting is no longer present. You can reset that also from SL DVD Utility / Startup Disk
    My methods:
Clone and have a bootable backup first, DU Restore; or SuperDuper
Run utilities from there, like Disk Warrior
Even though you are suppose to be able to install from desktop, SL also needs to "prepare disk" (update partition table) and it is safer and really really adviseable to do repair from the DVD, as with any upgrade have a couple backups in place first.
