Booting From USB-- opening Recovery mode?

So, I copied my Moutain Lion CD to a USB Drive (on another computer) because there's no hard drive on Air's and I bought ML forever ago at an Apple store and didn't have it associated with my Apple ID. But, when I try to reboot from my USB Drive on my Air (pressing Option after startup) it appears on the list of drives (although Mac HD doesn't...?) and when I click it, it goes to OS X Utilties. From there is Disk Utilties (Mac HD is in there...!) and Reinstall ML (from Apple ID though). I don't know how I keep getting to this recovery page, when I just want to reboot to my USB drive.

Mt Lion never came on a CD/DVD. You can't get Mt Lion without buying it from the Mac App Store unless it came Preinstalled on your Mac when it was built, New.
If it is not associated with your Apple ID then it is associated with someone else's Apple ID, that is unless as stated above it came Pre-Installed on your Mac when it was new, Manufactured.
If you have a Mid 2012 Air model there is a Recall on the SSD installed in them.

Yoga 11s - how to boot from USB in UEFI mode (tried everything)

I have been trying for days to install Windows 7 on my new Yoga 11s in dual boot configuration with 8.1, with no luck. Typical catch-22 problem -- can't boot from the install media in UEFI mode, and if booted in legacy mode, Windows won't install on GPT partition. I followed all the steps everywhere mentioned: disabled secure boot, set boot mode and order in every possible combination, etc. I followed these steps exactly to create a UEFI-bootable USB drive:http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-8-and-8-1-Knowledge-Base/Why-can-t-I-boot-from-a-USB-key-on-UEFI-ThinkPad-or-ThinkCentre/ta-p/1004621 I can boot easily from the USB in legacy mode, but in UEFI mode, when starting the machine, the USB is ignored. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager Menu." Then I click OK and it offers only one option on the menu, Windows Boot Manager. I don't know if the lack of boot options is just a symptom of the USB not really being UEFI-bootable, or some other steps are needed to add boot options. I even tried adding an item within the windows boot manager, but that didn't work, because even if it could work in principle I don't know the right settings. Has anyone actually made this work? If so, what is the secret?

I had the same problem and a lot of frustration. I finally solved the problem by using a different USB key. I also had to go into boot options and select the USB key even though I had the USB key first in the boot order. Right now I am Re-imaging from my backup and pray for success. Although things may look brigth afterall I have to leave out some steam:The whole problem started with a screen error, which had to be repaired. So before sending it to repair I made an image backup, - just in case. I got an eight hour time window where I had to wait for a pickup of the computer,- very frustrating when you are having a job requiring traveling. After ten days the computer computer came back with a scrambled hard disk with at note saying that it was an software error, although it was no doubt an hardware error because it worked perfectly with an external monitor. I have not counted the number of hours this bad service has costs but it exceeds the value of the computer!

How do i install os 10.7 from usb in recovery mode

The os that is on my old macbook is corrupted and I need to install a new version purchased from the apple website that delivers it via email. Once I have transferred it to a storage device, how do I install it via usb or disk?

The only thing you get in the email is a redemption code that allows you to download Lion through your App Store account. Can you boot your Mac normally long enough to download Lion?
If so, once you have the full Lion installer, you can use any 8 GB flash drive to create a bootable installer with DiskMaker X.

W541: Cannot boot from USB created with Windows 8 create recovery drive

Hello, I have just bought a W541, and want to install the supplied Windows 8 on an m.2 SSD.I created the recovery drive on a USB following the instructions in the User Manual, but the recover image procedure under Advanced Options cannot find the USB.During the re-image step, it fails to find a drive with a valid image.I've confirmed using the command window available under the Advanced Options that the USB is mounted Searching these forums, I found the following, which describes a similar problem for a T540:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-W-Series-Laptops/Lenovo-W540-won-t-boot-from-USB-flash-drive-ThinkPad/m-p/1500902#M39097 This implies that the USB should first be formatted with FAT32 before use, which cannot work, since FAT32 only has a maximum 4 GB partition, whereas when copied to the USB, the Windows 8 recovery drive occupies nearly 10 GB. Is it possible to specify the boot order from insde the BIOS? I could only find an entry under Security about UEFI boot enabling, nothing about the boot order. Can anyone help?Paul

I tried another USB drive, and created a recovery drive, as before.This time it was able to detect the presence of the drive when I tapped on the Enter key when starting up, followed by the F12 key. However, there are still problems when I clicked through the options:Choose the languageChoose your keyboard layoutTroubleshootAdvanced optionsSystem Image Recovery At this point I am offered the option Windows 8.1.When I select this, it indicates it is scanning for system disks, and then displays the the pop-up window "Re-image your computer": "Windows cannot find a system image on this computer" Why does this happen if it detected that there was a Windows 8.1 installation on the USB? I've spent a whole day now on this. Luckily, if I can't solve it, the machine is new and I can send it back to Lenovo, and ask to have it re-imaged with the downgrade option to Windows 7.

I have not only regenerated my boot files while updating my deployment share, I have completely rebuilt the MDT 2012 deployment share from scratch, and I'm still getting the exact same errors. I can't figure out what is causing this. The only hits for these
errors seemed to say that the -214... error is likely related to a missing file, but I don't know how to figure out what that might be. I don't know what the FAILURE ( 5456 ) could be caused by, either, although it seems to be related to not knowing what partition
should be imaged or imaged to. I haven't been able to find any reference to MDT needing a partition to image from/to set in a CS.ini property or in a task variable.
I am running a modified version of the Sysprep and Capture Task Sequence (set up as described at http://bjtechnews.org/2012/06/01/mdt-2012-capturing-a-reference-image-part-ii/, it's basically the default settings for that TS with the sysprep step disabled and
the "Set Image Folder" task variable created per that post--I ran sysprep myself, manually, on the machine before shutting it down to boot from USB) after booting a Dell Latitude 10 tablet from a USB drive created by extracting the contents of the
MDT 2012 DeploymentShare$\Boot\LiteTouchpe_x86.iso to a FAT32-formatted volume.

Can't boot from USB or DVD. HP Pavilion g6-2257sr

My new notebook HP Pavilion g6-2257sr don't let me to boot from USB device.
When notebook's booting, I pressed ESC and F10. Then I set up UFEI boot order - USB-device / DVD / OS selector.
I use official Windows 7 disk, and several own USB devices with bootable images.
But rebboting use hard drive's OS all the same.
Please help. I want to delete current OS from my notebbok.

Hi:
I would make a set of recovery disks first before proceeding.
To boot the PC you need to go into the BIOS and enable legacy mode.
Then you should be able to boot from another device.

How to boot from USB flash drive - Portege R500

Hi,
I have a Portege R500 running Windows XP, brought about 2 years ago, and recently contracted a worm virus that has infected some of the start up files as the minute I log in it logs out again, even in safe mode! Quickest way I can think of sorting it is to reformat it with the XP recovery disc and reinstall windows.
Problem!! The CD/DVD drive on the laptop stopped working a while ago, have tried pretty much everything in the thread on this site but had no luck.
So my plan was to boot from a USB flash drive and do it that way. However in the boot settings I only have the options of HDD / FDD / CD-ROM / LAN, neither of these will work. Does anyone know how to boot from USB flash drives?
Any help would be really appreciated

As far as I know it should be possible to boot from USB FDD
Im not sure if you would be able to boot from USB flash drive but its definitely worth a try
Generally you could try to press F12 button when notebook powers up.
Then a boot menu should appear on the display and you should see all bootable devices.
PS: As far as I know the USB booting was available in ToshibaHWSetup (Toshiba tool which changes the BIOS settings in windows OS.) Therefore I assume booting from USB should be possible.

Flex 15D Help reinstalling - Boot from USB

I'm hoping someone can help.
I have a Flex 15D (no optical drive) shipped with Windows 8.1
At present it is completely unresponsive, taking anything up to 5 minutes to recognise that I have clicked anything, open the task manager, etc. The task manager doesn't show anything heavy running, AV has scanned the PC and there are no infections. so I decided to go back to scratch and restart.
OneKey simply tell me that the recovery partition has become corrupted and can't be used.
I then bought a copy of Windows 8.1 from Microsoft, followed their instructions to create a bootable USB key and get windows 8.1 set up from the DVD onto it, but the Lenovo won't boot from USB. I have been in the BIOS, boot from USB is set, but the boot options give me the OS booter only.
Third attempt i went out and bought a USB DVD drive, connected that and tried to install a brand new Windows 8.1, but again the Lenovo won't acknowledge that there is a DVD drive attached (although it sees and uses it perfectly when it does finally boot into windows).
Can anyone give me any help as to how I could reinstall the laptop?

Looks like you'll have to remove the hard drive, put it in a usb caddy and use another computer to get your data.

Satellite C50-A634 wont boot from USB or DVD

My new toshiba Satellite C50-A634 wont boot from usb, or dvd ,
i have downloaded win 8.1 and burn image to dvd but i still get an error message "no bootable device......please restart system" .
Can some one plz help?

Does Satellite C50-A634 supports internal CD/DVD drive or did you try to boot from external optical disk drive?
You have to know that _Satellite C50 & Satellite C50D models *without* a built-in ODD_ are not able to boot from an external ODD due to a technical limitation.

Only USB flash drives are supported as external boot devices!
It is necessary you can use a USB flash drive as recovery media on notebooks without a built-in ODD.

HP Pavilion 11 x2 not booting from USB

I have tried everything I can think of but my HP Pavilion 11 x2 will not boot from USB...I have Windows 10 currently installed on it and need to boot from USB to allow me to install a new OS on the machine.
I have gone into hte bios...(which I can see is a locked bios with very limited options)....I have turned off the Secure Boot option and have set the USB has the first boot device.
But when I hit F9 on startup...it just gives me 2 options:-
OS Boot Manager
Boot From EFI File
I have tried Boot from EFI File...but this does not work..
I know the USB is configured correctly as I can boot from it on my desktop computer.
How can I get this to work?

i stumbbled into your thread while i was looking for a similar answer for my Pavilion X2 10".
mine was delivered with win 8.1 with bing. it was alright to use, but i was unable to bring this machine to connect to my office domain. due to the lack of networking features which is only available in the pro or enterprise version of win 8.1.
i tried many ways to load in a win 8.1 pro os. the disc is authentic, keys are authentic, usb stick or optical drives; it makes no differences. the machine just refuse to boot into the usb disc / stick like all other previous system does.
there isnt an option for the bios to go into legacy mode. however there is an option to turn off the secure boot, but that does not gives legacy support to the make the system boot to usb.
i had probably done the same things you tried, no matter what setting is done to the bios, there is always only 'os boot manager' and 'ueif' when i hit boot sequence (f9).
had tired everything that i can think of, talking to HP was like talking to an answering machine, and they were asking the most bacis questions ... "were you able to select 'legacy boot' from the bios menu?" ... even when i tell them there isnt a legacy boot option in the bios ... they were too amature .
i concluded that the only way to boot to usb is to do it in uefi with secure boot off and encryption turn off in win 8.1 (else it will bring u to bitlocker).
but i am still unable to boot into the usb media to install win 8.1 pro today. i gave up.

Hi hava a tablete WT7-C-100. I need to run an Android app but this tablet have Windows 8.1.

The micro USB port can be used in order to boot the recovery image from USB flash memory stick.
To boot from USB flash memory stick, the tablet should be powered off.
Then insert recovery USB flash memory stick into micro US port using micro USB to USB converter cable. Then hold down power button and volume up button simultaneously until the boot menu is loaded. Then use volume up and down button to select the right option from the menu to boot the recovery image.

Booting from USB DVD on Lenovo X121e

Hi, any idea how to boot from a Lenovo recovery disk for Windows 7 on a USB driven DVD drive? The laptop is currently running Linux so can't run from within the operating system. The BIOS utility doesn't recognise the drive no matter what I select in the boot menu (USB CD, USB FDD or USB HDD) and the F12 boot utility also doesn't recognise the drive. Incidently, F12 does recognise the Linux USB drive so I know this works. The external drive is a Leicke DVD R/RW DVD.
The reason for wanting to boot from the Windows 7 recivery drive is to reinstall Win 7 on a new install, dual boot Linux (Mint), then install iTunes on WIn 7so I can sync my iPhone, and run everything else under Linux. I've tried using a Win emulator under Linux but unsucessfully.

in order to perform factory recovery from the Lenovo image BIOS Setup menu settings should be:
- "UEFI/Legacy Boot" -> "Both"
- "UEFI/Legacy Boot Priority" -> "Legacy First"
Select USB CD as bootable drive.

10-K010CA laptop cannot boot from USB

I try everything ( update BIOS, disable securiy boot, setup usb boot first ). But the laptop will not boot any other USB disk except the Recovery USB Disk create by the laptop.
I had a few USB Disk ( windows 7, linux ) which boot normally on HP Desktop PC which set to boot UEFI but will not boot from this laptop.
Will this laptop able to boot from USB Disk at all?

How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Are all of these bootable media UEFI, or is there a mix, of UEFI and legacy?
Have you tried setting your notebook to legacy boot?

Satellite C50-A-1DV - Cannot boot from USB

Satellite C50-A-1DV PSCG6E-08P01CEN
I could previously boot from USB by selecting Secure boot to off and CSM boot in the system bios. Since I have upgraded my bios from 1.3 to 1.4 I can't seem to boot from a USB drive. I can boot from the CD but not USB.
Any Ideas?

hello
if you want install os in laptop then you should have to change the boot mode in BIOS menu.
for win 7 select the CSM boot mode
for win 8 select the UEFI boot mode
then boot by the pen drive and also CD/DVD.
Restart the system and hold the F2 key then you get your BIOS setup
if not get the BIOS setup by the process then you should tried power drainage.
Power Drainage process: just remove the battery and adapter of the laptop then hold the power key for 30 sec
after that connect adapter of the laptop then turn on system.
Try it...:)
