Booting from USB possible?

I have an 845 PE at home and the last time i looked at the bios for boot order, there was no choice for USB.
I have some applications at home that require older versions of OS'es and my thoughts were to install Win 95 on a USB harddrive and boot from it.
Do any of the newer versions of BIOS support this function?
Thanks.

Maybe, But I do indeed Doubt it , As this is More of a "Hardware" Issue with the Chipset then a BIOS Issue.......But I am Not Completely 100% Sure on your 845 Board...Maybe one of the Moderators has better Insight.......Sean REILLY875

As far as I know something like this is not possible. Maybe on some business notebooks like Tecra or Portege, but not on Satellite L series.

    Hi
I think it should be possible.
This notebook supports an Phoenix BIOS. Am I right?
In such case these boot options should be available:
USB FDD, HDD, ODD, Network(LAN), USB Memory
Try to select the USB and check if you can see the further option.

I have not only regenerated my boot files while updating my deployment share, I have completely rebuilt the MDT 2012 deployment share from scratch, and I'm still getting the exact same errors. I can't figure out what is causing this. The only hits for these
errors seemed to say that the -214... error is likely related to a missing file, but I don't know how to figure out what that might be. I don't know what the FAILURE ( 5456 ) could be caused by, either, although it seems to be related to not knowing what partition
should be imaged or imaged to. I haven't been able to find any reference to MDT needing a partition to image from/to set in a CS.ini property or in a task variable.
I am running a modified version of the Sysprep and Capture Task Sequence (set up as described at http://bjtechnews.org/2012/06/01/mdt-2012-capturing-a-reference-image-part-ii/, it's basically the default settings for that TS with the sysprep step disabled and
the "Set Image Folder" task variable created per that post--I ran sysprep myself, manually, on the machine before shutting it down to boot from USB) after booting a Dell Latitude 10 tablet from a USB drive created by extracting the contents of the
    MDT 2012 DeploymentShare$\Boot\LiteTouchpe_x86.iso to a FAT32-formatted volume.

  • How Can I boot from USB - Portege A200

    Hi,
I've got an Portege A200 which is only a couple of years old but the hard drive no longer works. Initially I thought this was due to corrupting the boot record on the drive but after attempting to replace the hard drive (with two different drives) it is showing an IDE #0 error upon boot. I have therefore come to the conclusion the IDE controller chip has died.
In order to get the latop working I burned a cd with the ubunto ISO. This boots ok but due to only have 512Mb RAM the system is somewhat limited and anything installed is lost everytime I reboot.
I have now bought a 2Gb flash drive and installed ubuntu onto this. My next problem is that there appears to be no boot from USB HDD or USB Memory Stick option in the bios.
The possible options that I can think of are:
    1) Upgade the bios so it supports boot from memory stick (although no HDD so not sure how I could reflash the BIOS or if there is even a BIOS upgrade that would support this functionality)
    2) Create a cd which starts the boot process then tells the system to continue booting from the usb drive (Is this possible and does anyone know where I might be able to obtain such software)
    3) Boot from CD but use the USB to retain any information saved / any installs etc (I guess similar to option 2 except the cd would manage the whole OS and the USB would just hold 'additional' information)
If there are any other options that anyone can think of I am happy to give them a go. Seems a shame to have to chuck a laptop that isn't particularly old because the IDE controller chip has failed on the mobo.
I apppriciate any help anyone can offer.
    Many thanks,
    Mark

    Hi
First of all I have to say that its not possible to boot from the external USB device like the USB stick, USB CD/DVD drive or USB HDD.
Its possible only to boot from the external USB FDD (diskette) drive
However, not the booting possibilities are clear but I think you have misunderstood the IDE#0 error message. In m opinion the IDE controller is not faulty but only the new HDD is not compatible and not recognized by BIOS.
There are different reasons for this issue
Mostly this error message appears if the HDD master/slave/c-sel settings are not correct.
Usually such settings dont need to be changed or switched on 2.5 HDDs but some HDDs support an jumper which must be set in the right position. But I dont if your HDD supports this
Furthermore the not compatible HDD size could be the reason for such error messages!
So finally I would recommend contacting the ASP in your country to get a new, compatible HDD and to check if the same error persists.
    Good luck

  • How to boot from USB flash drive - Portege R500

    Hi,
I have a Portege R500 running Windows XP, brought about 2 years ago, and recently contracted a worm virus that has infected some of the start up files as the minute I log in it logs out again, even in safe mode! Quickest way I can think of sorting it is to reformat it with the XP recovery disc and reinstall windows.
Problem!! The CD/DVD drive on the laptop stopped working a while ago, have tried pretty much everything in the thread on this site but had no luck.
So my plan was to boot from a USB flash drive and do it that way. However in the boot settings I only have the options of HDD / FDD / CD-ROM / LAN, neither of these will work. Does anyone know how to boot from USB flash drives?
Any help would be really appreciated

    Hi
As far as I know it should be possible to boot from USB FDD
Im not sure if you would be able to boot from USB flash drive but its definitely worth a try
Generally you could try to press F12 button when notebook powers up.
Then a boot menu should appear on the display and you should see all bootable devices.
PS: As far as I know the USB booting was available in ToshibaHWSetup (Toshiba tool which changes the BIOS settings in windows OS.) Therefore I assume booting from USB should be possible.

  • Need to boot from USB device with my Portege 7020ct

    hi!
    i need help!!!
situation: me and my girlfriend go for a long trip on tuesday. we have to work, so we bought a second hand portege 7020ct.
it has no cd or floppy drive. win98 is installed but without drivers for the modem. the infra-red can locate other computers, but is not able to connect.
so the onliest thing i have is one usb slot.
i want to install win2000 or at least put some data on the hard drive.
so i need to use my external cd drive or a usb stick. the problem is, the system (usb slot) found the external drive and the usb sticks, but i need to install some drivers to get them ready! but how???? --> no internet, no floppy, no internal cd, no infra red....
    what can i do????
i tried to get into the bios to find out, if it is possible to boot from the usb slot, to perhaps get the external drive runnin and then install win2000.
but i can´t find out how to enter the bios!!!! ...but i´m not sure if this will work.
how can i get into the bios?
do anybody has an idea what i can do? how can i get drivers into the system?
how can i get the external drive runnin or the usb sticks`??
please! i need very quick help, cause tomorrow is my last day...
    thanks to everybody in advance,
    deko

    Hi Deko,
Pressing the <esc> button on power up takes you to the BIOS settings.
Installing the drivers could be difficult. I have a 7010CT and there's no option to boot from USB (just floppy - hard disk - cdrom - lan). I don't think Windows98 supports USB sticks without extra drivers. I upgraded from Windows98 to Windows2000 by using an external PCMCIA cdrom and starting the installer from Windows98. Maybe you could try a PCMCIA network card of try to find a floppy disk for the Portege.

  • Boot from USB with A30

I have a Thinkpad A30 , Pentium 3 933 MHZ, 256 MB, and I would like to know if it's possible to boot from USB. I have an external HDD with windows XP installed (a clone from the internal HDD which doesn't work well anymore). In bios are all sort of options, like booting from network , booting from CD, from HDD, and from removable drive. But I didn't succeed to boot from that external HDD. It keeps saying : no operating system , or something.

    Welcome to the forum!
Sadly said, older notebooks with USB 1.1 ports often don't tend to really support the booting from an external USB hdd drive.
Maybe things look a little bit different with a good cardbus USB 2.0 port card, but I can't tell you if those will then support for sure the booting from an USB hdd. - BTW, did you performed your tryouts with a mostly A30 actual BIOS-version?

  • Booting From USB with Yoga Pro 2

I am unable to boot any OS from USB on the Yoga 2.
I turned on Legacy Boot and changed the BIOS settings,
Yet I still cant boot from USB.
THe Linux OS starts booting, then the screen turns black and nothing happens.
Could this be a video or graphics driver issue possibly? Maybe drivers need an update?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This thing is driving me nuts.
the USB i tried to boot from works fine on my PC, so i know the USB is NOT the problem.

Check your boot image properties, since by default only LAN and MASS Storage drivers will be injected into the boot image. an USB2Ethernet adapter may be an entire different driver class.
That's why, I create a folder in out-of-box drivers called "WinPE" and create a selection profile called "WinPE", and on my Deployment Share properties "WinPE" tab/pane, I select that selection profile, and check "Include
all drivers from the selection profile", this way you can be assured, that all drivers in that particular WinPE folder, are injected in the boot image, even if the driver class is not "network" or "mass storage"
Cheers! and let me know if it has worked out for you! Thanks!

  • Re: Tecra A9-12H - booting from usb

    Hi,
does anyone know if the tercra A9 can boot from USB?
    Thanks.

Did you check the BIOS options???
As far as I know you can boot only from primary HDD, ODD, Network (LAN), SD-CARD or USB FDD (diskette).
I think you want to boot a Windows, Linux, other OS from a USB memory stick. Am I right?
    Unfortunately this is not possible.

  • W541: Cannot boot from USB created with Windows 8 create recovery drive

Hello, I have just bought a W541, and want to install the supplied Windows 8 on an m.2 SSD.I created the recovery drive on a USB following the instructions in the User Manual, but the recover image procedure under Advanced Options cannot find the USB.During the re-image step, it fails to find a drive with a valid image.I've confirmed using the command window available under the Advanced Options that the USB is mounted Searching these forums, I found the following, which describes a similar problem for a T540:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-W-Series-Laptops/Lenovo-W540-won-t-boot-from-USB-flash-drive-ThinkPad/m-p/1500902#M39097 This implies that the USB should first be formatted with FAT32 before use, which cannot work, since FAT32 only has a maximum 4 GB  partition, whereas when copied to the USB, the Windows 8 recovery drive occupies nearly 10 GB. Is it possible to specify the boot order from insde the BIOS? I could only find an entry under Security about UEFI boot enabling, nothing about the boot order. Can anyone help?Paul

Hello Z, thanks for the reply. I tried another USB drive, and created a recovery drive, as before. This time it was able to detect the presence of the drive when I tapped on the Enter key when starting up, followed by the F12 key.  However, there are still problems when I clicked through the options:Choose the languageChoose your keyboard layoutTroubleshootAdvanced optionsSystem Image Recovery At this point I am offered the option Windows 8.1.When I select this, it indicates it is scanning for system disks, and then displays the the pop-up window "Re-image your computer": "Windows cannot find a system image on this computer" Why does this happen if it detected that there was a Windows 8.1 installation on the USB? I've spent a whole day now on this. Luckily, if I can't solve it, the machine is new and I can send it back to Lenovo, and ask to have it re-imaged with the downgrade option to Windows 7.

  • T520 cannot boot from USB?

I just got the latest T520-4242
I want to use a kind of system installation or maintainance tool in a USB flash driver to boot my laptop.
The USB flash disk is a SanDisk Cruze 8G, but when I enter F12 at the beginning of the boot period, the menu of the boot option cannot recognize this flash disk. I've tried several computers to boot from this usb disk, they all booted well.
I have another USB flash disk SanDisk 8G, it can be recognized during the boot menu option. So it's very weird.

    hey icenimbus,
now that is strange since a different flash disk of the same brand and size could be recognized.
is both of them "cruze" or different? have you tried with different USB ports ?
if it is possible, load up your unit and get into the bios and set it to boot from USB only . See if this makes and difference and do try with a lower capacity flash drive.

When you start-up your device press F12 to enter boot menu. Choose USB option and press ENTER.
    This should work.
I've tried to install windows 7 from my flash drive, when I press F12 in the boot menu only shows usb, but I don't see my device name for usb.
    It's like this:
    Boot Menu
    USB (empty no device name)
    HDD [device name]
    LAN [device name]
    It should be like this:

  • Boot from USB-stick on old thinkpad?

    Hi,
I have an old Thinkpad 600E. It runs arch linux (and does this really fine), but I just want to try something new...
The thinkpad does not support booting from USB. I wonder if it is possible to boot a linux-distro on an usb-stick (like puppy) using GRUB on the thinkpad's hard drive - maybe someone has done this before or hasn an idea...?
    pseb

For older hardware like yours, I would give SliTaz a shot (http://www.slitaz.org/en). It's very small (25MB) and looks very promising. It has had good reviews on linux.com and distrowatch (see http://www.linux.com/feature/140573).
