Booting into Boot Camp gives a blank screen

Hello there, nice to meet you all.
I have an old mid-2010 MacBook Pro 13", and a while back I set up bootcamp on it so I could run Windows 7 and Mac OS. I prefer to have both for various reasons.
But just yesterday, I was experiencing difficulties with using the Windows partition of the drive. It constantly froze and gave the message "Display driver has crashed and has successfully recovered."
It was bugging me, so I closed down all my programs and applications, then restarted my computer. But after I held down the [alt]/[option] and selected BootCamp, the computer screen just went to black instead of the windows loading screen. I thought it may just be taking a while, but I waited over thirty minutes and there was no sign of it starting back up, or even any kind of change at all. I tried turning up the brightness, adjusting the volume, and trying to click around for maybe a response. But no such luck.
I forced a shut down on my Mac and let it start up naturally to its Mac OS. Everything is working perfectly on that end.
Does anyone have any idea what could be going on here, or if there's a fix?
And if not (meaning I would have to wipe the windows OS and reinstall bootcamp) does anyone know if there's a way to access the %appdata% folder from the Mac OS side? I have all my important files saved, but I had some important tabs open in my web browser (firefox) that I'd prefer not to lose, and I'm fairly sure that data is kept in that folder, but it's hidden on the Windows side.
Thank you for reading through all that, any answers at all are greatly appreciated!

Your Mac (from MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) - Technical Specifications) indicates a nVidia GT320m. If you have Windows set to automatically update and any driver updates are pushed to the Mac, you are likely to see this behavior. Can you boot Windows into Safe Mode? If yes, you should rollback the GPU driver (check what version you have before you rollback) and install the BC driver instead.
On a Mac, if the BC drivers are installed (and you are not on Yosemite), both OSes have read-only access to partitions of the other OS. For example, in OS X, you should be able to open the Bootcamp volume in OS X Finder and see your files. The reverse is also true, and you can see the OS X files in Windows Explorer.

  • Boot camp hangs at blank screen

I have an early 2011 MBP 15 with Lion and all the latest updates install.  I removed the super drive and installed an OCZ 120 GB SSD.  My current configuration is 120 GB SDD installed in place of the 750GB HDD and the super drive is replaced with an optibay that holds the 750 GB HDD.  I have Lion install on the SSD and want top install Windows 7 using boot camp.  I ran the Boot Camp Assistant, created a 100 GB partition on the 750 GB HDD and a Windows partition with a full Windows 7 installation disc inserted in an external USB super drive.  I click install (or begin, I forget) and my MBP rebooted as it should.  I saw the gray screen and the activity light flashing on my external USB super drive, but the screen went blank and simply hang with a flashing cursor.  At this point the Windows installer should begin, but it does not.  I tried a partition on the SSD with the same results.  I checked the Windows 7 installation disk on a PC to insure that it works and is bootable (It worked fine on the PC).
I've been working on this for several days and googled dozens of web sites with no solution that worked.  Any help worked be greatly appreciated.  TIA!

    I've been thinking,
    since you have two harddrives,
    1. restore the windows7.iso onto the hdd,
    2. bootcamp and partition the windows part. on your ssd
    3. connect your hdd, and fire up your mbp with your hdd holding option key
    4. install windows to your windows partition
    5. finalise it
    6. delete your windows7.iso
BAM you have your ssd+hdd dual system.
this is just my thought, not sure if it'll work or not since i still haven't recieved my optibay yet

  • I can't get into safari!! When ever I try to go into safari, it's a blank screen

I can't get into safari!! When ever I try to go into safari, it's a blank screen and then it goes back into the homepage

Sorry you did not get an answer to this, but I do note you are apparently now using firefox 10.0.2.
One reason for the rapid release cycle that Firefox has now adopted is to keep firefox secure and up to date. You may even find Firefox itself offers some of the facilities that the troublesome AVG offers. And MS offer free AV with MS security essentials.
AVG often seems to cause problems with firefox.

  • Computer won't boot into OS X.... blank screen

I installed some new RAM recently and had some problems. I needed to reset the nvram after it wouldn't recognize some of the ram, so I pressed Option, Command, O, and F upon rebooting to get into Open Firmware. The computer went to the screen with the circle and the slash through it. I reset by holding the power button. Now it boots to a blank screen.
During all of this I can still hear the startup sound.
One problem with possible solutions is that my bluetooth keyboard is not communicating with my Mac for some reason, so key presses are out of the question.
I tried resetting the PMU by pressing the button inside the computer, but nothing happened.
    Any suggestions?

    Ok,
After many boot attempts, the computer finally went to the Open Firmware dialog screen.
When I get my hands on a wired keyboard, should I reset nvram using the dialog command? Or should I just tell the computer to boot into OS X? After my first attempt to reset nvram, I'm a little suspicious of the whole process.
    Thanks for your help, everyone.

  • Boot camp stuck on black screen

Trying to install windows 8 using bootcamp but it is stuck on a black screen

    Hi fellow Mac buddie,
I just zapped the PRAM, and also reset the SMC switch on the mother board.....no luck.
In refenece to the hybrid SSD drive, I've already taken that one out, put in a fresh 3.5" drive, formatted and installed  a fresh clean version of Lion OS, and then attempted the Boot Camp install using Lion with the newest Boot Camp version (3.1 or 3.2) Please see my original post above.
    Same issue, black BIOS screen.
Also tried Boot Camp Windows install on a second drive in drive bay 2 (an option now in Lion's Boot Camp)
    same issue, black BIOS screen.
Lastly, I've tried all these interations using my three different Windows install disks (XP, Vista, Windows7).
XP is a "full install" disk, Vista and Windows7 are upgrade disks. But I've had XP installed previously using Boot Camp with no problem. So I'm confused I can't even install XP.
As another option, I went to a friend who has a PC, and I installed Windows 7 on a new hard drive. I'm about to install that in drive bay 2, reboot while holding down "option", and see if I can boot directly into that disk.
That's a workaround, as is VMWare Fusion which I have and Windows7 works fine as a virtual machine.
But when something doesn't work the way it's supposed to (in this case Boot Camp), it bugs me makes me want to know why it doesn't. I'll report back with regard to the 2nd bay Windows7 hard drive install.

  • Mac Mini / Boot Camp / XP Pro / Black Screen with DVI display

Boot camp partitioned the hard drive on my new Mac Mini and restarted after I clicked Start Installation, but came up to a black screen. No blue installation screen, nothing.
I downed it with the power button and unhooked the display from the DVI port. I went and got a VGA cable instead and hooked it up via the DVI/VGA adapter and started up again with the Option key. Chose the Windows XP Pro SP2 installation CD and it went through the Windows installation OK.
The trouble is this Norwood Micro HD17A (17" widescreen) looks TERRIBLE on VGA whether I run Windows or Mac OS, because there's no selection for 1280 x 768 resolution. It looks great on DVI both on Mac OS and in Windows once I get XP Pro to load.
After logging in to Windows I can unhook the VGA cable and adapter and reconnect the monitor using the DVI. The moment I do this Windows looks great, with native resolution supported and everything's fine. But this is a terribly cumbersome login procedure!
It seems that XP Pro has no trouble communicating with this display, provided I can get Windows to load. I contacted Apple Support but they say it's a problem with Windows, so I submitted a support request to Microsoft. I'm waiting for them to tell me it's a problem with Boot Camp or the firmware.
I've seen descriptions of very similar problems on other forums (123macmin.com) and here, but no solutions anywhere. Anybody know what's happening here?

Update: Microsoft says it's probably a problem with the hardware:
    ==========================================
Mark, I would like to explain that the issue should be related to the display card driver. We still need to contact the Apple support to verify if their machine has been tested under the XP environment when DVI or AVG is in use. This issue is related to Hardware and cannot be resolved from a Windows XP standpoint. Our Windows XP Support Team deals mainly with issues related to the Windows XP Operating System. Thus, we are not the best resource for this issue.
Please understand the problem may be beyond our support boundary and, therefore, our help to troubleshoot this issue is limited. Let’s contact the manufacturer who will be more familiar with their products. To contact them, please access the following link:

Meanwhile I sent Redmond the System Information in an NFO file. More as this develops!

I have been getting blue screen alot while I am playing video game by using wireless. If I use ethernet cable, there is no problem at all.
Once I restart no problem at all, but it will happen again after a few hours.
One thing when I start window, it does say found new hardware and ask me for driver for Broadcom adapter. It does have one already but I don't know why it asks me again.
    Blue Screen error : bcmwl5.sys
    SO my question is ...
How do i fix it? I want to use wireless.
If it is as simple as update driver, where can I download it.
    Thanks

  • Booting Windows 7 in Boot Camp shows a black screen with a blinking cursor

I am trying to restore a DMG image of a Windows 7 Boot Camp partition back to Boot Camp. (I know that I should have used Winclone, but I didn't have that option because the drive was already dying and so I couldn't even access OS X anymore.)
So far, I've gotten to the point where I can start up the computer, hold Option, choose Windows, but then when it boots up, it shows a black screen with a blinking cursor.
I've tried a few things so far to try and fix this, none of which has worked. I have used the Windows 7 install DVD to run `bootrec` and all its possible arguments. I've ran `chkdsk C: /b`. I've also used the "Automatically fix startup problems" button, of course, as well.
Anyone know what else I could try to fix this?

Already tried those steps. Did not work. I finally fixed the problem by using iPartition and running "Write MBR Boot Code" and then renaming the Windows 7 partition and hitting "Go". The latter step causes iPartition to fix any problems that might exist in the partition. After renaming it, I just renamed it back to what it was before. (It was "Windows 7", I renamed to "Windows 7-02", then renamed it back to "Windows 7" afterward.)

  • Boot Camp Windows 7 Black Screen After Graphic Driver Installation

    Hi,
I have MacBook air (2012 model i think). I tried to install windows 7 64 bit using bootcamp. On the first windows boot and before installing boot camp drivers windows was fine. After installing bootcamp drivers and windows restart the windows came up to a black screen and stuck forever. When I uninstall graphic driver (intel HD 4000), windows is good again. Tried to reinstall different graphic drivers versions - didn't work. searched internet everywhere and didn't find any solution.
    please help!

I have solved this issue now but seem to have encountered another one. I solved the above issue simply by keep on trying time and time again, partitioning the hard drive and trying to install windows 7.
Anyway, I have encountered this error: windows setup could not apply the configuration set. The WINDOWS folder cannot be found.
    Please help!

  • MacBook will only boot up to a blank screen

I have an old black MacBook (model A1181) that has been rock solid for the past eight years up until last week.  My computer locked up, so I did a hard restart, it then booted up to a grey screen with a file and question mark.  So I attempted to reset the PRAM without success and then I attempted to boot it up from the original install disc but it stopped even booting to the grey screen and was just a blank screen.  A few years ago I doubled the RAM, so in an attempt to rule out the RAM i put the originals back in, but no luck still just a blank screen and I can hear what I believe in the disc drive engaging.  So, after some forum surfing I thought I may have been the hard drive.  I order a new drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279 and installed it but it is still a no go, just the blank screen.  Ultimately I don't care about the data loss I just want the computer back up and running, if you have any ideas let me know.

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then we'll move to the next step.
    To Perform A Hard Reset
Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds); (if the computer doesn't power on, move to the next step)
Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.
Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.
Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.
Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

My internet connection is fine, and when I open up iTunes everything comes up right, my iPod works perfectly. But when I click on the iTunes Store it only loads halfway and gives me a blank screen. HELP!

I suggest anyone who visits this thread redirect to https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3223139?start=0&tstart=0. It has the two most popular solutions and anyone with ongoing issues can discuss and/or form an unruly mob there.
