Booting OS X from old HDD, then using bootcamp?

Situation: I installed an SSD into my mid-2010 Macbook Pro. I have the old HDD that still has my old, complete OS X partition installed. Can I boot up into OS X and install Windows 7 via Bootcamp onto the HDD, and then can I boot Windows from that external drive? Basically I need to run Windows, but don't want to install a new partition onto my limited SSD space.

Move the SSD out and put the HDD back.
Or install Windows to the SSD and then use a system clone or restore to put it on the hdd - most likely it would uses the entire hdd.
Use a VM for windows.

Error in Restoring the HDD partition using BootCamp assist

This is regarding error in restoring the HDD partition using BootCamp assist. Yesterday I was trying to instal Windows 8.1 Pro on my Mac Mini.
Started had installing windows software using Boot Camp assist using the USB flash drive
Took the back of Windows Support software from Apple store
Did the HDD partitioning for Windows,
Then went ahead to install the windows and automatically machine restarted.
After few minutes started installing Windows... and stuck for more than 3hrs at by displaying the blue screen of Windows installation... and inactive
I had restarted the using start button, and finally I could not able to install Windows.
Then I got black screen with message ' No boot disk, please insert boot the disk and press any key to restart'
I have restarted using start button by holding 'Alt' key
Finally I could able to started machine with OS X
Now I wanted to remove the partition created above, using Boot Camp assist, but it is not able to do it. There is error message ' Error while restoring the hard disk'
Any help, how to remove this partitioning? Also in every restart I need to hold 'Alt' key to boot the machine with OS X.

if you've tried and cannot remove the partition with boot camp assistant, you'll have to open disk utility and reformat the partition there - choose mac journaled and then try to combine this partition back into your existing Mac partition

Install the required Windows drivers: Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033. Download this link preferably from Windows. Otherwise, download onto a FAT formatted USB disk from which you can copy to your Windows system.

Transfering from old HDD to new HDD

I have a MacBook with the standard 80GB HDD and I purchased a new 160GB HDD. My question is, how do transfer everything I have from my 80GB to my new 160GB including prefs, settings, and files. I didn't want to reinstall all my software and reset all my prefs and settings. I have an external HDD that I can use as a "backup disc." What program(s) should I use and/or method(s)?

I did exactly the same thing recently and did as suggested above....
Get the shareware version of superduper. Rename the external HDD the same as your current internal HDD, then get superduper to copy the internal to the external, ensure you select "Make copy bootable" option. Next swop the old internal oto the new one and re-boot selecting the external as the boot disc. The machine should start up exactly as it did using the old internal HDD. Rename the new HDD the same as the old one and get Superduper to copy everything from the external to the new internal, again making sure the make bootable bit is ticked. Now re-start the machine from the new internal and if it goes like mine did, you won't know the difference, other than having a bigger internal HDD.
I'm no Mac/techie expert, far from it, but I got it all to work first time (thanks to advice gained on here.
Finally, as your feeling all clever with yourself, go register Superduper (it's really cheap and it's just saved you a lot of hassle) and then set it up to make regular "smart" backups to the already correctly named external, then you have a complete back up incase things go wrong in the future.
It's a good idea to not touch the old external HDD for at least a few weeks, months is better, just in case something goes goes wrong further down the line and you need to re-install the old HDD to get something to work.

BTW- I've no idea why you need to rename the external the same as the old internal, a few just suggested it, and I did it, and the copy worked fine, I've heard of others who did exactly the same but didn't rename the external and had less luck, so best to do it!

Migration from OLD HDD to LARGER NEW HDD

Hi experts, I am deciding to upgrade my G4 cube HDD from 20G to 120G. The point is that how can I migrate my entire OS 10.3.9 ,application and other personal stuffs to new HDD? Get a Firewire enclosure for your old hard drive. When you remove the drive install it in the Firewire enclosure. Install the new drive. Boot from your OS X installer disc and use Disk Utility to partition and format the new drive. Connect the Firewire drive and boot the computer from the external drive by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the large right arrow button. After your computer boots from the external drive open Disk Utility and clone the external drive to the new internal drive:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

Transferring from Old HDD to SSD

So, while I'm not a beginner with software development on Linux or using standard UNIX tools, I am very new with ArchLinux. I've been running a setup of mine for a few months on a hard drive in my old Fujitsu T5010 laptop. I bought a Crucial 256 GB SSD and installed it into the laptop.
If you don't want to wade through stuff, skip through the 'My Journey' down to 'My Problem'.

My Journey:
Using rsync, I made a backup of what I thought was a collection of files that were from installations of packages, my edits to configuration files, etc. I've had my misgivings about this method, but followed through with the suggestion on the wiki article.
Anyway, attempt one, I use a net installation and install the barebones (just the base packages) along with pmount and rsync. My backup of my HDD was made to an external HDD I had sitting around in NTFS format (probably not a good idea). So, after ArchLinux was up and running happily, I used pmount to mount my external HDD and rsync to transfer things back to my machine. This caused ArchLinux to not be able to access my SSD on boot up and quite a few other issues that I should have written down... but didn't.
So, attempt two, I wipe the SSD again and install ArchLinux. This time, I was going to start by restoring the home directory of my main user account, rcsvt. Of course, it was late at night and I pointed it at my root directory by mistake causing a ton of junk to be thrown in it. Not thinking properly, I reformatted... again.
So, attempt three, ArchLinux is set up and the home directory of rcsvt is successfully copied and I readded the account with adduser, allowing it to not copy over the skeleton files and instead use the existing ones. Things seemed to be okay. I had also followed the suggestion of using the following code to get a list of packages to reinstall:
$ pacman -Qqe | grep -vx "$(pacman -Qqm)" > Packages
$ pacman -Qqm > Packages.aur
# xargs -a Packages pacman -S --noconfirm --needed
My Problem:
Alright, so, what is my actual problem? Well, I have the feeling that permissions for some of the files copied (or installed with the packages) might be off. Or, maybe it's the permissions of my user account. This is been made especially clear when I've tried to use cabal to install xmobar from scratch to include extra plugins that I used with my configuration. Here's the example:

Log from root
This seems to work with root permissions, but not with the user rcsvt. On my old HDD, my user account was able to do this with no issues.
So, is there something that stands out that I've done wrong by using rsync to copy over my /home/rcsvt directory and reinstalling all of my old packages using the list I generated? I'd really, really hate to have to wipe my system again if it's gone bonky with permissions... but it just doesn't seem like anything would have affected it.
Is there a better way to do this so that my new SSD has the same setup as my old HDD? I know that directly transferring everything is a terrible idea because of changes in hardware... so, I'm at a loss as to what could be done aside from a file backup, which seems to have not worked nearly as well as I would have hoped. I've still got the old HDD, by the way, and a cable to convert SATA to USB. So, I can hook it up to my machine, if that gives me any options.
I've read that NTFS has issues with file permissions; so, should I use rsync directly from my old HDD that was ext4 if I connect it with a SATA to USB?
Other information:
Using visudo, I uncommented the wheel permissions for sudo with no password needed so my user account of rcsvt could use sudo without having to type in a password each time. Aside from that, I haven't made any attempts to alter other files back to the way they were on my old system. As for the old system, I barely edited any files aside from adding some startup modules and editing the global vimrc file.
I really wish I could run my old system as it was because it had everything just where I wanted it.

Yeah, I've still got it. By everything, do you literally mean from the root directory (not /root/ but /)? Wouldn't that cause a lot of issues? If not, I'm willing to give it a shot. I'll just have to remember to update fstab again.

I actually did that as the only user I had on the old drive was rcsvt. There seems to be something of issue with either that account's directory or the way the packages were installed from my list.

I assume you want to install the OS (which one???) on the internal mSATA 32GB SSD?
This mSATA SSD is used for caching (hybrid boot) in order to boot Windows 8 faster.
I would recommend you to install the second OS on the HDD.
For that you should create new partition which could be used for OS installation.
Then boot from the Windows installation disk and install the 2nd OS on the new created partition.

Restoring iMessages from old HDD to new SSD Mavericks 10.9.5

I recently upgraded my late 2011 MBP with an SSD and did a clean install of Mavericks. Took the old HDD out and put in a USB caddy for external usage and to restore my files.
One thing I'm having trouble with though is iMessage. I don't seem to be able to restore the messages from my old HDD to my new SSD.
Just wondering if this can be done and if so how?

Sorry it is so big but I need the width to show the names of folders in the Path Bar.
There is no way to "Merge" the Chat.db items
However you could keep you new Archive Folder and move the Contents of that from the Old folder (all the Dated Folders of old Chats) so that the Archive is a combo of old and new.
The Alias need to be recreated as it points to the "top" folder. If you Move the Folder then the Alias will "Follow" and be pointing to the External Disk.

My computer died and I have a new one and I want to transfer my itunes Library to the HDD of the new computer? I have the means to connect the old HDD to my new computer through the USB.

It sounds like you have music that you want to transfer from your iPad to your new computer. You can use the Transfer Purchases function to get your iTunes and App Store purchases copied to your computer:

Any media that you had imported to your previous iTunes library and synced to your device will have to be re imported to iTunes, and synced over again.

Permissions error when restoring itunes library from old hdd's TM backup to new SSD OS X Music folder...

I got my self a new SSD and installed Lion in it from the internet. I tried copy pasting the itunes library from the most current backup in the TM drive that was used to backup the old hdd. I keep on getting "not enough permission" error for every single file. This same happens when I restore using Time Machine by navigating to the foler using the option "Browse Other Backup Disks"
Note: There is no encryption problem here AFAIK cause i never used encryption on any of my drives.
Please help me restore iTunes library and iPhoto library form the backup. Thanks.

Migrating iWeb From Old HDD

I installed a new HDD and migrated all data, applications etc using Migration Assistant. That was 3 weeks ago and everythingh has worked fine until today when I went to use iWeb after the migration. Discovered that the icon looked different and it would appear to launch the app but no website visible to work on and most menu items grayed out. Getting info on the app revealed only 132MB. Going to the old HDD I see iWeb has normal icon and is 410MB in size. Clearly the Migration Assistant did not transfer all the files.
Is it okay to simply copy the old iWeb copy to the new HDD? Are there other files such as Application support etc that need to be dragged over too or is it enough to just copy the app itself?

It is such a great looking site that I will be very sorry when Apple forces me to shut it down in June. There are too many important features like hit counters etc that do not work when publishing to a third party that I will scrap this one and start again.
After the demise of iCards a few years ago and now Mobile Me galleries, and iWeb sites I will never again use an Apple service for anything serious. They can't be trusted which is sad.
From the activity level in this iWeb forum it does seem there are a lot of people using iWeb that will be affected.

The only way I know is you buy an external HDD case where you can put in the old HDD. Connect the old HDD that is the case with the USB cable to your new notebook and then you can copy your documents and pictures.
Such cases are not expensive and external HDDs are very practical.

How to boot Powerbook G4 from USB hard drive using Mcintosh v10.5.2 install

Well I am Rider and I have been a mac user for at least 8 years. By far these OS's are the most advanced I have ever seen and it blows every other OS out of the water. My dad bought a Powerbook G4 8 years ago and it lasted 3 years till the hard drive crashed. My dad had it taken out and we still have the Powerbook G4 under the bed. When we bought a new macbook that came with the install disk 10.5.2, I was wondering if there was any way to use a USB 16gb Flash Drive as a hard drive and start up disk.
I have tried sticking the Install Disk in the G4 and after it says choose language for primary install, it says 'Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer'. It gives a few utilities to use such as Disk Utility, Start up Disk, Net Utility, etc.
So if anybody knows how I can boot a G4 from a USB using Mac OS X install disk 10.5.2, *PLEASE HELP*.

How do i get my itunes library from old HDD to link in from the new location on the new HDD

My old HDD died and I had to install a new one. Fortuantely I had recent backup which I transferred to the D drive on my new HDD. I relioaded iTunes but can't figure out how to link the files on the D drive to the newly installed iTunes 10.X
Any help appreciated.

2: Click the keys: cmd+3 to view in Columns-Modus
3: Navigate trough the Columns to:
User/your name/Music/iTunes
4:Select the folder "iTunes" (one click) and click "cmd+C" (Copy)
5:Go to the same folder at the new computer,delete the folder iTunes and
click "cmd+V" (Paste)
6:Go to Trash in the Dock and with right mouse-click empty the Trash.
7: Read "MacOS-X for dummies" ,it´s very userful for new users.
