Booting Problem - WD40GB HDD

Hi
Not sure which board. Just found N1996 on board. Processor P3 733MHz.
Previously using Maxtor 40GB(Win98) not problem. Now change WD 40GB (Win98). Sometimes it detect and can boot. But sometimes it can't detect. Hav to reboot few times until it detect the hdd.
Anyone can help? Thanks

Western Digital hard drives if by themselves need to be jumperless. So unless you have another device on the primary chain make sure the jumper is removed.
Good Luck

Satellite A105-S3611 Recovery DVD won't boot - reverts to HDD boot.
My laptop has had a virus but is now clean but has some lingering effects.  So I decided to use the Recovery and Applications/Drivers Media to reinstall the system to factory settings.  Pressing the "C" key at the Toshiba screen did not work to choose the boot divice but pressing F12 did work.  The problem is the system still boots using the hard disk.  I've gone into the boot process and changed the order of boot devices to make sure the CD\DVD drive is chosen first but it does not boot from the CD/DVD.  It looks like it begins to read the DVD but the boot process is not executed from there.
    Questions:
    1. Can I install the system using windows explorer to execute the autorun.ini on the CD/DVD?
    2. Is there another option for getting the system to install from the CD/DVD?
    Thank you in advance
    Roger

I read somewhere on the forum that updating the BIOS may solve the problem.  So I updated the system BIOS from v1.40 to v2.0.  Then I reinserted the newly purchased recovery DVD and the boot process began with the DVD booting but ended with the message "WRONG MACHINE".
I ejected the recovery DVD that I just purchased and inserted the recovery DVD that came with the machine.  This time the machine booted and installed the factory image of the operating system as it should have the first time.
So I am now recovered and the machine works as it did originally.  So the moral of the story is you don't necessarily have to buy the new recovery DVD but just update the system BIOS and then try to use the recovery DVD that came with your machine.

  • OS X 10.3 Boot Problems

I have an iMac G3 333 - tray load. I've got 256mb of ram in it and I just received a set of 10.3 installation disks - the black label ones - 4 in the set. My firmware is also at least v3.0, if not 3.0.1 or something like that.
The original HDD was 6gb, so I swapped it out for a 20gb model from an old linux machine.
I formatted the drive with zeros, partitioned two pieces, one a little under 7gb and the other with the balance.
Installed 10.3 with no errors that I could see in the log, but when it comes time to restart the system and boot from the HDD all I get is the flashing question mark and mac logo on a folder (missing OS?) icon.
I've tried all the different fixes I can find in the disk utility. Tried a second re-partitioning, tried a third install of OS X. Tried the repair permissions, the repair disk, etc. All finish fine with no errors noted.
Boot still gives me the same icon. I haven't been successful with any key combos at boot either.
I used a paperclip to push the lower of the two little switches in the side panel at boot and was able to receive a command line and the following error with the use of a ?.
    "Default Catch! code=300 at %SRR0:ff80a0c4 %SRR1:0000b030"
I've tried finding more info about the default catch error, and the SRR part (found a bad link somewhere) but haven't gotten anywhere.
I'm pretty new with this sort of detail on a mac, though I've been using pcs for years. My only theory at this point is that the installation of Linux on this drive in the past has left some cobwebs - likely in the form of a boot loader on the drive, and I don't know how to get rid of them.
Any other ideas? My next try, I think is to swap the HDDs back (the old one still has 9.2.2) and check for hardware problems, but I don't even know what to use for that.
    Any help is appreciated.
    iMac G3 333 Blueberry   Mac OS X (10.3)

    Ok, problem solved.
    I feel like an idiot.
The jumper on the HDD was set incorrectly. I remember looking at it when I installed it in the iMac. I thought, "where's the little chart to tell me which jumper is which...oh well, it was working great in the linux box, must be set correctly." (you know what they say about assumptions...)
Evidently not. At the Open Firmware prompt, I listed the devices, the hard drive wasn't there. That was my tip off. I popped the thing open, and changed the jumper (taking the time to remove the HDD from it's tray, and look at the PCB to find the correct jumper #), put the whole thing back together and this time wasn't greeted by the flashing mac face & question mark. It actually asked me for disc 2, and now 3.
    What a relief.
Thanks to everyone for their help. I've still got another new motherboard battery on it's way. I'll keep that for a while, or at least until I open the box up again.

  • A very strange boot problem not yet found in the User Forums

    Hi
I know you guys are fed up with all the booting problems, but this one is the strangest one I've yet come across.
I'm putting a PC together to function as an extra render for my 3D animations. Here is the specs as follows.
    865PE Neo2-P Mobo
    Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz Processor
2 x 256 DDR 400MHz Memory modules (two of the exact same make and model)
    300w PSU
    60GB HDD Maxdor
    nVidia nForce 5600
    here is the problem.
It goes past the post, but then the system stops there. It does not go to boot at all.
In the top of the screen below the memory testing and above the HDD and DVD Ram listings it displays as follows:
DEL -> Bios, F12 - Boot Menu etc.
when i press any of keys listed there, that line changes accordingly to the function I selected.
I can get into the BIOS.
But the Motherboard does not boot any further, it just stays there.
I tried diffrent memory, CPU, Powersupply etc, but to no avail.
(I disabled the QUICK BOOT options to see what problems it may give, but it lists none what so ever.)
On the motherboard, where the DIMM2 starts and the MSI CoreCell chip, to above the IDE1 connector to the full length of the IDE connectors, it looks like the transistors/chips connections has a kind of plaque, it does not shine like the rest. Could that be the problem? How can I clean it?
Please help, this is sort of urgent!!!!!!

    Disconnect hard & optical drives........
    Power up system.
Do you still have freeze on post? (Start up)
I would also concur with Bas, 300w psu no go.
Intel P4 478 2.4 and above Northwood processors are very power hungry. You would be advise to look for PSU with at least 24amps on the +12V rail....... (Enermax 465 and some 365's or the new Corsair VX 450)

  • Satellite A660 - USB boot problems after BIOS update

    Hello,
I own a Toshiba Satellite A660 and recently have update the BIOS to the latest version (1.80). Since then the notebook will freeze on the boot screen (the one with the Toshiba logo) whenever a USB flash memory is attached.
It works without the flash memory connected and also if I connect it after I enter the boot menu or the BIOS setup. I can even boot from it like this.
As far as I am concerned this is a serious regression. Is there any way I can downgrade the BIOS version, or any other way to fix this issue ? I rely heavily on external USB drives.
    Regards,
    Claudiu.

I too am having problems with my A660 since upgrading to 1.80 bios - the HDD/SD utility, the pc health monitor and half the other toshiba utilities no longer work because they can't recognize the bios and actually tell me this... I get an error message telling me ''can't get bios type''...
On top of this I get the boot problem as well - I have to unplug half of my USB devices to get the laptop to boot properly...
And now - one month into owning my new A660 - after a hard drive failure, a problem with the Broadcom internal wireless adaptor I now have the internal TV tuner no longer working and have no idea how to fix it...
My gut feeling is that the sooner I can downgrade to the original factory bios the BETTER - and wait for another bios update to come along that is not faulty/buggy...
HOPE someone can help me with this...
    John.

  • Macbookpro a1297 boot problem

I bought an old macbook pro 17 inch a1297 and later found that it did not have hard drive. So I installed a new blank hdd n installed mountain lion. Laptop works fine but with a boot problem. I always have to disconnect the battery connector from the board and reconnect to get it worked. If I do not do this, laptop keeps giving start up tone.
Even when laptop goes to sleep mode, it does not come up. Please help. I will be very grateful.

Hold the option key when powering up. You should then be able to select Windows to boot.

  • S10-3 OS boot problem

    Sorry for my English.
    Config:
    Lenovo S10-3
    RAM:1024Mb
    HDD:  WD 160Gb
    VIDEO ON BORAD: Forgot
    WiFI, CARD SLOT.//
    Case:
I bough this notebook in local PC store of my country Moldavia, Chisinau.
    Mainly there was MeeGo OS.
After few weeks I've installed Windows 7 Starter 32bit from USB, all was ok.
Once my father was played windows cards game such as Solitaire . Etc.
Then he call me and say "Boris your PC is HANG",
so it's really HANG, the game window, mouse, every thing.
I pressed POWER BUTTON, and OS want LOAD.  HANGS ON PROGRESS BAR
So AS i know Live CD such as BartPe e.t.c write it self to memory, right?
I detached HDD, and boot system BartPe... Finally it hands in the same place. PROGRESS BAR
After all of this manipulation, i send my Notebook to that pc store repair center, they sure me that it was problem in HDD and they replaced to 320Gb but not installed any OS on it.
When I came back, the problem is the same HANGS ON PROGRESS BAR
    QUESTIONS:
May i be MEMORY problem, OR main board?
Or it possible that MEMORY is BROKEN but WORK
    i see bios, LENOVO LOGO.
    Thanks!

  • IMac not booting after putting HDD in windows machine

Hi, I'm helping a friend repair an iMac G5 ALS (before the iSight ones)
The main problem is that it keeps switching itself off, or just not turning on at all, but i have ordered a new power supply to fix that.
The other problem is that, before I did anything to the mac, I put the hard drive in to my Windows Vista machine to back up important files. But the drive didnt appear in My Computer. So, I right-clicked on My Computer, went to Manage and then the Disk Management service. From here I right-clicked on the Mac drive that had appeared on this menu and then clicked 'Initialize' (I had done this before on a Windows HDD so it seamed like the logical thing to do) but nothing happened. (I now know that it wasn't recognized by Windows because of the different filesystem on macs)
I put the HDD back in the mac and waited for it to start playing ball. Eventually it decided to turn on, but instead of booting, it came up with the flashing question mark folder. I put the Leopard disk I have into the machine and it booted to the Leopard installer.
Using the disk utility I found that the hard drive was there so I verified and repaired it and rebooted but still just the flashing question mark folder comes up.
I'm fairly certain that it was the 'Initializing' that caused all the boot problems.
Any ideas anyone? Cheers in advance.

Welcome to Discussions - you will have to reinitialize the hard drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled) before it can be recognized by the machine. Boot from the Leopard disc and after you have selected English as your language, go to Tools (or whatever it is called, I don't have it in front of me)in the menu bar and select Disk Utility and reformat the drive.

  • GX623 Windows 7 boot problem

Hi guys, i recently have to reinstall OS on my laptop, and now i am facing "really long boot" problem, all drivers are correctly installed (at least i think so), i am fighting with this problem hole day, so i am pretty mad and tired right now, hope you can give me some advice
here is a boot trace picture hope it can share some light on this
i already reinstalled windows seven 3 times today, i tried to update bios to the latest version, even re-flash EC, all with no change :(
to describe this problem, bios post goes OK, no errors, all fast and smooth, as soon i see windows logo animating on my screen my HDD "stops" working (there is no hdd activity for a long period of time) well that can be seen on trace, and then after 90 seconds (at least trace shows that) it starts booting like before, system loads, and everything is working as it should

  • Toshiba booting problem

My Toshiba Pro L300 has a huge problem with booting. I run Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS. When I turn it on, it starts booting but before any sign of Ubuntu shows up, the laptop switches off. After about 3 seconds it turns itself on again. Then the GRUB menu comes up. Here I press ENTER to boot into Ubuntu. Then, after a few seconds, the whole sequence starts again. Finally, after six to eight times, I can log in. Then, after 5 to 10 minutes, my screen gets messy and the computer freezes. I can then only force it to shut down and start again. Finally, after 20 to 30 minutes, the laptop stays on, although once it switches off after about 45 minutes.
Please, who can give me some advice?

    Hi uygur,
if you checked what Pelox said, and set the First Boot Device to Hdd, have a look that the Notebook boot up correctly.
If the message "Insert system disk in drive.
Press any key when ready." still appears, could it be possible that the Notebook has problems to boot from your Hdd.
Please keep me updated about your problem
    bye

  • Sorry, but another boot problem

I am sorry to ask this question but I have read all of the recent posts on boot problems and followed all instructions but I am still having a problem. It passes the POST then gives the Boot Failure, insert boot disk into drive A message. The only thing I have not done is install a new bios. I have only got one SATA HDD, one CD Writer and floppy.
I have plugged the HD into SATA1 and the CD into IDE1, during the boot sequence it see the CD as Primary Master1 and the HDD as Third IDE Master.
During the POST it passes memory test and can detect both the HDD and CD and floppy.
I have set the HDD settings as follows:
    Native Mode
    ATA Config= S-ATA only
    S-ATA keep enabled = Yes
    P-ATA keep enabled = Yes
    P-ATA Channel Selection = Both
    Combined Mode = S-ATA 1st channel
    S-ATA ports definition = P0-1st/P1-2nd
Also I have set the Boot sequence as follows:
    1st boot = CD
    2nd boot = HDD
    3rd boot = floppy
I have built this PC only in the last few days and there is no operating system yet, it has the following specs:
    BIOS A6728IMS 3.5 020504
    865PE Neo2
    Pentium 4 2.40aGhz
    2 x 256 Kingston 400Mhz PC3200
    128MB Excalibur RADEON 9200 8xAGP
    Seagate 80Gb S-ATA HDD
    LiteOn 52x CD Writer
    PSU: 3.3v 28A, 5v 32A, 12v 16A (350W)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Thanks, its good to know that I seem to have set it up ok but when I try to boot from the cd (Windows Server 2003) it still says there is a boot failure please insert disk into drive A???

  • Boot from Raid-hdd with a controller card installed?

    Hi,
I have a problem. I've just intalled a Windows 2000 my HDD3 (IDE-raid) and everthing went well. I've put the 1st boot option to SCSI and it boots normal. But when I add a hdd to my controller card (Promise Ultra100) it doesn't boot the raid, instead, it tries to boot from the hdd on the controller-card. I've just got this card, and had a KT3-Ultra ARU before. There I could change between "Ultra-0, Ultra-1, Raid-0 and Raid-1 etc. etc." in the bios, where Ultra stands is the Controller card and Raid in the onboard raid. So, why can't I do this on this, newer card? Any1 know how to work around it or how to fix it?
    This is what I have:
    IDE1:
            Master:  Western 180GB
            Slaev:    Maxtor  250GB
    IDE2:
            Master: NEC 1300A
            Slave:  Lite-on-it 40125W
    IDE3 (Raid):
            Master: Maxtor 80GB
            Slave:   Maxtor 80GB
    Controller card IDE4:
            Master: Western 250GB
            Slave:   Western 250GB
    Controller card IDE5:
            Master: Western 200GB
            Slave:   Seagate 30Gb
    Controller card = Promise Ultra100
And yes, I have the modded version of the bios couse I wanted to have a real raid on my IDE-drives. How can it even be raid if it's only one drive? But that doesn't really matter, couse the boot-options are the same as before.

Hi, I did as u said and bought a new controller card (Titan Electronics Inc. Ultra ATA/133 IDE). But it didn't help, it's the same as with the older Promise card.
    This is what happenes:
When I add a hdd to the controller card it finds the hdd and such. Everything works normal untill the os-boot-process begins. Because there is only one alternative called "SCSI" in the bios, where u chose where to boot from it thinks it should boot from the controller card (cause it is a kind of SCSI-card). But I want it to boot from the raided-drivers on the onboard raid (whitch also is a kind of SCSI-card). The thing is that it mixes them up, and only tries to boot from the controller card i've installed, and ignores the raided-drivers. When I had my Kt3 Ultra-aru I could chose between booting from:
    IDE0
    IDE1
    IDE2
    IDE3
    CDRom
    Raid0
    Raid1
(this options only showed up when I had my Promise ULTRA controller installed on it)
    ULTRA0
    ULTRA1
    ULTRA2
    ULTRA3
But with this, newer and more expensive card, I can only chose SCSI in the boot sequnce.
Any idea how to fix that? Maybe to mail to the MSI so they fast can added that choice to the BIOS in an update?
Would be thankfull for any help possible

  • Dual G4 MDD - Boot problem - stopped at blue screen

    Good day,
I am trying to revive a machine that was reported dead due to video card issue.
Replaced AGP graphics card with PCI - display OK.
Now I am experiencing further difficulty with the computer.
Computer boots to Apple logo and spinning wheel, then proceeds to blue background screen but no pointer and no further boot progression.
Here is the troubleshooting I have done thus far:
Verbose boot - option-V on boot, no hang-ups seen, but scrolls by rather quickly. Proceeds to blue background screen after verbose boot - same result.
Choose boot device - hold down option at boot - computer recognizes HDD boot volume and CD-ROM boot volume. Try booting to 10.3, 10.5 install CDs / DVDs, TechTool CD from AppleCare - same result.
2 HDDs installed; both cable-select. Remove secondary drive, set primary drive to master, then cable-select - same result.
2x 512K RAM installed; booted with only one, switched out DIMMs, switched RAM slots, installed known good 256K DIMM - same result.
Reset PMU via logic board switch - unplugged machine, pressed switch for 1 second, let sit for 2 minutes unplugged, plugged back in - same result.
Reset PRAM via keyboard - command-option-P-R on boot, wait for second chime, release - same result.
    Reset PRAM via OpenFirmware - command-option-O-F on bootup, reset-nvram set-defaults reset-all - same result.
Set computer to target disk mode and installed fresh OS X 10.3 on primary HDD - same result
Boot to Apple Hardware Test CD - looped > 48 hours - reports no errors.
As you can tell, I think I have run out of troubleshooting options. My gut tells me it's a bad CPU, but I wanted to post here before running up the eBay / PayPal tree too far.
Let me know what you think. Thanks!

I have had this problem twice, with 2 different fixes. It seems as if yours might be a little bit more serious. First question, how long do you let the computer sit there and try to get past the blue screen? When I got a PC --> Mac flashed Nvidia GeForce 7800 GS the "AppleHWSensor.Kext" was causing a blue screen for about 2 minutes before it would load the login screen. Removing that extension fixed it.
Second time I ran into this problem was when my system profiler was reporting "unable to report Firewire Devies" in red text. I still dont know for sure but i think my firewire port(s) have gone bad on my logic board. One or both of them. I fixed this by removing all of the .Kext files that had anything to do with firewire from my extensions folders.
    These extension include :
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
In conclusion, I would say that there is some kind of hardware failure thats causing the boot to hang. The hard part is figuring out what. Goodluck!

  • Cold boot problems

    Hi out there,
I have a problem with my MSI 6590. When I boot it hangs on th detection of the IDE HDD. It stays there for about 25 seconds and then tries the floppy and cd-rom. As it does not find an OS it stopps. When warmbooting from there the boot works as HDD is recognized and everything works fine from there on.
Anybody out there who has teh same problem or an explanationor better even a fix ?
    I am using a WD1200JB.
    :(

    Hi,
Don't know if our issues have anything in common, but me and a few others have experienced lots of cold boot crashes with Win2K and WinXP. These issues disappear when the PC has "warmed up". Boards KT4 Ultra and KT4V.
In my case for example, W2K might crash on cold boot reporting random errors, but this never happens when the PC has warmed up.
All my components have been checked and bios settings set to default so it has to be an issue with the board or bios code or something. I have also reinstalled the OS many times and tried different IDE cables, power supplies - you name it. Issues remain (and got worse with the new 1.25 beta bios, so I flashed back to v1.10).
But - check your cables and connections. Try to replace the IDE cable and also try the suggested jumper change. Hopefully your issue is just a loose connection or starts working with a different jumper setup.
As a long shot bug check - try to drop your cpu FSB down to 128 MHz or even all the way to 100 MHz (if running at 133 MHz) and check whether this takes the issue away.
    Regards,
    Tom
