Booting Problems!  Have to keep resetting PRAM

Hey everyone,
I just got an iMac education model. It was running sweet for a day, then ran all the updates etc and let it sleep for ages cos I had to go out.
When I tried to wake the computer it didn't work and subsequently I couldn't reboot it. I discovered through these forums that I had to reset the PRAM so did that and problem solved. Worked great, shutdown, went to bed.
Next evening I pushed the on button and same thing! Blank screen even though the computer was on, so I reset the PRAM again and it works fine now. So I ran update again, got one more security update, repaired permissions, did a boot from the OS X cd to repair the drive (didn't need repairing).
Question is - why would this keep happening? I'm hoping it won't happen again, could it just be faulty RAM? Does anyone have an intimate knowledge of PRAM?
Thanks alot!
Gareth
iMac (intel core duo) education   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi Gareth, I am hoping someone will respond soon to your post.
I am experiencing very similar problems with my brand new iMac G5 iSight education model Intel Core Duo 20 ''. During digital audio sessions and i.e. running iTunes visualizer for 10 minutes, computer shuts down, will not restart until I unplug it for 10-15 seconds. I have reset PRAM, run permissions repair, hardware diagnostics (no problems), but hesitate to open the back cover and reset SMU (apparently our model has switch, can't be reset by rebooting if I understand correctly (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908). I am concerned it is a power supply issue, but using the terminal app, it doesn't let me see the "kernel buffer", so I can't see if it is returning a "-110 error". There is an interesting discussion about consistent power supply 9http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2771605&#2771605) where an iMac owner couldn't repeat the problem at the Apple service center because they apparently had better power. So I am going to try putting a power conditioner (rather than just a surge protector) in place. If it is a software problem, this seems unlikely, since I have only been running the computer for a week and have a limited number of applications installed, but I will do an "archive and install" from the installer disk if this doesn't work. I hope I don't have to take it in for service. Any other ideas out there, anyone?
Thanks, Cody

  • Macbook have to keep resetting PRAM

So I have this Macbook that I put 2GB into, one of the DIMMS went bad after 3 weeks. I verified it with using Memtest. Kept getting kernel panics. I only have one DIMM slot filled with a 1 GB stick.
Now the machine won't start up sometimes, no chimes, no screen, and vertical lines. The PRAM has to be reset in order to get it to start up. Is this because I'm only running one DIMM?
And, yes, running just one DIMM slot filled makes the machine feel much slower to open programs, etc.

this exact same issue happened to me on my macbook.
all of the sudden apps would give me a "cannot start application -10810"
my email spell check dictionary was "unreachable"
some apps would start but not present a window on the screen (disk utility did this alot)
I would restart which would fix things temporarily.
Then I reset PRAM which seems to have fixed it (fingers crosses) but now sometimes when I strart up I get a light grey screen with vertical colored lines from top and bottom of screen. They don;t go all the way though. they look more like spikes coming from top and bottom of screen.
i just adjusted my resolution to force it to write ti back to NVRAM. I'll see if that works,

  • My computer beeps when I turn it on . I have tried to reset pram but can't get past the beeps.

My computer beeps when I turn it on . I have tried to reset pram but can't get past the beeps.

The beeps (or flashes) are usually an indication that there is no working RAM. This article gives some examples, but the concept applies widely across many Mac models.

  • Help with BBOD!  Can't seem to get to the bottom of it.  Have tried SMC reset, PRAM reset, reinstall of Mavericks, Carbon copy clone, checked my CPU, Memory is 500GB and I'm only using 250GB thereabouts.

    Here's what I've tried;
    SMC reset
    Pram reset
Looked at activity monitor - mostly seems OK aside from a kernel task taking up memory (approx 460MB) but CPU is around 96% idle.
Fan seems to be running constantly - heats up noticeably when I close the MBP
Despite a re-install of Mavericks, MBP is running frustratingly slow.  Just typing is enough to bring on the beach ball.
Have backed up everything, reinstalled from a clone, checked through Apple Hardware test and carried out a Verify Disk Permission - nothing was reported, erased the drive and set up again - problem still stands.
Memory is running at 3.43 GB without anything really running bar Safari.
A little loath to install SMC fan control without knowing what's wrong.
    Checked software updates.
Can anyone tell me what the matter is?  Does this have a fix?
Have been reading up various posts but to no avail so have resorted to posting myself.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
    Many, many thanks

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. • Have to keep resetting hub 3.0

I have had infinity since the 8th of march the problem is I have to keep unplugging and resetting my home hub 3.0 I get speeds of about 30mb through ethernet connection and about 20mb wireless about 24 hours after I reset the hub my wireless keeps dropping to about 1mb but when I plug it in with the ethernet it is about 30mb so I turn it off and then my wireless gets back up to max speed, I phoned support last night and he did some changes from his end and said he would keep and eye on it it stayed alright up until about an hour ago and has dropped to 5mb surely it should not keep doing this is 5mb about normal for this time of day or is there a problem with the home hub 3.0

Could be local wireless interference? I take it you've tried the usual "change wireless channel" trick. The HH3 "auto" setting should be loads better than previous routers though. May be worth looking at "inSSIDer" (google/download) to see how busy spectrum is.
Also worth checking your wireless drivers PC-side & ensure you have the latest?
    Can you try another device/laptop?
I've found HH3 to be excellent from a wireless perspective

  • I have to keep resetting my ipod

in the past few weeks i've had to reset my ipod to factory settings twice.i plug in the pod and itunes gives me a pop up that said that itunes could not retrieve information from the ipod and to reset to factory settings.does anyone know what might be going on that i have to keep doing this?

    Hi Patrick,
I tried that last night, and unfortunately still had the same problem. I have now arranged to return the iPod in exchange for a replacement. Hopefully this was a one off! Thanks anyway.
I'd be interested to hear of any other advice in case it happens again when I receive my replacement!

  • I have to keep resetting my Time Capsule

I got a new MacBook Pro and I have to keep setting up the Time Capsule.  It will work for awhile, like part of a day,  and then I get the message that the backup was delayed and I reset the TC and set it up again.  The TC is not new.  I used it with my other computer which is a MacBook.  I used the TC to set up everything from that onto my new MacBook Pro.  Also, the TC feels very hot to the touch.
    Thanks!

Hot to the touch is a bit hard to quantify, but if you cannot hold your hand on top of the device reasonably comfortably, the device is running too hot.
Make sure that there is plenty of airspace on all sides of the Time Capsule
Invest in a USB laptop cooler to rest the Time Capsule on
If it still runs too hot, you are risking further damage to the device. You'll need to take it to an Apple store to let them have a look.

  • Why do I have to keep resetting home sharing to work

Why do I have to keep turning off home sharing and then turning it back on to watch movies from my mac mini to my tv via apple tv? I just bought apple tv brand new from the apple store yesterday. My mac mini also has the latest update.

    Hello jdebie,
Congratulations on your new Apple TV!  I would be concerned too if I had to turn Home Sharing off and then back every time I wanted to use it.  I found an article with steps that I think would help with this issue.
I recommend reviewing the full article below, but I think steps 4-7 are specifically useful for what you described:

  • Ever since I loaded Firefox4.0 I have to keep resetting my password for gmail everytime. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

what else do you need to know other than above quesion?

I have this problem too but I was under the impression that if I delete an account from yahoo it is gone forever and my students all use the account to correspond with me- if I delete the account will I then be able to set up a new account using the same name as before?
The instructions provided do not delete the Yahoo account itself, just remove it from the iPad mail app (and then of course add it back in). This will not damge your yahoo account at all.

  • My macbook pro (13 in, mid-2010) failed to boot with single beep. Reset PRAM, now it's working normally. Should I still be worried/take it in?

Okay so my mbp has had a couple minor freakouts lately, particularly while streaming video (the screen would turn one solid color and the only solution was to reboot) then today I opened my laptop and was in the process of entering my password when the screen shut off. The computer attempted to reboot, failed, told me there was a problem and it was trying again, and a bunch of weird text appeared over the gray boot screen. I turned it off, and when I tried to turn it back on again, it wouldn't boot and instead emitted a low beep once every 5 seconds accompanied by a flashing light on the front. I read that it was a RAM problem so I did the hold down P R command control (or something) and restarted it and now it's working normally.
But should I be worried? Should I still take it in? Is there some sort of memory diagnostic I should run?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Which model MacBook Pro do you have (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011")?
Oops! Should have read the header! There are no known issues affecting that particular model and I would only take it in for testing if it begins to exhibit similar problems again. You may have 'fixed' it with a NVRAM reset. But just be on the look-out for further glitches and, if they occur, then take the machine into your local Apple Store or AASP.

  • Have to keep resetting iphone to get coverage back? Help

In the last week my phone coverage blanks out. It's all good if I reset the phone but only temporarily. Just recently (2 days ago) I installed the new firmware 2.2.1. plus the carrier settings update. Any ideas?

I am having the same issue. I as well updated to 2.2.1 a few days ago and I'm having the same issue. I also updated the carrier settings. My phone calls keeps dropping even tho I have full service and the other night I completly lost service and I was at home were I always have full service. It kept saying searching and I kept restetting my phone (until the Apple logo came on) and still no luck. I eventually went to bed and in the am the service was back.
I called AT&T first and she said the area of PR I live in has full service so she dosnt understand why I would lose service or have dropped calls. She also said she doubts it's the sim card as I just got it in December. They said a tech engineer would contact me before Tuesday to do some more troubleshooting over the phone but she thinks it's the a problem with the iPhone and she said it will most likely have to be replaced.
    So wish me luck!

  • Have to keep resetting the service number

If there is, I haven't found it. Every couple of days I toggle the setting off and on to get it to work again and it lasts for two or three more days, then I repeat the process. I have reset all settings and restored my iPad and I still can't get to work reliably.

  • Hp pavilion dv6, I have to keep resetting my playback tone contols after sart up

When I start my hp pavilion dv6, i have to reset my playback tone contols and the "apply" option is greyed out. How can I keep my tone setting as the default setting for my speakers?

You guys probably resolved this by now but just in case you haven't I have been having the problem for about a week now. I bought a customized dv6t Entertainment notebook in July but recently didn't want the Beats audio manager on at startup so i went to msconfig and disable IDT audio from the startup menu. That's when everytime I turned on my computer the tone controls went crazy, with the bass all the way down and the treble all the way up. So after some testing I found out how to fix me. Even though it has been 8 months since you asked about this, here is my SOLUTION.
    1. Using the Sound Manager set your tone controls to the desired levels or just click reset to zero.
    2. Click the start button and type msconfig in the search bar. Hit enter.
    3. The System Configuration box will appear. Click on the third tab that says Services.
    4. Click the bar that says Service to arrange the programs alphabetically.
    5. You should see Audio Service with the manufacturer being IDT, Inc.  if not then scroll down til you see it.
    6. Uncheck Audio Service. Click the Apply button at the bottom of the page then the OK button.
    7. You will be prompted to restart your computer and then do so.
    8. That's it! Once your computer restarts the tone control levels should be where you left them.
If you are having problems with this, it may be because you don't have IDT PC Audio disabled at startup which can also be done in msconfig one tab over from Services. This launches the Beats Audio Manager at startup but just disabling the Audio Service may do this in one fell swoop. Hope this helps, even after all these months!

  • Poor Internet Connection/Have to keep resetting the modem

For the past two months our internet service has been terrible.  I've had numerous phone calls with Verizon tech support and had two technicians visit our house.  Needless to say, after all new wiring in our house, updating the lines outside our house, and a new modem I still have to reset the modem several times a day and then when the internet does work it is extremely slow.  The technician said my house and my neighbor's house don't even show on the grid for our local Verizon office and that the problem is somewhere between our road and their office........so how does that get fixed?  Apparently the lines are too busy and it just keeps kicking us off.  Has anyone else experienced a problem like this?  I work part time from home and rely on my internet service.  I also don't have the time to contact Verizon every single day!  Help!
