Booting Solaris 10 without starting X

I have changed the graphics adapter in my PC and the new adapter is not recognized by Sol10-i86.
The PC is freezing after booting and starting X.
I have a Solaris driver package available for the card but this needs to be installed in the shell. How do I start only the shell after booting without starting X/cdm?
Thanks for feedback

Hi
In x86 while booting it will give a option to press Esc to abort auto boot .Do that and select a default /Basic driver for the video and monitor.Save changes and continue ,you will get the commandline login prompt .Use the pkgadd to install .Once installed reboot and follow the same process and select the device driver you have installed.

  • Aluminium PowerBook G4 15" Booting issues - Doesn't start without AC power

    Hi all,
This is my first post. I have recently had the laptop having start-up issues. It is running Leopard 10.5.something and whenever I try to boot it up it starts brefily, very breifly, making half of the startup chime, and the disk begins to spin, then it stops, and will not be booted up unless plugged into the wall. It is disastrous!
It only starts when plugged into the wall, and shuts off completely (until I shut down from the wall) and then it wont work. I attempted resetting the PRAM and it made a heap of noise for a couple of minutes, then I decided it was taking too long and pulled it out!
    Any Help is great,
    Thanks

Hi, Sorry for TMI...No, I am not saying the best thing to do would to send it out for repair. That would be expensive.
The first thing is to find out if you have a good battery. Easiest thing would be find someone/someplace with a battery you can try. If it works with a known good battery, then you know you just have a dead battery. Try an Apple store in Melbourne. They can check it for you free.
So the stuff about checking your system profiler for battery info is a way to check the status of the battery. In addition, you can download free an application called coconut battery (freeware) that will tell you ALOT of info about the state of your battery and whether it's charging. http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/
If a GOOD battery works with your computer, then the problem is you have a dead battery. If a good battery STILL doesn't work to boot your system, then odds are an item called the DC In & Sound card is bad. You can get the part for about $50 USand can install it yourself if you're handy. Try this site: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Browse/Mac They will sell you the tools. If you have someone else repair it, you're probably looking at about $150 to $200 US.
The noise issue on your hard drive. Sounds like a hard drive issue. First thing, back up all the data before it dies. The try to boot up with a MAC OS X system disk. If you can do that and no noise, then:
    1) Your hardware ( Ie the drive may be failing)
    2) The startup system might be bad and require repair with the programs I mentioned or a NEW system install with your MAC OS X System disk ( You could do a clean install, ie erase everything, or an "archive install" which you can read about if you like.
    3) Disk Warrior is very good at repairing the startup systems if there is a software problem, ie a system issue.
    4) If there is a hardware problem (bad drive) you MIGHT and I say MIGHT be able to repair it with the other program I mentioned. That program could write out bad sectors, but I'd be careful about relyingtoo much on the drive since "NOISE" coming from a drive is never a good thing. The good thing is that they are NOT that hard to replace on your own.
To summarize, first address the battery issue. Then figure out if the noise stops when you boot from a CD/DVD. Then try a disk repair utility program and/or a new system install to see if it is just a system software problem. If it persists after these efforts, you could try mapping out sectors to see if that helps, but may end up needing a new hard drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem booting Solaris 10 on ProLiant server after installation.

    Hi all!
I have a brand new HP ProLiant DL360 G5 server. It contains 6 internal
hard drives. RAID 5 is configured on these drives using built-in HP
Smart Array P400i controller. I've just installed Solaris 10 8/07 on this
server. Solaris requires a driver for P400i controller. I'm using Driver
Update CD created from HP provided ISO image. Solaris 10 is
officially supported OS for DL360 G5 server.
    Installation proceeds as expected:
    1) At the begining of Solaris installation, Driver Update is used to
load HP driver for raid controller. During installation, disk is
recognized as c1d0t0 (the only disk in system); one partition is
    created on this disk.
    2) Disk is devided to 6 slices:
    c1d0t0s0 - swap, 4GB
    c1d0t0s1 - /, cca 32GB
    c1d0t0s[3,4,5,6] - /zones/[a,b,c,d] - each cca 160GB
    3) At the end of installation, CPQary3 driver is installed to target
system without any errors reported. No errors are reported during
    installation at all.
After reboot, GRUB is started. It shows boot menu containing two
    options:
    - Solaris 'normal' boot
    - failsafe boot
PROBLEM: Selecting 'normal' boot leads to immediate system restart.
According to documentation, this case occurs when PCQary3
    driver is not installed.
I'm able to boot using 'failsafe' option in grub. After entering single
user, I load PCQary3 driver to runtime using 'install-du' command.
I'm also able to find instaled Solaris using 'install-recovery' and mount
its root volume to /a directory. Necessary driver IS installed inside
/a/kernel/drv/ directory. Options 'bootpath' in /a/boot/solaris/bootenv.rc
file is set up correctly pointing to device associated with /dev/dsk/c1d0t0s1
device. Also GRUB is able to recognize UFS filesystem for boot partition.
    I've already tried (without success):
    1) Use RAID 1+0 instead of RAID5
    2) Create only 3,5GB partition instead of 700GB large one.
    3) Place / on c1d0t0s0 instead of c1d0t0s1.
    4) Re-create boot archive using 'bootadm update-archive -R /a'
So, everything seems to be installed correctly, but system cannot boot.
Do you have any ideas how to fix this problem?
    Jozef

Sounds like an issue I just had with a brand new X4150, installation and failsafe worked fine, but normal booting led to immediate reboot of the server. This was due to an incompatibility of solaris and intel's newest generation xeon chips.
You can still boot 'normal' solaris in 32-bit mode:
hit 'e' at the grub menu, 'e' again to edit the 'normal' boot entry and add 'kernel/unix' after multiboot. This should boot up solaris in 32-bit mode. From there, download and install the latest patch set (125370-06 and 127112-05 are fixing this issue). After that you should be fine.

  • Booting thinkpad t61 without a keyboard

I'm having the following problem with my Thinkpad T61.
Every few minutes the computer starts behaving as if a few keys on the keyboard are pressed. The keys are no physically stuck, the system just behaves as if they are. This happens sometimes for no apparent reason, but I can always make it happen by pressing any kye on the bottom right side of the keyboard.
I've concluded that the keyboard is faulty and ordered a new one.
In the meanwhile, I'm trying to use my laptop with an external (USB) keyboard. This doesn't quite solve the problem, b/c the laptop still allows input from the internal keyboard, so it still messes up too frequently. I've tried disabling the keyboard, but the Device Manager doesn't seem to allow me to do that. I thought of physically removing the keyboard, but then I don't have a Power button!
Does anyone have an idea for me for how to use my laptop until the replacement keyboard arrives?
Is there a way to boot the computer without a keyboard connected?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

How about unhooking the keyboard cable and taping the end so it doesn't make contact with anything on the board and leave the keyboard on so you still have the power button.

  • Dual-booting Windows XP without Bootcamp

Is it possible to dual-boot Windows XP without Bootcamp, using another boot loader like LILO or Grub, or some other? Is it possible to do this assuming I do NOT want to install linux anywhere? Can anyone point me in the right direction with a HOWTO or something? Again, I do NOT want to install Linux, only OSX and Windows XP (no "triple boot"). Thanks.

Yes, just find a distro that supports macintel or intel mac. I think ubuntu has one, also keep in mind bootcamp has nothing to do with your macs firmware nore is it any type of bootloader. It partitions the HD, and allows you to create a CD with drivers on it. Might also consider parallels given the limited amount of space available on the macbooks. Having your linux install as a single document on the hd can be handy if you start to run out of room on the macbook.

  • HT4539 how to i transfer my games from one ipod to another without starting all over?

can anyone help? i just got the new iPod touch 5th generation, i need to know how to transfer all of my games from my old ipod touch to my new one without starting all over. i want to transfer my games as they are.

Connect the old one to your computer's iTunes and do File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11) to make sure that all of the apps are on your computer, then force a backup of the iPod by right-clicking the iPod 'device' and selecting 'backup' and then restore that backup onto your new iPod (that will overwrite anything that you've added to that iPod) - hopefully your games and their progress will be copied over.

  • How to get someone off my phone bill and onto their own without starting a new contract?

I added my boyfriend to my plan in September when the iPhone 6 came out. Well I'm wanting to split bills again and have him on his own separate bill. Is there a way that he can be taken off my plan and moved to his own plan and bill without starting a new two year contract? Like would he be able to be on his own plan and be eligible for an ungrade in Sept 2016? Even if the two years does start over, is there still a way he can be moved off of my plan and onto his own without any fees for me? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Dual boot Solaris 8 and Windows XP

Hello. I currently have windows xp as my OS. I would like to install Solaris 8 as a secondary OS. I have a separate hard drive I would like to put Solaris on. My question is, will the solaris installation allow me to choose which drive to install solaris to? Also, how can I set up my system to boot windows if I do nothing, but boot solaris if I choose to? Thanks for any help, I'm new to solaris and to dual-booting.

  • How do can I use Jumpstart to boot Solaris from Slave Drive

    Hi all,
I have XP on Master Drive and I used Jumpstart to install Solaris on Slave Drive.
    This is the profile:
    install_type     initial_install
    system_type     standalone
    usedisk          c0d1
    boot_device      c0d1 update
    root_device     c0d1s0
    fdisk           c0d1 solaris all
    partitioning     explicit
    filesys          c0d1s0 10000 /
    filesys          c0d1s1 1111 swap
    filesys          c0d1s7 free /export/home
    cluster          SUNWCreq
Now, I specified that the boot_device is c0d1 but after the installation the boot device is c0d0 which is my Master Drive...
...when I use Windows Boot Manager to boot Solaris... it cannot find the boot files on the master drive so it runs the DCA...
... so under the DCA I have to tell Solaris that the boot files are in my Slave Drive then I save it.
...I don't want to make this change everytime
any ideas that would make this install hands free?

...don't know the answer to that but here is an alternative:
... use this as your finish script
... it changes the bootpath in bootenv.rc to point to the slave drive
    #!/usr/bin/perl
    open(INFILE,"/a/boot/solaris/bootenv.rc");
    open(OUTFILE,">/a/boot/solaris/bootenv.rc_out");
    while(<INFILE>) {
    chomp;
    #--cmdk@0,0 is the master drive
    #--cmdk@1,0 is the slave drive
    s/cmdk\@0\,0/cmdk\@1\,0/g;
    print OUTFILE "$_\n";
    #...replace bootenv.rc_out with bootenv.rc
    ...happy programming

  • System always starts fsck's at boot and can't start normally.

First of all, let me say that this forum is awesome. I've just started my first real ArchLinux experiment and you guys have helped me out so much already!
Anyway, my system keeps starting fsck's at boot. It then starts counting to 1 minute and 30 seconds, after which it stops the fsck and drops into into emergency mode. I can only boot by passing the "fsck.mode=force" parameter to the kernel from the boot manager.
I copied what I think are the relevant lines from journalctl:

  • Can't boot Solaris 10 during installation

I am stuck up with a petty problem while booting Solaris 10 1/06 from the installation CD no.1. The GRUB boot loader appears fine, but when I try to boot the Solaris kernel and module, a message appears
Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory
My x86 computer's configuration is as follows:
Intel Pentium 4 processor 2.83 GHz
    RAM 128 MB
    HD 80GB
I can't figure out whether the problem is really due to insufficient memory or do I need to install more RAM on my platform. Can someone help me out with this?

128mb is plenty of memory. No it isn't plenty of memory. Solaris 10 Update 1 or Solaris Express needs at least
256mb of memory. The initial root ramdisk that is loaded from the CD/DVD
uncompresses to ~ 128mb already, leaving no space for the SunOS kernel on a
system with only 128mb of memory!

My colleague deployed his web application to my weblogic domain. However, the domain cannot be started after deployment. How to undeploy that application without starting the weblogic?
I use weblogic 10.3.3. His application uses servlet and jsp and tests that application in weblogic 10.3.2

Delete the application from the deploy directory. The domains/base_domain/autodeploy is the directory for auto deployed applications, which get deployed when server is started. Or, the domain's InstallDir directory.
