Booting the Air from DVD

so, I have an Air, 13", about a year and a half old.  what I "think" happened was that the SSD drive failed.  I ordered a new drive and installed it.
Then I connected an external DVD and popped in a Snow Leopard disk and triedf to boot off of the DVD and it won't boot.  So, questions:
Must the expernal DVD by the one that came with the Air or will any external DVD work?  I'm using on that came with my Sony.  It's external, USB, enclosed.
Can I boot off of the Snow Leopard DVD?  This is the SL that came with my MacBook Pro.  I intended to install that OS, go to the App Store and get Lion from there.
Any ideas why this thing won't boot?
Also, is there a way to "see" if the HD is there?  I was hoping for a boot sequence where I could test the hardware and make sure the SSD drive was there.
Thanks
Cliff

You may want to try and boot the MBA from a disk that is certain to contain the right display and peripheral drivers (correct build). If that SL disk is a build predating the MBA, it won't work. As well, the MBP custom boot disk is unlikely to work in any case.

  • Bookmarks syncing issue - 'over-the-air from MobileMe'

    Hi,
Just bought a new iMac running Mountain Lion so I've now got iCloud capability back. My Safari bookmarks on my iPhone 4 are a mess and I can't delete them or get them to sync properly with the iMac Safari bookmarks.
When I connect my iPhone and look in iTunes>Devices>Info>Other, it says that 'bookmarks are being synced with your iPhone over the air  from MobileMe. Over-the-air sync settings can be changed from your iPhone'. There's no option to change this default and I can't find anything on the iPhone that lets me change over-the-air sync settings. I used to have a MobileMe account but thought that was all dead and buried now.
What do I need to do to make sure the bookmarks are synced from the iMac and the current ones on the iPhone are deleted?
    Thanks,
    Pete

Before doing a whole restore, try adding the account again without the on air syncing turned on, then sync. It may not authenticate if you have cancelled the account but if you continue to tap "Save" it will accept it with a message stating that it may not be able to connect to the server.
After, then sync so that iTunes gets the updated settings.
Nice, thanks, that did the trick.
I had to tap "save" twice (first time, then the alert pops up, dismiss the alert and hit "save" again) and accept to add the account although it could not authenticate. Then I synced and afterwards deleted the account again *on the iPhone*. Syncing again and iTunes now lets me sync contacts and calendars again.
    Thank you!

  • Your contacts are being synced with your iPad over the air from iCloud

tl;dr: iPhone works properly with iTunes 11.1 and iPad does not. Can't sync with both iTunes and iCloud to separate, distinct Calendar/Contact/Notes groups.
    Explanation:
Ever since iTunes 11 was released (I'm on 11.1 now) I'm unable to sync Contacts, Calendars, and Notes via iTunes because I'm using over the air syncing from iCloud. As late as iTunes 10.7, this was okay, because "On My PC" groups would sync perfectly with iTunes, and iCloud groups would sync perfectly with iCloud.
In fact, this still works, today, but only on my iPhones.
However on the iPad I get the message "Your contacts are being synced with your iPad over the air from iCloud." (Well, yeah, I know that. My iCloud contacts should continue to sync via iCloud. I don't want to turn off this behavior.)
The "workaround" used to be sticking to iTunes 10.7, which had correct behavior for both iPad and iPhone. Of course iOS7 nuked that option.
Is anyone aware of another workaround? (Merging my professional Outlook stuff into my iCloud stuff is not a workaround.)

I can place a bounty. $20 USD to your Paypal account for a fix.

  • Where does the air from the fans come out?

I was wondering where the air from the fans in a 15" MacBook Pro come out. I know that the fans run all the time so I wanted to know where the air comes out so I know not to cover that part of the computer when it's running.

In the link I posted (actually from an Apple manual page): "Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents."

  • 10.6.6 update - can't boot, installation OS from DVD fails

    hi all,
I have updated to 10.6.6 yesterday and since then I can't boot my MBPro. It freezes at the initial grey screen with Apple logo and "loading" wheel spinning (initially an installation progress bar appears, but vanishes after a while).
I tried reinstalling Snow Leopard from DVD, but it fails "The content of this disk can't be changed. Mac OS X couldn't be installed on this disk." I tried verifying / repairing the hard drive using the Disk Utility, but here I also get an error: "Disk utility can't repair this disk..disk, and restore you backed-up files".
I ran the Disk Utility verification of my HD about a week ago, all worked OK then.
Any ideas how I can get to my hard drive?

  • How can I import the photos from dvd or hard disk?

    Hi!
How can I import/export my photos from dvd or hard disk??!

To what?    Are you having trouble with a DVD made by a particular device, or a hard disk that was on a particular computer, or is still in that computer, and communicating to your computer?  We don't have enough details to answer the question.    Are you trying to get photos into an iPhoto certain version, Photoshop certain version, just the Finder of a  certain version, or specific operating system on your Mac?    We need more details.  Is the DVD a standard DVD, such as is indicated on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2446 or something non-standard?

  • Booting the Mac from an external USB drive

I was under the impression that you could only boot a Mac from an external firewire drive. However, I have just successfully booted my new MacBook from an external SuperDuper backup connected via USB.

I was under the impression that you could only boot a Mac from an external firewire drive.
That basically only applies to Mac OS X on PowerPC Macs, not on an Intel Mac such as a MacBook.

  • Boot MacBook Air from remote CD?

I just bought a MacBook Air second hand and Verified Disk Permissions to see if anything was wrong, there is. Now, it works fine, I only need it for light work, but it recommends that I boot from the install CDs, which I have... but I need one of those external Optical Drives.
Now, I do have an iMac and I seem to recall that there was some software that came out that would allow a wireless connection but am not sure if that will work when booting from the CD, my suspicions are that it will not. It's my day off and I only get one so I do not want to spend the whole day trying to figure this out, of course I could have tried it but I thought that reaching out to the community might be best.
    Any ideas please?

It is my understanding that the pre-Lion-OSX was on a USB drive rather than CDs:

  • How to install Leopard to external hard drive & boot the eMac from it.

I am attempting to update my mom's eMac so she can use her new iPad and have discovered it would be best to install Leopard onto an external firewire hard drive and boot from that. I want to be sure I'm doing it right. So, I attach the drive to the eMac, partition and format it (I did find some instructions in the forum) and then how do I load Leopard on the external drive. Would it be best to do all the formatting and installation from my own MacBook Pro? After Leopard is on the external drive, how do I cause the eMac to boot from it?
Or would it be easier to return the iPad, buy the basic Macbook and shine the eMac? Can you tell I'm frustrated?

Install it normally. The drive must be connected with FireWire.

No. It won't work if you do.
how do I cause the eMac to boot from it?
Start up with the Option key held down, click on it, and push the button with the straight arrow.

  • Hi, I just bought a new MB Air.  Coming from a MB Pro.  Should I clone it with T.Machine or store the important files on an external?  Still need info from my pro but don't want to clutter up the Air from the start.  Suggestions?

I don't know if I want all the crap I have collected but the ease of just cloning it is attractive?  Can I just bring over email and pics and some docs?  What should I do?  Thanks!  OS 10.68 on my pro.

Having a 1TB drive (about 2/3 full) I couldn't just use TimeMachine to move into the MBA; there wasn't enough space. If I had fewer applications and especially less music I probably would have migrated from TimeMachine. What I wound up doing was cloning my MBP to an external drive and then pruning it down to about 180GB. When the MBA arrived I used that external as my source for migrating and once I was certain all was well the external became my MBA TM drive.

  • Can't boot from DVD or external drive

Because of recent slow performance on my iMac G5 I ran disk utility and repaired permissions, then clicked Verify Disk. It reported minor errors in directory files and said I should repair them. I tried starting up from the MacOS X installation DVD, but I get a spinning beach ball and a symbol with a circle with a diagonal line through it (like a Do Not Enter sign). I had to unplug the computer to reboot.
Using another computer, I made a startup disk on an external hard drive and tried booting the iMac from that, but I get the same beach ball and symbol. Tried another OS X DVD with the same result.
I am able to boot from the internal hard drive only, but then I can't do a disk repair. I have already reset the PRAM, but that didn't help.
    Any suggestions ??? Thanks.

Because of recent slow performance on my iMac G5 I ran disk utility and repaired permissions, then clicked Verify Disk. It reported minor errors in directory files and said I should repair them. I tried starting up from the MacOS X installation DVD, but my G5 still starts from the hard disk and I am therefore unable to repair rthe hard disk.
Can I create a new startup disk by copying my installation disk, leaving off the installation software, and then start my Mac using Option "C".
On my previous Macs I always used Norton Utilities to repair my disk and recover files - are ther any similar packages available for OS X (10.4.7)?
