Booting time with Leopard

May appear simplistic.
But it seems, eversince I had OS 10.5.6 or maybe just lately, booting seems to take a little longer.
I timed it at 75 to 80 sec. from the push of the START button until the full appearance of the DeskTop.
Ran a Dik Utility Verification, ALL is fine.
Now this could be anxiety on my part, but is this OK?
MBP 2.16 duo, 4 RAM, 30GB on internal drive.
Thank you
R

Try booting it to safe mode once, then normally again. If you want to, try timing it before safe mode and after. Safe mode itself will take longer because of what is going on, but maybe it will do a bit of spring cleaning. I don't have your system configuration so I can't say if that seems a long time or not.

[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.

  • How do I start slapd at boot time in leopard?

    Greeting,
Forgive me if this is the wrong forum/community.
I want to start slapd at boot time on my new leopard upgrade.  On tiger, it was as simple as having an LDAPSERVER=-YES- line in /etc/hostconfig.  That does not seem to work for leopard.  I can run slapd from the command line.  I needed to make changes to the slapd.conf tiger version and reload my database, but all is working fine.  I just have not been able to get the deamon to start at boot up.  It must be simple.  Any ideas?
      Thanks,
    --Linn

    Texas Mac Man,
Thanks.  Slapd is the OpenLDAP daemon (server) delivered with MacOS, even Client.  No, starting at the user level is not what I need.  I can already do that in a terminal window with /usr/libexec/slapd, after I get su'ed to root.
Think Unix, not iApps.  When the system boots up, there should be scripts available to start specific daemons.  I am looking for hints there.
    BDAqua,
Thanks.  I had seen that first discussion before.  It deals with slapd failing when it tries to start on MacOS Server... where all these daemons indeed start at boot time.  I am just trying to figure out how to do in leopard what I successfully did in tiger, namely start /usr/libexec/slapd at boot time.
And note, this is not an issue with slapd failing due to slapd.conf or database problems.  All works fine from the user lever start.
      Thanks,

  • Boot Times on Leopard

Ever since I upgraded to Leopard a few months back, I noticed my boot times increased from about 10-20 seconds to up to what is now ranging between 45 seconds to a full 2 minutes
Just wanted to know if anyone else was facing boot time issues on their macbook pros
Post your boot times here if you can please

Okay, I just ran the entire tests and fixes through both OnyX and Main Menu
Boot times were about 45-60 seconds
Then I tried resetting the PRAM and after I heard it reset for 3 times, the boot time got reduced to 30-35 seconds
Although the first time, my applications seemed longer to open but at least the boot times were down
So looks like holding down the Apple/option/p/r reset for 3 times worked for me
Will 4 or even 5 times do any better?
I'd like to know how resetting it over and over again helps with the boot time

  • Really slow boot time with spinning gear

My 13-inch Macbook Pro has been acting really funny lately. When I start up my computer I get the Apple logo and then a spinning gear. This continues to spin for a good minute then proceeds to just the Apple logo and then starts up. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why it is doing this? Thank You.

These are some of the ways which can help you reduce the time it takes between GRUB and the DM.
    1. Append 'fastboot' in the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst
-->This enables asynchronous startup, which can slash one second(or a tad more) off your boot time, However this is known to break the arch boot process on some machines.
    2. Ascertain irrelevant HOOKS from mkinitcpio.conf which you can subsequently remove. Also, set the compression method of your kernel image to lzma, which has the greatest compression ratio of the three available formats. This should reduce the time it takes for your HDD to read the image, as it is compressed to a smaller size, at the price of more CPU. The trade-off is worth it, as a 5400RPM HDD is the performance bottleneck for most laptops.
    3. You could try quick-init from the AUR.
    4. Use a lightweight DM like Slim.
    5. Use a kernel, optimised with patchsets.
My laptop is nearly 5 years old(from the date of purchase of course). GRUB to GDM takes 20s without options 3, 4, and 5.
I had an obsession with reducing boot-time for Arch on my desktop many months ago... and I do think I've lost count on how many times I've had to chroot from the LiveCD to fix my system haha :S
I've managed 10s between GRUB to Slim(from18s), with the help of quick-init, having no identifiable consequences to my system.

  • Upgraded Boot Camp with Leopard - now constant restart

** Apologies for cross-posting. Just realized I was in the wrong topic thread.**
    Hi,
Have been running XP SP2 on Boot Camp Beta since March - all good.
Upgraded this morning to Leopard using DVD, installation went smoothly.
Now everytime I startup in XP, I get to the desktop, and then XP restarts back in Leopard.
Have tried it both with my Bluetooth keyboard & mouse, as well as the USB keyboard & mouse.
Any help would be most appreciated!

I have the same problem and spent hours on the phone with apple. Still no resolution.
It's not their OS, but it is their software, and the DO have to support it.
Don't take no for an answer. They support bootcamp and the windows drivers. (says so on the apple support page) It is their drivers that are causing the crash.
They absolutely have to support you, me and everyone else that has this problem.
If you call Microsoft they will identify it as a driver problem, and then tell you to call your hardware manufacturer for a new driver. The same thing they do to every one who owns a DELL, or and HP.
I have been searching the forums on this for a while. Previously some smart guys on the boards tracked it to apples screen brightness.exe control. The work around was to disable it. You loose the control but windows boots every time. After 1.4 came out this didn't work for me any more. I found that I had to uninstall apple's bootcamp control panel. Once I did that windows started every time since, but again I lost the controls.
I haven't tried this since upgrading, because I haven't been able to get in to windows to do it.

  • How to cancel filesystem check at boot time with systemd

    Hello,
while booting, when the filesystem is checked and it takes too long, it was possible with initscripts to press ctrl^c to cancel the check and postpone it to the next boot. How this can be done with systemd?

http://kernelnewbies.org/Ext4#head-9a25 … 1279bd2b00 would lead me to think that fsck on converted ext4 should be as fast as on a regular ext4, unless http://kernelnewbies.org/Ext4#head-e7f9 … 68c012655c you're using a compatibility mode by mounting the converted fs as ext3.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ex … to_extents should take care of old, pre-migration data.
Admittedly, I may be reading into this too much, this is mostly guesswork on my part and you seem to know much more about the filesystems than I do :-)

  • Longer boot time with 10.4.11?`

I updated my macbook pro from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. No major problems so far, but it does seem to take longer for the computer to boot up. Anybody else noticed this? Any explanation?

    a brody wrote:
Have you verified all your installed software and hardware is known to be 10.4.11 compatible?
No. Nor would I expect to have to do so.
The only hardware different from stock is increased memory - which worked fine on all previous 10.4.X releases.
No non-apple applications load at start-up, so I don't see the relevance of software compatibility. And again, everything worked fine through 10.4.10.

  • Optical disk slowing down boot time with z77 gd55

I recently hooked up an optical drive to a gd55 motherboard, after the windows 7 logo is formed now there is a 15 or so second long pause that wasn't there before. If i insert a disk into the drive the pause is gone as well. If anyone knows of a setting to stop this please help,

I found another similar to what Wonkanoby found. Perhaps your problem is you may need the firmware update.

If that doesn't do any good then try a different ODD. If new ODD needed newegg.ca has:

  • TCCService diagnostic crash event after a mini boot time with boot Apple's logo

iOS 7.1 Crashing and showing the Apple's boot logo. However this Apple's boot logo is showed only for few seconds. So, the device shows the "unlock screen". In the iPhone's diagnoses datas there are a new item event "TCCService" . After all, it is a hardware problem or software? If it is a iOS bug can I do something to fix it?

You can go to the feedback page www.apple.com/feedback and click on the link for a bug report. I believe you can copy and paste the information into the comments section. They do not respond to individual feedback, but they do take your email address and can contact you. I have seen it before.

I have a very long boot time with my Arch.

Especially after login into gnome, it takes quite a while until the desktop is visible. In meanwhile, I only see the wallpaper.  Does anyone has a suggestion how to fix that?

  • Y40 Windows 10 post update boot time problem

Hey Guys, I have a Y40 with 8GB RAM and 2 GB AMD Graphics and I updated my Windows 8 to Windows 10. I encountered the Power error which was dealt with earlier in another thread. I was able to fix it. Thanks. Now, I have another boot up related issue.I used to get 25-30 second boot time with Windows 8. But now, it takes 3 minutes to get to the login screen and another 3 minutes to start doing anything on the desktop. I get the normal lenovo log in screen once I press the power button. Then, the screen becomes black and stays that way for about 2 minutes doing nothing. I get the cursor that can move around and that is it. Even after login, It takes a long time to settle down and let me start working. I checked the startup menu and pushed the startup items to the bare minimum. Is anybody else experiencing the same problems?  If so Is there a way I can fix it?

I'll add to this by saying I am having similar lengthened boot and login times, but it appears that since resolving the graphics driver issue my boot times have sped up. Login times still take about 30 seconds longer than before. I'm assuming this is a Windows related issue, not a hardware-related issue.  Are you using a fusion drive or just a straight-up hard drive? I'm assuming my laptop is booting/logging in faster now because the fusion service Lenovo provides is learning what should be assigned to flash storage and what should be kept on the HDD. Give it another day or two and see if you notice a speed increase at all.

  • Hp dv7 intel, windows 10 extremely slow boot times and lagging and glicthy

I did the free upgrade and the boot time was really really slow. once it came up it was really laggy for a little bit too.i figured might of been an issue with the upgrade instead of a clean boot. so i erased and did a clean boot as well and still had the forever boot time with black screen.. i went back to windows 7 and no issues. has anyone else had this issue with the pavalilion dv7? if so what did you do to fix it?

Hi there  & ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I have looked into the issue you are having with the boot time being slow on your Notebook with Windows 10.  I did some research and found a way to make the boot time faster. Although this site is not affiliated with HP, it has some great step by step instructions. The topic is called Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10.  Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating for Windows 10. Updated Windows 10 drivers will become available on the HP Drivers and Downloads Page for your product. They will be released as they become available to HP. Please follow these provided troubleshooting steps, re-post and let me know how everything went. Thank you! Have a great day!

  • Awfully Slow Boot Time

Recently I have been experiencing very slow boot times with 10.6.5. Recently clocked it to be just over 2 minutes and up to 2 minutes 10 seconds (from the opening chime until finder loads). I have a MBP with 2.26 GHz Core Duo and 4 GB of RAM. Standard 160 GB HD (5400 Hitachi). I don't think it should take this long to load. I have repaired permissions and cleared caches to no avail. I only have 4 programs that start on login (iTunes Helper, Missing Sync, HP Scheduler and MS Au Daemon). I feel like this is an abnormally long start up time, am I wrong? Anyway, what should I do to resolve this or determine what is causing the long boot times. Thanks.
    Sean

So I just noticed that it takes about 40 seconds from the boot chime before I see the Apple logo and the spinning circle. After that the boot time would be normal (around 1 minute or 1:20). I am not running boot camp, but I do use parallels.
here is a copy of the full boot in system.log. I can't really decipher it, so I don't know how helpful it is.

  • Logic "Pro" 8 - Loading / Boot Times

I use both PT and Logic. They have about the same amount of plugs. App. 200.
Logic's boot time is soooooo slow compared to that of PT's. after taking a long time to load the plugs then Logic needs for ever to scan the EXS Lib - Every time:
As logic launched this morning I thought I'd make test. During Logic's launch I tried launching PT and quit and launch etc. until Logic was finally done booting...
4.5 times - boys - that is how many I could load and quit PT while Logic was booting.
Am I overlooking something obvious here or is Logic just getting slower with each version.
BTW - Logic was of course booted without DAE... thus - natively.
BTW2 - does ANYONE know if Apple plan to update Logic 8?
    Thanks

Running L8 on a G5dual, opening my basic default template takes between 20-30 seconds.
10.4.11 is my everyday boot partition.
Experimenting with 10.5.2 and -not- noticing any longer boot time with Logic.
Processor spikes and uneven CPU use in 10.5.2 (at least compared to Tiger)
Only complaints right now are minor but annoying...
    Small d@mn fonts!
L8 has noticably less visual appeal (aesthetics), too grey, too bland.
Would like the old defaults of opening a full matrix (cough) piano roll when clicking on a region. Am I missing a setting?
A few more similar nits & nats.

  • X220 Normal Boot Time?

I have an Intel 510 120GB installed and my x220 cold boots in about 65 seconds (time from pushing the power button to control of desktop). It's the factory win7 and I've only added a few apps like MS Office, mozilla, and Norton Antivirus.
Is that normal? I've heard about 20 second boot times with SSDs.

I just timed my X220 i7, with a 240GB Vertex2 SSD (Sata2) and from a cold shutdown, when i press power it takes about 7 seconds for the POST to complete, windows starts loading, and about 25 seconds from power button push the desktop appears and I have control of it right away, can open apps or folders, but stuff still loads on the icon tray, but the computer is responsive and usable until stuff finished loading about 40 seconds in.
You should run cyrstal disk benchmark on your SSD after it's fully booted, to see how it's performing.
