Booting without a Video Card?

Should a Dual 2.5 G5 (June 2004) be able to boot even without a video card installed?
My machine is in the shop for failing to boot: no chime, no LED, no video. The techs seem unsure of what actually ails it and want to order a replacement ATI 9600 GT to try out for process of elimination. This strikes me as a little odd.

i assume u using onboard graphic?
which BIOS using ?
for AMI is
RAM failure above 64 KB Check memory.
for Award is
Missing video adapter or bad video RAM
Check video adapter.
maybe due to bad RAM
if u can boot , with the grahic card , i advise is to go memtest86.com and download a copy of RAM diagnostic software to test your RAM.

I am trying to launch my MB without a video card. During start up it makes several beeps and seems to halt without booting. I have set the BIOS option 'Halt on' to 'No errors', but it didn't help. Is there any way to overcome this problem?

I quite often read about configurations that successfully run without video (either onboard or discrete). It is typical for the headless machines.
Those machines redirect it to something else. Typical to RS-232 or Networkcard.
They are not your normal desktop board.
I have a headless machine here, called a Cobalt Raq2, it outputs the screen via RS-232, else it's impossible to install anything on it.

  • H57M-ED65 without a Video Card?

    Hello -
Is there any setting that I may be missing in the BIOS of my H57M-ED65 that will allow it to boot without a Video Card in it?
Im using the 750 chip and its an ESX host for my home lab and I would prefer to keep it low power and not put a video card in it....
    Thanks

Not with that CPU, the quad core i5 750 doesn't have integrated graphics. You will need a dual core CPU (i3 or i5) with integrated graphics or a separate video card.
If you didn't know it, the graphics for that MB is in the CPU, not on the MB. You can't boot without some graphics device either, CPU with integrated graphics or discrete video card.

  • Setting up a new server without a video card?

I am looking into buying a G5 server to support my new graphics dept that will be using Macs for design work. I noticed that in configuring a G5 server that one of the options is to include a video card. If I decide not to include a card, is there some other way to setup a G5 server straight out of the box without it having a video card?

    Repent34-
Greetings. You can indeed do as suggested with ARD, the Admin tools and another Mac. If you are running more than one server then you might be able to justify the expense of those tools. A video card is a hundred bucks and a small and lightweight flat panel monitor ain't much these days.
If you decide that you need more servers in the future then you must decide what to do if and when that happens. Right now, the graphics card/monitor solution might be the easiest and most cost-effective.
If you have the bucks then indeed go for the good stuff.
I once justified an iPod to back my servers up because it mentions it in the Getting Started manual.

  • Can the P67A-GD65 boot without a graphic card?

    Hi,
    I just bought a P67A-GD65 with a Core i7 2600k and I want to operate the board without a
graphic card (as a server running Linux). To my surprise, the machine does not boot
with I remove the graphic card. I know it does not boot because I do not hear any
noise coming from the hard drive, nor do I see any SATA LED blinking. When I plug
in my ATI card, all is well.
I looked around in the UEFI BIOS and could not find any option to turn on/off.
The board is running FW 1.40.
    Is this a known limitation?

    Quote
No ? There is absolutly no way to get the card to boot and without a grafic card ? That is pretty bad isnt it ? :(
The mainboard was never intended to be used as a server as the OP had inquired about. With newer chipsets that have on-board graphics in the CPU, then it might be easy to configure. Not sure about this, but it may be possible to put a fake card or device in to trick it thinking it has a graphics card, but I have no information about it.

  • X58 PRO won't boot (memory or video card issue???)

    Hi all,
this is my first message here.
I have recently bought a X58 PRO motherboard to which I have connected the following devices: one HD, one DVD, the CPU (i7 950), one Video Card (GeForce 6600 pci-express) and three DDR3 modules from Corsair (named CMT6GX3M3A2000C8). According to Corsair website the modules CMT6GX3M3A2000C8 run on thie X58 PRO.
I have turned on the system, but the screen remains black and the motherboard issues an intermittent buzz sound.
    Besides:
The led close to the pci-express (where the video card is connected) is on.
The 5 CPU leds are all turned on.
The led close to the memory socket is off.
As far as I know, usually the intermittent buzz means that the motherboard doesn't recognize either the RAM or the video card, but I don't know if the buzz is different case by case (can be buzz be different according to the issue?) and in the manual I didn't find a troubleshotting chapter.
Is there a way which allow me to better identify where the issue would be (in memory or in Video Card... or something else)?
I have not tested neither the memory nor the video card on another system, thus I don't know if one of them is faulty.
    Can anyone please help me?
    many thanks in advance!
    Lorenzo

    Do a CMOS clear>>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Only insert one mem module. Check all your power connections to the board/s again that they are secure. You may want to reseat your CPU and check carefully that all the contact pads on the CPU do have imprints.
Ok, I'll try it this evening!
In the meanwhile, I thank you.

  • OVMS - Local display cuts out after boot DMS 59 Video Card

    Hey All -
We use OVM/OVS on what you might call 'desktop servers'. We have several setup. We recently purchased some more machines that I am installing OVS onto and will add them to the cluster.
However, these machines only video connection is DMS 59. As such, we are using a default DMS 59 to DVI splitter, and then just running a single connection from the splitter to a DVI capable monitor.
Using this, OVS can be installed. However, on each successive boot after installing the display will show GRUB, the boot, and then right before OVS loads its console the display ceases to function.
Now I assume this has to do with our DMS 59 connections - but I can't find any documentation about why this may not be supported or if I am missing a driver.
    Thoughts?

The bug is known, and a patch has been submitted: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80151. There's been no update since friday, so I wonder what the current status is, or if it's up for review at all.
Does anyone know how we can be notified when this patch hits the kernel?

  • Chimes, no video, no boot when video card installed.  Cause?

    Dual G5 2.0 (late '04?)
Used for 5 years, then system started suddenly powering off. Eventually wouldn't boot. Tried swapping out ATI X800XT vid card for a 9600 (both AGP) & it worked again for a couple days, then wouldn't boot again. Put it aside for a while, came back to it yesterday, and came to these conclusions:
    1) with X800XT installed, the system (PSU) clicks once, then nothing. no chime, no lights, no fans.
    2) with 9600 installed, it chimes, power light on & steady, fans start, I hear the HDD click once, then nothing. no video out. eventually the fans go into overdrive.
    3) WITHOUT a video card, it chimes, light on, fans OK, and I hear the HDD running through what I assume to be a boot sequence.
    4) I have reset the PMU and replaced the battery. Also tried CMD-CNTL-O-F. Nothing.
Thinking it might be the power supply? Where do I go from here to diagnose the cause?
If it's the logic board, I'll tear out the guts & sell on ebay. If it's the PSU, I've read about someone replacing it with a standard PC ATX supply (don't want to spend the $$ for a G5 PSU.)
    Thanks for any suggestions!

OK, assuming you have file sharing enabled, when you bring the machine up without video card, can you connect to it from another computer on the same LAN?
The fact that either video card blocks the boot is suggestive of maybe a power supply problem, though in my experience an overload condition perceived by the power supply will result in a click from the supply and the machine powering down completely.
That was a situation I had some time ago before replacing the supply. What would happen was that in a non-safe boot, when the kexts for the Ultra6800 loaded, the current draw would increase and the supply would trip itself off. (Puzzling mystery solution revealed just now in formulating the reply. Thanks.)
That being said, the fact that safe boot doesn't help plus the other differential symptoms between the cards really does suggest a failing power supply. A new supply around the web is on the order of $200, but there are plenty of used ones on eBay for much less, occasionally even a new one goes at a bargain.
One thing you could do is blow the probably well-stocked dust supply out of the power supply. Better to remove and do that outside, but you can make something of a dent with the power supply in the enclosure. Just be sure to do it outside, because the dust that can come out will probably be pretty nasty. (Of this I have personal experience!) Of course, under what you have reported, this has a slim chance of actually helping.

  • Desktop is not defaulting to PCI Express video card

Installed a Nvidia GTX 560TI w/appropriate power supply AFTER disabling secure boot and enabling legacy support.  The computer booted to the video card after the second try reboot, drivers successfully installed.  Later after attempting to wake the computer from sleep it has defaulted back to the onboard video WITHOUT restarting.  Now will not recognize PCI express card.

    Hi,
What power supply are your using?  The stardard HP 460 watt power supply is insufficient for the NVIDIA 560 TI as it requires two 6 pin PCI-E power connectors.
Go back into the BIOS and make sure that Legacy mode is enabled and Secure boot is disabled. Save the changes and power off. Now power up and see if the system recognizes the discrete video card.
BTW - the PC needs to completely power down and back up before the BIOS will rescan for hardware changes.

  • Intel D2700DC + Arch won't boot without display

I've faced really wierd (to me) problem running Arch as mini webserver on the Intel D2700DC mini-ITX board with Atom D2700 integrated and NM10 Express chipset.
I successfully installed the system, configured network and started sshd to continue setting up other services remotely via ssh console. Then I disconnected the keyboard and display from the case and put it under the table. After that I was quiet surprised that the system was not starting up anymore.
After some investigation I've found that the system is not booting if no display is attached to the DVI port of the motherboard. If I start the system with display disconnected, I can hear one beep that notifies about successful BIOS POST, HDD led blinks 2-3 times, and then just nothing happens. System isn't booting up. If I attach the display right after that - nothing is seen on the screen, and display is immediately falling into sleep mode. Keyboard is still active though, and if I press ctrl+alt+del - the system is restarting, and, if display was just connected, it boots ok then. Also it boots fine from the cold state if the display was attached to the DVI port at the time of powering on.
As I can assume from the timings and HDD led blinking, the boot process stops right after GRUB is loaded. There's nothing in system log, cause it seems that boot hangs just before the kernel is loaded by GRUB. I'm really stuck and don't know how to work around this situation, because if the display was disconnected when system was powered on - then there's no way to see anything on the screen until next reboot, and if the display was connected - then the system boots OK.
    One more thing to notice:
There was an old CentOS installation on the HDD, to which I installed Arch Linux. I've tried to boot it once or twice before installing Arch, and, as I could remember, it could boot up without display connected, on the very same hardware. So I suppose it's definitely something in Arch that is preventing the system to boot without the display.
I guess that when no display is connected at boot time, NM10 chipset completely disables onboard video, and because of this we can't see anything on the display until the system is restarted. But this somehow affects Arch, so it can't boot without any video hardware present.

I'm afraid there's no such option, but it looks like arch isn't booting just because no graphics card is detected in the system when display it disabled during powering up.
There is a couple of similar topics about some other linux distros can't boot without video card inserted ([1], [2]) with some recommendations on what to do in such a case.
I've followed them - including enabling serial console in /etc/inittab, setting nomodeset in kernel line in grub's menu.lst, checking for enabled splash-screens... but that didn't help.
Does anyone know what options should be tuned in order to boot Arch without any active graphics card present in the system hardware?

  • Z97 Gaming 9 AC not registering Video Card

Motherboard doesn't see the video card, I've updated Bios twice, board had ver 1.0 installed then upgraded to 1.7 and now to 1.7B1, replaced the video card with others 780i, 680, 580 they all work on other motherboards including the 980.
Have cleared CMOS a few times.  Only video output is coming from the cpu itself.  Have tried different power supplies, changed wiring, different memory sticks, single stick etc.  Board Explorer in bios doesn't show any of the video cards since first boot-up thru my changing all the parts I could think of, they all work in other rigs.  Can't think of anything else to troubleshoot.
Took it out of case and did the bare stuff, keyboard, mouse, boot drive and video card and still no dice.  Anything I might be missing?

  • Mac Pro video card in a PM G5 dual 2.0?????

Will the stock Mac Pro video card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, work in a PowerMac G5 Duallie 2.0 (mid 2004 model) with the pci-x slots? Thankx! And would a Cube G4 Rage 128 video card work in thePM G5? (I bought a G5 without a video card and I need to test it and find a cheap video card for it). Thx again!

No. It is PCI Express card anyway.

  • Faulty motherboard/video card

black screen on native moniter but with external moniter can see.cannot boot normally with video card enabled, can only see on external moniter.no aero, but it would normally have it. HD 5470/512 MB discrete system board with card readercpu i3 370m4gb ram500 gb storagecd drivehp g62t-350wv686av video card soldered to motherboard

That pretty much sizes it up. So even on an external monitor you have low res and color depth? That is almost for sure a bad video card chip which is the same as saying a bad motherboard.

  • Video Card Intergration?

    Hi,
I'm wanting to switch from PC to Mac, and have been looking at buying a MacBook. I'm a fan of The Sims 2, and so I want to be able to play it when I get a MacBook.
    Checking with the specification on this website;
    http://www.aspyr.com/product/game_specs/6
Everything seems fine, except the video card aspect and PowerPC G4/G5 (what is this?). I don't know what video card a MacBook comes with, and if it doesn't come with one, is it possible to put one in?
If that it a little confusing, then I'd like to know if anyone who plays The Sims 2 on a MacBook? if they had to buy a video card? and if not does it play okay (without a video card)?

    Comparison:
    MacBook: £799.01
    1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    1GB Memory
    60GB Hard Drive
    GMA 950 Video Chipset
    13" Screen
    MacBook Pro: £1340.01
    2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    1GB Memory
    120GB Hard Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB SDRAM
    15" Screen
The two have a huge difference in price, but really very little difference in hardware in my opinion. Personally I don't need the greater processor, or the larger hard drive. Also I don't think I would stretch just for the extra 2" screen size.
It's a shame that the MacBook doesn't have a good graphics card, but I think I'll stick with getting a MacBook due to a MacBook Pro being almost £500 more.
I'm not a huge gaming fan, and would only play The Sims 2, and it's expansion packs. I don't believe the extra £500 is worth it.
Thanks anyway for all the help. When I do get a MacBook I'll try The Sims 2 with Rosetta.
