  • BOOTMGR is compressed - no CD drive - Roxio BackOnTrack link is broken - now what?

My friend here was using a HP Mini 110-1016LA with Windows XP and decided to compress the C: drive to save space.  This compressed an essential file and when she turned it back on got this error message:
    BOOTMGR is compressed
    Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart
I did online research to try to figure out how to solve this problem.  I found lots of information (in Spanish) here:
    http://www.odomera.com/2009/07/auxilio-me-sale-bootmgr-is-compressed.html
Basically you're supposed to insert the Windows installation discs to recover the compressed BOOTMGR file, but since the computer does not have any CD drive and didn't come with discs anyway, it has to be done from a USB.
Here is what I came up with:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02510149&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_US...
In that link HP provides a solution, but it is dependent on being able to download a program from Roxio.  They provide a link, but that link doesn't work.  I searched some and found another link, but it didn't work either.
The first blog provided a solution that works if you have Vista or Windows 7: http://www.odomera.com/2011/01/disco-inicio-usb-vista-y-7.html
But this is XP so no luck.
Microsoft provides a download for floppy (!) but I suspect it wouldn't be useful:
    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=18804
And... this link looks promising, but the browser freezes when I try to play the video, so I'm a bit nervous about just downloading from the link provided and running it on my computer.
    http://tuts4tech.net/2009/07/14/creating-a-usb-bootable-xp-recovery-console/
Can you help me here?  I'm computer-literate but not an expert.  Maybe you didn't need me to provide all the links but I figured it couldn't hurt to let you know what I've already tried.
    Thank you ever so much.

    HI,
I just checked the link and it does work.
It brings you to a registration page. You will need to register and then you can access the download
    There is no cost.

  • BOOTMGR is compressed in my macbookair bootcamp partition!

I somehow managed to compress the hardrive and when I went into bootcamp the screen turned black and says "BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart". Unfortunately whenever I press ctrl+alt+delete it does restar and remains on the screen. I can't even access my mac partition. Is there any way to fix this?

If it is not giving you access to your mac partion either, there isn't much you can do.
I would try to insert the windows disk into your superdrive/external optical drive, restart, and then use whatever recovery options are available, if nothing happens, I reccommend taking to a technitian who works with windows pc's and macs

  • Bootmgr compresses, ctl+alt+delete to restart

I get the above error when I try to restart my computer.  I installed an AVG product that compressed a bunch of files.
I have followed the suggestion online as follows
    inserted windows disc
    ctl alt delete
    press the blue button
    press f12
selected the top option, 2: atapi cdo: hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-u20n-(s2)
Then it does to bootmgr is compressed error
sometimes it give a press f1 for set up message.  I have no idea where to go from there.
Does anyone have any advice?  It is entirely likely that I have the wrong windows CD.
I have ltd experience with software, so the more simple the instructions the better.

    Hello,
I have been reading up on this error, and found two possible solutions:
Boot the computer from a Windows 7 installation disc, and select the "Startup Computer" from System Recovery Options to automatically fix the compressed files.
Remove the hard disk drive from the ThinkPad and connect it to another computer running Windows 7 as a secondary hard disk drive.  It could be connected via a USB to SATA cable, plugged into one of the internal SATA connectors, and so forth—the type of connection does not matter as long as it's not the primary boot drive.  Boot the system as you normally would, open My Computer, right-click on the drive, select Properties from the popup context menu, and on the General tab, uncheck the "Compress this drive to save disk space" option.  It may take a while to run, especially over a USB connection.
Hopefully, ione of those will get you up and running without having to reformat the hard disk drive.

  • Windows 7 Bootmgr compressed on MBP Retina

I compressed my Bootcamp partition while using Windows 7 (idiot ).
Now I can't boot Windows 7 anymore, because of getting the "Bootmgr is compressed" error.
I have read that this can be easily fixed with the Windows 7 installation disc.
Unfortunately the MBP Retina doesn't have an optical drive. I did the Windows installation by using an USB stick.
My question is: How can I boot the Windows Repair environment from the USB Stick to get the Bootmgr fixed?
Can I also use the "Windows 7 repair disc" files, copied on a USB Stick, to get this fixed?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Bootmgr problem - can't boot windows

    Hi.
Please help me with my boot problem. I cannot access my computer, windows will not boot.
    I am running windows 7.
Upon starting up my laptop, I get the message "bootmgr is compressed - press ctrl alt del to restart"
I have searched for the problem around the internet, and it seems to be due to people compressing their hard drive to save space and cancelling half way through.
I have not done this- I was playing around with a SLIC Loader program and installed it by mistake, now I can't boot windows.
I have tried using my windows 7 DVD to repair the startup but it didn't work.
I have also tried to restore but I did not set any restore points.
I have tried using some command prompt bootmgr reset procedures which also did not work.
Can I somehow get a backup of bootmgr and restore it?
    Please help
    Thanks

    Hi
I assume your boot manager is damage. Probably by installing the SLIC Loader program
My idea was simply; boot from Win 7 disk and then try to get into the command console.
There you could use the command FIXMBR
But if this will not help then you should take your Windows disk or Toshiba recovery disk and should reinstall the whole system again.

This is a known problem with a known solution.
It happens when you compress the whole C drive. You can't execute files that are compressed!
For this, you need either a 64-bit Vista repair disc or a Windows Vista installation DVD. Or you can use another 64-bit Windows Vista computer to burn a repair disc. (They call it "recovery disc" here.)

It seems that you are experiencing an error similar to the bootmgr is compressed error message and I suspect the steps will be the same.
Was anything done prior to this happening (e.g. compressing the hard drive, updates, etc.)?
Do you get the error after the HP logo, but before Windows is loaded?
Do you have a copy of a Windows 7 disk? If so, it will have some tools on the disk that will help with correcting this issue. If not, a recovery may be necessary.
Does the behavior match any of the links in this post by SpiritX on the Microsoft Ansers forums?

  • How do I DEcompress "BOOTMGR"?

I'm dual-booting Windows Vista Ultimate and Mac OS X 10.5.2. When I enter the Boot Camp screen after pressing the option key, and select 'Windows,' I get the following message:
    BOOTMGR IS COMPRESSED.
Press crtl + alt + del to restart.
How can I decompress BOOTMGR (Boot Manager)? Is it possible to do it within Leopard, going to the Windows Partition? When I went to the Windows Partition, I found "BOOTMGR" and I right-clicked it. It had the option to compress, NOT TO DECOMPRESS!
Can somebody help me? I would greatly appreciate it and thanks for your time.

you dont. you better try and install Vista with Bootcamp again, cause if you mess things up you may loose Leopard too.
you could experiment with this: http://auscoder.com/2007-05-18/restore-vista-mbr-bootloader.html
but then you better back up Leopard. i think reinstalling is the safer option.

  • R&R 4 Problems with Vista

Hi. Recently I have been having some problems when I went to do a restore from a backup with Lenovo Rescue and Recovery 4. The restore works fine, but when my PC reboots, I get the message "BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart." I am guessing that the backup is a compressed version of my system at that time, and it hasn't decompressed properly. Can anyone help? Also, try not to get too technical. I may get lost .

This posting elsewhere offers a solution. Hope it works for you.

  • \Boot\BCD error (0x000014c)

Here's the full story.  A friend of mine gave me their laptop because they weren't able to get it to boot.  It was having the "BOOTMGR is compressed" error, so I booted up my MiniPE and uncompressed the drive.  After uncompressing, I restarted the computer and it booted up just fine.  Once inside Windows, I went to Shut Down...Restart the computer.  Once it rebooted, instead of going to Windows I get the error as follows:
Windows failed to start.  A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.  To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
    3. Click "Repair your computer."
    File: \Boot\BCD
    Status: 0xc000014c
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
Alright, so I've seen this error a bunch of times before.  Until now, I had only ever seen this error on Vista machines and I've read that it can happen to Win 7 users, too.  The problem is, this computer is running Windows XP SP3.
When my buddy bought this laptop (HP Mini 1000... the really tiny one with no built-in DVD/CD and only has a 16GB SanDisk pSSD drive), he opted to buy the Windows XP Downgrade directly from HP.  This computer normally runs Vista (I don't know how with its specs) but this one was imaged by HP for Windows XP.
Is there a solution for this for XP users?  I've already run CHKDSK which corrected a lot of errors, and I've already run an MBRFIX which didn't do squat.  I wouldn't normally hesitate to run a Repair on the OS, but HP didn't send him any operating system discs.  If I use a TechNet XP Home SP3 cd, I don't think it will accept his product key (damn HP OEM).
    Any suggestions?
P.S. This isn't related, but what's with all the healthpills posts advertising online pharmaceuticals?  Do they really think anyone who frequents tech support forums are gonna follow that link?  :o

Actually it is not hard to fix this this problem
What you will need to fix it is :
    1- A 2gig flashdrive (I used a 2g and it worked,not sure if any other size works)
First visit this link  https://www.dropbox.com/s/t88gryfudq3741n/RepairDiscWindowsVista32-bit.iso (Thats my dropbox which contains the Windows vista Iso  DO NOT EXTRACT IT , just put it on your desktop and leave it there.
2-Visit this link and download and download the usb installer(On the bottom of the page it will mark Download uii in a blue box) , this will turn your flashdrive into a bootable flash drive http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
3-Run the program and it should look like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/100773530@N06/
(Make sure you select Windows Vista Installer and note that this will not reset anything on your victim Computer )
4-Now in the select your iso option in the program select the iso which you downloaded from my dropbox by selecting browse AGAIN DO NOT EXTRACT
5-Now put your flashdrive in your computer and select the drive And when everything is done it should look like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/100773530@N06/
6-Now select create and note that THIS WILL FORMAT YOUR FLASHDRIVE\
7-Now you have a bootable flashdrive
8-Now insert your flashdrive into yoor victim computer and go into your Bios and set your usb as your first boot device by moving it first in the order (If you dont know how to do this visit this link) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8VZ95_XFA8
9-Now restart your computer and it should mark Windows is Loading files on bottom of the screen Just leave your victim computer like this for about 10 - 15 minutes and it should just have a blank screen without the user accounts.
10-Restart your computer by pressing the button on the Tower and select Last known Good Configiration DO NOT TAKE OUT YOUR FLASHDRIVE and your computer will start normally
11-Take out your flashdrive and restart computer again and you are good to go
When this works please vote thats all i ask Hope I helped you

  • Vista bootmgr compressed VISTA - need command prompt!

I am at wit's end and even though my 8 year old bought his HP G60 with his own money, I am about to hurl it out the window as I wasn't "consulted" and would not have condoned this unfamiliar to me Vista O/S.
All I wanted to do was reset the computer/system to factory defaults.  He is gaming now a few years later with nothing important and seemed the quickest way to clean up the PC.  I create recovery disks, a NICE LITTLE PROCESS that took 3 entire days.  NO JOKE.  I had to place every few hours COLD PACKS under and on it because this thing from day one runs hotter then heck.
So voila, it's done.  And reboots.  And I hope there is some other bored GEEK reading this because I can't find ONE POST on the entire Al Gore Internet that gets me to a command prompt without using install disks.  This HP shipped with no install o/s disks.  I created the recovery as a safety net, and it's starting over AGAIN and personally, I don't have 3 more days and hot pack maintenance in me before I just buy a new one.  PLEASE HELP.  It seems simple enough to get to a command prompt and uncompress something I never even intended to compress nor did in any keystroke of my imagination.
He is losing faith in his mother who he believes created MPLS....  got a network problem, I'm your gal.  Word won't load, call IT.  Windows XP has an issue, UNIX, learning Win7... but this Vista?  grrrrrr.  Where's the wine for my WHINE?

I guess I only said it in the subject. boot gets BOOMGR is compressed. Press Control Alt Del to restart. Tried the normal ways to boot and get into some start up, but seems I need a command prompt to uncompress...

  • I have compaq cq50. was VISTA upgraded to WIN 7. Recovery disks not working. BOOTMGR compressed

will not boot up.  I have 2 recovery disks, the 1 of 2 will take but 2 of 2 disk doesnt run.

    Hi:
If you are trying to use the Vista recovery disks and they are not working, and you can read your Vista product key on the bottom of your notebook, then you can make your own Vista installation disk by reading the guidance below.
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them an my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-v....
After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.
