Bootpicker Won't Boot Windows on MacBook Pro

+We use bootpicker on iMacs, MacBooks, Minis and haven't had any problems until now. Suddenly the late 2008 MacBook Pro won't boot into Windows from bootpicker.+
+It's exactly the same problem described in this archived post that I've quoted below. Same log message as well.+
+Anyone found a solution for this?+
*Bootpicker doesn't reboot automatically on Windows selection*
Posted: Oct 17, 2008 3:00 PM
Hi all! Yesterday I installed Bootpicker (2.1.2) which now is provided by Apple (http://www.apple.com/education/it/bootpicker/) to select between Mac OS X 10.5 and Windows (Boot Camp).
It works fine except following: The Bootpicker menu is displayed after loading Mac OS X directly before Mac OS's login dialog. When I pick Mac OS the Mac OS login dialog is displayed - fine. When I select Windows, also the Mac OS login dialog is displayed. I had expected that in this case Bootpicker will automatically reboot the machine to start up from the Windows partition. Instead I have to manually select the reboot button in the login dialog.
I think there is something wrong. The /Library/Logs/bp.log says following:
17:55:43 BootPicker: Initiating.
17:55:44 BootPicker: Configuring interface for Windows volume/device: /dev/disk0s3
17:55:46 BootPicker: User chose Windows.
17:55:46 BootPicker: Bless args: (
"--device",
"/dev/disk0s3",
"--setBoot",
"--legacy",
"--nextonly"
17:55:47 BootPicker: Flagging slice 3
fdisk: could not open MBR file /usr/standalone/i386/boot0: No such file or directory
Enter 'help' for information
fdisk: 1> Partition 3 marked active.
fdisk:*1> Device could not be accessed exclusively.
A reboot will be needed for changes to take effect. OK? [n] Writing MBR at offset 0.
fdisk: 1> 17:55:47 BootPicker: Terminating.
May be the unsuccessful configuration of the MBR causes the failure? Any other experiences or suggestions?

I think that the issue might be that there is no boot0 in /usr/standalone/i386. I have had similar issues lately when trying to make a bootable usb memory. I think this is necessary for the legacy option in the bless utility. If some one have a solution for this I would like to know as well.

  • External disks (Firewire/USB) won't boot in late Macbook Pro 2013, but do work in earlier Mac's. How to fix it?

    Hi
It always worked, till now. If I sell a Apple notebook because I bought a new one, I make a clone with CCC and with Command-R or Choose Startup disk I say to the new machine: now eat this, here's my old stuff.
It's a great way of upgrading to a new machine. But.. my late Macbook Pro 2013 (Retina, 16 Gb) doesn't allow me to boot from any of my disks: not Firewire, not USB 2.0 and not USB 3.0 (Imagine how many hours I lost to find this out). Btw, the disk image did boot on ANY OTHER Mac, besides the late Macbook Pro 2013.
In some threads, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5499231?tstart=0, it's suggested that it has to do with a special Maverick that doesn't allow older "machines" to be booted from USB.
Anyway, here I am with a tremendous problem. Got my files safe in a clone, but my machine doesn't allow me to boot from it. Btw, out of desperation I tried to use the Migration Assistant, but that made a mess of Adobe versions.
Is there any workaround? How do I get the files + system files from my USB / Firewire disk to my Macbook Pro?

I took the precaution to update my old Macbook Pro to the same Maverick version and EFF as my new one. The problem is rooted somewhere in the special version (and not the Combo) of Maverick.
Now I need something to outwit this. Gonna try to make an image of the clone, deleting a version file and than feed it once more. Will post the results here.

I recently replaced my hard drive for my Macbook pro. I built a bootable SSD drive in a SATA/USB caddy, which works perfectly until I install it in my laptop where it will not boot. Has anyone got any ideas why this might be the case?

    What model MBP?  (exactly)
    What model SSD?
How did oyu test it in the caddy?  Most dont work on bridges. Min didnt.
and..why is this is the xserve section?

  • MacBook pro won't boot from disc, MacBook pro won't boot from disc, MacBook pro won't boot from disc

I bought a MacBook pro unibody a1286 model faulty off eBay and am attempting to resserect it. it came without a battery, HDD or charger. I have bought all 3 however no harddrive is installed yet as it hasn't arrived.
The logic board required replacing so I have done this, I noticed a pin sized hole in the keyboard ribbon cable when doing the replacement.
My question is, do I need the harddrive in for the laptop to function relatively normally? I've tried putting the OSX Lion disc in to see if I can get any activity but it won't load, just makes disc drive noises. The laptop gets very hot as the fans don't appear to activate although they do work.
The keyboard backlight also doesn't light up whether this is due to the hole I don't know. It does power on an chime and I can get to a screen with a cursor if I hold ALT, any further information would be greatly appreciated.

This is where you would install OS X, so yes, you need a hard drive.

  • Windows 7 won't boot in modified MacBook Pro

I've installed a 750 GB hybrid drive into my optical bay, and kept the original 250 GB SSD in the primary bay.  I've moved Mac OS to the hybrid drive.  Despite having a bootable USB with Win 7 (created in XP using the Windows download tool, and a Win 7 32-bit ISO downloaded from Microsoft's support forum), and the Apple drivers on a 2nd USB stick downloaded with Bootcamp, the Bootcamp assistant doesn't appear to recognize the bootable USB, as Windows Installation will not launch when Bootcamp quits.  When I look at my primary drive, it is formatted as FAT 32, and is clean & empty!

Thank you, Csound1; this makes sense (I assume OS X prefers residence on the primary drive from the boot point of view).  One other question- I'd rather work in 64-bit mode if possible, and have the Win 7 64-bit version as well.  When I download the 64-bit ISO using win XP (inside VMWare fusion), the bootable USB download tool gives me an error- I understand that writing a 64-bit ISO from a 32-bit platform is an issue.  Do you know how to address this, or where I can look?

    Hello Bhagyeshree
Check out the articles below to troubleshoot issues with connecting to Wi-Fi. Start with creating a new Network Location and then search for a Wi-Fi network and if that does not work, then go through second article to troubleshoot the issue further.

  • My iPhone 5 won't connect to my macbook pro retina over bluetooth?

My iPhone 5 won't connect to my macbook pro retina over bluetooth?

Ah, sure it actually won't.  I have the same problem, and I contacted Apple Support.  They told me that there is an incompatability between the iphone 5 and MacBook Pro Retina such that Bluetooth pairing is not possible.
The Support Agent actually had the audacity to tell me this was part of the design of the OS on the MacBook Pro, like Windows people saying, "That's not a bug.  It's a feature!!"
Personally, I think this is insane.  While I was trying to tether the iphone to the MacBook Pro retina for an internet connection, there are other reasons related to file transfers for which one would want to pair the iphone 5 with the MacBook Pro retina.
I am hoping this "feature" is fixed in iOS 7, and/or in some dot release of Mac OS 10.8.
By the way, the personal hotspot feature on my Verizon iphone 5 works great either via a wifi or USB connection.  There are occaisions, however, when one would 1) not have a USB cable, and/or 2) have another wifi relationship between the phone and a network that one would not want to have to "forget" in order for it not to connect to that wifi network.  The Macbook will not find the iphone as a wifi hotspot if the iphone is connected to wifi in the first place.  At least mine won't.

  • I can boot up my macbook pro but all i see is the wallpaper and the dock and the toolbar at the top. I can not see my hard drive or anything else. please help

Please help. I can boot up my macbook pro and log in but after that all i see is the wallpaper, toolbar and the dock. In the dock it has 2 ? where the doc and download folders should be.  If I open up a new finder window it doesnt show anything in there no hard drive or anything. If anyone konws how to help let me know please and thank you.

Agree with baltwo, though even if you have saved the install app I wouldn't use it unless its been used to install a known good copy of the OS already.
In your case, that probably means start fresh:
Restart the computer, holding down 'command' and 'r'. When the recovery disk window shows, choose 'Reinstall Mac OS X'.

  • When I boot up my macbook pro, it takes forever to start and I got grey screen...Help Please.

Just a minute ago I tried to boot up my macbook pro...normally the grey screen pops up with the whirring wheel, and then my Lion log-in screen comes up and all is well.  This time, however, the whirring wheel spun forever on the grey apple screen. Then the wheel stopped and it went to a solid grey screen with apple...and nothing for about 10-15 seconds.  Eventually it came up. BTW, this was the 2nd time I tried to boot because the first time, the grey screen with the whirring wheel stayed up for several minutes so I rebooted.
Anyone know what might be wrong? Thanks so much for your input!

  • Hi! I got movies on my external hard drive that are AVI kind and won't play on my macbook pro? need some help please!!

Hi! I got Movies on my external hard drive that are AVI kind and won't play on my macbook pro? When I start playing the movie a message pops up and says "a required codec is not available". I tried flip4mac, xvid, divx already and still not playing my video. need some help please!! thanks.

Although vlc mentioned above is a much more powerful and better player you could try installing Perian if you insist on using the quicktime player.  It may supply the codec it needs.
Not sure why you wouldn't be able to play straight avi files though in quicktime.

  • HT5628 Is it possible to install MS-Windows on MacBook Pro as the only OS

Is it possible to install MS-Windows on MacBook Pro as the only OS, using all the space of the SSD, by de-isntalling thus completely the Mac OS?

    Yes.
    but
You will have to erase the drive completely and install Windows, you can't achieve it just by deleting OSX
I do not recommend that you do it.
