Boots fine, but won't Safe Boot

All of a sudden, I've been having two problems. The first one I've posted already, but will list here in case one has to do with the other.
The first problem is that I can't open any disk images. I repaired permissions, repaired disk (it was fine), got rid of the recommended extensions and caches and rebooted, tried another user login, nothing helps.
The new problem is that I tried doing a Safe Boot (hold down the shift key after the startup chime), and it hangs at the gray apple and spinning gear. Mind you, the computer boots just fine the normal way (no keys depressed during boot). Any ideas of what's going on?

Did you use Disk Utility from a backup/clone emergency boot drive?
How about Single User Mode and running fsck command to repair the drive?
Safe Boot sounds like it is unable to replay the journal file properly - or something - and that you have a dirty file system directory issue.
Or, a bad SHIFT KEY ;-( (unlikely, or bad USB cable connection).
Some of us have a policy of never using "delta" software updates, only using the combo update (standalone), and once in awhile, MacFixit/MacIntouch and others have recommended rerunning the combo update again to fix some "minor" problems.
I am a fan of using Applejack before any update to check the drive, delete caches, remove swap files, look for corrupt plists, after running fsck. And to never use the computer during or while it is being updated, which has been known to lead to problems.

  • Intel Mini starts fine, but won't *Restart* after serious upgrades

Experienced Mac user, but stumped with this one:
Picked up a fairly cheap Intel Mini Core Duo to use as a HTPC.
Upgraded the CPU to a T7400 Core 2 Duo, removed the internal SATA drive and added an external 1TB SATA drive in a NewerTech V3 Stacker case as the primary drive for the machine. Installed Leopard, which went fine. Machine has 2GB RAM and boots up just fine. *All is good, except that the machine won't Restart. Starts just fine. Shuts down just fine. But it won't restart.*
I've attempted to zap the PRAM using the old Command-Option-P-R, but all I get is one chime; it won't cycle through multiple times. I've tried resetting the PMU (using the remove cables/wait/insert power cable while pressing power button/press power button again method, but there is no change in the restart behavior. So I'm stumped and could use some suggestions for other things to try.
Anyone on here done any similar upgrades and/or seen similar behavior? Did I forget to reconnect a wire somewhere? If I crack the case again, is there a manual reset I can perform on the PMU? BTW, the behavior is the same regardless of whether the HDD is connected.
    TIA,
    mosk

Thanks, tried that (and tried it with the CMOS battery removed), and it didn't solve the problem. I'm stumped. I've tried resetting the SMC, which also had no effect on the problem. If I try to zap the PRAM using the traditional four key chord, it will shutdown (with power light still on) but won't reboot. Same if I choose Restart form the Apple menu: it gets the job half done, but won't reboot. So it seems to be a very specific failure: something in the Restart sequence is hanging up, while the Start and Shutdown sequences work fine.
    A puzzler...

  • CS4 opens fine, but won't open images

    Hello,
I'm hoping someone here can help me.
I'm on my third uninstall/reinstall of PS CS4 with the same issue. I can open the application just fine, but I can't open any files. Photoshop just hangs up when I try to open anything and won't respond. It seemed to start with PS just running laggy when it came to opening and saving files, with intermitent "not responding" notices in the top bar, but after a few seconds those went away... then a few days ago, it just stopped responding once opened.
I know about the Wacom tablet driver problem, and I do use an Intuous3 (and I downloaded the new drivers) but even with the removal of all the drivers and the tablet from my computer completely, I'm still having the same problem.
I'm running 11.0.2 on a Windows machine running Windows OS7:
Processor: AMD Turion II Ultra-Core Mobile 620 2.50GHz
    RAM: 4GB
    64-bit OS
Graphics card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530
    Thank you.

Have you tried trashing the Preferences?

  • PS downloaded via CC seemed to download fine but won't work. Won't even open a file/document.

I recently got a new computer and I have CC so I downloaded the CC app and downloaded LR and PS. LR runs/works fine. PS seemed to download ok but won't even open a new file:picture. I am very frustrated as I have spoken with CC tech support and they were of no help, in fact that didn't even have a clue how to navigate Windows 8! I have been working on this for a week and now very behind on my editing. Not sure who to call or what to do. Please help!! Thank you!!!

What does the crash report say about the name of the faulting module?
Yes, crashes like that are usually due to the video card driver. (though I was guessing from the original description that the image was just not drawing)
Have you tried disabling GPU drawing in Photoshop before opening a document?
Have you updated your video card driver from the GPU maker's website?

  • Podcast feed works fine, but won't submit. Why?!

    Hi,
I have been trying to submit my podcast to iTunes, but for some reason it won't accept it.
    www.firestationartscentre.com/podcasts/strange_and_beautiful/feed.xml
The feed works fine with a manual subscribe, all episodes show up fine, but I get a 500 error everytime I try to submit it.
    Any ideas please!?!
    Very frustrated,
    Dan

Of course it's not something I can test; possibly there is a glitch going on at the server, in which case it will probably sort itself if you wait a bit. I should give it until tomorrow: if it doesn't sort itself out I can only suggest emailing them at podcasts 'at' apple.com (though you may just get a form email telling you how to submit a podcast, which you already know).

  • USB Apple modem sends faxes fine but won't receive

I've set up an Apple USB modem and while I can send Faxes fine, it won't receive: the call comes in, the little message at the top margin of the screen says "ringing", but it just won't pick up! I have it set to answer after 2 rings... Any ideas?
    Mike

    Hey Jason,
I have ran into this situation quite a few times in my experiences with fax issues,  it very well could be the digital line itself. My last suggestions for you would be to try a power reset on the printer, and also try a filter on the fax line to see if that could help the line. If you are still having issues with sending faxes, give us a call to our technical support to see if there are any more options for you.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
Here is an example of a filter:

  • Drive looks fine, but won't boot.

Computer suddenly stopped recognizing the internal drive as the startup disc -- I get the ol' folder with the ? on it.
    1. Started up from the tiger intall disc, selected the internal drive as the startup disc, no go.
    2. Ran disc repair on the internal drive from the install disc, it found no problems but computer still won't start up from it.
    3. Started up from my bootable backup on an external drive. Looked at contents of the problem internal drive, everything looks fine on it, I can access folders, run applications, all content is there, does not act as if it's failing (except of course that it won't boot.)
4.Did an Archive and install, which went flawlessly, but did not help, computer still won't boot up from the internal drive. Resetting the pram did not help, and it won't boot in safe mode either.
What should be my next step?

    The latest:
    1. Erased the internal drive, loaded fresh OSX Tiger from the original disk. Opened and closed some applications, made some documents, restarted a couple of times, shutdown and started back up a couple of times. Everything working just fine.
You wrote zeros to the drive? You didn't just erase it?
    2. Restored to the internal from external backup, using superduper. (and had superduper repair permissions on the backup before doing the restore.) Everything seemed fine at first. I restarted to the internal and it worked. Performed a few functions, tried restarting again and kablooey, back to the same thing; pauses on the flashing ? folder for a few seconds, then goes to the white apple screen, and that's as far as it will go.
    3. Tried using both option restart, and restarting from the startup disk system pref., neither works. I noticed that on option restart, the the icon that comes up on the screen for my internal does not have the name I gave it, just a little 'diamond G' sort of symbol under it, which I assume is the maker Seagate's symbol. My external's icon does have its assigned name. In the startup disk preference and on the desktop (when I'm up and running from the external), the internal's assigned name is there. So it's only when doing an option restart that the internal's name is missing.
The last backup of the internal was done 3 or 4 days before this startup problem began, and the computer was used plenty during those days (family of five, with that many user profiles on the computer), so if there's something on the backup that is causing this problem, it's strange that it didn't cause any problems during those few days. And also strange that it doesn't cause a problem for the external drive, only for the internal.
How many restarts during those 3 or 4 days? How many times have you successfully booted from the external and what did you do while booted from it?
I'm wondering if the cause of the problem was backed up to the external but not the problem itself. Maybe the problem is triggered by start up / shut down but only then affects the next start up. I'm not sure this really makes sense of everything, though...
Can you examine the system logs while booted from the external, maybe? That is, use /Applications/Utilities/Console to open the internal's log files - especially /var/log/system.log and friends. I don't know this will do any good. Presumably, nothing is getting written here during the failed start ups but maybe there is something which would give a clue from the last successful start up and shut down.

  • Iphone 4 is connecting to my computer fine, but won't show up as a device in iTunes?

    Hey everyone~
So I just recently got a new iPhone 4 which I was totally stoked about; until I tried to connect it to iTunes.
I have a Windows 8  laptop, and whenever I plug the phone into the USB that's connected to the laptop, it shows as a connected device. It seems to work fine.
But iTunes doesn't even recognize that a device is connected. By this I mean that my phone won't appear in the devices tab next to the iTunes store tab in library.
I'm extremely frustrated after searching through article after article and seeing that nothing is helping. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes countless times, restarted both my laptop and device numerous times, and even tried to see if a firewall was preventing me from connecting but that wasn't the issue.
I've used my older iPhone 3gs PERFECTLY on this laptop before and had no problems, but I just really want music on this phone!
    Please help!
    Thanks.

    Well, I figured it out!
So I finally found out that by completely wiping out any apple software on my laptop, I tried downloading iTunes from FireFox instead of Chrome and it finally worked.
Hope this helps someone else with the same problem as me!

  • Airport used to work fine, but won't connect to internet now

Hello. I bought my Macbook pro about two weeks ago and never had problems with my internet connection. I moved last week to another city, and had my wi-fi installed today. My brother has a Powerbook G4 and it worked fine with the new connection, but my Mac won't; it won't connect automatically when I turn the computer on and when I click on "open network preferences", nothing happens. I already got connected by clicking on Network Diagnostic in Safari, but i'd like to do so without going through all that everytime I need to get on the internet.
Can anybody help me to fix this problem? I'd really appreciate that. Thanks in advance.

Tell us about your network. How are you connected to the internet? Cable modem, DSL?... Is there a router involved? Which one is it? System Preferences>Network>Show:Airport>TCP/IP are you getting an IP address?

  • Movies in iTunes works fine but won't play on Apple Tv

So I have a couple of movies that works fine in my iTunes and won't work when streamed in my Apple Tv (2gen)
The first just doesn't start and the second one have audio problems.
iTunes is on a Macbook Pro 15'' Late 2011 high end via my Time Capsule in my Apple Tv second generation
And again, the movies are playing just fine on my computer ...  it's when they are streamed that the problem happen. By the way it's not my connection, everything has been checked up on this side... And everything is up to date
    Anyone ? ... thanks

OOur internet service is not always fast enough to stream directly on Apple TV which is why we want to use AirPlay from the iPad to Apple TV.   When we try to play a movie it starts for one second and then crashes out.   This does not happen with every TV show - we watched 8 episodes of Season 4 with no problem, but it would not play episode 9 or episode 1 of season 5.

  • PPC Mini reads CDs fine but won't read DVDs

A friend is having this problem. I suspect it is electronic related as opposed to physical so I'm going to suggest she try creating a test account to rule out hardware. If that works, what would be the best next steps to take?

The drive is probably on its way out. CDs and DVDs may look the same, but they're very different. Assuming they even still stock parts for that model Mini, you're looking at over $200 to have it repaired. Just get a USB external drive, or FireWire if you want to be able to boot from it.

  • ITunes 10.5.2 installs fine, but won't open.  Gives locked disc/permissions error.  Any ideas?

I get the following error message when trying to open iTunes 10.5.2 for the first time:  "The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder."  I'm running windows 7 and have tried everything I can think of, including uninstall/reinstall, allowing all users full control, creating a new user account and everything on the support page for this problem (hidden file deletion, virus checks, opening in safe mode, etc.)  Never had a problem like this before.  Very frustrated and confused - please help if you can.  Thanks for looking.

    I have fixed the issue
    The steps I used were
    1. restore ATV under //settings/general/restore
    2. log out then in with apple id //setting/computers/turn off-on
    3. unplug router for 30 sec
    4. restart macbook with no windows being kept open
    5. when macbook restarts open iTunes
    6. log out then onto home sharing under advanced tab
    7. make sure sharing is enable under //iTunes/preferences/sharing/ then click share my library on local network
    8. it should work after this point and come up in ATV
///side note the sharing tab on iTunes won't show up in the sidebar of iTunes not certain if it's suppose to///

  • Airport Express wireless network works fine, but won't connect to Internet

I had a power outage and since then my Airport Express doesn't connect to the Internet although everything else seems to work. I can see the AE just fine in the Airport Utility. My computer connects to the wireless network provided via the AE, so does my iPhone, so does my wireless printer, and I can print wirelessly from the computer to the printer, so the AE's wireless networking is working. If I directly connect my computer to the ethernet connection that I use for the AE, it connects to the Internet, so I have wired connectivity to the Internet. But somehow, I can't get to the Internet using the wireless network of the AE. Any suggestions on what I should try next?

    Hi there,
Try to reset your Airport Express (AX), y pressing the little dot on the back of device. Keep pressed for some seconds until it flashes. Start then your Airport Utility and go through the setup process again. This will reset your whole wireless network. This may work for you. Good luck.

  • MP3 files play in WMP just fine, but won't appear in my iTunes music list

I just started using iTunes on an external hard drive, and after adding my music some albums & files won't appear in the music list. No matter what method I use to add them they still don't show up, and so I can't put them on my iPod or even play them through iTunes! I have seen several similar posts, and I can tell you that the tags are fine, and all the music was ripped from purchased CDs. So does anyone know why, and how I can get them to show up like they should?!

I posted the same issue earlier today, hopefully someone can help. As time goes on I'm starting to believe more and more this is a bad bug with the new iTunes.
