Boots into grub shell

Hello everyone
I am brand new to arch, and have just attempted my first netinstall. The installation seemed to run smoothly, and I followed along on the beginner installation guide. I finished the installation and rebooted, and this is where the problem comes in. I assume I must have made some kind of an error while installing grub, because the computer loads into a kind of grub shell, which looks like this...
GNU GRUB version 0.97 (638K lower / 980928k upper memory)
[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device / filename. ]
grub>
I'm not quite sure what I need to do from here. After a quick google I found http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB, and skimmed untill I got to something that looked relevant.
The following example is for systems with a separate /boot partition:
grub> find /grub/stage1
I let the installer auto partition my external hard drive, and I'm nearly positive it added a 100mb boot partition. I thought this might help locate some kind of a file that GRUB was missing for whatever reason, but the output of the above command is:
Error15: File not found
If someone could help me get the boot loader up and working that would be awesome! As a sidenote, I am (at least attempting) to dual boot windows and arch.
All help is appriciated

Ok, I wiped the windows install to make the installation easier, and am using only one hard drive (/dev/sda). I succesfully went through the installation and installed the boot loader. And for the first time when rebooting after the installation I recieved the boot selections screen, containing arch, and arch fall back. I happily chose arch, and it began running through the start up. After a point things stopped, and I examined the console on the screen finding:
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Pid 1, comm:kinit Not tainted 2.6.30-ARCH #1
This was followed by a 'call trace' containing some miscelaneous garble. I'm not sure what this means, what do I need to do to fox this? In case it help I belive the kernel line looked like this:
title Arch Linux (Main)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 vga=773
initrd /kernel26.img
I'm not sure if this is relevant or not, but I installed the bootloader to /dev/sda.
Thanks for any help!

  • GRUB boots to GRUB shell. [solved]

Don't know what else to tell you really, I don't know how to fix this problem, I've reinstalled GRUB like a million times but it still boots to the shell, which I can still boot from fine if I type in the 'root (hd0,1) / kernel /vmlinuz26 ' etcetc stuff but is just annoying. How should I go about fixing this? I've double checked the menu.lst for errors a lot and I can't see any.. help
    My setup is-
two hard drives, first one with XP / Vista, second with all Arch, with a boot, swap, and root partition
I installed grub to the MBR of the first drive because that's the one that my BIOS defaults to. Maybe that's the problem. idk

I had this exact same problem. Basically your menu.lst file is not in the right place.
Here is the forum topic that I started http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=49814
I also made a few corrections to the archwiki entry for grub so make sure you look there too.
You mention that you have a separate boot partition. Check in /boot and make sure that you don't have a /boot/boot directory. . . (that's what happened to me, check the above link).

    After googling and such.
I tried to use the grub command to boot it manually but couldn't get it work.
I noticed some files are missing in /boot folder.
( Not sure, but from the look of it it seemed
there is no such file initramfs-linux.img and vmlinuz-linux for me to run initrd or linux command in grub )
So I boot back into the CD and ran "pacstrap -i base base_devel" & "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" again.
    And the file is there!
    And I booted into Arch!
    cheers:)

  • [Workaround]installation cd boots into grub

    Hi,
just trying to install Arch on my notebook using the 2009.2 release on cd. It boots for a second then switches to a grub prompt. The cd boots fine on another computer, on the notebook both Gentoo's and Ubuntu's live cds boot normally. I get no error messages.
    Can anyone help?
The notebook is a Benq Joybook 5100 with 1GB ram and a 40GB hd. Boot order is set to "cd/dvd first".

No, you weren't unclear - it was my reading of the problem that was faulty
So, as we're the only two here a the moment, let's get as much info for those who will
    know what to do
Have you mdsum'd the download *and* the burn, just to make sure that isn't the problem ?
Only a very slight chance, I know - but if you can say definately that the burn is OK, that's
one less variable to worry about.
    Is the notebook a "brand-spanking-new-all-the-latest-hardware" one ?
Have you tried an older release of the installation CD ?
I'll shut-up now and let Those-In-The-Know take over

  • GRUB loads but get thrown into rescue shell without any errors

I forgot to read the news before I did an upgrade for the first time in a long time and borked my system because of the filesystem update.
Used to get Arch news by mail with a RSS forwarder, but the service I used shut down and I forgot to sign up for another one.
Used chroot and it seems like I fixed the filesystem and bash packages with all the related symlinks, and I did mkinitcpio -p linux and got no errors.
However when I boot I get directly thrown into GRUB rescue shell without any errors. Tried to reinstall GRUB but didn't change anything.
Read GRUB - GRUB UEFI drops to shell, but I still have a grub.cfg. I believe I just have a pretty standard GRUB2 installation, however I'm not really since it's a long time since I installed it and it was a lot of back and forth because I tried a lot of combinations of GPT/MBR and GRUB/Syslinux since my HP ProBook 6460b laptop has UEFI. If more information is needed about my current GRUB install please do ask, chroot is working just fine.
My system is updated and I'm using systemd.
What should I do to fix my boot/GRUB?
Also, I'm not sure if it's relevant, but when I try to run a Lubuntu LiveCD (same arch as my Arch install) it fallbacks to BusyBox with the error "unable to find a medium containing a live file system".
It's still a fully working TTY so I haven't bothered to research further why. Maybe just a corrupt usb memory drive (setup).

unilx wrote:You can manually create a grub.cfg file, the wiki has a detailed section on this, just Google: "arch linux manually creating grub.cfg"
This might be the fix, but I'm not sure what I did that could've changed it. Anyway, I'm tired of having to use time maintaning my system just for a simple update and switching to Debian testing. Learning alot playing around with Arch, but the last half year or so have just felt like a big hazzle with all the (in my opinion) unecessary changes and distancing from it's BSD-like roots and KISS (systemd and all that jazz).

  • [SOLVED] Boot into different OS one time using grub

I have a remote Arch Linux system, that I don't have physical access to too frequently. I wake this system up with WOL and then SSH in. By default, it boots into the first option on the grub menu, which is Arch. I don't want to change the default grub option, but I want to be able to change something while in Arch, reboot, have grub pick the second boot option, use the second OS (which could be any OS, not necessarily Arch), and then when I reboot again, grub would pick the default boot option.
    Is this possible?

  • Cannot boot into Windows

You have probably heardd this a thousand times, but...............
I have installed Solaris 10 on a hard drive with Windows XP Pro & Windows XP Pro 64 bit on other partitions.
Although the GRUB option to boot into Windows is there, chosing it results in the system hanging (ie black screen with just a flashing cursor).
Attempting a repair with XP 64 bit results in an error message to the effect that a "valid partition etc etc" does not exist.
Both the XP and XP 64bit paritions are still there and I can access everything on them from Windows on a second disk.
I therefore take it that the MBR has been changed.
So, you know the next silly question - how do I fix it so I can boot into my Windows XP Pro & Windows XP Pro 64 bit ?
    Mike

It is advisable to be a bit more conservative and to perform backup of MBR before starting installation in quite complex environment. Appropriate command may have the form:
    dd if=/dev/hda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1
    Restoring:
    dd if=mbr.bin of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1
Here hda is a plug-in, sda may be necessary on other hardware platform.
But at present the milk has been spilled, so this tip is for future use. At first You should check the contents of grub.conf file in Your Solaris boot catalog. I assume that You can start Solaris. Are the partitions with Windows correctly enumerated? Remember that grub numbering starts with 0 (zero). If all is OK, You can try (without any warranty) following grub reinstallation procedure:
    1) Boot from installation DVD and start single user shell.
    2) Next issue a command:
    /a/sbin/installgrub -m /a/boot/grub/stage1 /a/boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c0d1s0
    3) Check grub.conf contents - it should perform loading from the first disk. The value c0d1s0 depends on details of Your installation.
Additionaly I assume that You have installed Windows operating system on separate partition. All Windows data, i. e. Your user data are on another partition. In such a case You may try as a last resort reinstallation of Windows followed by new Solaris installation (+ previous MBR backup).
    Good luck!

  • [SOLVED]Ubuntu 11.10 broke grub2, can't boot into arch

Hi, I'm having a little issue with grub2 at the moment, I have Arch installed on seperate /home / and /boot partitions, I installed Ubuntu using the "alongside" option in the installer which has added an option to boot into Arch on the grub bootup screen. However when I boot up into arch I get the follow message:
Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/hda3
    [ numbers] usb 1=-4.2: device descriptor read/all, error -3
ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/hda3' .
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Then I am promptly dropped into a recovery shell.
My root device should be at /dev/sda5, not quite sure what's happened there.
Any ideas on how to get this fixed? I think ubuntu has /boot on it's own parition, along with the rest of /.

  • Cannot boot into Arch using Gummiboot and Intel fake RAID

This is my first time installing Arch Linux in a few years. The installation seemed to go fine, but I can't boot into it. At this point, when I try to boot into it this is my console output: http://pastie.org/9389435
First of all, what confuses me about this output are the RAID lines. My system currently has two RAID arrays: My RAID0 array where Windows 7 is installed and my RAID1 array where I'm attempting to install Arch Linux. My fstab nor Gummiboot entry files refer to the RAID0 array at all. Why does it activate the partitions on the RAID0 array but not the RAID1 array?
Second of all, lines 10, 11, 14, and 16 refer to /dev/sdd3. When I mount the partitions on my RAID array using the Arch live CD, I have to refer to them as either /dev/md/RAID1_0p1-4 or /dev/md124p1-4. The /dev/sda-sdd seem to refer to the individual drives. Why is it different when I try to boot into the system?
Here is my current fstab: http://sprunge.us/bQCT
The reason fstab is using labels is because the genfstab command generated an fstab that mounted the partitions on the RAID array with their /dev/md124p1-4 names. I noticed these names sometimes changed if I booted back into the live cd, so at one point I changed those names to the /dev/md/RAID1_0p1-4 names. Then in another attempt to fix the problem I'm currently having, I gave each of the partitions labels and I'm now referring to them by their labels in fstab. I also removed the commented UUID's since a few of them had changed since this fstab was generated. Everything to the right of the labels was kept from the original genfstab command.
Here is my gummiboot arch.conf entry file: http://sprunge.us/HPVb
I'm also referring to my root partition by label in this file, rather than the UUID which seems to be the norm. The reason for this is because I was previously getting an error saying that it couldn't even find the root partition based on that UUID. As you can see, I left the UUID line commented in case I have to use it again later.
Here is my mkinitcpio.conf file, which I'm thinking the problem has something to do with this since it's the part I understand the least: http://sprunge.us/IFDL
The modifications I made to this file were based on what I read in the fake raid article on the Arch wiki. All I did was make sure dm_mod and dm_mirror were added to the MODULES line and dmraid was added to the HOOKS line. At first I also had chipset_module_driver in MODULES, but it just generated warnings when I ran `mkinicpio -p linux` so I took it out. I don't know what that module would be for, since it only says "if necessary" on the wiki.
As for the emergency shell it puts me in when it fails to boot, there's not really much I can do from there. The filesystem it puts me in looks entirely different from the root filesystem I can mount from the live cd.
At this point, I'm stumped and I'm not sure where to go from here.

    x:5:respawn:/opt/kde/bin/kdm -nodaemon
This is the line that's causing it.  It's probably not because of this line, but because kdm isn't starting properly (possibly erroring) and being re-run because of the respawn option.
Try booting into single user mode, changing the default run level to 3, and debugging it from there (figure out why kdm doesn't want to start right).

  • [SOLVED] Unable to dual boot into Windows 8

I have an Acer Aspire S3 laptop which came with Windows 8 installed. After following the Beginner's Guide to install Arch alongside Windows, Linux works but Windows fails to boot. When I select Windows from the GRUB menu I get kicked out to rescue mode with a "file not found" error. This is a UEFI-GPT setup and in GRUB rescue I get an "unknown filesystem" error when I try to ls the ESP. In fact I get that error for everything except the two ext4 partitions I created during the Arch install.
I'll just briefly run down (what I think are) the relevant parts of the installation process, then post the output of Boot Info Script at the end.
    Partitions
I created three partitions during the installation:
    Swap (/dev/sda6)
    Root (/dev/sda7)
    Home (/dev/sda8)
The disk already had an EFI System Partition (/dev/sda2) so I used that instead of creating my own, mounting it to /boot as described in the beginner's guide (not /boot/efi as in the GRUB docs - not sure if that makes a difference).
    Boot Loader
I installed and configured GRUB exactly as described in the beginner's guide:
    # pacman -S grub efibootmgr os-prober
    # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
This appeared to work. Os-prober found my Windows OS ("Found Windows Boot Manager on /dev/sda2@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi") and added a corresponding menuentry to grub.cfg. On discovering that this didn't actually boot, I added a custom Windows entry per the GRUB dual-boot instructions. That didn't work either.
    Boot Info
Here is the output from boot info script which includes my grub config, partition info, fstab etc. One strange thing is that the script found every boot file on the ESP except the Windows Boot Manager, including leftover files from short-lived installations of Elementary OS and gummiboot. Maybe Windows is the "Unknown BootLoader" mentioned at the end.

I tried tackling this myself and ended up not being able to boot into Linux either. I had to go back to the USB install stick and redo a lot of the installation. I thought I'd better ask for some advice before diving in again. Let me know if you need any more info or log/config files.

As mentioned earlier, Fast Startup is off. I disabled it before installing Linux. dosfsck looks clean.
    $ sudo umount /dev/sda2
    $ sudo dosfsck -w -r -l -a -v -t /dev/sda2

I'm not sure it does. This is the only mention of efi files I can find in the script.

Looking for "${mountname}"/efi/*/*.efi will only pick up files one level down from, say, /boot/EFI. Files in /boot/EFI/Microsoft/Boot are two levels down. I copied bootx64.efi into /boot/EFI/Microsoft and the script picked it up. This is with the latest version of bootinfoscript afaik.

  • [Solved] Can't boot into Arch after deleting some partitons

About 6 months ago I installed Arch on a machine that used to run Ubuntu. Had some trouble at the time getting to boot into Arch but somehow managed. Now eventually decided to delete the old Ubuntu partitons to free up some space using gparted. Arch partition number changed from sda12 to sda6.
On rebooting after deleting ubuntu partitions with gparted, I got an ubuntu splash screen and a whole lot of ubuntu boot options. Somehow these were all contained in my Arch's /boot/grub/menu.lst. Arch is all on one partition and no separate boot partition (which I had with Ubuntu - maybe I haven't deleted that and this is the problem?). Will need to check that out.
I can chroot into Arch and did the following -
    grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
    (hd0,5)
    grub> root (hd0,5)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
    grub> setup (hd0)
    Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
    Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
    Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 16 sectors are embedded.
    succeeded
    Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+16 p (hd0,5)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.lst"... succeed
    ed
    Done.
    grub>
The Arch /boot/grub/menu.lst had a whole lot of ubuntu stuff in it but I edited to the following -
    # menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
    # grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
    # grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub
    # and /usr/share/doc/grub-doc/.

I need to post this now and come back from a different machine to note the error messages I am now getting on boot. ...
Note that when I boot and press esc to get the menu I get the menu.lst I created (in the second quote) above in /dev/sda6, ie the one with the Arch hd and uuid entries - so grub is looking there and finding that menu.lst, but something goes wrong after that.
OK. Have now booted the machine and after pressing esc and selecting the uuid entry (the same thing happens with the hd entry) I get a whole lot of stuff, but what seems relevant is (typing it out) -
    List of all partitions:
No filesystem could mount root, tried:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.39-Arch #1
If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. This is my MythTV machine so the WAF is about to take a big dive!
If I could just install grub to the MBR as if this was a new installation of Arch that would be great.
I am really lost as to what is going on, which I'm sure is evident.
    Thanks a lot

    Hi. Unfortunately that didn't help.
So next, based on this post https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … el_version I chrooted into Arch and (a) rolled back and (b) reinstalled my kernel but that didn't help either. I suspected it wouldn't because the kernel was working fine before I deleted the partitions in question.

I then did a pacman -Suy and the linux package has now replaced kernel26. ( See this wiki entry http://www.archlinux.org/news/changes-t … filenames/). I didn't change anything in menu.lst owing to this and it seems there is no need to. Unfortunately this hasn't helped either - still getting the kernel panic.

I don't think I've mentioned that my old menu.lst seems to have disappeared and so must have been on one of the partitions that were deleted. I did have 2 Arch installations when I was setting things up months ago and that menu.lst may have been on the other partition but pointing to this partiton's kernel for booting. Presumably that's possible since this partiton is definitely the one I have been using for the last several months (confirmed by log and other files updated in the last few days etc). Even so, I suppose that probably wouldn't be relevant to this issue, since grub is finding the menu.lst on this partition when it boots so it is looking in the intended place now.
It seems I'm at a bit of a dead end. It seems these kernel panics are usually because there is something wrong with the kernel - which there wasn't with mine (and presumably the kernel in the new linux package is fine) or there is a typo in menu.lst (I can't see one and nobody has pointed one out yet) or menu.lst is pointing to the wrong partition (mine is pointing to the same partition and /boot directory that is found by grub - which is where my boot image is located - so it seems to be correct). I have nevertheless tried editing the menu.lst entry when booting to boot from different partitions but so far that hasn't worked either.
If anybody has other ideas I'd really appreciate it.
If not, some suggestions on re-installing would also be appreciated. I have a recent tar archive of the partition, but presumably reinstalling that wouldn't be of much use since it would just put back what is currently there. I guess that I need to format the partition, create a separate boot partition, do a fresh install of Arch into the formatted partition (and with boot in the new boot partition). And then restore my tar backup (excluding the boot directory) into the formatted partition?
    Any assistance greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Can I ssh to a Mac that's booted into Safe Mode?

I'm needing to ssh to a Mac that's been booted into Safe Mode (I'm already able to ssh to it in normal boot mode, and I know how to boot it into Safe Mode from the command line, i.e. sudo nvram boot-args="-x", then sudo reboot).
I can't just test this for myself, as it has to work first time, otherwise I'll be locked out of the remote Mac. If ssh would still work in Safe Mode, the plan is to then ssh to it and issue the command to set it back to normal boot mode (with sudo nvram boot-args="") and then reboot... job done.
Ideally, but not too important, I could VNC to it in Safe Mode instead, but ssh would do fine.
Does anyone know (for sure!) please?
In case anyone wondered, I'm wanting to do the Safe Boot because I'm told it can cure an issue with Adobe CS apps freaking out and locking up, crashing etc. I want to try this over the w/e, and have no physical access to the Mac. I've already set it to power on later (via pmset) - something I do routinely.
I thought an answer to this would be easy to find, but after Googling I've drawn a blank. Can't find it in any Apple docs either.
    Thanks in advance!

If this was already covered somewhere else, I
apologize. I did some browsing for this topic but had
    no luck finding anything...
Anyhoo, I'm trying to log in to my wife's B&W G3
(running Jaguar) from my G4 (running 10.4.2) using
secure shell but she doesn't have a password set up
on her computer. When I enter the ssh command in
Terminal, it asks for a password — I don't enter
anything and just hit the Return key. It returns with
a massage saying "Permission denied, please try
again." What can I do to log in w/o setting up her
    machine with a password first?
If you want to use SSH securily I would suggest you disable password authenticaiton altogher. If you setup public key authentication it is more secure and better than using passwords anyway.

  • Creating a "Boot into Windows" button/shortcut

Does anyone know if there is a way i can create a "boot into windows" button for linux.  I would like to put it on my linux desktop, so when i need to boot into windows, i can shutdown arch and boot right into windows, without having to go through grub and all that stuff.  I have read something about qemu, but dont really know if that will work.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    _Gandalf_ wrote:
    I hope you are using ext3 ...
IMHO if you are using ext3 your problem is solved, create 2 menu.list one called menu.list.linux and the other menu.list.windows, put the default entry to the desired one and take the delay down to 0 along with hidemenu command ( boot into selected distribution instantly.. )
On linux create the following script
    #!/bin/sh
    cp /boot/grub/menu.list.windows /boot/grub/menu.list
    [[ -f /boot/grub/menu.list ]] || exit 1
    shutdown -r now
Now go to windows, install Ext2 FS ( http://www.fs-driver.org/ ) mount the boot partition and create a bat script
    copy E:bootgrubmenu.list.linux E:bootgrubmenu.list
i dont remember if u can reboot from a bat script but that will do the trick...
P.S: yea i know, it would be better to use one script and use sed/awk to patch it, but how will he patch it on windows ? personaly i don't know how  so I took the idea of 2 menu.list(s)
I am using EXT3 and i already have the Ext2fs installed, so i think those 2 scripts should do the trick!

  • [SOLVED] Unable to boot into fresh install (UEFI, gummiboot)

    Hello to you all,
I installed arch linux on my new Lenovo E130 following Beginner's guide. After install, when I rebooted the system I'm dropped into emergency shell. Whole log:
    :: running early hook [udev]
    :: running hook [udev]
    :: Triggering uevents...
    :: performing fsck on '/dev/sda1'
    fsck: fsck.vfat: not found

    ERROR: fsck failed on '/dev/sda1'
:: mounting '/dev/sda1' on real root
    mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'
You are now being dropped into an emergency shell.
/dev/sda1 is my UEFI partition in fat32 filesystem, mounted to /boot in fstab. Also it's wierd that fsck is trying to run on this partition as it's entery in fstab is
    /dev/sda1 /boot vfat defaults 0 0
so no fsck is expected? Also I tried linux-lts kernel and installing dostools and than mkinitcpio to renew all the hooks, the error is still the same.
    Thanks for all your help.

    /dev/sda2 none swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/sda3 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
I really don't know why is it forcing fsck on partition with pass=0 in fstab?

  • [SOLVED]Unable to boot into the kernel I compiled, kernel panic

I try to compile a kernel myself and boot into it, and I use virtualbox to test it. (arch guest inside my arch host)  I first copy /proc/config.gz of my guest system to the linux source code directory, rename it to .config, and just compile it. After that I copy the image under arch/x86/bzImage to /boot directory, then I follow the instruction given by the arch wiki to create an entry in grub. Here is my /etc/grub.d/40-custom:
    #!/bin/sh
    exec tail -n +3 $0
    menuentry 'Custom Entry' {
    set root=(hd0,msdos1)
    echo 'Loading Modified Linux'
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-modified
    echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
    initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img
    following is this command:
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
But after reboot I cannot boot into the new kernel, it shows "unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0):
https://img.vim-cn.com/e5/5227d8d4cc07c … ce81ee.png (choose "Advanced Option for Archlinux-> With Linux Modified")
https://img.vim-cn.com/a9/12869edfbbca1 … 649380.png (choose "Custom Entry" on the first page directly)
I have searched for a while but didn't find a solution. Is there anything I'm doing wrong, please?

I am referring to /proc/config.gz -- this is a gzip archive and needs to be decompressed before you can use it to compile your kernel image.
This isn't strictly true, it just makes the process easier because you're starting with a sane .config (assuming you're booted into one of Arch's official kernels at least). You can start from scratch, but you need to know what you're doing.
Frefreak wrote:Ok, I'll rebuild everything from the beginning later.
No need to rebuild everything, just generate an initramfs for the custom kernel. The initramfs contains modules that are specific to a the kernel image that they were generated for; this is probably why /boot/initramfs-linux.img isn't working for you.
