Boots up with almost all memory "wired"

Every other time I boot up my Mac, it doesn't auto-start the programs I have set and it has five of my eight gigabytes of RAM wired. If I used Resume when I shut down, when I restart it to get the normal five hundred megabytes of RAM wired all of my saved program statuses are lost. To be safe, I always uncheck the Resume function. But it still happens and it is very annoying.

The most recent release of Safari (5.1.7) for OS X 10.6.8 seems to keep more free RAM available (and thus offers a bit better performance with fewer beachballs) than Safari 5.0.5, the version I used extensively before recently updating to OS X 10.6.8 to get the anti-Flashback security updates. >>>
I'm actually using OS 10.6.7 (not 10.6.3).  I'll update to 10.6.8 now that you've made me aware of it (thanks), but I don't see why that will make any difference regarding this particular problem.
I'll also update Safari (I'm back a few revisions on that one), but there too, I don't expect any pleasant surprises.  (I don't recall ever seeing a performance improvement from an update.)
My inquiry was primarily directed at the use of the Firefox browser.  However, when I've switched (in frustration) to Safari, I've seen negligible difference in performance, or regarding the particular issues I've posted about.
Even you characterized the performance gain as "a bit better."  This problem cries out for much more than "a bit."

I am using MacBook with 4GB RAM and 500GB hard disc, 2.26GHz CPU, Mountain Lion OS. The machine has become so slow it hamperes lots of work as with almost all the application it beclome unresponsive and hang like.
Also disc permission changes over the period of time and need to clean it. After clean it, it improves a bit but the Mail function which is ridiculously slow. Address book never function to remove duplicate.
Kindly ifnorm the solution if anybody have.

If you do a safe boot, holding the shift key down while booting, do you have the performance issues? If not, check your login items as well as any software listed at the bottom of the System Preferences pane. A software incompatibility could cause performance issues. Note a safe start will take longer than a normal start.

  • Web browser leakage uses up almost all memory

I consistently find that when using Safari (or Firefox), within a short period of time (sometimes even less than one hour), the browser has taken over nearly all available memory. This happens even when the browser is the only program in use, and when no webpages with extensive audio or video content are open.
Can someone explain to me why this happens -- i.e., why web browsers seem to hog all the memory they can find -- and (more importantly) whether I can take steps to prevent it from happening?
    Thanks.
As an example, my current System Memory readings (from Activity Monitor), with only 'Firefox' and 'Activity Monitor' open, are:
Free memory . . . 74.9 MB (but frequently dropping to less than 10 MB)
    Wired . . . 228.4 MB
    Active . . . 1.20 GB
    Inactive . . . 504.5 MB
    Used . . . 1.92 GB
    VM size . . . 31.99 GB
    Page ins . . . 292.1 MB
    Page outs . . . 120.6 MB
    Swap used . . . 518.7 MB

  • Firefox constantly crashes even with almost all extentions disabled.

For months now Firefox has been crashing regularly. This seems to happen most when I am on pages like Google Images or Google Maps. Each time this happens I get the screen to restart Firefox and submit a crash report. After that process the "this is embarrassing" screen comes up but the tabs listed are old, sometimes by several days. I have disabled nearly every extension / plug-in. I am tired of having to babysit this program. It is a browser and I am just trying to browse the internet. I am not a user with a ton of extensions or other add-ins to Firefox. I use it almost "out of the box". I have had to reset Firefox in the past and I have had times where I have lost all of my open tabs. I am just about to the point of dumping Firefox for a browser which actually works. Firefox has become a very frustrating program to use. It is a browser. The user should not have to bend over backwards to keep it working.
I use Windows Vista Ultimate. I am submitting this from a different computer since Firefox just opens for a minute then crashes over and over and over again.

We need to see your crash reports from your other computer where Firefox is having the issue.
I don't know what OS the other computer is running but I'll put instructions for both Mac and Windows.
    <b>Windows</b>
Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
    <b>Mac</b>
#'''(OS X 10.6 or previous)''' Click the '''Finder''' icon in the dock. Your home folder will be selected. In the right side of the window, click the Library folder to open it. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.<br>'''(OS X 10.7 or above)''' Click the '''Finder''' icon in the dock. On the menu bar, click the '''Go''' menu, hold down the '''option''' or '''alt''' key and select '''Library'''. A window will open containing your Library folder. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.
#Open the 5 most recent files with a text editor and copy the IDs.

  • Mac mini not booting up with 8GB memory after 10.7.2 update

My mac mini is not booting up with 8GB of memory after the 10.7.2 update. It just keeps on beeping and flashing the led.
If I take out the upper DIMM (Bank 1) It boots just fine, and it does so with either one of the 4GB DIMMs in Bank 0, so the DIMMs are fine. It also boots up fine with two 1GB DIMMs installed simultaneously, so the Bank 1 seems to be somehow working as well.
This trouble started right after the Lion recovery update, meaning the mini has never booted with the full 8GB installed after the update.
It worked just fine before that, with the full 8GB of memory installed.
    Anyone else having similar problems?
    Cheers, Otto.

I have upgraded my 2011 Macbook Pro and my 2011 Mini Server
to 8 gig with Corsair RAM and have had no issues
(CMSA8GX3M2A1333C9).  What brand RAM was used?
There have been issues in the past with some RAM
    brands.
Something to try is a PRAM reset with the 8 gig installed.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh26871.html
Also, make sure the Minis are booting into 64 bit mode.
    Open Applications->Utilities->System Information
On the left side click the software heading.  There should be a line
      64-bit Kernel and Extensions:          Yes
This should be the default for 2010 and 2011, but something could
    have got hosed.

  • API to compute total RAM memory wired-down by all processes?

Hi. We have a time-critical application that wires-down large memory blocks with mlock() and munlock(). We are concerned that, if other applications are running that are also wiring-down memory, we may inadvertently wire-down all the RAM in the computer, and the computer will hang (this has happened a couple of times).
The solution we would like to adopt is: we compute the total memory wired-down on the computer, by all processes, so we can know whether or not we can wire-down. In other words, we want to, in software, compute the same figure that the Activity Monitor shows in its memory-usage pie chart.
Question: Can anyone point us at an API to compute the total of all wired down memory, from all processes? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the ideas. What I learned after pursuing the above suggestions, is:
    1) sysctl() does not return the amount of Wired-down memory, or if it does, it is just one process
    2) "top" shell command does output the Wired-down memory count of all processes. The "top" value is identical to the Activity Monitor value. Unfortunately, there is no API for "top".
    3) There is a lower-level mach function host_statistics() (analagous to sysctl?) which will return VM stats: use HOSTVMINFO type (outputs structure vmstatistics_datat) which does include wired-down memory. However, the output value for wired-down memory is not the total of all processes (it is significantly smaller than the wired-down figure from "top" or Activity Monitor). Strangely, the "total active" and "total inactive" values from host_statistics() do reflect all processes. The mystery is: why does host_statistics() under-report the wired value (e.g. it says 400 MB when "top" shows 700 MB).
In summary: host_statistics() is tantalizingly close to what I need, but does not output the correct value. "top" is more accurate, but slow and there is no API.

  • Almost all of the same problems with Thunderbolt HTC

I have experienced most of the same problems with my phone as the ones indicated on this website.  I have been to the Verizon Store on three separate occasions seeking help, with  almost no solution, I guess not the one I was looking for, however now reconnected.   .
I have to give a shout-out to Tim in the Verizon Wareham, MA store, who has displayed  incredible  patience and took the time to hopefully  fix the phone and then explain my options.   The final result was to get a replacement and ship out the defective phone,
It is  employees such as Tim who make  Verizon a world class communication company.
Very disappointed with Verizon these days, poor quality cell service and poor quality cell products in exchange for huge profits.

I have also had the same problems that people are posting.  I also have had several phone calls to Customer Service with no luck.  I stopped in a store in Phoenix when I was traveling last week and I was told I should try to resetting my phone to factory settings. I was told that as long as I log back into my Gmail account that all of the apps I downloaded previously would be available to me. So I took the plunge and reset my phone.  Yes it is working great. I was surprised to find some of my downloaded music that had mysteriously disappeared suddenly reappeared.  The bummer, I can't seem to figure out how I can access the apps I previously downloaded. I only care about the ones I paid for.

  • HT1338 why is my MacBook Air running slow and I bought the 11 inch with all memory and turbo boost

why is my MacBook Air running slow and I bought the 11 inch with all memory and turbo boost

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

After downloading almost all of it, I get an error that there is no enough space. Why doesn't the store check to see if I have enough free space before proceeeding with the order?
How do I get a refund?

Well, with apps genneraly you do get told ahead of time. I'm not sure of the current algorithm with movies though.
Why not just clear up some space? You can check your usage in your settings btw.

Wow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum.  Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is.  Apple is not here.  It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off.

Good luck finding the solution. I have another posting https://discussions.apple.com/message/25145839#25145839 on this exact same issue, and that is after looking on my own for the solution on the web and on Apple's forum without any luck for a real solution. Having to RESET a device every time I need to clear out old messages from memory sounds to me like an intended pain from Apple to keep pushing iPhone users to purchase additional iCloud backup plans.

  • HT1420 I have used all or almost all of my 5 authorized computers with my iTunes account. Several are for old computers. Is the best thing to do to deactivate all and start over? Is do not have these old computers anymore. Thanks!

I have used all or almost all of my 5 devices under my I'd on iTunes. Several are on old computers no longer in my possession. Should I simply deactivate all devices and start over? I just want to make sure this does not invite unanticipated issues. Thanks,

Yeah, if you're up to five authorisations I'd deauthorise all and then reauthorise the ones you still have access to.

  • Almost all my applications just stopped working

    Hey all,
This morning my computer was running just fine. I have a 10.8.5 Mac OS X with 16GB of memory. I closed it, took it to an office location that I've been to many times before with no issues, and connected it to the linksys wifi network before realizing that there was an actual network I could use. None of my webpages in Safari(don't laugh at me!) would load, and no one else in the office had any trouble with their wifi. I noticed that I could not connect to Skype either. I've had a history of my Skype being completely dysfunctional, so I wasn't surprised, but I *was* a little worried when I switched into my other account, restarted the computer, and quit all other applications and still could not access any webpages in Safari.
At this point my other applications had started failing too. iTunes took forever to launch, and everything else I tried to open would stop responding and have to be force quit and restarted to get any response--if I was lucky. iPhoto and iMessage didn't respond, and Preview wouldn't have anything to do with me either. The Activity Monitor didn't even register most of my applications as being open, and would randomly spike to one thing(such as esets-daemon) using 150% of my CPU. I also had this little thing called Flux that would tint my screen orange at night, and it disappeared completely from the toolbar and won't open.
Basically, my entire system just simultaneously decided to give me the finger. Any help is appreciated. Firefox seems to be working fine but nothing from Safari still.
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • [nForce] Help with another booting problem with the MSI K7N2

Ok, I've been reading the threads and tried almost all of the solutions to no avail. Here is the issue...
While adjusting speed in bios, Upon reboot the system would not display video. Steps taken to solve:
*Betwwen all changes I unpluged all power from system
    1. Cleared CMOS VIA Jumper, Turned system on, no change
    2. set J10 Jumper to default then restarted, Still no video.
    3. Checked & reseated memory & CPU. Still nothing.
    4. Removed battery for about 30 seconds (Am going to try to remove it for 30 mins when i get a chance tomorrow) still nothing
At this point i assum the motherboard was bad. I tested botting up with no memory in an attempt to get the warming/error beeps but nothing the system just idles.
Am i missing something?  Any help suggestions or links to solutions would be greatly appretiated.

Sorry, I wasn;t trying to be vague, Was messing with the comp for a couple hours and got fed up. You were right, it was the k7n2. It's not mine it's a friends and wasn't around so i was going by memory. It had been running descent but was never properly installed (software) and was poorly cooled (hardware) so it had overheating restart issues. This is where I come in. I told my friend i would take a look at his computer. It was home built by one of his friends. Te system is fairly basic and the only plug in card used is a agp video card. The computer was working great after i reinstalled the CPU with proper thermal conducting when in BIOS his Athlon 2.6 was set for 1.8 I adjusted it up to the proper setting and he asked if i could bump it further. I attempted but it was unsuccessful and didn't boot. I cleared cmos with the jumper and it booted up again no problem. I stupidly went back in a fiddled around some more with something i shouldn't have because i don't remeber what it was. I belive it was the FSB Speed, but i'm not positive what change cause this particular shutdown. I'm no computer technichian, just a hobbiest. I cleared the Jumper again but this time it dodn't come back and boot. I then looked in the book and found out about jumper 10 (i think) for the SAFE MODE 100mhz boot. I set it as well with no response. I then disconnected the power cable from the PSU and unluged the battery for about half a min or so. cleared teh cmos jumper again, kept the safe mode jumper in safe mode and tried to reboot. It still just hangs. No screen, so Bios check or wrning beeps. It just idles. It revs the hard drive up for about 20sec or so but that is it. I'm going to try the suggestion earlier in the eact oprder giving by osnavi for the reseting cmos. I tried those steps in vvaroius orders 5 or 6 times before giving up.
Any help is appretiated. Thanks for your responses.
