Bootstrapper Crash Need to Backup FileVault Home Folder Before Rebuilding

Bottom Line (yes repeated at the bottom ;-))
How do I mount the sparse bundle (FileVault created) from the limited resources available on the OS X install DVD so I can check the integrity of contents, or even just copy the contents unencrypted?
I may just take this into the Genius bar, assuming the correct Evil Genius is available, but if I can get help here it will save me the drive across town.
Background:
Power fault and a hard shutdown, now my iMac won't boot.
Backup of Home folder is about 3 months old using Backup utility (no lectures please, long story)
I would like to backup what I have before doing anything dramatic (like erasing the drive and starting over)
I am using FileVault, which I suspect will complicate things (albeit the backup I do have is unencrypted and in the safe) and was able to copy most (but not all) of the sparse bundle.
I.e., I believe both the system files and my home folder have issues.
I would be satisfied with even an unencrypted copy of the files in the home folder (FileVault sparse bundle), but I am having trouble backing anything up (I/O error, which may mean that a band inside the sparse bundle is corrupted as well).
Possibly Relevant Details:
Single User Mode (i.e., via Command-S) does not reach prompt
Instead I see several "disk0s2: I/O error." with the error details followed by "The system bootstrapper has crashed"
It does point to the specific file issues, but at this point I am less concerned with the system files than I am with the Users home folders (mine and the kids)
Using the OS X DVD and launching Disk Utility the repair disk does not work (even when repeated, which has worked on other disks before).
Invalid sibling link on Verify followed by Invalid node structure (fails trying to rebuilding the catalog b-tree... invalid node structure and invalid record count repeated several times followed by invalid key length, then repair gives up.
Disk Utility unmounts the volume and won't let it re-mount.
Managed to re-mount by forcing the drive to be the start-up disk (Power On with Option key) and then re-started again from the DVD.
Could not figure out how to force the mount from the Terminal.
Again, running from the DVD and then using Terminal I can see the volume (../../../Volumes/Macintosh\ HD) and what appears to be the contents.
On a whim I tried to copy the Users folder to an external drive and then saw the error message about the FileVaulted sparse bundle (file .mtkessel in Users)
Copying the kids home folders this way worked, so the only problem appears to be my home folder (which is a sparse bundle).
Specifically, the "I/O Error" reported by cp is in .mtkessel/mtkessel.sparsebundle/bands/1 and 10... all of the other bands and the related Info and token objects copy just fine. I suppose it is possible that those bands are ones slated for reclamation at the next logout, but I can't be sure.
So I suppose the question is how do I mount the sparse bundle (FileVault created) from the limited resources available on the OS X install DVD so I can check the integrity of contents, or even just copy the contents unencrypted?
Thanks in advance on this ugly problem...
mk

It took many hours to copy the FileVault sparsebundle (both size and device issues I suppose), but I managed to re-assemble it, including the "Rescued Items"; I just used the unix cp -R on the sparsebundle file to force the copy to report the I/O errors... about a dozen or so of the 9000+ bands are damaged.
Could not really tell if anything other than the "Rescued Items" were missing since bands can be deleted during normal use.
I then attached the sparsebundle (which is encrypted) with a shadow (i.e., this sparsebundle is not mountable)
This is the command I used from the directory containing the COPY of the sparsebundle.
hdiutil attach -encryption -noverify -ignorebadchecksums -nomount mtkessel.sparsebundle -shadow bundle.shadow
I am not entirely sure, but the shadow option allows read-only behaviors on the device to be circumvented by allowing write through the shadow...
Enter the password and then I had he "device" appeared in the dropdown menu in DW and then I was able to re-build it.
Then in Preview I was able to see a fully mounted device from which I have started copying. The damage was "easily corrected" according to DW. It may take several hours to copy as well (this time probably due to the decryption as it copies)
I am starting to experiment with the Mail import features to see if I can recover the e-mails... my first attempts of importing from both Apple mailboxes as well as mbox format did not work. And, simply copying the emlx files into the mbox destinations does not work... The items simply don't show up in Mail... I am sure I will figure it out eventually, but  any advice on importing the emlx files would be much appreciated!

  • Do I need to add my 'Home Folder' to options in the Time Machine?

I dont want to have my 'Home Folder' to be a unencrypted back up.
I know that Time Machine back up my encrypted sparseimage 'Home Folder' when I log out. FileVault is on.
But when I am log in, do I need to add my 'Home Folder' into the options button of Time Machine preferences. So that Time Machine does not back up my Home folder unencrypted?
This is what I have done, is this right or wrong? Time Machine is backing up my 'Home Folder' when I log out.

I bought my a new white macbook about couple of weeks ago & a Seagate ITb external HD using 400 Firewire cable.
I partition the macbook into 5 volumes. I turn on FileVault, then a day later turn on Time Machine. It seems to be working fine until I decided that I wanted 6 partition instead of 5. So, I partition my macbook into 6 volumes & use Time Machine to restore all my data.
Time Machine did restore everything, but when it finish & restarted, it stalled & I had to turn the macbook off, then on. I though everything was fine, then just after I posted my question above, time machine fail to back up, some error message stating it fail to link?
So I deceided to start from the beginning. I erased the external HD. Deleted the “com.apple.TimeMachine.plist” file from Preference folder. Restarted the macbook, open Time Machine, look inside the exclusion list & I notice that Time Machine put all external volumes into the exclusion list automaticlly including my FileVault 'Home Folder'. So I took out my 'Home Folder' from the list. Then back everything up. This seem to work, until I log out. I notice that Time Machine was not backing up my 'Home Folder' then I got that error message stating it fail to link?
Then I decided to turn off FileVault, then turn it on again. Deleted the “com.apple.TimeMachine.plist” file. Restarted the macbook, open Time Machine, delete my 'Home Folder' from the exclusion list. Then got Time Machine to do a back up. Log out & Time Machine was backing up my 'Home Folder'. Everything is working, so far!

I need to change the home folder name. I just bought this mac today and my cousin put his name in because he had to back up his phone while we were still at the store so he could get a new phone and now my brand new imac says his name in the home folder. This is very frustrating. I would not have let him put his name in there if I didn't think you could change it. Someone please help!

Delete his user account and create your own, using your name.

  • I'd like to backup my HOME folder...

I'd like to backup my HOME folder...to DVDS. My Home folder is 17Gb. I'd like to back them up to DVDS. SuperDuper doesnt seem to do that.
Is there a free app that does this?
No time machine in Tiger, my iBook G3 cant take Leopard.
    Thanks

Sure. For DVD backup use Roxio's Toast. I've also mentioned Apple Backup - it's "free" but you must get a MobileMe account to get and use it. EMC's Retrospect is a heavy-weight backup utility that will backup across any removable media - tape, discs, hard drives, etc. I believe Tri-Edre Backup will backup across multiple media. ArchiveMac can split large archives into smaller ones that can be burned to multiple DVDs, FGDataBackup will span across multiple DVDs, etc.
I do not use any of the above software in this way so I cannot attest to which is best. I can only suggest you look at these and others you may find after searching at the site links I provided.

  • On 10.4.11 Mac Mail I get this: Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unnedded documents or move documents to another volume. I can't open mail.

On 10.4.11 iMac Mac Mail I get this message: "Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume." I can't open mail to do this. I have reinstalled software but no effect. How do I get into Mail to delete?

Found this on the "more like this" Worked like a charm!
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import mailboxes. Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported and available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old Envelope Index file from the Desktop and this should resolve the problem.

  • Unable to write to Filevault home folder

I am logged in under my user account with Administrator privileges. However, I am not able to write to the Home folder of my account. I have Filevault enabled, and notice there is a little padlock on the filevaulted-icon of my Home folder. Doing a Get Info shows me that the folder is indeed Locked (via check box), but it is a greyed-out box, so I have no access to it.
Any suggestions on how to even attempt getting this resolved? Because I cannot write, it is affecting my back-up program, Mail prefs won't open and other little annoying things. I would have done an erase and reinstall long ago, but since my laptop can't properly back-up, I am nervous about losing everything.
    help!

I'm having the same issue here.
Looks like it is allowed to create sub directories on VHD from LOW INTEGRITY processes, but not for files. It's as if FILE_ADD_SUBDIRECTORY is set, but FILE_ADD_FILE/FILE_WRITE_DATA is missing. ACL including Integrity level on filesystem is set to Full
Control and LOW like Kat says here.
Kat, do you have any progress on this? Anyone?

  • Time machine will not backup my home folder

I am having problems with time machine backing up my home folder. There is nothing in the TM exclusion option except (time machine backup) which is understandable. Even if I wanted to exclude it from backups it does not give me the option like its not recognized. Could this be a problem because my home folder is encrypted? I have talked to someone at the apple store about the issue and they where unable to help.

Yes, it's because it's encrypted. Time Machine does not backup a File Vault protected Home folder as it would an unencrypted one. The File Vault disk image is only backed up after you log out. If you never log out then it will not be backed up.
If you want a "normal" backup of your Home folder you will have to turn off File Vault.

  • I need to backup my hard drive before sending it for repair, How?

My macbook will not turn on but my hard drive is still in good condition.
When I went to the genius bar the employee said something about a hard drive kit I could use to backup my files and such before sending it in.
I own an external hard drive, how can I transfer my files from my macbook's hard drive into my external hard drive before sending the computer in for repair?

    Hi...use Carbon Copy Cloner....

  • 10.5.6 Update Breaks Time Machine backup of FileVault home folders?

Time machine used to backup FileVault home folders when I logged out. After 10.5.6, it just logs out and does not do the backup.
    Anyone else?
    s

This is a copy of a post that I have here somewhere...
"Personally I think apple is up to something...."
My set up was almost since Leopard was out.. Airport Extreme, USB drive connected to it.. 3 profiles on a macbook mid 07, 4 g's ram.. TM would back up will I was logged in every hour or so.. and whenever I logged out it would back up my home folder since I had file vault enabled.. never had a mayor problem.. updated to 10.5.6 about a day after it was out.. TM still backed up while I was logged in but it stopped backing up my home folder that had file vault enabled.. I decided to try a clean back up with another USB drive that I had used for the same purpose and it would not even recognize the format of the drive.. Any ways.. today I got a brand new 500 g's time capsule.. guess what... same thing.. it wont back up my home folder.. I've been with support on the phone since the beginning of the problem spoke to 4 different people 2 different levels, finally one level higher (3rd) the guy told me he couldn't help me because the set up i had was not supported by apple.. today I got to that 3rd level and the guy had no idea.. he even or actually most of them sounded surprise when i told them that i was expecting TM to back up when i was logged off.. .. well he is supposedly going to fwd my issue to their engineers and he or some one else would call me back in around a week becuase of the holly days..
SSooooo , I would say, lets not hold our breath..

  • Backup 3: Define Home Folder ? wwwroot  Included?

Does anyone know what exactly is getting backed up?
I notice that Backup 3 lets me backup my home folder. Cool. Does that mean my entire home folder? Specifically I do web development and one of my main folders is the wwwroot folder of ColdFusion development server. This file is located in Applications/ColdFusionMX7/wwwroot.
I have used SilverKeeper for years and with that I can specifically select folder within Applications but I notice Backup 3 will not let me select folders within Applications. Shall I continute to back this up with SilverKeeper?
Also if I elect to Backup my homefolder then I assume I do not need to indvidually select Pictures, Address Book, or other iLife settings right?

I don't see anything different about yours from mine. I have no problem renaming another account home folder.
All the reasons I can guess at for it not being available you seem to have verified.
Copy and paste in this command in Terminal. Make sure there is a space after what you paste, then drag in the old home folder. It will list the ACLs and any Finder flags on the folder.
    ls -dleO
You should only see this after the line listing the folder info:
    0: group:everyone deny delete
In the first line of the output, you should see a - between "staff" and the file size number.
There isn't any difference between the move command and doing it with the Finder, except the safety of not typing anything wrong. I imagine the Finder calls mv when it renames, but I don't know for sure.

  • Backup Home folder to XHD

    Hi,
I'm trying to backup my Home folder to a Lacie external harddrive.
Everytime I do this it comes across files that it's unable to copy,
but it doesn't tell me exactly what file and what folder it's in.
So I end up having to copy over each folder in my Home folder individually,
to work out which one it's having trouble copying.
Is there a way of expanding the error information during copying to find out the path of a file that it's had trouble with?
Also, when it comes across a file it has trouble with it stops the copying process and doesn't copy the rest of the files in that folder or any other folders.
This time I've worked out that it doesn't want to copy a folder of the Skype programme that's directly in Home>Library
This folder is listed as type Alias, but when opened it contains other files to do with the Skype programme.
I'm not using Skype at the moment. Would it be best to uninstall Skype?
What's the best way to do this?
    Can I trash the folder Home>Library>Skype ?
I wanted to check that it's ok to trash stuff from my library folder myself.
Also, if I want to back stuff up what else should I be copying apart from my Home folder?
    Thanks

If the Skype folder is truly an alias, that means that its linking to another folder, perhaps a folder that you don't have permissions to copy (although that seems odd as all you need are read permissions to copy). You are trying to copy, rather than move, right? You could also try to copy from the terminal at which point it would give you an error for every file that doesn't get copied. HTH.

  • TIME MACHINE (10.5.2?) DOES NOT KEEP HOME FOLDER FILEVAULTED

    Hello friends,
I have been using TM & FileVault successfully for awhile. I recently noticed on the TM backup drive that my home folder is backed up UNENCRYPTED!!! I have FileVault turned on and it has appeared to backup my home folder at appropriate times. My concern is WHY IS TM NOT KEEPING MY HOME FOLDER ENCRYPTED THROUGH FILEVAULT?
If I take the TM backup drive and connect it to a Windows machine, or even another Mac, I am browse the Backups directory with no problem and see all my files and documents UNENCRYPTED. Even on the Windows machine!
Can anyone else confirm that TM does not keep their home folder encrypted? Why were end-users not made aware of this issue? And, how do we fix this MAJOR SECURITY FLAW?!

Time Machine simply looks at the files that your user account can see. Since your user account can see the files within your file vault, it reads them, having no real inkling that they started out encrypted. Just as OS X hides the encryption/decryption from you, so does it hide it from Time Machine.
The .sparseimage that underlies the file vault is just one big file, and changing a single byte in a single file in your file vault would cause Time Machine to have to back up everything.
Is this a bug? Not really. It's working as designed. Is it an oversight? Yes. Agreed. Is it a major oversight? Depending, yes.
However, if you were to take all the files in your file vault and drag and drop them to the same drive, the same thing would happen.
Right answer? Apple should support encrypting ALL time machine backups, regardless of origin.

  • Is it possible to install my home folder on an external drive?

I need to hand my MacBook in for repair, but I don't want any of my documents on it when it goes in to the repair shop. I have full Time Machine back-ups of the entire laptop, but is there any way I can install my home folder on an external drive so that while my laptop is being repaired I can continue working as usual with my external hard drive plugged in to another (older, smaller hard drive) laptop?

Get an empty external drive properly formatted. Get Carbon Copy Cloner 4.0 and use it to backup your Home folder to this external drive. Create a new admin user account and turn off auto login if it is enabled. Reboot the computer and sign into the new user account. Delete your user account.

  • I'm administrator of Macbook Pro. Can't get a home folder? Previous owner is off User list but still had a home folder on side bar. How do I get rid of hers and get a home folder of my own? Thanks for any help.

Hi: Bought a MacBook Pro age circa 2011,works great, except I understand I need to have a Home Folder. I am listed as administrator in the User accounts  pref, in fact I'm the only user there. Still in the sidebar when starting up the Mac, there is the former owners Home Folder and not one for me. I want to delete her Home Folder and get one in the sidebar for me. I've tried all the things I could think of the delete her folder, but can't seem to do it as there isn't a button or prompt that I can click on to delete her folder and create one for me as the adminstrator. I'd really appreciate any help with this problem that someone might give me. Carol

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If I have understood you properly, to do that, you have to create a new administrator user with your name and for your uses. Follow these steps:
    1. Open System Preferences > Users & Groups, and press the + button to create a new administrator account.
    2. When you have finished creating that user, open  > Log Out, and log in your new user.
    3. Open System Preferences > Users & Groups, select the old user and press the - button to remove the user. If you want, you can select the option to remove the Home folder of this user, so you will only have the Home folder for your account
