Bootup hang and then some apps not launching

Bought magic mouse at weekend - installed OK and worked. Don't know if magic mouse relevant to problem- saw one thread which suggested reducing speed of double click to cure failure to launch app - tried this after the hang below and no difference - so the hang may be unrelated to new mouse.
Computer (late 2007) hung when booting up few days later. Sound and apple screen normal. Then hung on blue screen. Rebooted - same. Researched and started in safe mode - booted up to normal finder screen. Restarted - normal boot up but various apps eg mail, address book, quicktime, ical won't launch from either the dock or apps folder. Preview won't open file. In the dock icons move up and down jerkily then disappear. If launched from apps folder large pixellated app icon momentarily appears then vanishes. Some third party apps eg notebook launch normally from apps folder.
Have run disc utility from SL - no hard drive errors reported. Fixed permissions etc. No difference. Saw a note which said the SUID ? file had been changed but could not be repaired - don't know what that means. Have reset PRAM - no difference. Downloaded Onyx and SL combo update but neither will launch. Tried re-installing SL but this hung and would not instal with error message 10822 the operation cannot be completed. Computer generally running slowly and jerkily.
Help please! The extra RAM is Crucial and was installed about 9 months ago.

That indicates corruption or conflicts with 3rd-party things in the normal boot account. Create a new admin user account and see if that fixes the problem. As for QuickSilver and the scripts, that might indicate that they're in Login Items and usually mount on startup. I recommend deleting them from the login items. Also, check the various /Library/LaunchAgents/, /Library/LaunchDaemons/, and /Library/StartupItems/ for rogue processes. If you don't have the issues in this new account, then you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything not on that list into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

    Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open one of those apps.

  • Upgraded to 7.0.1 and then Firefox would not launch.

    Upgraded to 7.0.1 last night. Firefox would not launch afterward. Hour glass appears for a few seconds then goes away. I can see on Task Manager that Firefox.exe appears in the Proceses list and then after a few seconds disappears. No browser, no error message. After going through every troubleshooting step I could find I removed 7.0.1, downloaded 3.6.23 from Firefox site and this works fine.

    Very strange. So today I log in to my banking site and everything is working properly. Firefox tells me I am running the same version 8.0.1. Who knows! I guess I should just be happy that Firefox works as it should.

  • After backing up iPhone and then restoring, apps not restored properly

    Hey guys,
    I've noticed something that's pretty annoying with iTunes (latest version) and my iPhone 4. After doing a full backup, and then later a restore from that backup, all of my data gets transferred over properly except for my applications. I think that only certain applications get transferred over and my apps don't end up in the folders that I created on my phone before the backup and restore process.
    Is this expected? It's weird that iTunes remembers my music, photos, contacts, and other settings but totally gets it wrong when it comes to putting my apps+folders exactly the way they were before the backup/restore.

    I just had a similar problem with my 3G - I had done a full backup, and then later restored the backup. Everything was restored to my iphone except my apps. They all appear to still be on iTunes, but only a few were restored to the phone, and iTunes won't transfer any of the apps manually either. All are checked to sync, but none are doing it. Really aggravating.

    The other day i deleted my email accounts off of my ipod and only reloaded a few of them. today i looked at my notes to look at a project i had typed on my notes because i didnt have paper and pen around to write it and i didnt want to froget. I reloaded the rest of my emails in hope that everything would reappear but sadly only some of them from 2010 loaded. Recently i had update some of the files and they were like they were when i first created them there were alos ones that i had deleted long ago. There are other notes i had made that were really important to me to andi wouldn't be able to remember every single one. Help Please!

    First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

    Those sites take a long time to load for me (almost a minute)
    Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache.
    *Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
    *Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    *Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC)
    Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
    *Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
    "Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
    *Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

    Hello all -
    I just updated to iOS 4.3.2 and now any app I launch just crashes and goes back to the home screen. PLEASE HELP.

    I did the following:
    1.  Restarted iPhone - Did not work
    2.  Uninstalled an App and reinstalled an App - Did not work
    3.  Installed a new App - Did not work
    4.  Updated several Apps - Did not work
    5.  Did the Transfer Purchases - Did not work
    6.  Logged in and out of Apple Store - Did not work
    7.  Re-registered my PC - Did not work
    8.  On the iPhone I reset all settings - Did not work
    9.  Called Apple support they wanted $69 to help me - Shame on Apple!  This is their problem with they crappy updates that don't properly update the licenses for the Apps.
    The only way I finally got this fixed was to go into my device on iTunes and go to the apps tab (defaults to summary tab) and make sure your sync Apps box is checked then update an app, download a new one, or delete and reinstall an existing App.  Also make sure your automatically sync new apps is checked.  This worked and all Apps open now.  If this did not work my next step was to go and restore from an old back up.
    I feel like Apple should pay me $69 for figuring this all out and helping their customers.  Bad business model with their support.  If my company did not require me to have this device I would switch to something else.  Just my two cents not impressed by Apple or their crappy support.   Everyone should not be charged because they don't know how to properly release an OS update.  Wrong path to go down Apple.

    You should only make purchases for all your devices using a single Apple ID.  There is no need, and indeed a good reason not to, set up a new Apple ID with each new device purchase.  While items purchased under different IDs can be played on a single device, you cannot merge Apple IDs and it makes it cumbersome.
    Apple IDs do not expire but may become dormant and require reactivation if they are not actively used.
    You should make note of your Apple ID and passwords and keep a record of it.  Like a bank account it contains access to items with value.  Update your Apple ID email address as they change.
    I see you were guided to this forum by a help page on recovering your password.  If that is not sufficient try the links below.  Apple will need to verify you are indeed to owner of the accounts to which you are trying to gain access.

    Do you have the same problem with printing from other apps, such as TextEdit? Have you looked at your printer's control panel to see if an error condition is displayed there, and if so, what is it?
