Bootup problems, from bad to worse--HELP

Yesterday my iBook appeared not to wake from sleep, and from that point on I have had trouble booting up the machine. Sometimes it boots up but freezes after one or two operations in the Finder; sometimes I hear the HD but the backlight never comes on, and eventually I either force-restart or force-shutdown; and now, I either get no backlight or a screen with two or three broad bands of black & grey with uneven, crayon-like borders between them--yikes.
Here's what I've tried:
- boot in safe mode (worked once; I ran disk utility which verified the disk and fixed permissions for two files)
- reset PRAM
- boot to OSX CD (holding C at startup; didn't work--I'm not certain it's a bootable CD but I think so)
- remove AirPort card
- remove additional memory card (which may not leave enough to run Tiger)
If it weren't for the freezes I'd have thought this was a display problem (I've already had both of the iBook display problems with this machine, both repaired under the extended repair program). But now I'm thinking it's a hard disk problem.
I'm about to try to mount the disk in target disk mode on another machine.
The good news is that I have backed up this disk, the bad news is that my latest backup is about 2 or 3 months old. Sigh.

Hi Alex,
It sounds as if your ibook is suffering from the dreaded logic board failure that runs right across the line of G3 ibooks.
It is caused by the solder deteriorating which provides the graphics chip contact with the logic board and thus causing it to come loose.
Do you find pressing on the left hand side of the ibook makes it start up as normal or by pressing underneath on the left?
If it does make it work then it sounds as if you have this failure.
You can fix this by putting a shim underneath the graphics chip forcing it to make contact correctly. But this doesn't always work perfectly.
Try that pressing on the left and see what happens. Other wise you may be able to ring apple customer relations to ask if they would repair your ibook as an exception. Apple ran a repair scheme to sort this problem (http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/) but as your ibook is late 2001 it is out of the 3 years warranty apple covered it for.

    OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
    Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

    Hi,
       You can call a method of a class from BADI. Here are the steps.
       1) In the BADI implementation create a object for the proxy class.
       2) Call the Execute_Synchronous method.
        You can define a BADI by using SE18 and you can implement it by using SE19.

  • 3 problems, ranging from bad to worse.

    _Problem 1_. Started about 6 months ago, but wasn't that hard to work around. I can only add a maximum of 5 files to the library at one time. If I try to select more than 5, iTunes just ignores me AND my request. Rude.
    _Problem 2_. When I started poking around in preferences to try to fix Problem number 1, I discovered many little additional menu items quietly placed there by iTunes upgrading itself. If I tried enable or disable or just simply change an option, I hit "Apply", then "Ok". To which I'm sullenly greeted by the following iTunes Error Message:
    "An error occurred while updating the default player for audio file types. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation"
    The only option is "OK", which I press, and assume that nothing has happened.
    Even Ruder (considering this is MY PC, and i'm the only person using it ... and yes, I have Admin rights ; )
    _Problem 3_ just occurred last night and I'm now completely fed up. My lovely 60gb 5gr decided (apparently) that it no longer liked me, my music or my videos and got rid of all of them. Finis.
    After Prob 2 first happened, i THOROUGHLY removed iTunes (even manually scanned the registry), reinstalled, reimported the library, and it looked like we might be getting along ... Probs 1 and 2 started to happen simultaneously again, and the Prob 3.
    Now it won't reload my library and just sits there and looks at me like it has NO IDEA that I still have 30 days left on my extended warranty and WILL drop it's little lame butt off in SOHO and pay it no mind as I traipse off with a new one ... but I digress.
    Hopefully I've made somebody giggle or SOMETHING and these problems sound like ones you've experienced.... HELP ME!!!! (please?? ... i'll make u laugh again and thank you profusely -- honest!)

    You're on the path to a renewed system! You see, I had a Codegen PSU once, with in fact slightly better stated specs than yours have. All kinds of trouble, devices failing and performance below the level of reasonable criticism. After changing to a Zalman 400W... Oh man, what a difference!

    but i cannot use the date column to sorting. so that i changed to use postID to sorting from bottom to top.
    i want to know how to sorting the result from bottom to top . is it "select * from postTable DESC;"
    if cannot, then i changed the format to number for the postID. is it sorting correct??

    1. Best suggestion is to use a number for the ID and if you want to display "News##"...add the "News" prefix when displaying or concatenate it together with the id in the select portion of your query.
    2. If you wanted to leave it as is...
    select postID from postTable order by TO_NUMBER(SUBSTR(postID, 5)) DESC
    where TO_NUMBER is the function used by your database to convert from text to a number AND
    where SUBSTR is the function used by your database to return a substring starting at a given index in a text field
    3. I am curious as to why you couldn't sort by the date column. Is it possible that it was a textual timestamp? If so, you could have used a conversion function in the order by clause to make it a true date.

  • From bad to worse - pacman doesn't respond

    last night I installed wine and now arts (artsd) crashes at every start. I already had a problem with kwin crashing occasionally and now strangely ktip keeps popping up and although I tell it not to it's giving me great tips at every start.
    allright, one thing at time: obviously I want to get rid of wine first but now pacman isn't responding to any commands and I have to kill it. OK, --version and --help respond but --refresh, --sync and obviously --remove don't.
    It is a fresh install of arch 0.7 and pacman is 2.95. I've also tried running pacman before starting x.
    any thoughts?

    I really don't know what happened, it looks worse than before.
    Here's all I can say:
    pacman-static didn't help
    got pacman 2.9.6 and put pacman-optimize in /usr/bin and ran it
    it backed up the dir /var/lib/pacman to /pacman.bak
    ran pacman (not sure what, probably --remove wine) said /var/lib/pacman doesn't exist - duh!
    ran --refresh - said it couldn't create db
    rebooted and saw lots of read-only errors
    ran pacman --refresh - can't create db
    tried to rename /var/lib/pacman.bak to /pacman - write error
    I mentioned in the orig post that after I installed wine, artsd crashes. Now I notice that when I open Konqueror, instead of the menu on the left (dir tree, favs, network, etc) I get an amarok menu! Is this because of arts?
    what are the chances of solving this without a new install?

  • Why does TB freeze when I click account settings? (Going from Bad to Worse!)

    A few days ago I posted a question about migrating backup emails in TB. I got some help, but not a definitive answer to my problems. Unfortunately, my wife and I seem to have created an additional problem which has to be resolved before we go back to the file migrating issue. TB now freezes when I attempt to check an account's settings. This may have been caused by our attempt to copy an old email folder (an .sbd file), into my current profile. This is how it went:
    We copied one backed up .sbd folder to
    C:\Users\FF\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\pnp8j2nf.default\Mail\Local Folders
    We saw no changes in TB.
    Then, in TB, we created a folder under Local Folders, giving it the same name as the .sbd we had copied. The contents then became visible in TB.
    When I tried to check an account's Settings, TB froze. Restarting TB didn't help. Then we tried to backtrack our previous steps by deleting the newly created folder in TB and the .sbd file in Local Folders. I have rebooted TB and PC, but TB still freezes when we try to check Account Settings.
    Thinking that we might have corrupted the Profile, we also re-named the 8 character Profiles .default under C:\Users\FrankF\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles and C:\Users\FrankF\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles, hoping TB would generate a new Profile, but now TB will not start without the profile.
    We are wondering if we should delete profiles.ini or delete its contents to force TB to create a new profile. Any advice on what is causing the freeze and how to correct it? Thanks in advance.

    Maybe you could still use the Mozbackup tool if you have all your original profile folders and files, the ones you backed up.

    Make sure the profile you want backed up by MozBackup is at at "C:\Users\"YourUserName"\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird".
    Then all you'd need is to remove (keep a backup though) that profile currently at "C:\Users\"YourUserName"\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird".
    Then uninstall and reinstall Thunderbird.
    Finally, use MozBackup to restore your backed up profile.

  • Ipod touch 4g is going from bad to worse!!!!!

    Hi, so about two years ago I received an ipod touch 4th generation for Christmas. It was going great and was a great device up until about 2 or 3 months ago. So basically, in July I dropped my ipod and cracked the screen of it. I sent it to a local repair store to get the screen repaired and ever since I collected my ipod from the store it has been a nightmare. First the keyboard just went out of control and would not type. Second the power button got jammed together and I now cannot turn off my ipod. A few more incidents happened but then just last week the ipod went black and refused to turn on again. I noticed that it is actually on the home screen but the screen has just gone black.
    If anyone knows a solution it would be a great help because all my apps are on my ipod and I cant get them on any other device other than apple.
    Btw sorry that it was really long I just wanted to fully describe the issues incase any of you guys can relate to any of them.

  • My Bionic just went from bad to worse

    Ok, after suffering through spotty 3G/4G issues, I replaced my Bionic. Got the replacement on Jan 16, 2012. Still had the same spotty 3G/4G service. That's the bad.
    I spent most of yesterday Feb 2, 2012, with no 3G/4G at all. It would be on for 4 or 5 minutes then drop and be off for minutes to hours. That's heading to worse.
    Some time between 1AM and 5AM this morning, the phone seems to have died. I cannot get it to power on. It was working went I went to bed, and in 4 hours, it's managed to brick! That's the worse.
    Enough is enough! Verizon and Motorola both need to get their acts together! *THIS* is ridiculous.

    @mykayla1025: Put it on your Charger an see if you can get it going Before you give all Up.  Call Customer Service an have them ship you out a New Sim card When you get that Sim Take it out of it's Holder Very Care fully an Do Not touch the Gold Area. Just wanted ask Did you happen to buy at the Store If you Did what might of Happen when that Sim was Installed it could have been Touched on the Gold Area if it Was it will not Function Properly.
    That means the phone will not work as it should I am wondering if this is what's happening to a lot of these 4G phones that are out there Reps or Customer are installing these Sim an by not Watching what they Are Doing are touching that Sensitive Gold Area. We all have Static Electricity in our Body's an if that area is Touch it will make that Sim Not work as it Should or worse make it worthless in the Device.
    But have them send you a new one follow what i said an see how it Goes this might fix the Issue. Good Luck.

  • ITunes has gone from bad to worse

    iTunes 8 is garbage, should have never been released. Genius is worthless, shows me what I already have instead of recommending other stuff to me like it claims. Mini-store is gone and I use that. So I trashed v8 and put v7 back on.
    Now it won't read my iPod and all my purchased songs have vanished. My purchsae history is correct, but nothing in the purchased songs section.
    This is why I hate Apple products, garbage, worthless, and a waste of time.
    Are there any other programs that will sync with an iPod? And how can my iPod be read by iTunes?

    The issue(s) have been resolved. While it appeared to be all one 1 issue,
    it was actually several different ones, and if this helps anyone else... so be it.
    My scenario: 
    A book borrowed from the library was made available on my work pc via ADE... if I just waited til I got home... :-(
    I wanted the book to be on my nookColor, and was attempting to get it there via my home computer,
    So first I wanted to share the book across PCs and then to my nookColor.  So the issues I had:
    nookColor registration via home computer
    resolved after numerous attempts following ealier suggestions... (directory removal, disconnect, start ADE, reconnect)
    something to note (make sure ADE is not active when removing directory folders from nook, otherwise they seem to stay)
    getting second pc to receive/have access to borrowed book
    instructions indicate that copying the pdf of epub would be sufficient, actually needed to copy ascm file
    (again, computers were networked, so having ADE active on one seemed to impact the other)
    I was able to get all devices registered with the same adobe ID,  I copied the ascm file from work machine to home,
    opened the ascm file on home machine (network disconnected), connected nookColor, then transfered the book's
    library location... viola!  been reading and liking the nook since.

  • IPhone preorder goes from bad to worse

    I was up early Friday and received a call back from a sales rep I spoke with on Thursday. So far OK. However the 6+ was already not available for 9/19 delivery by then. So we completed order for 2 6's for 9/19 and a 6+ for 10/7.  Received order confirmations. But the late Saturday received email to call Verizon. First order for 2-6's was on hold because Visa kicked back the "test" transaction. Easily remedied as they ran the charge again. Once it looks OK it comes back off until ship date. However the 6+ order was on the system but "empty" and wasn't going anywhere. So it had to be cancelled and preordered again pushing delivery to 10/28 and losing free overnight shipping in favor of 2-day shipping. The rep apparently put in a "jump the line request" but who knows since order confirmation still says 10/28 and a check of the order online still says "in process".
    But there's more! I specifically ordered 2-64 GB 6's: one space gray and one gold. But apparently (and I missed this in all the other issues) it got put in as a silver and a gold (basically both "white"). So I have no idea how I'll resolve that one. I don't want my wife and I to both have white, plus I just don't care for white. But phones are already at FedEx facility for delivery on Friday.
    So, am I only one not having fun in this whole process. I've been a long time Android user and decided to make the switch this time. Started out being excited but now I'm just disgusted with the whole thing.
    Anyone one else have preorder day horror stories?

  • Goes from bad to worse

    After weeks of calls emails ....engineers turning up when the shouldnt ..... booking calls between 6pm to 9pm because of work..... they call in the morning....taking 4 different days off !!! for problems to be fixed !!! still not fixed !!! NOW I have no phone line, so yet again email the fault ......what is a convenient time to call again  as above, so of course they phone at 11am.
                                            I really wish I had never taken a contract out with bt what a sham.... infinity is a waste of time. after being on the call centre calls for god knows how long with no effect. I am paying £45.00 a month for a less than part time service...SHAME ON YOU BT !!!!

  • Change from bad to worse

    Good morning! I live in Caracas, Venezuela, and the January 6 went to Miami Beach to repair my old iphone which had a problem with the microphone, as it was under warranty, they changed my phone for a new one. Arriving in Caracas on iphone started to turn on and off just over and over again, giving me an error in the diagnosis of panic.plist. Now the warranty expired and here in Venezuela do not repair the phone and give me a new one. What can I do? It would have been better to stay with my old iphone with damaged microphone.

    If the phone came from the US, you will have to take it back to the US or send it to someone you know there to take in and have it evaluated. Replacement phones carry the balance of the original phone's warranty, or 90 days, whichever is longer.

    I have been trying to run iTunes on Vista for about 6 months.
    First with some effort it ran and worked.
    Then the "update" came.......had to re-install iTunes to get it working again
    Then the "update" came.......could listen to music, but not rip any longer
    Then the "update" came.......7.6.2.9
    Now all I get is this lovely box saying "iTunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration"
    I have uninstalled and re-installed for the entire day in all combinations.
    So I am looking for some one with ideas.....I am holding off my kids and their 3 iPods and haven't even considered telling my wife she can't update her music
    Are not "updates" suppose to resolve usability issues????? Maybe I am just confused.

    Also are you running Norton 360 or some other security software? Try turning that off next time you install/upgrade iTunes. And make sure to run the install from your hard drive, not over the internet.

    I have a 30 gig video iPod, and it worked just fine for the longest time, until recently, when i would plug it in to update the playlists and whatnot in iTunes, it shows as being busy. When I tried to eject it, a message came up saying i couldn't eject the iPod b/c there are other programs using the iPod, so i closed out of every program, and tried dragging the iPod to the trash, but it still said the same message.
    I tried all 5R's and none worked, i couldn't reset the iPod b/c it said there was another program using it. Then I went into the Disk Utility and tried to unmount it, but the same dialogue box came up, saying it was unable to unmount, another program was using it. I couldn't reset it from the Disk Utility either.
    Then i left it alone, in the hopes it would fix itself if i just left it alone. I came in later and the iPod had for sometime continually restarted itself, as in showing the black screen with the Apple logo, then the backlight would flash on for a split second and it would reset and repeat the process. It did that until it ran out of batteries, and i am through figuring things out for myself, before i blow it up.

    When I tried to eject it, a message came up saying i couldn't eject the iPod b/c there are other programs using the iPod
    I had this same problem the other night, and I didn't have any programs but iTunes running. I just ended up unplugging it from my computer and it still works.
