BorderLayout help

I got a project to make a 2 player Mastermind game (yah I know, alot of threads about it XD ) using the MVC approach, and server-client.
I planned the GUI already, but I was wondering if it was possible to set the percentage of space (like how many% width) one area takes up.
A picture of my GUI sketch can been seen here
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Loner1337/Gamegui.jpg
I am planning to use only the WEST, EAST, and SOUTH of BorderLayout, and I want the WEST part to be around 70% of the total width, and EAST part to be 30% of total width.
Is this possible, or am I using the wrong layout manager?
Thanks for reading, any help greatly appreciated!

You could try using a BoxLayout or a GridBagLayout. Give each component a width of 70 and 30 intially. I believe that as the space increases it will attempt to assign the space proportionally to each component.

  • HELP, HELP, HELP, Problems using GridBagLayout with BorderLayout

    I have a BorderLayout for my application. I created a JPanel that has the following items added to it:
    1)Button
    2)VisualComponent
    3)ControllerComponent
    The JPanel is then added to the WEST Pane of the BorderLayout. My problem is that I can not get my components in the JPanel to display correctly. The items should be added from top to buttom in my JPanel, but they overlap and display side by side, and some don't appear at all until my entire window application is Maximized. It seems as if all my components are trying to display in one row even though I explicitly add them to different rows as follows:
    1)addUsingGBL(openFile,0,1,2,1);
    2)addUsingGBL(visualComponent,1,1,1,3);
    3)addUsingGBL(controlsComponent,4,1,2,1);
    where addUsingGBL is as follows:
    void addUsingGBL(Component component,int row, int column, int width, int height)
    gbc. gridx = row;
    gbc.gridy = column;
    gbc.gridwidth = width;
    gbc.gridheight = height;
    gbLayout.setConstraints(component, gbc);
    mediaPanel.add(component);
    mediaPanel.doLayout();
    If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Entire code is available if needed. Thanks!

    void addUsingGBL(Component component,int row, int column, int width, int height)
    gbc. gridx = row;
    gbc.gridy = column;
    gbc.gridwidth = width;
    gbc.gridheight = height;
    gbLayout.setConstraints(component, gbc);
    mediaPanel.add(component);
    mediaPanel.doLayout();
    }I see that the problem is that you are using the same gridbagconstraints reference to add all your components. In effect, all your components refer to the same gridbagconstraints , you are getting all the components on a single row. The solution to this is simple - Try this out and tell me whether that works...
    void addUsingGBL(Component component,int row, int column, int width, int height)
    //Add this line in the beginning...
    gbc = new GridBagConstraints();
    gbc. gridx = row;
    gbc.gridy = column;
    gbc.gridwidth = width;
    gbc.gridheight = height;
    gbLayout.setConstraints(component, gbc);
    mediaPanel.add(component);
    mediaPanel.doLayout();

    That one's from a book. I used that code to start with my applet. Mine calls different merthod from the switch cases. Say I have:
    case 0: drawStart(g); break;

      /* something here */
    drawMain(g);
    public void drawMain(graphics g){

    //here's where i'm trying to pause
    //i've tried placing Thread.sleep between these lines
    g.drawLine(x, y, a, b);
    //Thread.sleep here
    g.drawRect(x, y, 50, 70);
    }I also need to put delays between method calls but I need to synchronize them. Am I doing it all wrong? The application pauses or sleeps but afterwards, it still drew everything all at once. Thanks a lot!

    It is. Sorry about that. Just answer any if you want to. I'd appreciate your help. Sorry again if it caused you anything or whatever. .n_n.

  • Need Help to Draw and Drag Triangle - URGENT

    Hi everyone - I am developing various proofs of the pythagora's theorem
    and the following code draws a triangle on screen and the proof follows -
    but i need to know how to drag the triangle such tht 1 angle is always set to 90 degrees.
    i.e. i need to resize the triangle by dragging its vertex points by which the1 angle remains at 90 no matter what the size.
    The proof has got some graphics code hardcoded in it - i.e. LINES AND POLYGONS have been hardcoded
    i need to reconfigure that such that everytime the user increases the size of the triagnle and clicks on next it draws the lines and polygons in the correct area and place

    THANKS

    One of the problems you face is that it is hard to recognise which parts of your code are drawing the triangle. This is because you are writing code in a procedural way rather than an object oriented way.
    In object oriented code you would have a triangle object that could draw itself. You would create the triangle object by specifying its sizes and angles in some way. Then it should be easy to change the triangles sizes and angles and ask all the drawn objects to redraw themselves.

  • URGENT HELP REQUIRED _ Creating Labels for Triangle

    Hi everyone... the code below is my application - Pythagoras Theorem.. or rather displaying it.. But i have not been able to get the Vertex of the triangle Labelled as A B C... I need to do that and change the Triangle Table data to A B C insted of Horizontal Vertical and Hypotenuise and as the triangle is stretched on screen A B And C keep moving as well ...
    Besides i need to Show this in the tabel
    - Values of A ^ 2 , B^2 and C ^2 as welll as a row showing A^2+B^2 = C^2

I need to prove Similarity in triangles using A Jslider that controls one triangle while the other triangle is Still on screen

    Sharan,
    The code given was part of the assignment and you are supposed to make the changes for your part right?
    Please give details of what you have done so far and not expect us to do your assignment for you. We'll be glad to help answer questions and point to the right direction, but giving us the entire assignment and saying, very nicely I might add, "Please do it for me." Just seems to make a mockery of the hours, days, and years that many of us has spent earning our degrees and learning our skills.
    Work on it and ask specific questions with examples of what you have done and you'll get a much better response.

  • PYTHAGORAS THEOREM __ URGENT HELP  NEEDED

    PLEASE HELP

  • PYTHAGORAS THEOREM ) HELP NEEDED

    PLEASE HELP

  • I am really sorry but I am still stuck. Please help.

    Please can someone help me with the following code. I have a number of questions. So far all buttons that I have coded actions for work fine. When The program saves it does it correctly as I have seen the text file. However I have some problems.
    1) How can I declare the arrays in another way without setting them to "" when the program starts. I need the program to start and show the previous saved arrays instead. I dont know if my method used for retrieving data from the file is correct either?.
    2) When retrieving the values from a file that has example (all are string values). ADAM SANDLER 111 222 333 MICKY MOUSE 222 444 666
    Where I want them to be in the follwing arrays as an example.
    String name[1] = ADAM
    String surname[1] = SANDLER
    String home[1] = 111
    String work[1] = 222
    String cell[1] = 333
    String name[2] = MICKY
    String surname[2] = MOUSE
    String home[2] = 222
    String work[2] = 444
    String cell[2] = 666
    Here is my code.

    It's pretty easy to write objects to file, but it depends on what you want to do with that file. Do you want it to be a human-readable text file? Is it only to be used by your program? The file is to be used by my program to save to and to read from. But I understand now that saving each entry as a string and not writing it to an array may be easier. Do I use the buffered reader instead of InputStreamReader? Oh sorry I forgot to mention that the file I save to will later be used when I convert my application to a database type/SQL tyype aplication.
    Edited by: Yucca on Mar 24, 2008 8:06 PMIt sounds to me like object serialization would be the easiest for what you want to do. Read through this:

    And these apis:

  • Item listener & combo boxes......please help me....thanks

    I did a applet that shows 4 jcombobox......the combo 2 is filling if the combo 1 is actioned, the combo3 is filling if the combo2 is actioned and the combo 4 have to be filled if the combo 3 is actioned.
    I did it...using item listener......it works fine....the first time....(in the console appears the lines that i specify using System.out.println).....but after...when i select any combo....i see in the console...that the itemlistener action is done several times......i dont know why......do you have any idea or suggestion about it?............
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi!!!
    Thanks by answer to me.....
    Yes ...i already understand why is happening in it.....
    I did modifications to my code to remove the listeners and after to add them....but no yet obtain my goal that the combo 2 is filling if the combo 1 is actioned, the combo3 is filling if the combo2 is actioned and the combo 4 have to be filled if the combo 3 is actioned.
    I think that at least should it to work for combo1 and combo2, because i don't know how to specify to add or remove the listener from the class de Panel_Data would be .....because i think that with:
    jcb3.removeItemListener(this);
    jcb3.addItemListener(this);
    jcb4.removeItemListener(this);
    jcb4.addItemListener(this);
    i am removing and adding the itemlistener from the main class w10_a (for combo3 and combo4)...... and not for the Panel_Data class.
    ie,
    jcb4.removeItemListener(
    //here is my doubt i don't know how to specify
    //to add or to remove the itemlistener from the
    //Panel_Data class for combo3 and combo4
    jcb4.addItemListener(
    //here is my doubt i don't know how to specify
    //to add or to remove the itemlistener from the
    //Panel_Data class for combo3 and combo4
    Well...i hope that you could help me please in give me some suggestions about it...
    Thanks in advance...

  • Help needed with if statement in a method

    Hi Ive created 2 string arrays. One holds a one digit user id no. and the other holds a 4 digit pin number. Ive then written a method which should take the userId no that has been sent to the method in the UserCode parameter find the same number in the custid array if it does it should then check the same position of the pin array and check that the pin number matches the pin no. the method has received in PINCode parameter.
    At the moment my method receives the parameters checks the userId no. but doesnt move on and check the PIN array.
    Any help would be great as Ive been staring at this for days now and I cant see the wood from the trees!
    public boolean checkPinAndUserId(String pinCode, String userCode)
              boolean found = false;
              for (int i = 0; i < userId.length; i++)
                   if (userCode.equals(userId))
                        if (pinCode.equals(pin[i]))
                                  found = true;
                        return found;

    I've posted my code in full so hopefully everyone can see exactly what I have been doing.
    Note - my code uses the observer/observable model. The method I am having the problem with the if statement is in the class HSBC as are the string arrays. in the class ATM in the action performed PINInput button events section, when the pin count reaches 4 it sends the parameters over to the HSBC checkpin&userid method.
    I've used the System.out.println() statements to see what's going on and it receives the parameters checkes the userid array but does not move on to check that the pin parameter matches the pin array?
    Any help would be great - Hope this helps.

    I would like output to either a JLabel or JTextArea to appear if a file appears on the network. Something along these lines…
    If file named nststrace*.* is in \\[network path] then output “Download successful, please proceed.”
    btw I have done my best to search this forum for something similar and had no luck, but I am looking forward to Encephalopathic’s answer as he/she has consistently made me laugh with posted responses (in a good way).
    Thanks in advance, Paul.

    we're starting to get aquainted, but I think "best friend" could take a while as it is still as hard going as I recall, but I will persevere.Heh, it's not so bad! For example, if I had no idea how to test whether a file exists, I would just scan the big list of classes on the left for names that sound like they might include File operations. Hey look, File! Then I'd look at all of File's methods for something that tests whether it exists or not. Hey, exists! Then if I still couldn't figure out how to use it, I'd do a google search on that particular method.

  • Help please! Java application and web application...

    Hi,
    I have a problem with inserting a java application (Main.java) in a web application(index.jsp).
    I found a source demo of a drag and drop application on the Internet, but now I want to
    have the drag and drop application work in a Jpanel/JFrame in a webapplication.
    The drag and drop application code:

    I'm using Netbeans 6.0 (GlassFish) to create webapplication using Visual Web JavaServer Faces.
    So in summary:
    How can i display the drag and drop application into a JFrame (better in a JPanel) in a webapplication (index.jsp)??
    Hope you can help...
    Thanks in advance...
    Greetings,
    Rajsh

    So have an applet that opens a JFrame... JSP or not has nothing to do with it, since it's nothing but HTML the client gets.
    You can't have a JFrame embedded in an HTML page. And if you could have an applet but don't know how to get that copied code to fit inside (I mean, content pane is content pane), you might want to consider learning how to do that.

    Hi,
    You are very lucky that I'm currently boored. You should never tag a question as urgent. It might be urgent to you, but not to us who answer. And you should also use code formatting when you post code (see the formatting tips, or use the code-button).
    I made some changes to your Graph class. The most important thing is the abstract draw method that I added to the GeomFigur class.
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class Graph extends JPanel {
        LinkedList figures;
        public Graph() {
            setBackground(Color.white);
            figures = new LinkedList();
        int z;
        abstract class GeomFigur {

            public GeomFigur(Color color) {
                this.color = color;

            public abstract void draw(Graphics g);

                super(c);
                this.p1 = new Point(p1);
                this.p2 = new Point(p2);
