Boris Red & FCP

Hello,
I would like to use Boris Red's transitions in FCP. Presently Red is installed as a stand alone and a plug-in to FCP in my Mac.
Strangely enough, I have been able to see it work inside FCP a couple of times. Other times it refuses to work.
I am sure I am missing something. I have read Boris' instructions and follow them to the letter every time I want to use Red in a transition.
Amazingly enough, I also found that there are TWO Red installed in my Mac. I am new to the Mac, when there is an update, isn't the old program replaced and written over by the new one?
Could this be the reason why Boris works sometimes?

I recently crossgraded from FCP5.0.4 to 5.1.2 on my Quad core G5 and my 17 G4 powerbook. Botis Title 3D completely crashes FCP on the G5 when attemting to create text. It works fine, though, on the G4 (???) I have trashed prefs, repaired permissions, reinstalled Boris only, reinstalled FCP. Apple tech support doesn't care! The Boris tech guy got so flustered with me he dropped his little headset on the floor. I have researched every applicable forum on the net and see that I am not alone. Notice that the first post in this thread is from early November. It is now almost February. No real solution. I love the "sibling" style behavior between the host app. co. (Apple) and the 3rd party co. (Boris) ..."It's not MY fault its HIS!!" "Is NOT" "Is TOO!"
I guess my problem is that I just need to pony up that $700.00 for Apple's "Pro applications technical support"
...maybe I should have purchased Edius Broadcast...

AE Error message: Unable to locate plugin "Boris Red 3.0 FCP Filter"

I have edited a project in FCS HD and went back to make some changes and now when I open the project I get an error message that says "Unable to locate plugin "Boris Red 3.0 FCP Filter."
I used the Boris Red application to make some effects and had no problem with this before. I have located the filter in the users library/Application support files but I can't get Final Cut Pro to accept it. I went to the Boris Red website and found no help there, nor have they responded to my requests for assistance so I thought I would look here.
Another user posted this same problem at another website and the responses he got were not useful either. Can anyone help?

I re-installed the program and nothing changed. How do I retro FCP?
The older version I used does not work on Intel Mac Pros and the graphics card it requires is also obsolete. (Actually, it died and couldn't be replaced which forced me to drop my G5 and get a new MAc Pro which started this whole nightmare in the first place!)
So am I screwed? There really is no way to fix this and save all that work now? I have the After Effects program so would it be better to just forget about Boris altogether and redo the entire project in After Effects?
If so, I can't believe what a waste of time and money Boris is. All because FCP cannot locate ONE filter? When the filter is sitting right where it is supposed to be?

Boris Red 3.05 Transition Crashes FCP 5.12

I never had problems with Boris FX, but after upgrading FCP to 5.12 nothing shows in the browser. I reinstalled Boris Red and Applied the patches from Boris site, it works when I applied the filter, but when I apply transition and double click on it than it crashes.
I called Boris Support for weeks, and finally they have sent me an email that made no improvement what so ever.
Does anyone know the solution?

Boris RED for Mac Pro

Any chance Apple will have a fix for FCP and Boris RED for the Mac Pro here soon? Boris says Apple's aware of the problem, it sure would be nice to start using my Mac Pro that I ordered months ago. Too bad I rely on RED so much.
Maybe Apple could buy out Boris???

This is a serious problem for Boris FX users. BorisFx crashes effected my previous projects in which I was still working on. I had to remove all the transitions and change them to filters. Even though Boris FX have the patches it will work for a while and very often I had to reinstall it again.
Speaking to Tech Support manager from Apple I did not get a straight answer. They said that normally the 3rd party software should adjust to the new Intel chip. I spoke to Boris and they claim that Apple knows about this problem and they are working to resolve it.
As for the Apple it would be very hard to rewrite the software that would be functional to all the 3rd party plugins. It's like Microsoft, they do the changes and let the other companies to adjust to the new OS, like for example IE7 or Vista. This is Sad but true.
I think it would be easier for BorisFX to modify their software to the new Intel than Apple check all the functionality of all the 3rd party software.
On the other hand Apple could have chosen a major plugin companies that brought them so many clients in the past and work with them on their changes.

Shake vs Boris Red 3GL vs After Effects 7

Hello,
I am ready to purchase an effects program, but don't know which of the three software programs to buy. Does Shake provide everything that After Effects and Boris Red 3GL provide? Also, I'm getting the picture that Apple is no longer producing Shake, is that correct? I would prefer to buy Shake because of the superb integration with FCP Studio.

The recent Shake converts among us sure love it.
I do not have Shake.
I'm an After Effects fan. I personally do not like the Boris interface but that's a personal problem for me, not you.
Each of those apps will do marvelous things but each has a totally different paradigm. you've got to figure out which one you want to work with for the next two or three years or which one you think will continue to be of value over the long haul.

Plug in boris red 4 for premiere cs5

I own both a PC and a mac 27 with 8 gigs of ram, I downloaded the trial version of Master Collection and cs5
Boris Red 4 for both PC and Mac. I installed on my PC and all is well, Mac in the list of program
for which you choose to install the plugin does not appear its premiere, why?

Boris Red and 5.1

Everytime I double click on a video with reds filters in it..... Final Cut Shuts down....
Is anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?

Have you visited the Boris site, checked for an update?
Boris is one of the better outfits for staying on top of glitches. If there's a fix, it will be there. They also have (umm, let me rephrase that "HAD") among the best customer support, too. Usually an email or even a phone call could resolve most issues.

Where to install fonts for boris in FCP 7?

I have a folder with a particular font. I would like to load the font so I can use it in Boris, FCP7 Where do I put the fonts?

Double click the font's icon. FontBook will open and present you with an install button.
Don't click it!!
Go to FontBook's Preferences and decide if you want it to be installed for all users (Computer) or your user folder
When you have made that choice, click the install font button.

Debayer Quality in RED FCP L&T Plugin?

Anyone have a clear answer as to what Quality the FCP L&T Plugin Debayers to? What Resolution the files are?
What are the downsides to using it?
I started out teachings students an Online with RedAlert/RedRushes in FCP 6.0.6, but now that we've migrated to 7, I'm not sure if we should change our lesson plans. It seems like EVERYONE has been asking me about L&T, and I'm pretty sure our workflow is better (for students, at least), but I can't really quantify it.

I have used both REDrushes (my perceived successor to REDAlert), and L&T - L&T is very straightforward and I am certain of the ability to recapture when needed. However, REDrushes does a FANTASTIC job of using all my processors - really pegs the needles on them - and the transcoding to ProRes goes perceptively faster.
That said, I prefer to work in REDCODE quicktimes (which L&T does quite handily). This is largely an I/O based operation (as it's simply restructuring and moving the data) and CPU doesn't factor in as much. But that workflow is better suited to a short form project...
Not sure any of that info is helpful, but it's what I got...

How to injest RED ONE camera footage in FCP?

Hi there,
I have downloaded the necessary drivers from the RED website and I am expecting to receive the files from the director off of his hard drive this week.
What should I be expecting in terms of files for an offline edit? Is there a link or process to view the steps to inject into FCP?

I am a whatever works for you guy...but at the same time I think it's important to consider once you are working with Red or 10bit source PRHQ may be your friend.

ProRes 422 is suitable for creating lower-quality files for offline editing, but ProRes 422 (HQ) is recommended for higher-quality mastering. Scaling 16:9 Sequence into 4:3 in FCP 6.0.1

I'm doing a lot of projects in 1080i but the client wants to have them as widescreen and fullscreen for use on different pages of their website. What I've been doing is editing the projects in a 16:9 timeline and then opening a new sequence that is 4:3 and nesting the 16:9 timeline in it. The problem is the clarity is not what I think it should be. I've tried multiple settings for the sequence and the best I've come up with, so far, is as follows:
Frame Size: NTSC DV(3:2)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601/DV(720x480)
Field Dominance: Lower(Even)
Editing Timebase: 29.97
Compressor: DVCPRO50 - NTSC (Quality 100%)
Any suggestions for adjusting the settings above for better results? Is nesting a recommended workflow for scaling the 16:9 footage. Any help appreciated, Thanks!

I thought that this was answered because compressor worked well BUT I'm having the same issue with a slightly different spin. I use Boris RED to do my graphics and when I import a rendered quicktime into a 4:3 project it's not scaling correctly. The interlacing is really horrible and I haven't found a setting inside of Boris that will mate with a setting for FCP timelines. For those that are not familiar with Boris the options given for render output are:
720x486 NTSC D1
720x480 NTSC DV
640x480 NTSC Square Pixels
648x486 NTSC Square Pixels
720x540 NTSC D1 Square Pixels
Custom Size
You would think that one of those would work well but so far, no joy. If you are an AfterEffects person and have a comp size that you use I'd love to hear that as well as it might put me on the right track. This doesn't seem like it should be so complicated!

"ease in - ease out" in new FCP 7??

I heard that the new FCP 7 allows us to get REAL ease-in\ease-out when creating moves on stills. I just made a couple of quick tests ... and I'm not noticing any great change in the subtlety of easing, or lack thereof, from previous versions of FCP. I'm working on a film with hundreds of stills, requiring endless camera\animation moves. I've been sending the sequences to Motion to get decent easing in and out; I was hoping the new FCP would make this unnecessary (based on the rumors I've heard).
Or perhaps it requires a different process when adding the ease-in\ease-out to the moves?

Hi -
I agree with David's post that it would probably be preferable to work in Motion or AE (or my favorite, Boris Red) - not only for the ease of creating the motion effects, but for what seems to be the better physical dynamics that those applications seem to have.
But . . . if you have to work in FCP, a couple of tricks I have learned in FCP when apply spline motion is:
1) Bracket the motion keyframes by putting a non-splined keyframe with the same position settings one frame before the real starting keyframe and one frame after the real ending keyframe. This helps prevent some of the "erratic" behavior.
2) To better see the mauve points, I enlarge the canvas to 400% or 800% and set the canvas view to wireframe only. I have a window arrangement saved that lets me quickly get the screen set up to make these adjustments.
But, as David and you point out, clearly the best way is to switch to Motion, AE or Boris Red.

Dual core 2.3 or dual processor 2.5 for FCP Studio 5?

I'm on the fence whether to buy a dual core 2.3 with a 7800GT card or a refurbished dual processor 2.5 with a x800 card. The saleman today was pushing the 2.5 b/c he said it was faster, though he said the x800 would run around 20% slower than the 7800GT. I had actually read that if anything the dual core 2.3 was faster. I've been looking all around (including barefeats.com) but can't seem to find much to confirm the graphics card statement. Thought I had read in a post here that they were also about the same speed. Is he right about this?
Untimately, I'm looking for something to run FCP 5 Studio and things like Boris Red and Combustion with. With the price difference being about $380 b/t the two options, which one would be faster and the better bet?

FCP doesn't care about your card. Much. Not now anyway, we have no idea what will happen in the next rev but the trend is toward offloading much of the work to the OS and GPU.
Buy what you can afford and buy what you think you need to make money now. You can always upgrade in 18 months when the second generation of the Intel machines are likely to be shipping.
Are you using Motion or Aperture? Different criteria. Dunno 'bout no Combustion, never been using it.

Which Boris to buy?

Disappointed with the limits of LiveType and unhappy with the mediocre quality of FCP's Boris (the text is blocky and flickers when zooming in) I figured I'd just buy Boris pro. Then I saw the prices...
Wow! This is one EXPENSIVE program, so I wanna make sure I get the right one. Can anyone recommend a version of Boris or some other software that will make clean titles with smooth movement for my FCP Studio movies?

Try using Title 3D, but don't use the Motion tab to move the titles... instead use the controls in the controls tab of the title. See if that doesn't clear up the titles. Boris' Red rules the roost, and includes basically everything Boris makes. But for Titles only, take a look at Graffiti.
If you are using the Motion tab to move the titles, and not the parameter changes in the Controls tab, this is the reason that the titles look bad.
