  • Bose 901 speakers and AV receivers

I am looking for a new AV receiver to use with my Bose 901 speakers in a surround sound setup. I need to find one that has pre amp out and main amp in connections. This is the only way Bose says it would work using conventional speakers for the surround channels.

Bose is great at marketing an bringing out over-priced, poor performing  products which limits the users capability.  Ever wonder why you can't compare their speakers side-by-side to all the other speakers in the store?
    My personal opinion aside...
To find such a receiver, you will have to look at the specifications to see if the products contains the appropriate connections.  I would check out Denon, Outlaw, and if you are serious about sound quality, then the high-end starts with Rotel.
I would be cautious since plugging their "equalizer" into the pre-out, main-in jacks will "equalize" the sound for all channels.  If you are just using the 901's for the front main LR channels, then I would think you would would want only those channels to be "equalized".  All non-Bose speakers may not sound correct receiving an "equalized" signal.  I am not 100% sure about this, but feel that I am close to being right.
I am not aware of a receiver or processor that allows for an external unit to be inserted into a loop for just a couple channels.   The only way to do that would be to have a separate surround processor and amplifier.  Then you could insert the "equalizer" between the output of the surround processor and the input to the amplifier.
Just what does that "equalizer" do?  Why don't all other speaker manufacturers use one?  Does it improve the sound or degrade it?  Remember, every piece of equipment in the sound chain between the source and speaker can only degrade the quality of sound.  If Bose has not used the best of components in their "equalizer", then your sound quality will suffer.
My last piece of advice is to move away from Bose in the future.  For the same amount of money, I would recommend B&W, Paradigm, NHT, or PSB.  You will get much higher performance and not be limited by Bose.
It is good that you are concerned about sound quality as the 901's are not cheap and I commend you for that.  Check out www.hometheatermag.com to see which products make the cut and which ones don't.

  • How do I set upmy Imac to allow using both my computer speakers and a Bose SoundLink system as outputs at the same time.  I can use one or the other, but not both.

how do I set up my Imac to allow using both my computer speakers and a Bose SoundLink system as outputs at the same time.  I can use one or the other, but not both.  From systems Preferences I must select one or the other.  I want both to work all the time.

    Hi,
I would recommend you to use 0FI_AP_4 rather using both, particularly for many reasons -
    1. DS: 0FI_AP_4  replaces DataSource 0FI_AP_3 and still uses the same extraction structure. For more details refer to the OSS note 410797.
    2. You can run the 0FI_AP_4 independent of any other FI datasources like 0FI_AR_4 and 0FI_GL_4 or even 0FI_GL_14. For more details refer to the OSS note: 551044.
    3. Map the 0FI_AP_4 to DSO: 0FIAP_O03 (or create a Z one as per your requirement).
    4. Load the same to a InfoCube (0FIAP_C03).
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Popping when new sound comes through, with Bose companion speakers.

I've used the Bose companion speakers for years with my 17" PowerBook and they were fine. Now, connected to my new 24" iMac they "pop" just before a new sound comes through, i.e. mail message coming in etc. I've connected them to my husband's 24" iMac and same deal. Apple has no idea why, and it's driving me nuts.

Just came from the Apple store, told the same story to one of the guys there who use to work in a recording studio. He knew what I was talking about. Now I've talked to Apple Care twice, Bose once, no answers. But this guy suggested a USB device, like an iMic which I happened to have so I gave it a try and so far, NO POPPING. I have my fingers crossed, but it seems to be working. I have the speakers plugged into the iMic, the iMic plugged into a USB port.
Bottom line, this is screwed up, I shouldn't have to do this work around. Apple has to know about the problem. But until they own up to it at least now I'm not going nuts with this noise. At least I hope not. I'll post again if I'm wrong.

  • Software switch between internal speakers and digital out?

I have a brand new Aluminum iMac.
My iMac is connected to my stereo receiver with the built-in S/PDIF Digital Output.
But sometimes I'd like to just use my iMac's internal speakers, so I don't need to power up the receiver.
But when I plug in the digital cable, OS X turns off my speakers, and vice-versa. The Sound Control Panel doesn't give me the option.
I've googled for a while on this -- it looks like Windows leaves the digital output on even if the internal speakers are playing, so this is clearly a software issue.
Is there any way I can use software in Leopard to switch between my internal speakers and my digital output? (Or to use both at once?)

    Funkey Monkey wrote:
Isn't there a software option out there somewhere?
I don't know fore sure, but I believe inserting a plug into
the audio output jack electrically disconnects the speakers.
Yep, totally brain-dead -- but so is the entire analog/digital
"combo jack" nonsense. It leaves you with no way to monitor
any digital audio signal being sent to an external device.
    Not with headphones OR speakers!
IMO, the only workable solution is a USB or Firewire
audio interface. If you only need digital audio output,
the cheapest stuff available ($25-ish) should be fine.
If you also want good 24-bit A2D/D2A converters, mic
preamps, etc. expect to pay $150 and up.

  • IMac doesn't deliver sound via BOSE active speakers. Why?

Tried to connect my imac with the BOSE Companion 2 active Speakers, as i always did before. Since i moved here i was too lazy to set it up again. Now i wanted to but theres no sound. Boxes have energy, the two are connected to each other and the cinch cable is connected with the imac, but it still plays sound via the integrated speakers and i cannot change this. Theres nothing to choose in the settings but play sounds via the integrated speakers. Why??

Make sure you have connected the audio cable's mini plug to the audio output jack on the iMac & not to the iMac's audio input jack & that the plug is fully inserted.

  • Burned CD will play on all machines except Bose Acoustic Wave

I regularly burn CDs (music purchased on iTune) on my Mac. I can play the CDs (-R) on all machines including the player in my car, my PC at work, the CD player at the gym but they will not play on my Bose Acoustic Wave at home. Any ideas?

CD-RW disks are unreliable as audio CDs. Try a good
brand of CD-R disks and see if you have better luck
    with those.
And you'll want to confirm that your car's player
supports burned CDs; not all players do.
Thanks for your reply. I have three SONY CD players (one is for recording to a minidisc) and every one of them misplays that song. They are all supposed to play CD-RW discs. I have used the TDK CDs before on iTunes but only certain songs seem to go wacky -- it's like a voodoo curse on those songs!! Why do 99% of the songs play correctly but 1% will not?

  • 5.2 update does not send audio from video played via Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices or AirPort Express.

I just updated my Apple TV to release 5.2, which is supposed to give Apple TV the ability to "Send stereo audio from movies, TV shows, and other videos on Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs)." Problem is, this does not seem to be the case.
I have two AirPlay enabled devices:
    1) Bose SoundLink Air
    2) AirPort Express
In the Apple TV menu, I selected Settings, AirPlay, Bose SoundLink Air. I then played a video; the audio from the video played from my projector's speakers - not from the Bose speaker. I then went back to Apple TV's Settings/AirPlay and selected "Airport Express" (which connected via an aux cable to a speaker)...audio continued to play over my projector's speaker. I can, by the way, play audio on both the Bose and the speaker connected to the Airport Express if I select either of them from the AirPlay menu.
Am I doing something wrong, or is the 5.2 update not working as described?

No. But, are your speakers only connected to the AE or are they also connected to an amplifier?
You would need to use a Toslink cable to go from the Apple TV to the speakers/amp.
I don't use this or know a lot about it, but it is wildly popular, inexpensive and may be of help:

  • No Sound from my Boston Acoustic Speakers

My Boston Acoustic BA7500G speakers and sub woofer simply don't work with my (relatively) new iMac Intel Duo Core. I'm running Tiger OS X 10.4.10. These speakers/subwoofer work fine with my PC, and a cheaper set of Yamaha speakers I have lying around work fine plugged into the Mac. I've tried switching out wires, powering up and down, etc... Is there a software issue or upgrade required for my soundcard or operating system?
Any (useful) advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply Marcus.... I spent a lot of time reading up on this issue, and what you described is the standard fix...however, when I get to the menu?you describe, there is no option box for me to check/uncheck digital on/off. I have an older Dell precision with a SB card, and it DOES have this digital on/off option. From what I can learn, the only way with my particular card to achieve digital out sound is to use the optical jacks. All the other jacks are analog, and I'm guessing that my digital speakers don't recognize the analog signal out? I'm not technical enough to know that for sure, but I can't figure out a way to make my speakers work, and of course they use the standard phono jack (single) and not an optical connection. I'm still hoping that someone from Creative will notice this thread and provide me with a fix. However, Creative has completely isolated themselves from being contacted. The Boston speakers are actually really good, and I hate to get rid of them...but since I have no sound I suppose I have no other choice...by the way, I've tried a different set of speakers (non digital) with my new Dell, and they don't work either....headphones do work, so I believe the soundcard is working....can't anyone help me? Please?!!?

  • Why is the sound from my bose mobile speakers "choppy" when paired with my Mac Book Pro but not my other apple products?

I have bose mobile speakers that use bluetooth to be paired with devices. I have successfully paired it with my ipad and iphone and the sound is phenominal. However when paired with my MacBook PRo the sound is very "choppy" and not clear. Would anyone know why this is?

Having sent my speaker to Bose to have it checked over, they returned it to me unable to recreate the problem saying it was fault free. They included the following instructions to adjust bluetooth settings to 40.
Open Terminal and use the command:
defaults write com.apple.BluetoothAudioAgent "Apple Bitpool Min (editable)" 40
Restart, turn off both devices then re-pair.
This has vastly improved the quality of sound on the speaker, although not ALWAYS perfect as have found that if I am working on the keyboard or browsing the internet at the same time as listening to music via Bose speaker there is a little jumpiness.
Further research in various forums has shown there are other settings to experiement with:
    30 – Low audio quality
    40 – Medium audio quality
    48 – High audio quality
    58 – Excellent audio quality
    Hope this helps.

  • Can i play cds through my Bose Airplay speakers without reducing to mp3

I have burned cd files in abundance, but if i wanted to play a cd without burning it to Itunes, will it play through Bose Airplay speakers?

I can play music from my ios devices without turning tv on.
When you select airplay, then select mirroring on, it turns the apple tv on. I then select a song from my music and it plays through my separate sound system. (Obviously not the tv as it's not on lol)
If I then turn off airplay and mirroring off, it does not however turn off the ATV but this will shut down to stand by on its own anyway after the preset time.
I'm sure this would work with spot iffy also.

  • Connect an ipod to external speakers and amplifer

how can i connect an ipod to external speakers and amplifer

    Rex,
Since the toslink is optical, the 3.5mm adapter will not work for you as it is only ment as a conversion to a mini-toslink cable. Your first option of using the DAC, is in my opinion the best and perhaps only way to get audio out without going to a fancy amp or tuner first.
One option that I'm considering is the Bose Solo TV sound system. It might set you back about 4-Grant's, but I generally enjoy the sound of bose for most music/tv/movie purposes; and it has a direct optical audio input that you can run either from your tv or your ATV. Whatever audio you're sending to your TV via the HDMI, should go to these speakers through your HDTV's toslink output with equal digital clarity.
I've read a few other posts on the apple discussion forum which lead me to believe that the optical output of the ATV might not work so well after the 5.2 update... so whatever I do, it won't be JUST for use with the ATV.
