  • Dark Grey screen telling me to restart

I saw a similar post, but the resolution referred to the G5, not the Intel IMac. I use my imac pretty hard, i use it for work. Every other day, i get this grey screen telling me to restart. (this is my first mac) when i restart, i do repair disk. Seems ok for about 48 hours. I usually have many programs open> entourage, dreamweaver, photoshop, parellels, itunes, neooffice, firefox.
    thanks for any help

i found the panic log. Maybe someone can try to interpret it for me. I notice the last thing says netblockade4 (this was something that i installed, and thought i removed) are there system files hidden?

  • My imac has a grey screen wont boot from hhd pls help

    hello,
I have an imac from late 2008 with snow leopard. Late saturday evening 24 Mar I had powered
down my imac then later turned it on. Now only a grey screen appears, nothing more. If I leave
the imac on a folder with a question mark appears and blinks.
I have tried the following to fix the problem and ALL HAVE FAILED:
    they are:
    1. resetting the pram. it doesnt work.
    2. booting from the installation cd. The imac doesn't even READ the cd, the screen remains grey and doesn't
    read the cd at all.
    3. booting in the safe mode. nothing happens, the screen remains grey.
    4. booting in apple hardware test mode: nothing happens screen remains grey.
    5. boot with option key pressed, so as to choose mac HD or my windows partition. nothing
    happens, the screen remains grey.
All of these have failed to fix the problem.
When I power on my imac I heard the chord, a slight spin of the HHD I'm sure that's what it is,
    and then nothing.grey screen.
I have tried unpluggling the power cord for 15 seconds, reconnecting it, waitiing five seconds
and then powering up the imac. it doesn't do any good.
any help anyone can provide will be appreciated.
do you think it is a hard drive error or failure?
why doesn't it read or boot from the instllation CD??  and yes I am using the correct disk.
thanks folks for yr help and opinions.
    Alfonso

Ok. so you stated the screen remains gray. Is it just plain gray? Does it have a folder with a question mark on it? Do you see the little pin wheel thingy?
You also stated you can't boot from the install disc. Turn the machine on and put the disc in the drive. Shut the machine down by holding down the start button for five seconds or so and wait a further 20 seconds. Restart the machine and hold down the 'C' key before the chime and keep holding it down until the machine boots form the disc. It can take up to three minutes to boot from the disc. Once it has booted from the disc select the language and go to the Utilities menu at the top and run the disc repair utility.
The hardware test is built in and should work regardless. Turn the machine on and hold down the 'D' key before the chime and keep holding it down until the hardware test starts.
I fear you have not given enough time or used the correct procedure to do the tests you state you have done.

  • Why does my computer not upload any updates, crash the internet all the time and give me the grey screen telling me to restart my computer more than it should?

I can't do anything without fear that it will ask for me to restart or simply crash. I dont know what's wrong. Update load then say there is an error right before finishing, but it does this with most things. Every internet browser I have tried gives me the "(insert browser name) had crashed" and then asks for me to send a useless report to apple. Its only a year and a half old and this started about 10 months into me buying it, i tried to just ignore it but i've lost important things.

Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set
to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your
updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow
    Firefox to connect to the Internet again;
    * Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version)
    * Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back. For detailed instructions, see

No, as I have yet to be convinced on Lion.
Did a permissions repair help from the install DVD?

As for now, only thing that helped was an archive and install with preserve user settings. Seems after the reinstall of 10.4. everything that was weird has become normal again. I hope very much this state stays on for a while - or ever!
A comment to everybody: with problems that are common you get a lot of help from friendly users in here, but if like in my situation things get a bit more uncommon than the usual querks and troubles your bound to go through a whole workflow of tests and algorithms - i did learn some new things but eventually I had to go for the ultimate - the reinstall (of course, erase and install would have been more work.) and it's frustrating not to find out how it came to this problem. I wish I could nail it down to something I did mistakenly - i guess I'll find out next time.
THANKS THOUGH to those who replied.

  • Macbook (Black) Will Not Boot After Update (grey screen of non-booting)

I bought my first MacBook less than one month ago.
Last night at 9pm the apple update software said there was an update and I should restart. It has not been able to boot since.
Now, when the computer turns on it shows a grey screen with a dark grey apple logo for a few minutes, then turns off again.
I am completely lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.
    Chris Albon

Sorry to hear about your troubles Chris.
Was this a System/Security update you installed or just for an application? Personally, I never install anything system related without first running a 3rd party Disk Utility like DiskWarrior. It's important to ensure that there are no latent issues before doing so. That being said, if you don't have access to DW, try booting up from your OSX installation DVD (insert the disk and hold down the 'C' key on startup) and choose Disk Utility's disk repair option from the file menu once it's loaded. Post back once you've tried this.

Hey, since I have updated to 10.6.3 I have a similar issue. When I put my macbook pro to sleep and I come back a few hours later and turn my external monitor on I notice that the macbook is ON, BUT frozen! The time is usually a few hours back, so the macbook must have started up and frozen shortly after I had put it to sleep. There is no way to restart but to hold down the power button, SUPER annoying!
Hope this will get addressed in an update. Any way your problem is connected to sleep mode?

  • Computer turns on and goes straight to gray screen telling me to restart.

I just finished installing Leopard on my computer and I decided to do a software update. While the computer was restarting it stayed at a blue screen for a while downloading files. This was taking too long and I had a paper to do so I manually shut down the computer. Now whenever I turn my computer on it goes to a gray screen and tells me I need to restart.
If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it

Will it boot in Safe Mode? See

Will your Mac boot using the Leopard install DVD? If so, you probably need to do a reinstall of Leopard. When you reinstall the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
    A couple of Tips.
    1. Before you install an update, ALWAYS repair permissions using Disk Utility. (Did you do this?) Then after the update is installed, repair permissions again.
    2. I only use the Software Update window to determine what System related software is available for update. I don't use the auto update feature because there could be the possibility of a data "glitch" during download, which results in system startup/operational problems. Then I go to Apple site & download the update file. Then I install it.
For an update to an application, like iTunes, I use the auto update. If there is a problem with the update, you can reinstall the application, but it doesn't cause startup problems.
     Cheers, Tom

  • What's with the grey screen telling me to power down?

So this has happened several times recently where after I've runned some programs, then this grey screen scrolls in with the power button symbol, telling me to shut down. I'm just wondering if this has something to do with my hardware or battery or power supply?
I've thought that I should run the hardware test, but I can never get it to boot up. You're supposed to hold down the option button till the startup manager shows up, right? But the screen remains black when I do it. Is this somehow related to my other question?

    Welcome to the Discussions.
    That's a kernel panic.

  • Mac Mini Update - Grey Screen will not reboot

I just ran an update on my 2010 Mac Mini, I think it was the 10.8.6 update as I just downloaded to my MBA as well.  I now have a grey screen that asks me to reboot every time I do it comes back to the same screen.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance

Well I tried the steps for a grey screen in the help section and it turns out it is a third party keyboard.  Any ideas now how to solve this or do I just junk it?

  • System start is not possible. Grey screen and demand for restart

After power-on I got a grey screen first, after approx. 15 secondes occurs a message "Restart the system". Unfortunately not more happens if I start the system from the HD. I have installed Mac OS X already new, but altrough the installation was sucessful I got the same result. Additinal I am not able to reject the DVD out of the DVD-drive.

Hi, tojapa - Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    You are experiencing kernel panics.
In addition to the troubleshooting possibilities contained in the linked document, I wonder if you have you installed any after-market RAM? (If yes, then take it out and see if that helps.)
Do you have any peripherals beyond keyboard and mouse attached to this machine?
Are you able to boot into safe mode, holding down the Shift key immediately after the startup chime? (If you are able to boot into safe mode, you'll be able to eject the DVD.)
Also, how do you know the reinstallation of the system software was successful? Were you able to start up into the newly installed system?

  • Update failed... Now I have grey screen with flashing icons. Please help!

I was installing an update for Leopard and I wasn't connected to a power source. I thought it would be ok because I had a full battery. The screen was half closed over also so it may have switched off during update. Whatever happened, now my MacBook Pro won't boot up. I get a grey screen with a series of flashing icons one at a time (apple logo, circle with line through it and a folder with a question mark).
The other problem is that my system disks are in my friend's house a thousand miles away so I can't boot up from my system disks. Can anyone offer any advice please? I'm desperate!

If you can start up in target disk mode, connect your computer that works to the one that doesn't. (I'm assuming you have another computer since you can't get to the Apple Discussion Forums with a computer that won't start up!)
Use the computer that doesn't work as an external drive to the one that does.
Go to this part of the Apple Downloads website and find the update you were installing. Download it as a standalone installer, and try to install onto the external HD. If it works, problem solved!
If it doesn't work, you'll need to follow Alexandre's advice and go to the Apple Store to get working installation discs. However, you can have access to your important files whenever you want them by simply using Target Disk Mode.
