Both DVD drives open in  bootcamp

I'm running bootcamp on a MacPro with dual DVD's. When I use the keyboard to open the top DVD drawer, BOTH of them open, first the top, then the bottom. That's going to make it inconvenient to use the DVD drives separately.
BTW, neither of them close with the keyboard.
Anyone else having this result, and is there a fix?

The easiest way to use thew optical drives in WIndows is to put a shortcut to each optical drive on your Windows desktop, then you can right click the shortcut icon and select Eject from the popup menu. Gives you individual control.
You still have to push the trays to get them to close.

  • Why are my DVD drives opening on boot up?

For several days now, whenever I start my Mac Pro, early in the boot process both of my DVD drives open their trays. After some period of time goes by after the boot process is complete, they'll both go retract, but something is causing this and if anyone has any ideas as to what that is, please let me know. I'm having a mouse problem and these both started at about the same time, but I'm unaware of what if anything I did to cause it...
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Rocky,
To be honest i have no idea what can cause that but here's what came to mind for me...
    1. Check with software update if your Mac Pro has the latest software and firmware.
    2. Go to system preferences > Startup Disk, select the correct startup disk by clicking it (just to make sure). The DVD drive could be opening 'asking' for a boot disc if it can not find the hard drive with a valid OS on it in the first few seconds. This is just a theory, not sure if it's accurate
    3. Go to Applications > Utilities and start Disk utility. Select your startup drive and click Repair Permissions. When done restart the Mac. Even if this doesn't fix the issue, it's good to run once in a while.

  • Dvd drive opens by it self

I bought a HP Pavilion HPE h8xt series it just came today. I set everything up and right when I turn it on, the dvd drive opens automatically.. Whenever i try to close it, it opens again. I have to force close it buy blocking it from opening again and pushing it back in. It stops opening by itself for a while, but after about 10 minutes, the opening process starts again. There is a orange disc icon flashing next to the blue wireless icon. Any ideas/help please?

    Hi itzraywhy
I don't know what's up with the dvd drive (and I would not be forcing it closed!), but that orange flashing light is showing hard drive read/write activity.  That's normal.
    Good luck.

On my HP dv7-7030us laptop, the DVD drive opens unexpectedly. This happens often and is very annoying. Does anyone have a solution? This has been a problem from the time that I first purchased the computer and I thought that it was just a setting that I would discover a fix for later.

  • My macbook pro dvd drive opens all disks as blank, can I fix it?

My macbook pro dvd drive opens all disks as blank. I have no access to a near by apple store as I live in remote NSW. I purchased the macbook when I lived in Sydney and the old owner had just had a fresh copy of the OS loaded. I've read a discussion of a similar nature and the only comment was take it back, that is easier said than done. Is there a fix I can do from home?

If you didn't buy this from the store, the first thing you need to do is boot from the install DVD, erase the disk drive (perhaps even zeroing it) and install a fresh copy of the OS. You do not want to inherit any changes the previous owner may have made to the system software (or worse).

I am talking about putting in any CD that is known to have content and it loads the CD and says its blank with nothing on it
    Who says?

  • Lost control of dvd drive / problem w bootcamp & windows xp

I have been running Windows XP in my bootcamp partition (and via Parallels) and now have this problem:
my machine does not see my dvd drive, although mechanically, it still works; on start up it spins up, it shifts back and forth, and makes all the normal noises. And, there is a Windows XP install disk still in there.
The Windows XP install disk is in there because I got the "windows32\hal.dll" corrupted error message on starting my Windows side, and I was attempting to repair it by re installing the dll file.
"About this Mac->Hardware->disc burning" shows "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly." I get a similar reading on the Windows side: my computer profile.
    I've tried the following:
--push the eject button (nothing happens)
--use disk utility to eject (doesn't see a cd drive)
--hold mousepad down while doing cold restart (does not currently work, but it worked last week when I was working on this problem).
--reset pmu by unplugging, removing battery, and holding power switch for 5 secs; then tried cold restart and mousepad. (nothing happens)
To Repeat: it is not a mechanical problem; the disk drive spins up on restart; the disk is not warped or damaged.
I would love to get this disk ejected, so that I then can reformat my drive and start over.
    Suggestions?

Open Terminal.app (in OSX), type this in, and press enter.
    $ drutil status
It should give the status, and more importantly the Name, mine is /dev/disk4
Now, type in the following and press enter:
    $ hdiutil eject -force /dev/DISKNAME
    So mine looked like this:
    $ hdiutil eject -force /dev/disk4
Let us know if that helps.

  • Both DVD Drives Not Installing Programs

    Hello,
Both of my DVD Drives have stopped installing programs. For example, once a DVD is placed in the Drive, it will initially load up and give me the oppurtunity to load the Setup Executable, start to load the program, but never finish.
This happens no matter what DVD/CD is loaded. Any ideas? I have removed them and let Windows redetect and reinstall them, but no help. Thanks!

    Hi,
I realise you have already tried part of the procedure below, but try starting from this.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.  Restart the PC.
Next, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drives are now working.
If the drives are not working, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Then open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drives in turn and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.
Reboot the PC and let Windows reinstall the devices.  Check the drives again.
If they still aren't working, run the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below again.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drives again and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the devices have uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drives and see if they now work.

  • CD/DVD drive opens on start and restart

This has been a problem ever since I installed 10.3.9 about a year ago.
Every single time I start up or restart the machine the CD drive pops open.
I'm running a 400 MHz PowerPC G4 (grey tower) and I've installed a LaCie CD/DVD drive. The drive was installed long before the upgrade to Panther and it was not a problem in OS 9 nor in 10.1.x.
Aside from being annoying, it means that I can't start from a CD, which I need to do to run things like Diskwarrior.
    400 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Are you using an Apple keyboard and mouse? I just did the firmware update on a 400MHz Sawtooth G4, and the problem you describe started happening to me. I was/am using a non-Apple keyboard and a PS2-USB converter to plug it into the Mac. I just did the 4.2.8 firmware upgrade, and now the drive tray opens on boot/startup. It didn't do that before the firmware upgrade! I hate it when updates/upgrades create more problems than they solve. Anyway, I borrowed a friend's Apple pro keyboard and mouse, and with those plugged in, everything is normal. So if you aren't using an Apple keyboard, you might try plugging one in to see if that fixes the problem.

  • Wrong DVD drive opens on 2009 Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a 2009 Mac Pro with two DVD drives.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, I've noticed some unusual behavior:
    1.  Ocassionally, the incorrect DVD drive ejects/opens. For example, when I attempt to open the top drive, the bottom one opens, and vice-versa.
    2.  Ocassionally, when I simultaneously burn 2 DVDs of the same items, I find that one of the DVD drives burns all of the items without problems, while the other one only burns a small number of the items.
    3.  After inserting a blank DVD, and selecting the "Burn (item name) to disc" from the right-click menu, a long time passes before the "Are you sure you want to burn..." dialogue box appears.
Has anyone else experienced this constellation of symptoms?  Are they connected?  And what sorts of remedies have worked?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi-
A PRAM reset should clear that up.
Did it for me in the past.

  • CD/DVD drive open on its own - Equium L40

    Hi,
I have a Equium L40-10X laptop bought recently from Pc World. It's been working fine until recently my cd/dvd drive popped open on its own. I closed it and then about 10 minutes later it did it again. This happens every so often. After a bit of research I found out it could have been a spyware issue. Scanned, and removed all traces etc. Problem appeared to be gone, but alas, the drive once again popped open.
Recently the drive is not reading discs as well. It seems to work when it wants for any time between 10 seconds and an hour at a time. The things got a mind of its own....and when it's not working, the button to open the drive doesn??t seem to work. I have to use a paperclip to open the drive.
Either I have a haunted laptop or there's something wrong.
Has anyone had any experience of anything like this before or have any advice on what to do?
    Thanks, Jon.

    Hi mate
I didnt notice something like this before but I presume its a mechanical problem.
Dont think 3rd party software (program, spyware, virus, etc) could cause this issue.
Additionally you have said that the drive is not reading discs as well.
In such case I would recommend contacting the ASP in your country and to ask for the drive check and if necessary for an ODD drive replacement.
If the warranty is valid the replacement should be done for free.
    Best regards

  • DVD Drive Opens by itself

For the past couple months my DVD drive keeps opening by itself after booting up and random times. I tried the BIOS update (tried F29, F24. F22) that I saw in  few forums but it keeps happening. Model is dv6t-7000.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi Acottin,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 Notebook and  DVD drive keeps opening by itself.  Here are some steps to check on the DVD player.
    1. Make sure that when you open the DVD door that there is not something stopping it from closing all the way
(a CD/DVD cleaning kit available at electronics stores).
    2. Make sure all updates have been done on the HP Pavilion Notebook.
    3. There is a firmware update that might help.
    I hope this is helpful.
    Thanks.

  • Use a windows dvd drive to install bootcamp windows

    Hi!
I know it is possible, I looked up google about it but it's pretty difficult to find...
My macbook's dvd drive is broken and I don't have enough money to buy another one nor another external dvd drive. So I would like to use my girlfriend's laptop dvd drive to boot up windows install on my macbook.
How do you think I could do it???
    Thanks a lot!

    Tom:
Unfortunately it is impossible with the current procedure of boot camp installation of Windows. This is because the drivers for the ports (USB/Firewire) are not installed until Windows is completely installed first on an intel Mac.
Now, if you are planning on installing windows as virtual machine via Parallels or VMWare Fusion then there may be a way to do so by using the windows pc over the network by OSx.
